#neurodivergent friendly study resources

Text
So like . . . I have a lot of experience with academic-level writing, and I've been studying creative writing for over a decade (including professional seminars and a special high school program for writers). I generally know what I'm talking about when it comes to writing and editing, at least on a technical level. I've had experience working with APA and Chicago Manual style (Chicago is what most creative writing seems to use, in my experience) and I have a handful of resources I'd love to share.
Would anybody be interested in a (hopefully neurodivergent-friendly) series on writing skills? I mostly mean things like grammar, syntax, punctuation, formatting--the things that make your writing as readable and polished as possible. I do have some advice as far as the creative side (voice, tone, theme, word choice, etc), but I understand if that advice isn't as welcome! I also understand if your response is "who the fuck do you think you are to give out advice?" But that would be kinda hurtful.

for anon asking about NPD/ASPD resources
For context, anon sent in an ask searching for nonstigmatizing resources for support with PD diagnoses and other stigmatized diagnoses.
And this is such a good ask--it is so fucking frustrating and dehumanizing to try to search for support when half the stuff that pops up is using really cruel language or just directed towards family and friends. The community definitely deserves better, both when it comes to the way psych professionals perpetuate stigma and in regards to the prejudice and sanism that shows up in other communities in our lives. Unfortunately, I don't have a ton of resources on hand, although I do know one good support group. The rest of the resources I know of are kind of mediocre or not PD specific, so if other people could add on I would really, really appreciate it!
Neuromancers runs a discord and a Cluster B peer support group that I've heard really good things about. I haven't been myself, so I can't 100 % vouch, but they're a group with abolitionist and mad pride values.
This might not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's an article exploring cultural bias in PD diagnosis that links to a lot of sources that talk about how psychiatry contributes to stigma around personality disorders. I clicked through some of the studies that it links to and it does use a lot of medicalized language, but I thought I would link the article anyway in case it's ever helpful to have academic sources to show to other people.
Also not exactly what you're looking for, but another article debunking some of the common talking points about NPD in pop psychology (Content warning that it is discussing some very ableist myths in the context of challenging them)
Last sort of general resources for peer support that I have some trust that they are PD friendly are the Wildflower Alliance and Hearing Voices Network Groups. Wildflower alliance groups offer a lot of different general peer support and I have one friend with NPD who has spoken positively of those spaces. Hearing Voices Network groups can vary a lot depending on location, so defintely plan to email ahead, but I've been to a few groups that welcome people who generally identify as psych survivors/mad/ex patients who want to share community spaces around those values. Also want to share is the neurodivergent friendly workbook of DBT skills (the link is to buy it directly from the creator but if anyone who is interested can't afford it rn, dm me and I'll send you a pdf.) Again, I know this is really not super relevant to what you asked for but is one of the less stigmatizing, less medicalizing workbooks I can find for accessing info about coping skills and this is one of my general favorite support resources.
Overall I'm really sorry that I don't have better resources to offer you, and I think that really should be a sign to the mad pride/psych abolition/peer support community that we need to do a lot better job in making sure that our spaces are explicitly welcome to people with stigmatized PD diagnoses. The work shouldn't have to be on you to try to navigate these spaces and figure out whether or not you're welcome, and any spaces that offer peer support, are aligned with mad pride and psych abolition, really should be doing the work to make sure lateral violence and sanism aren't being perpetuated.
followers, esp followers with lived experience, please add on!

Welcome to Our Blog!
[Last Updated: 6/17/2023]
This is a space for us from @reticent-fate to put posts related to spirituality. We are a disordered plural system, and collectively you can call us DG (plural they/them). A few of us from the system will be using this blog, and you can meet us below! We will also have our own expanded bio pages (eventually). Also at the end of this post will be our DNI (because boundaries are important! Block us if you don't feel comfortable with us interacting with you!).
We created this blog due to feeling like there was very little space in the resources we've been collecting for people like us, both specifically as a plural system and more broadly as a member of the neurodivergent (and psychpunk adjacent) community.
There's a lack of discussion on the intersection between spirituality and psychology in most of the resources we've seen, and we'll occasionally post quite a bit about that (we have a special interest in behavioral psychology and consider ourselves psychpunk); likewise, we'll occasionally post about how plurality in particular affects our spirituality.
