THE SOUND OF MUSIC...

Of all the things that happened on the night that Titanic sank, nothing is quite as emotionally resonant as the saga of the ship's musicians, playing as she slipped under the waves.

In the wake of the sinking, a myth surfaced that the band played a hymn called 'Nearer My God To Thee' at the very last.

The story immediately did the rounds like wildfire. And it became such a powerful image, such an emotionally charged vignette, that it's actual credibility had been widely accepted. Even James Cameron deferred to it in his epic blockbuster film of 1997.

But did they actually play it at all? Not very likely, as it turns out. Not likely at all.

How do we know? Junior wireless operator Harold Bride emerged from the wireless room on Titanic in the last, fateful minutes. The band was very close by, playing what would be their final number. A trained observer with a meticulous attention to detail, Bride noted that they were actually playing a tune called 'Song d' Autommne', also known as 'Autumn'.

Bride knew the song well. It was a popular tune in Britain, and much played in the cafes and skating rinks back home.

But that version of 'Autumn' was not well known in America at all. It had never really crossed the Atlantic. The journalists that Bride subsequently related his story to in America took the already established hymn saga, and then attributed it as a popular American hymn, which was also, co-incidentally known as 'Autumn'...

One or two survivors in nearby boats claim to have heard the 'first faint strains' of 'Nearer My God To Thee' in the last minutes. That said, the intro to 'Song d' Autommne' is very similar indeed to the much hyped hymn

Still, 'Nearer My God To Thee' remains the people's popular choice of tune. But it is highly unlikely to be the actual, literal truth...

#nearermygodtothee This song makes me feel: an ache This melody haunts me. It’s somehow so sad and stirring and beautiful at the same time. Written in 1841 by Sarah Flower Adams and put to music by her sister. I didn’t know until I went searching for all the lyrics that it recounts the story of Jacob’s dream! Trivia: supposedly it was the last song played by the orchestra as the famous Titanic sank. A VERY beautiful instrumental version was included on the Titanic soundtrack that I recommend.
