I've been talking with xem for a while.

The way xe looks at me, I just get so nervous looking into xer eyes, I swear I could just float away. The one of my dreams, I never thought I could find happiness but with xem, it seems possible. I feel like I'm xer world and xe is mine.

Fae/Faer

It was difficult building the town up again without faer, I might think about faer a bit too often. Seemingly, fae manage to take up all my thoughts. When I walk into the now rebuilt kitchen, I recall faer adjusting the table, sweeping, scrubbing down the counters, it's odd, it feels as if fae are still here. It feels as if fae're just waiting for me to say the right thing into the nothingness it is that fae left.

The tendency ne had to walk away mid conversation while ve was talking with me, was somewhat irritating. Often I found ne'd just go up into what ve had told me was nir tree. It was on my land and somehow ve'd managed to call it vis. When not in the tree, I'd find nem in the back garden, playing with the dog, which ve also claimed to be vis. Ne allows the dog to lick ver, which I find repulsive, I don't recall why I bought the dog in the first place, not much of a fan for animal, but it was likely for ver.

Ze/Mer

I have no idea how ze does it, wake up every day at 4 am, I mean I love mer, but ze's out of mer mind. Don't let me forget, but ze cooks too, right before work, ze's an absolute life saver.

These short bits aren't meant to be reinventive or anything. I myself would just like to see neopronouns used more often, because that's what makes them easier to adapt to. Feel free to read over one of these to help yourself get used to them.

Pink - Mew/Mews/Mewself

I was able to make it to Pink’s house earlier today. When I got there, I saw that mew was attempting to clean up mews mess.

Mew had spilled an entire bag of jellybeans all over the floor, I could see that Pink looked embarrassed when mew looked up to see me opening the door. It’s cool, I’ve always known mew to be quite clumsy. I held Pink clean up the rest of mews mess, and then we sat down to talk,

Pink actually seemed really happy to see me, I didn’t expect that of mew. We didn’t always have the best relationship, but I’m glad things are changing. Before I left, Pink made me something to eat, it was delicious, mew was nowhere near this good a cook in highschool.

Know Your Neopronouns

If you look around online, you can find lists of neopronouns. (Neopronouns are words that get can be used instead of 'he' or 'she' when refering to someone.) Most show just the first 2 terms (‘Ey/Em,’ or ‘Ze/Zim’). Few provide any info about how to pronounce them. And even less provide examples of how messy real usage is. This guide is an attempt to show how real people are using neopronouns. It’s based off the data of the 2020-2023 (Nonbinary) Gender Censuses.

English Pronoun Sets include:

Subject (the person acting) – ie. They

Object (the person the action is happening to) – ie. Them

Dependent Possessive (ownership, thing owned is named) - ie. Their

Independent Possessive (ownership, thing owned is not named) – ie. Theirs

Reflexive (action affecting the person who is acting) – ie. Themself

In a sentence:

Neopronouns come in 3 flavours:

The first type is based off the most common English personal pronouns:

‘They/Them/Their/Theirs/Themself (or Themselves)’

‘He/Him/His/His/Himself’

‘She/Her/Her/Hers/Herself’

This type of neopronoun usually mimics the ending sounds of one or more of the common pronoun sets. For example, ‘Ze/Zem’ pronouns are based on ‘he’ and ‘them.’

The second type includes pronouns not usually used as personal pronouns (like indefinite ('One'), neuter ('It'), or definite (‘that’)). It also includes neopronouns derived from them ('Thon').

The third type is based on various nouns not usually considered related to gender at all ('Star' or 'Pup'). These are called ‘nounself pronouns.’

A note on defining sets:

Deciding what to consider a variant, and what to consider a different set altogether, wasn't easy.

Elverson and Spivak pronouns are mostly separated because of their history, and how (relatively) well known they are. I then tried to stay consistent, and separated things like 'ze' and 'zey' sets.

Animal and sound based nounself pronouns are grouped based on how difficult it was to separate them. A relatively high percentage of people wrote 'kit' and 'cat' forms into the same entry. Less people grouped 'mew' and 'nya' forms. And, while 'mew' and 'nya' forms were FREQUENTLY grouped with 'kit' and 'cat' forms, I kept them separate for my own sanity.

I am also VERY glad that 'sie/sier' pronouns didn't make the top 25. 'Sie', 'se', 'sea', 'ce', and 'ke' are probably unsortable without talking to their users individually. (There's at least three pronunciations in there - 'zee', see' and 'kee'!) But I love the 4 people using 'sir' as a pronoun. That amuses me!

Writing characters who use they/them pronouns

If in the context the character might be mistaken for a group go ahead and just use their name

In the case this does not apply, use pronouns

If you say the character's name once in the sentence before, or in the previous sentence it is okay to use a pronoun

You do not have to point out that the character uses they/them pronouns; sometimes that can be strange in the context of the story. It can be subtle if you want!

All of this also applies to writing other characters, sometimes you have to watch your pronouns because it can cause confusion for the reader. It is not weird or odd to have characters who use they/them pronouns or if you really want to take an extra step, make the character use neopronouns. It might help if you are struggling with using they/them too much.