Please note: many of our headmates are otherkin, including some headmates that identify as spiritual entites (such as demons and deities). Our system has very hard rules about boundaries regarding identification as spiritual entities; in general, systems cannot control what introjects appear, but as it stands, there are stopgaps and gatekeepers in our system that regulate our relationship to things we can tell might trigger splits of this variety. Additionally, we do not allow our headmates to maintain names of spiritual entities they may "split" from (unless they are insourced, like Narty). That said, if a headmate still identifies as a spiritual entity (ie: as a shard), then they only identify that way functionally within our system. Do not be weird about this, please. Please please please.
We mention it because it is a huge part of why spirituality has been so difficult for us, and we will bitch about it on occasion. We are not saying we are anyone's god, nor are we demanding you treat us that way. The spiritual connection to the divine is a complicated, messy thing. Especially for systems like ours. Don't. Be. Weird about it.
Mods
Ellia (she/her) - The brains behind this operation (/joking). From the same innerworld source as Artura. Responsible for an irresponsible collection of tarot decks bought on clearance for the sake of "science" (comparing the Five of Cups in them all). Also responsible for making this blog, because she got sick of hearing advice that's excessively difficult to employ for plural systems, let alone headmates with exomemories under other stars. Practices a mishmash hodgepodge of tiny things here and there. Trying to reconstruct her beliefs from fragmented exomemories, which included dice divination and a more casual/friendly relationship to the innerworld gods.
Sol (he/him, they/them) - The guy that's really interested in Christianity as a concept. The holy weirdo to contrast Heitaros's demonic shenanigannery and Narty's apathetic middle ground. Doesn't practice Christianity so much as the study of it is his practice (especially scholarship that remembers the more radical Table Flipping Jesus that was 100% an anticapitalist anarchist). Especially interested in the lens of self-care and "holy" endeavors through the body as extension of the divine; ie: "there is divinity in all things and thus it is my duty to be kind to all things not willfully cruel; that including the self."
Heitaros (he/him) - A fictive who has his own otherkin blog, but also is vaguely spiritually weird because of it. Both identifies as Heitaros (a character) and partially with the concept of Satan as Accuser (in his understanding/role in-system: that which questions, especially with regards to structures). Interested in the intersection of psychological and spiritual (like Narty) but more from the perspective of an entity that recognizes where psychological origins can exist while embracing the messy spirituality that his identity imbues him with. His practices primarily involve a lot of hodgepodge like Ellia (he's a system host, so he kind of has to keep a hodgepodge going), but he's interested in lucid dream working, as well as past life work due to his otherkin identity.
Artura (he/him, they/them) or Nova (he/him) ; Sometimes referred to as Narty- From the same innerworld source as Ellia. God of Light, Linear Time, and Magic. Technically a two for one deal. The local anthropology nerd(s), that essentially practices through research. Mostly research. Like an obscene amount of research. May only show up when he wants to complain about ableism and Ellia isn't able to type her thoughts on the matter. Particularly interested in the intersection between psychological and spiritual (like Heitaros), from the idea of psychology as a bastardized spiritual practice (this is a very reductive explanation, and we have a lot to write about it; this isn't saying psychology is religion, but it is saying that functionally speaking, structures associated with psychology lend itself to the interpretation of the psychological as intrinsically spiritual). Generally dislikes dabbling in practice if it involves the risk of disturbing entities or could exacerbate system-wide anxieties. Plays the role of headspace therapist and thus is more interested in dissection of craft and understanding psychology through the spiritual lens (especially at the edges of where hard science and data cannot map).
Important Tags
#[Mod Name] - Anything posted for the perusal of individual headmates* running the blog.
#[Mod Name] talks - What it says on the tin*!
#ramblings - Catchall for the above tag
#ref mats - Self explanatory as well!
#disability - Posts about disability, because this blog is about the intersection of disability and spirituality
#promo - Posts promoting other folks' stuff (ex: tarot readings, pendulum readings, etc.).
More tags to be added!
