Meet the Mischievous Kou

Kou paces around with her pink cat, Rosalie, in the front garden of her palace. She keeps looking at her holo-watch and then to the gateway entrance. Kou suddenly spots her sister, Rini, coming back home from a mission and races to the front entrance as to be the first one in.

“Rini? Is that you?” Neo Queen Serenity calls out, expecting to hear her first born’s voice.

“Nope, sorry to disappoint mother! Just me; your least favorite daughter!” Bellowed Kou.

The queen enters the main hallway. “Come on Kou… we’ve been through this before. Rini is not my favorite daughter.”

Just like clockwork, Rini enters through the doorway just in time to hear her mother’s words out of context. *GASP!* Rini shields her heart with her left hand and holds a shocked expression on her face.

“Well if that’s how you really feel!” Rini shouts as she storms off towards her room.

“NO! WAIT!!! Rini!” The queen yells as she makes an attempt to chase after her eldest daughter. Kou sneers to herself causing her mother to whip back her head abruptly.

“WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?!” Screeched her mother.

Kou rolls her eyes and shrugs. The younger princess then walks back outside with her cat as the queen holds a bemused look on her face before continuing to chase after Rini.

“Your timing was impeccable!” Rosalie uttered excitedly.

“Ya…well it has to be, doesn’t it? I mean for tomorrow’s plan to go smoothly that is. We gotta be faster than time itself. It’s not everyday one could anticipate a future invasion into the past which could disrupt the present.”

“It sounds crazy when you say it like that.” 😸

“I know it does.” 👸🏻

Bad news: I'm sick. Good news: that gave me free time to work on Raspberry and Mercurial Knight's appearances.

Raspberry Cookie -

Raspberry Cookie’s Soul Jam is a half crimson, half-dark blue flower-looking symbol, a reference to how flowers can represent a lot of things and how Raspberry, back in the Hollyberry Kingdom, used to manage quite a few jobs and responsibilities. Her Soul Jam is the Light of Loyalty.

She has crimson hair with light pink swirls in it. Her hair used to be long, but paralleling what one of her fellow Neo-Ancients did when he ran away from his kingdom, she cut hers shorter too. It’s about shoulder length now. Due to this, instead of tying her hair, she leaves it untouched since it’s a bit too short to style in that way.

Raspberry wears a short, dark-red jacket with a hood. More often than not, her hood is up. She still wears her tailcoat but no longer sports her cravat or her epaulettes. 

Raspberry Cookie also doesn’t wear her gloves anymore; as mentioned in another post, she gave them to Kouign-Amann Cookie (her gloves are light pink in this AU, unlike how they’re white in the canon storyline. It's a bit of a useless change, but it doesn’t do anything negative).

A pastel blue ribbon can be seen tied around the former princess’ waist (and yes, she is Royal Berry’s younger sister in this AU and has Jungleberry as a sister-in-law. The age gap is huge, however). She wears white pants and short, brown, diamond-shaped boots.

As for jewelry, she doesn’t have any besides her two necklaces. 

Her Soul Jam is embedded into one of her necklaces as a charm.

Mercurial Knight Cookie -

Mercurial Knight Cookie’s Soul Jam is a half aquamarine and half cream camellia sinensis leaf. The representation of that shape will be revealed later on in the fic. His Soul Jam is the Light of Detachment.

The top part of his hair is white, and the lower part is black. Unlike his fellow Neo-Ancients (other than Stormbringer, maybe), he didn’t alter his hair or tie it up into any hairstyle that’s different from how his hair is styled or seen on your average day. 

Mercurial Knight wears a gray fur cloak (without the hood), abandoning his shoulder blades. He still wears the armor that he wore at the Faerie Kingdom, but he’s been thinking of changing it for a while now. Mercurial is unsure of such a choice, however. It would be more of an emotional decision if he kept it, but he’s the holder of the Light of Detachment, so that’d be slightly hypocritical of him, wouldn’t it?

Unlike before, his wings are folded underneath his fur cloak most of the time. There’s two hidden openings in the cloak that can be zipped open and closed for his wings whenever he doesn’t want them folded, however.

