This chapter was a difficult one to hit 'post' on because - well, because of the subject matter, A - but also B, because I've known this was going to happen all along and have been dancing around it for ages trying not to give too much away, and usually the anticipation of that is fun - but it's not so fun when it's a really sad, negative thing I have to share!
And then of course, because of how the chapter breaks shook out, I'm left feeling like I buried the lede of this chapter, so to speak, way down at the end. Other things happen, too, that aren't Satine being diagnosed with cancer, but they're understandably very overshadowed by Satine's diagnosis.
But! In the midst of all that, Ahsoka quits swim team, Anakin and Padme find out they're having twins (that's really not so much of a surprise, though, is it? Only to the characters, not to us), Obi-Wan is still trying to bury his feelings, Ahsoka starts high school and makes friends with Barriss, and Anakin tries very hard to be a good dad.
Partly out of respect to the fact that I have no practical knowledge of neuroendocrine cervical carcinomas, malignant or otherwise, and partly just because it makes me sad and I didn't want to do it, this fic is pretty light on the actual medical stuff. (Where I'm better is with the dealing with the medical emergencies type stuff - insurance and FMLA and how much goddamn time you spend on the phone even when you have (or thought you had) quote-unquote 'good' insurance. So we'll hit those bits a little harder. Write what you know, and all that.)
It was also really, really important to me to show Satine's family, biological, by marriage, by choice, and otherwise - circling the wagons around her, and how each of them contributes. So it was time to bring back Bo-Katan, and Korkie, and Luminara (and Barriss), and Aayla, and have Anakin and Ahsoka and Obi-Wan all work out what their role in her care is, even though none of them have any medical training. Because none of this happens in a vacuum, and it's never just happening to the person who is actually sick.