*Note: Since Nova and Artura are a median subsystem, sometimes their posts may include both their names. Narty is our fun nickname for the research disaster duo, but not a great functional tag lol.

Blog Post 8 Digital Project Review Draft
Dr. Kathleen Thompson’s Ratification of the 19th Amendment: Timeline Map is a digital tour through the US centered on the sites where each state ratified the 19th amendment. This work is a thematic research collection with links to additional works in women’s history. Perhaps poorly named, the project is much more a map and archive than a timeline.
Hosted on Clio, a site typically used for generating local historic walking tours, and an interesting choice for a nationwide “timeline map”. The tour features a Google maps base route to each of the 48 state houses where ratification took place. While the tour through the state house follows the chronological order of ratification the site fails to provided a timeline that truly portrays the difference in speed at which each state ratified the amendment. This is especially unfortunate as the roughly 50 year difference between the first few states to ratify and the last featured, Florida, is reflective of the long fight suffragettes faced to secure women’s rights prior to the introduction of the 19thamendment.
On the tour, each stop features a quick introduction the to state’s path to ratification. Additionally, digitized pictures, three dimension rendering of the state capitols,  and news articles provide visualizations to enhance the entry. The site’s strongest point comes from the additional information links at each site. These links lead to additional sources on women’s fight for equality in each state. They  feature both additional digital resources as well as places to obtain printed materials on the topic. These link form the basis of the archive which can generate continued research on the subject.
Besides these outside links, the site is lacking in contextualization. It does not address the historiography of women’s rights. Not only does it fail to fully realized the temporal delays in ratification after congressional adoption of the amendment, it fails to address the larger social, cultural, and economic factors the influenced ratification.
The  site is very user friendly. The site works well on mobile platforms, which makes it a prime resource for our increasing on the go culture. Additionally, built in speech to text services are available on each page for the stops through out the tour. This increases the sites accessibility for neurodivergent visitors, as well as those with sight-related difficulties. The site also includes full citations for  each page, which can encourage student use of the site in  their own works.
Overall, the site appears to be more of an archive to support additional research than a fully developed historiographical narrative. As such, it is bound to receive intense scrutiny as a work of scholarly inquiry. However, archival sites like this are equally important in increasing accessibility to historical study as those with clearer narratives. Indeed, one may ever argue sites like this that leave interpretation up to the user are more apt to generating additional research than those that tell the use what to think.

Hello! I was wondering what textbooks you would recommend for someone looking to get into mathematical proofs and introductory physics. I don't have physics in my courses this year so any notes would be helpful. Thanks!
Hello there!
I am glad you approached my ask box (or me).
Unfortunately I may not have the answers you might be searching, but I found Keith Devlin's book Introduction to Mathematical Thinking helpful as an intro. (It's neither a textbook nor is it exactly about mathematical proofs.)
Do my fellow math peers here know some good textbooks and want to share? Please feel free to reblog with some infos and references. (I would like to know some good books about mathematical proofs as well.)
As for physics I consider the Feynman lectures merely well-written.
[Caltech has uploaded the Feynman lectures as digital format/website:]
Another source I enjoy is Hyperphysics. [... although it is not a textbook either, but a good website]
It's a very neat and very basic html website with many good javascript boxes to directly play with some equations, as well as it contains well-summarized information and an overall good visualization and explanation of the concepts.
The mindmaps with topics (and sub-topics) are clickable:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sub-topics are chunked into well-summarized: boxes:
Tumblr media
And the plain/simple javascript forms are helpful for getting a quick intuitive feeling for the concepts when playing around:
Tumblr media
(It helps me to make it compatible with my imagination. I don't know if other people might find this helpful as well.)
I consider this website merely neurodivergent-friendly, as it's well-summarized, well-structured, well-visualized, chunked, minimalist and quick-to-the-point, while also using very basic design, which makes it quick to load as well as more minimalist to look at - meaning less distraction and more focus for the depicted topics/concepts.
And you have an index window on the side which you can close:

So today, I tried out a free study group through https://www.adhd-hub.com/.
I'm trying to find some ways to motivate myself, which I've been struggling a lot with as the pandemic gets worse and my work load shifts to more computer work for the winter.
