he's actually pretty lonely, but he'd never admit to it, not even if you held him at gunpoint!

neku and you figure it out at some point and never bring it up, but you try to make joshua feel more comfortable around you two

it's very easy to fluster joshua with genuine kindness. so if you sneak up behind him, hug him and tell him ‘we really love you and care about you a lot’ he'll be a mess!

he'll always laugh it off, but you can tell how flustered he truly is…

before dating you two, joshua thought it would be impossible to ‘get’ people. and neku was honestly the same in the regard

but now that the three of you are dating, the two boys realize that they were wrong. it takes a lot of time to truly understand someone, but it is so worth it!

Ohmigosh, writing this has made me realise how much I miss NEO:TWEWY. I still haven't completed it - I'm right at the end - but I might pick it up again after this. Also, I haven't played Danganronpa in a very long time so I apologise if I remembered Chiaki's personality incorrectly! Also, if you're a DR fan, is the new game any good? I might get it if it is... Neku

Honestly? I think Neku would really get along with someone who is just as relaxed and introverted as him. It’s not the kind of relationship where you two are both too quiet because you both enjoy the comfortable silence that comes with being together.

You both have strangely similar yet different interests that often require a lot of focus and quiet to enjoy: Neku with his music and artistry, and you with playing games. Your hobbies are both something you can do side-by-side while maintaining quiet chatter or complete silence.

This quietness or common interests are probably how you two met as well. Maybe it was a convention or a school project and, because you were the quiet two, you were paired together.

Since then, you two find a couple of hours a week to hang out in each other’s home partaking in your hobbies!

I think a big part of your bond is buying each other trinkets. You might have a backpack filled with pins or a jacket with patches or a phone with charms on and a lot of these might be what Neku has bought you as a gift. In return, I think he’d appreciate it if you buy him albums or posters or pieces of artwork in return.

You two are also pretty well-known amongst your friends for your bluntness as well. They love it, actually, it’s pretty funny to watch. Maybe Neku will comment something, you’ll add on something just as blunt but the both of you are just staring down at a device, completely unbothered. You’re silent weapons.

As far as the Reaper’s Game goes, if you were involved, Neku knew you were capable of fighting for yourself even if you weren’t partners. So, while he made sure to team up with you wherever possible, he wasn’t overly protective of you because he knows how independent you are.

Joshua

It’s safe to say that, in this sort of partnership, Joshua does most of the talking for the both of you. While you bring your characteristic bluntness to the relationship, Joshua knows how to sweeten his words a bit and tell little, subtle lies.

You spend a lot of your time keeping Joshua’s manipulative and teasing attitude in check, though. You’re not afraid to tell him off when he gets a bit too eager messing with naive people. He might pout a little, but he’s definitely not the type to take it to heart.

Whenever you play games around him, Joshua’s full of questions. Soon enough, he’ll learn how to kill bosses himself without ever having picked up a controller so expect him to be back-seat gaming. But, all in all, he just enjoys watching you play games since you’re so passionate about them.

 I imagine when you take long pauses in conversation to think of what to say, Joshua just sits there smiling like an idiot in awe. And, if anyone tries to interrupt your train of thought, he has this evil glare that he shoots them.

If you sometimes struggle to understand things that others might regard as common knowledge, Joshua takes the time to explain it for you, though he can be a little teasing about it.

Also, your bizarre sense of humour might fall flat with other people, but Joshua is exactly the same and adores it. It leads to you two creating a bunch of inside jokes that no one else really gets.

Rindo

My first thought when it comes to Rindo with a friend/partner who likes gaming is arcade hang outs. He loves his city and wants to explore it with the people close to him so of course he’ll take you out somewhere fun.

I think Rindo would also enjoy watching you play games, usually purely for the art style. If you put in extra effort to unlock concept art in the games you play for him, I think he’d appreciate that as well. 

If any of the games you play have any kind of moral or greater purpose, Rindo would really enjoy learning about that too, especially with his interests in motivational speakers and influencers.

Rindo takes real joy in watching interactions between you and Fret. Neither of you have very much common sense so getting into bizarre situations is really amusing to watch, and your honest bluntness massively throws Fret off. Of course, you and Nagi are also very similar so baffling Rindo and Fret with your game-centric conversations is also a big part of why Rindo loves watching you talk to others.

Most people know you both from how much you distract one another. You’re both avid FanGO players and you spend any time you have apart texting each other. You’ve developed a rather…unique texting style that makes it so other people can’t tell what you’re saying to one another. It’s a fun little code.