He also wears a gray waist cape, which reaches to about his ankles. His gray boots reach up to his knees, but he may also change the boots in time since they’re part of his Faerie Kingdom attire.

This is also the time when I’ll be mentioning that all of the Neo-Ancients wear a necklace with a light blue crystal charm. Consider it their ‘friendship’ necklace (it may hold more of a purpose).

His Soul Jam is the clasp of his fur cloak.

I'm doing my best to change Raspberry's backstory in a way that fits into the story. And also, I'd like you guys to note that Stormbringer was brought up differently in this AU and has a different status from the canon storyline, so quite a few aspects of her personality and goals will and may differ.

sad to say but sometimes i am a hater (and in this post the thing i am a hater of is specifically the neo diamond cutters in da idw comic of sonic)

now i dont MIND them as a team and i was hyped at first! but thats kinda. decayed. under the readmore are my thoughts on them (long & rambly)

theres a few reasons to it: the visual designs next to each other, the team dynamics, the way tangle is treated in those dynamics, the reason the team even formed, the way they had tangle take the diamond cutters name so insensitively… i really *don’t* like them as they are that much, although i still dont ‘hate’ the team as a concept

visual designs: their color schemes overlap so much and not necessarily in a good way. every color used on one is used on the others in some form, which kinda blends them together instead of building separate identity. looking at other 3-man sonic teams highlights this: not just sonic tails knuckles being distinct primary colors, but even team dark that overlaps in black and reds is still distinct thru shadow and omega’s body shapes, rouge having pink instead of red, AND having different concentrations of each color. the neo diamond cutters/NDC have two majority white characters, both of whom wear yellows and browns and warm tones, and then one character who is yellow and brown and warm and wears cold gray tones. their shapes do stand out with tangle’s stripes and tail, lanolin’s puffs, and whisper’s angles, but still all the white is super same-y (and it gets worse when silver teams up with them). and the character designs aren’t bad on their own - but they’d work so much better together to be tweaked imo, maybe by working more purple into tangle’s design with her eyes (which is a color neither of the others use), and finding a way to give whisper a bit more of a peppy outfit (her extreme gear fit works SO well for this, the blue is cute on her and works great with the gold in a different way than it works with tangle’s white and purple with gold), and then lanolin can kinda stay the dusty down-to-earth tones, maybe work in green somewhere..

then my next point….. why does tangle stay with them i know the reason they gave her is she wants to stick close to whisper, but why is she back in a team with authority over her and responsibility and specific missions? isn’t that why she left the restoration - besides to be free to go find whisper, to be able to go where she wants and be helpful where she feels she’s needed? i can’t see tangle being content with this setup for very long, especially as it is where lanolin is clearly like their commander/boss. seeing that scene with lanolin slapping the paddleball out of tangle’s hand instead of asking her to stop - based on what they show in the comic, lanolin went right to smacking around instead of communicating, and based on what tangle says, didn’t even communicate to tangle that she wanted her to stop. tangle, who HAS been shown to be fairly good at self-correcting and staying within boundaries with whisper. it’s sure not the only part of their dynamic but the fact it was there is, man,, additionally tangle herself is getting slandered this arc, particularly by recharacterizing her as a rookie who hadn’t done any fighting until sonic showed up - issue 4, tangle’s introduction, explicitly contradicts this by showing tangle already easily handling badniks before sonic and her even first see one another!!!

for the purpose of this NDC team layout where lanolin and whisper are Good At Things and tangle is the rookie who needs their training and doesn’t even know how to fight, they’re scratching out the parts of tangle that made her so cool and fun! and it’s so frustrating seeing the character i like being written so wrong, i want to make a separate analysis post just for how recent issues contradict or build friction with recent tangle vs how she was in earlier issues.