I did not have high hopes for yet another zoom meeting being helpful, but it was actually a delight.
It was a two hour block of time, broken into check in, three 30 minute work sessions with ten minute breaks, and a closing. There was ZERO judgement about what you did during your time or whether it was related to your original intention. (Like for real, one guy made lunch and brushed his teeth during one of his blocks.)
So if you're looking for a free resource to get some shit done that you can't do on your own, whether that's brush your teeth, do your bio homework, or answer that email you've been putting off, I tentatively think these people are neat.

Hi. The following is my attempt to systematically hash out the “Mr. Infodump” controversy in the TS fandom. It’s primarily for my benefit, but I’m posting it on the off chance it helps someone else who’s just as confused/dismayed as I was. I’m not attempting to argue for blind absolution (”Thomas is an angel who can do no wrong!”) or cancellation (“He’s no better than the likes of J.K. Rowling!”), just to present as intellectually honest an assessment as I can make of what happened and the degree to which the TS team is responsible.
Laconic: Thomas Sanders, a content creator on youtube, posted a skit in which a character calls an aspie-coded character “Mr. Infodump”. Several fans have expressed hurt and anger over the use of a trait associated with neurodivergence as an insult.
My own initial impression: I’m on the autism spectrum myself, and personally, “Mr. Infodump” didn’t register as offensive to me; in fact, as a huge Logan kinnie, I liked that a neurodiverse trait I see in myself was being explicitly linked to my favorite character. That said, there are many in the community who feel deeply hurt and betrayed, and it would be a) irresponsible and b) close-minded to handwave their concerns. Thus:
[Abridged version: Bolded]
Context for use of the word:
Line from Roman: “I was going for regal sophistication [in last commercial pitch], but Mr. Infodump over here [*gestures to Logan*] wasn’t cooperating.” Defensive tone, alluding to the fact that Logan’s commercial pitch included excessive product information that would leave buyers disengaged.
History: Roman regularly invents nicknames for fellow sides and employs them in a manner that can range from fond teasing to a juvenile way of insulting the side he’s presently bickering with.
Names previously directed at Logan include “Calculator watch,” “Egghead,” and “No-Funsen Honeydew… Doo.” They generally play off of Logan’s tendency toward being uptight, stereotypically nerdy, and eager to furnish the group with information in the capacity of a teacher.
In this particular instance, I doubt anyone would say the word’s use was “malicious,” but it wasn’t “affectionate” either. Roman is visibly preoccupied and defensive in the scene, throwing out a nickname offhand.
Power Dynamic: There is no imbalance of power between Logan and Roman that would indicate anything resembling a bully-victim relationship. Logan responds to the word in the same manner he does Roman’s other antics and displays no particularly hurt reaction.
In-Universe Response: No character corrects or condemns Roman’s use of the term. This may, however, be because Logan is the first to respond, armed with his own complaints about the others’ commercials.
Meta-Level Implications: The audience is not encouraged to agree with Roman’s sentiment that infodumping is a negative trait anymore than they are his other commentary on Logan via nicknames like “Egghead,” because Logan’s role in the story consistently proves it wrong; all that infodumping saved an unconscious Roman from his murder-happy brother, for one, and the audience knows it. Given the posturing and defensiveness that accompany Roman’s delivery of the line, it’s clear the creators were communicating that he was in the wrong to say it. That, and Logan will almost certainly reinforce this by verbally decimating someone in the next episode, as per usual.
I think that last point is key. People will accuse others of infodumping in a negative way IRL—I know I’ve been called far worse for failing to mask—and to pretend that such things don’t exist in fiction is misrepresenting reality. Instead, creators can and should include minority characters (race, sexuality, gender, neuroatypicality, etc.) *confronting* discrimination, dealing with it complexly, and showing both the misguided character and the audience how wrong they are. Logan resonates with me—and other aspies, I think—largely because of how he clearly struggles in dealing with the other sides’ occasional criticism of his eccentricities, but he ultimately remains committed to his identity and ideals. If the TS crew continues to write a show that reinforces the fact that his neurodivergent qualities are what make him strong—and god knows there's not much media that does this well—, they’re doing something incredibly important for us.