If you have any kind of interest in fashion, I think Rindo would enjoy going to big mall stores with you and helping you find your style. He’ll want to find out which brand of clothing you prefer, maybe you could even get matching phone charms or phone cases.

In The Moment - Neku Sakuraba x Reader

Not gonna lie, this one was hard. Between hectic life, writer’s block, and abandoning my first idea, I really struggled coming up with something good and I’m still not 100% on this one but it is long overdue. Thank you, anon, for patiently waiting for me and thank you for bringing me back to a fandom/game that I truly love.

              Today is proving to be simply perfect. After mulling over ideas for weeks, going through all the necessary channels, and hours of tedious prep, I’m going to start my final art project today.

              Stepping back, I take one last look at the two-story building that will serve as my canvas. With my paint all prepped, the rarely-used road blocked off, my favorite music blasting in my ears, and perfect weather, I begin hurling balloons at the blank wall. It takes only a few balloons before I’m entirely engrossed in my own little world of music and art. The stone wall is already livelier with a handful of pink, blue, green, and yellow splats.

              In my own little paradise, I bounce towards my bucket of ammo. Another balloon rolls in my hand while my groove has consumed me. I turn back to my canvas, launching the paint.

              My heart stops. The balloon soars through the air in what feels like painful slow motion, inching ever closer towards its unsuspecting victim. It’s like a horror scene watching the projectile make contact with his face, molding against it before the rubber skin breaks. A wave of pink paint bursts forward, crashing down on the poor boy before the actual impact takes him to the ground.

              Hand to my mouth, I gape at the casualty before my senses snap back to me. Ripping my headphones out and snatching up a towel, I rush towards him.

              “Oh my god, I’m so sorry! Are you okay?!”

              Sitting up, he pulls down his headphones and rubs the paint from his eye. “What the hell?” He looks down at the smear across his hand. “What happened?”

              I push the towel into his hand. “You kinda got caught in the crossfire.”

              His orange brows scrunch together. “Crossfire?”

              “Yeah. I’m working on an art project and you walked right in the middle of it.” My hand waves to the dripping wall.

              More in awe than anger—which I found surprising—he stands up to look at my work. “An art project? Isn’t it illegal to tag buildings like this?”

              “One, it’s not a tag, it’s a project. Two, this building is scheduled for demolition, so I got permission from the city; that’s why I blocked the road off. Didn’t you notice?”

              We look back at the “road closed” signs.

              “Oh…No...” he mutters.

              “Hmm, maybe I should’ve put some on the sidewalks.”

              My gaze turns back on my victim. Beneath the neon color sprayed across the side of his head is a wild flay of orange hair and fair skin. His cloudy-sky eyes are outstanding, somehow lending themselves to the bright interest despite how soothingly cool they appear. I’d be clearly amiss if I didn’t admit that he’s cute.

              “Sorry for getting in the way.”

              He’s looking at me, and by the time I realize it, I feel my skin alight at the thought he caught me staring into his eyes.

              “I’m sorry you’re…pink,” I reply. “I might be able to save your headphones but I don’t think your shirt’s gonna make it.”

              He tugs at his shirt, a corner of his lips pulling back in disappointment. “At least it wasn’t my favorite, I guess.”

              There’s something strange about this guy, like he doesn’t quite know how normal people react; most people would be upset after being covered in paint and having their clothes ruined, regardless of whether or not it was their fault. However, next to this unusual naivety is the light of someone completely open, someone out to actually see the world for what it is. This is someone I want to understand, to aspire to be like.

              The words leave my mouth before I can even think about them.

              “Do you wanna join me?” I’m an idiot.

              “Huh?”

              The idiocy continues when I jam a thumb towards my buckets of supplies. “You’re already covered in paint. Why don’t you join me? It’ll be fun.” I pull this innocent kid towards the paint station, reaching into the bucket to plop an orb into his hand. “Here.”

              He glances between me, the balloon, and the wall. “Are you sure? I might ruin your project.”

              I grin. “You can’t ruin arbitration that easily. Besides, the whole point of this part is to just make a mess. So go on, throw it.”

              He shrugs and tosses the balloon against the stone where it breaks.

              “There you go!” I pick up another balloon, flinging it across the road.

              School projects aren’t traditionally fun, but I was having a blast with this school project from the start; with the guy—who introduced himself as Neku—helping me out, this might be the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. He genuinely puts his heart into simply throwing balloons, like a bubbling stream of inspiration, spurring my inspiration and turning this project on its head.