additionally, if whisper’s trying to move on from her past and the diamond cutters, the better way to show that narratively isn’t by forcing whisper into another team, it’s letting her function outside a team, with her friends - the way tangle does. so instead pushing tangle into whisper’s box having a team, it grates all that down into ‘but what if they were secret agents sorta’. (oh, and all had wisps except tangle. is she allergic to wisps or something, or are they trying not to give tangle anything else special because she has her tail, despite whisper having *5* wisps not being too many?)

i guess i dont really have a conclusion besides ‘i hope tangle realizes she isnt having a good time here and that adhering to the standards other people hold for her instead of playing to her own strengths is holding her back and goes and spends time with literally anyone besides whisper and lanolin’, but i really wish this team hadn’t started at all, or at least ended up as a one-off instead of a recurring unit that isolates each member from anyone else in the comic unless they join the team. it pulls tangle and whisper away from potentially more interesting situations and interactions with other characters and pushes them into a structure, even ignoring what the writers had to break (ie tangle) in order to force them into that structure. and tangle clearly came out the worst among the three of them, but i think they all kinda hurt for it.

and hey, if you disagree- well first, why did you read all this if you knew i was just gonna be hating on the thing you like?- you’re free to share your standpoints! i’m not committed to thinking of NDC as Bad and Awful, but the things done with them have made the comic less enjoyable to me, so i’m not inclined to like the team very much. and i don’t dislike the characters themselves, just this specific way they’re stuck together. even lanolin, my least favorite, still has good points but is kinda kept in her ‘unlikable’ state by being stressed and put supervising the other two when she doesnt like it.

People tend to either think pearl's fam is chill af or terrible and i prefer the first option LOL, it's nice as an AU for plot angst and stuff but I think pearl is on good terms with her parents!! she's definitely a daddy's girl

When she told her mom she was dating marina her mom was like "Great, when will I meet her? Are you bringing her to family dinner on Sunday? How much food should I expect her to eat?"

Her dad was like "Cool." Which is actually dad speak for "I'm so proud of you and I can't wait to meet the love of your life."

The Houzuki family is rich as fuck so they will absolutely pay for all the expenses of their wedding and honeymoon, so they can literally do whatever they want. following this idea, here are some pearlina wedding hcs:

They have all their friends and family come of course, oth is popular so they invite all sorts of people they've become acquainted doing business with

Pearl's maid of honor is Callie, Marina's is Marie ofc

They both have some of the agents as their brides maids, agent 3 is one of Pearl's, agent 8 is one of Marina's, 4 and neo 3 are there too but not in the bridal parties (they haven't really met much yet so they are both invited bc NSS members but neither of them are close)

Pearl has a suit dress combination, a short, fluffy white wedding skirt with a pristine white blazer with teal accents. she has a teal tie on as well

Marina has a form fitting, shimmery, white dress that reaches the ground and has a high slit by her leg for mobility. It has really delicate, thin straps made of lace or beads, they're really just there for show instead of support but the beads have hints of pink in them

They have the most mushy and from the heart vows ever, Marina saying that Pearl saved her, gave her hope that inkopolis would be a home for her and she fell in love with the kindest most beautiful person ever. Pearl saying how Marina changed her, how she made her evaluate her actions and life choices and became such a better person because of her influence, and there was nobody she’d rather spend the rest of her life with than Marina. 

They have the most gorgeous wedding ring sets, Marina has a round blue sapphire with diamonds around the band of the ring, and a wedding band that fits over the ring to make it look like an infinity symbol. Pearl has a square (but its tilted on its side so its a diamond shape) pink diamond surrounded by smaller white diamonds, and a wedding band that points in the middle making the set look like a crown <3 

Pearl’s dad absolutely cries during their first dance, hes so proud of his daughter and he also gives Marina a dance because she doesn’t have family that she can do that with ;-; that makes Marina cry 

Pearl and Marina’s first dance is so emotional and they have a beautiful dance routine they practiced, a simple ballroom dance with lots of twirling and Marina dipping Pearl and kissing her. Everyone is just so happy for them and the two of them are so excited to spend the rest of their lives together

Their honeymoon is in like a tropical forest/island environment, somewhere they’re kind of secluded in a beautiful nature setting and can chill and relax as wives without worrying about being off the hook