The issue here, then, wasn’t the show promoting ableism as a message, because its handling of the conversation here doesn’t. Rather, it was the use of a term that many consider inherently ableist as an insult. So:
“Infodump” the word:
I find this fascinating, actually—Science is discovered. Math is discovered**. Language? Language is unequivocally invented. We’ve create these words with combinations of mouth-sounds, and we’ve assigned them meaning.
But the thing is, people have different backgrounds and experiences that define both who they are and the nuances of the meaning they tie to those mouth-sounds
Basic example of varied mental prototypes: I live in the northeast USA, so when I hear the word “bird,” the first thing that pops into my head is a bluejay or robin. If you ask my friend who’s studying in Brazil, though, he’d likely think of a macaw or toucan.
For me, “spring” = my mom’s pink zinnia garden and “chocolate” = a square of hershey melting against gooey marshmallow. This idea of memories and experience informing word-meaning mapping, of course, extends to a) more nuanced concepts and b) a more subconscious level of understanding. Poetry in particular, I think, tends to play with this to invoke the sensory experiences it does... I could infodump about translated poetry but that’s a whoooollleee other thing and I’m getting off track.
But essentially, an individual’s experience of any given word, to a degree, is subjective. Our dictionary definitions are merely approximations of a collective understanding of that mouthsound-to-meaning mapping, and we have to update those definitions as language evolves (remember when “Google” couldn’t be used as a verb?)
So, what happens if I look up “infodumping”? TVTropes tells me it’s a “type of exposition that’s particularly long and wordy”. UrbanDictionary says its “used to deposit large amounts (usually entire articles) of information in online forums without summarizing or paraphrasing the information.” I reach the resources that explain it in the context of autism and ADHD over halfway down the Google results. The word “infodumping” has quite a few circulating meanings, and the one associated with neurodivergence isn’t as visible as we’d like it to be.
From what I understand, Thomas Sanders and co. merely knew “infodumping” as the practice of talking at length about a subject, like closing a rant with a friendly “aw, sorry for infodumping on ya” and such. This was exactly how Logan opens his commercial, so they stuck it in as a—frankly, kinda feeble—nickname á la the creative genius behind “Mr. Smarty... Pants”. They had no knowledge of the term’s gravity to the autism and ADHD community, because they haven’t been exposed to settings that use that definition.
So, where does that leave us on accountability? If they’re ultimately not producing ableist content, do Thomas Sanders and his team have the responsibility to be aware of how an insult featuring this particular word might be inherently triggering to a community?
Many accounts show that the inclusion of the term caused real emotional harm and as content creators—particularly ones with a relatively young fanbase—the TS team should have taken more precautions. A more diverse staff/writing room may have caught this, given how egregious some fanders found the error. Furthermore, why shouldn’t it fall on neurotypical people in general to “educate themselves” on these issues, as in the cases of other minority groups?
That said, however, can any creative team be reasonably expected to know of any-and-all potentially triggering content? I’ve avoided speaking of Thomas Sanders’ personal character to maintain some impartiality, but a long history of promoting representation and careful content warnings does suggest a genuine commitment to self-correcting. Accepting the well-intentioned criticism of fanders—many of whom are so broken up by this precisely because of the amount of faith they place in the TS team—and taking active steps to change is ultimately the best course of action, and I, for one, will be sticking around to see the results.

Carnival of Aros - Open Questions for Aromantic Research
This month has been a little bonkers for me as I come to the end of my Master’s degree, but perhaps it’s fitting that August 2020′s prompt for the Carnival of Aros aligns with the culmination of my research.
As always, my (very many) thoughts are under Keep Reading.
The first thing I thought when I saw this prompt was: “Do I have to formulate an actual fancy official set of Research Questions??” If grad school has taught me anything, it’s that research questions are incredibly difficult to pin down, and they’re always changing as the research is undertaken. The aro community, especially, has rapidly changing terms as we try to figure out our place in the world.
So, instead of creating Actual Research Questions (TM) - because I’m quite burnt out with my own for grad school already, hahaha - I’m going to give some general ideas.