              My hand meets the bottom of the bucket—an empty bucket. “Damn. All out of balloons.”

              Neku looks up at the dripping wall. “Yeah, but I’m pretty sure there’s at least three layers of paint here. Might’ve been overkill.”

              “I had to make sure there was enough to cover every brick. Better too much than not enough in this case,” I say, starting to pick up scraps of scattered rubber.

              He helps me collect the garbage. “So is this all there is to this project? Hurl paint at walls?”

              “No, this is the background set up. Later, I’m gonna get some spray paint and do the more tedious work later.”

              “What was even the point of this project?”

              “Well, it’s an art project so…a good grade, first off. Second…” I pause to really think about how to word it. “I guess I really wanted to capture the spontaneity of life. That every moment can be a bright and colorful splat.” Neku chuckles, bringing out a more bashful side. “I guess that makes it pretty obvious who my role model is, huh? But I try to remind myself every day: Enjoy every moment-”

              “-with all you’ve got.” Neku finishes my sentence with an all-knowing grin.

              Even if the embarrassment burns between my shoulders, I can’t help laughing. “Is it too obvious where my inspiration came from?”

              “If it’s any consolation, I’m sure CAT would approve of your methods.”

              “That actually makes me really happy.” I look back at the mess I hope to turn into something incredible. “CAT’s art that got me through some tough times; I’d love to be able to inspire people someday the same way CAT’s art inspired me.”

              My brain short circuits. For a split-second while, I attempt to process what just happened, all I can feel is buzzing just beneath the skin. A hand reaches up to brush the spot he’d grazed but the fingers come away with pink paint. Neku, on the other hand, stands there, avoiding eye contact, a different shade of pink peeking out from beneath the paint across his face.

              “What-…” I can’t even come up with the words to finish my question.

              His face still blushing, he gives me a warm smile. “Just living in the moment.”

              The buzz surges into my chest, crashing against my heart with a wave of happiness. Building up my courage, I follow his lead.

              “Would your moment object if we maybe extended it by a couple hours?” A brow arches in question. “Tomorrow, six o’clock? Maybe with less paint?”

              When he understands, he shrugs. “Less, more, I’m sure it’ll be fun either way.”

              “Great.” Lifting my phone, I snap a picture of the paint-riddled kid.

              “What was that for?”

              “Your picture for my contacts,” I reply. “I assume you’ll be giving me your number, right?”

              He smirks. “Nah, I’ll just walk down the street and wait to get pelted with more paint balloons.”

              “So you’re gonna ignore more traffic signs?”

              The simper is marred with a laugh. “Worked the first time.”

              I shove my phone into his hands. “Don’t push your luck, buddy. You already got the date.”

              We swap numbers and clean up the rest of the remnants scattered about. I’m sure he can tell how reluctant I am to say goodbye, but we inevitably do and part ways. Once I’m sure he’s around the corner and out of sight, I literally jump for joy like a child on Christmas.

              My entire plan for the afternoon was to work on my project—taking into account both prep and clean up. I had absolutely nothing else in the books for today. Never in a million years would I have guessed that, in the midst of my work, an artsy accident would end up with a spontaneous date. I know my adopted motto says to enjoy the present, but tomorrow just cannot come fast enough.

I stood next to Donald, Goofy and king Mickey. Master is speaking to both Sora and Riku about them becoming a keyblade master like me. "Miss Y/n will guide you in your journey. Only call if needed of help." Master informs them. "Because she is too a keyblade master."

"We won't need her help! We got this!" Sora states confidently.

"Just like Master Yen Sid already told you, this is going to be a difficult challenge." I stated with a raised eye brow at Sora.

"We got this!" He confidently says once again. My eyes roll, looking at my wrist at a band I have on it.

"You will see him again young y/n." Yen Sid tells me with a nod. I only nodded before walking out the door with Sora.

My eyes open to see Sora's face. He moves his head away so I can sit up. "I'm glad you're awake y/n!" He shouts happily. I gave a weak smile. My eyes move to a figure to the right of me. I let out a 'huh'? "There was another person here but I didn't get his name."

"Let's go then. Does he need help?" I asked him as I stood up.

"He's looking for his friends." He tells me. I only nodded before he spoke again, "Let's go and find Riku." I nod before following him around corners until we saw some strange looking heartless.

"These are the unversed!" Sora shouts, summoning his keyblade. I remember what master told me, I quickly summon my keyblade and got ready to fight them.