In-Progress and Previous Surveys (a.k.a. Neir Is Trying Really Hard Not To Write A Literature Review)
It is maybe a little silly to be brainstorming future research when I haven’t finished analyses for the 2019 surveys I was a part of. Since I started aro research, I’ve been learning a lot about the community, and we’ve even managed to get a first aro census out there. That’s three in-progress in-depth surveys that include aro individuals.
I’ve run a couple of iterations on aro stigmatization + microagressions (see #arospec stigma survey tags). Things like discovering one’s aro identity and just general demographics are covered in the #a-spec identity survey and the aro census.
There is also research I’ve seen on various aro experiences, aro relationships, aro activism, amatonormativity, and mental health. Full disclosure, I help manage AUREA’s Research resource page so whenever I hear about something, chances are it’ll get posted there.
Future Exploratory Research
I think there is a tonne of exploratory research that we need to do, some of which will have to be done over as the aro community and the environment around us change. I think the most important thing with this research is to listen to what aros want. There are a lot of sub-communities and identities under the aro umbrella, and even others that are in a gray zone that might not be picked up by usual aro research.
In terms of what I would personally love to run on the exploratory side of things, I’d like to investigate:
the experiences of individuals who relate to the aro community but do not [always] see themselves as a part of it
the intersection of aromanticism with disability, neurodivergence, and other demographic factors - how these might affect aros and their wellbeing in different ways
the history of aro voices in the Discourse Era
the evolution of aro terminology
the evolution of aro communities in different countries
the relationship between the aro community and other Queer communities (i.e., comparative studies)
Of course, seeing aro representation in academic studies not specifically focused on aromanticism or orientation would be wonderful. Figuring out how to word surveys and instructions to be inclusive to aros is perhaps its own study.
Future Interventionist Research
I have also been thinking about interventionist research. As the aro community grows and connects globally, our activism grows with us. More of us are out and about, talking about aromanticism, giving speeches, presenting workshops, and interacting with people who usually aren’t anywhere near our circles.
I’d like to have researchers document how aros go about their activism, particularly in different locales, so that we can take inspiration.
How can we leverage both online and offline activism to different ends? How can we connect the online and offline spheres? How can we connect aros internationally, through language barriers? What makes an effective awareness campaign? Where have we seen success and where have we seen failure? What can we learn for future ASAW and Pride events?
What kinds of partnerships are particularly effective for allyship? How can we team up with other marginalized individuals and work towards the same goals? Who would be best to reach out to first?
What kinds of aro-friendly programs or policies can we try out in our local communities? Do they succeed or fail? Why? What can we learn before confronting the bigger fish?
Testing things out is always better sooner rather than later. This way, we can build up momentum as a community and be ready when we find an opportunity to make a big policy push.
The great thing about a young field is its potential for new researchers. I personally can’t wait to see what the community comes up with over the years, and I look forward to meeting you all at some sort of conference someday. :)

Welcome to AutStudy!
Hello there, my name is Mattie, I am 19 years old, and I am an autistic undergraduate student. I love studying (maybe because I am studying my special interest), but sometimes it can be difficult to navigate the world of education as an autistic person who also has a bunch of illnesses (social anxiety, phobias and dysautonomia). Actually it is often very difficult, and there aren't many resources that I can use that were made specifically for people like me. Well, I'm going to try and change that! This is my autistic studyblr blog and here I will help you study to your best capacity, as well as document my path through university. Here's what you can expect on this blog: 1) short articles about all things study: from tips and tricks on how to manage executive dysfunction to best stim toys to take to school with you 2) reblogs of posts that I think are relevant and important to this topic 3) updates on my own life, obviously related to studying 4) discussions where other people can contribute their advice and ideas about certain questions 5) submissions from other people who wish to contribute 6) some autistic/neurodivergent/disabled/spoonie specific jokes because hey we all need a break from studying every now and then 7) photos of my messy notes because I can't resist 8) and every now and then some cute posts, like, I don't know, photos of kittens for example because hey, we also need a reason to cheer up So if you are autistic or otherwise neurodivergent/disabled and are currently in school, college, uni, or studying on your own terms, be sure to follow and tell your friends! I'll be here with my pretty pens, twenty empty notebooks and sensory-friendly study snacks. Allons-y!