"You again?" A familiar voice asks after we finished the rest of the unversed. I turn to see orange hair and blue eyes that I fell for. Sora opens his mouth to introduce us but he cut him off. "Y/n." He says in disbelieve.

"You know her?" Sora asks.

I ignore him, "Neku." I hug the guy tightly. "It's been so long."

"I know, I tried to find her help but I can't find the others either." He tells me, a couch catches our attention.

"So you two know each other?" Soda asks as he places his hands behind his head.

"Yeah you can say that." I answered him. I grab onto Neku's hand. "We're dating."

The keyblade wielder fell on his butt at the news, "I hope you remember what Master told me or you were just zoning out?" I ask him.

"Uh..."

"Master told me that when I go on the trip with you guys to make sure you are going to be keyblade masters, I could find him." I reminded the dumb dumb. He chuckles before standing up.

After finding our friends, Neku turns to me. "I missed you so much." I gave a smile, "I can't wait til we get to hang out again."

"Same here. I'll be back as fast as you can sing my favorite song." He smiles back before kissing my cheek and disappearing with the our friends.

After a long battle, I finally got back to Master Yen Sid's tower. I walk in to see Sora and Riku getting evacuated. I hear that Riku is a Keybalde master but Sora isn't.

"Y/n." Masters voice spoke, everyone's eyes are on me.

"Congratulations Riku, welcome to the keyblade masters club." I joke with him, in which he chuckles.

"For your help, I have granted you to see Neku." Master tells me, I feel my heart do thousands of cartwheels and jumping jacks. He waves his hand to reveal a portal "see you soon y/n." I smile and gave a nod before walking in.

The first thing I see when I walk through is a big poster:

shiki and you are much closer at first, as neku just has a hard time opening up and isn't super social when you first start dating

he has grown a lot already, but he knows that he still has to improve, so that eventually there's no trace of the antisocial asshole left that you and shiki first met

even though the two of you liked him back then, he's determined to be a better person for the two of you! but that sometimes leads him to isolate himself

neku struggles to show how much he cares about you and shiki, while he's also the one most passionate about the relationship and an absolute simp for you two!

both neku and shiki are incredibly touch starved, but neku even more than shiki

those two felt so lonely and isolated for such a long time, that they're desperately longing to touch you, while also being too shy to initiate intimacy

both of them also need a lot of reassurance and reminders that they are loved the way they are!

shiki struggles the most with confidence, regarding her looks and her talents, while neku often wonders if he's even a good person…

whenever the three of you go on dates, you meet up at hachiko! it's your little spot and it holds so many memories, that even if it'd be quicker to meet somewhere else, you will always meet at hachiko's statue!

due to dating shiki, you and neku quickly become close friends with eri too!

shiki never shuts up about you and neku, leading to eri knowing all the details of your relationship and becoming your biggest supporter!

shiki not only makes the three of you really cool throuple costumes when halloween comes around, but she also makes regular clothes for neku and you!

and while she always refuses to let you pay for them, as she sees them as gifts, neku and you always sneak some money into her wallet when shiki isn't looking…

Um! I did decide to do this, but only somewhat. Like I've said, I'm not a massive fan of the yandere trope, but I know a lot of people are so I tried to write from a more protective/possessive aspect rather than strictly yandere. I hope this is alright for you! I just can't.

Protective!Neku HCs (Romantic)

I definitely do see Neku as the protective type, but not outwardly or vocally so. He’s…still not used to the whole “having a partner” thing after years of choosing to isolate himself from society and relying on music and art for happiness.

So, he finally finds someone he loves dearly! The first person…ever, really. Sure, Shiki, Beat, and Rhyme are his close friends but this is the first time he’s felt something for someone romantically. He will absolutely not be giving them up so easily to others.

Neku is completely fine with his partner talking to the aforementioned trio - they’ve been through so much together and Neku trusts them with his life…which is pretty much his partner, anyway. He might demand a bit more of their attention during these conversations in subtle ways like always having a bud earphone in their ear so they’re at least partially listening to something to do with him or having them hold his hand; it’s really very simple things with Neku’s friends and they've learnt not to comment on how “cute” it is because Neku’s death glare is not a friendly sight - Shiki still has chills.

Around strangers, though, Neku has an entirely different attitude. He might be initially calm, but he makes it very clear very quickly that this lovely person is, in fact, his partner. There’ll be no advancements made towards his partner because that death glare of Neku’s returns tenfold if this stranger even dares touch his partner. 

Be it an arm around their waist or his hand in theirs, Neku wants to make it incredibly obvious that he’ll bite their hand off if they make any kind of move towards his partner.
