One piece of advice I will always give to new/beginner witches: try it. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, it doesn't.
You don't have to ask other witches if they think you should, if they think it would be a good idea.
Building a practice requires trial and error. You can't avoid trying things out and figuring things out on your own. If you're always seeking permission from others, then how are you going to build something that's yours?

On Mabon
As it's coming up I want to go ahead and clarify for any newer witches:
Mabon is on the Fall equinox, but the Fall equinox is not Mabon.
Some witches from other cultures may call it other things. Some may not celebrate it at all.
Mabon is known now to be a Wiccan holiday, but in actuality, it is the name of a Welsh god. While it's not uncommon for holidays to be named after deities, Aidan Kelly gave the Fall equinox that name for reasons he mentions in this Patheos post not too many years ago.
Secular, nontheistic, eclectic, or unlabeled witches may just call it the Fall or Autumnal equinox. It's better to ask someone if they observe it as such before wishing them a happy/blessed Mabon.
Wicca's Wheel of the Year was created by Gerald Gardner and other wiccans and takes pre-existing holidays, repackaging them as Wiccan and claiming they're a part of an "ancient" religion (it isn't ancient).
The holidays that were taken from their original cultures are ancient, however. The Celtic Lughnasadh, Samhain, Imbolc, and Beltane, the Germanic Yule, and the Anglo-Saxon's Lammas for example. These were all taken out of context, the cultures conflated, and more due to the appropriation of Gardner and others.
I personally don't care if you call it Mabon, it's just good to know the history of the holidays that you celebrate. I also wanted folks to know why there may be some funk around the use of the name.
My autumnal equinox post will be coming out soon where I talk about a bunch of different holidays and histories involving this equinox for anyone interested!

are there any safe hexes/curses for somewhat new witches?
On New Witches Doing Hexes/Curses
Disclaimer this is just my opinion. There's a lot of my own beliefs when it comes to spell work in here. You decide what you think!
(Disclaimer to the anon, a lot of this is making assumptions about you. I don't want you to feel attacked by this I'm just using it as a bit of a jumping off point for questions like this that definitely do have the intentions and assumptions I'm making here.) This question and questions like it are pretty impossible for me to answer and I'm going to explain why. First what counts as a new witch? A week in? 6 months? A year? Someone could be any of those and have or have not done the research I personally as an individual would consider necessary. Someone could be at any of those points and have a spell backfire. Somewhat new to me does not assume that someone has not studied what I would consider the "essentials" or whatever is essential to their practice/tradition/beliefs for spell work. I don’t want to assume that they haven't put in the work to do a spell. They may have or have not could and I have no way of knowing. Especially with an anon.
I would then ask what is safe to you? If it is free from risk or backfire, I'd argue most spells that work aren't safe. If it is relatively free from risk or backfire, hexes and curses don’t tend to fit that category relative to other spells. The level of risk depends on the situation.
I know you probably want a straightforward answer but how am I supposed to give you that? I get questions structured like this fairly often. I'm not assuming that this is what you mean, but it usually really comes across to me that the person wants an experienced witch to label something as "safe." I'm not gonna do that because I don’t know you or if it’s safe for you. You are your own best mentor and have to take accountability for your spell work and that's part of what makes witchcraft so wonderful to me. Spell work is too complicated for me to slap the safe label on it.  I don't think spells exist in a "safe" or not safe category. I don't think witches either fit in a "new" "somewhat new" or "not new" category. There are hundreds of topics encompassed by witchcraft. I might be years in and know nothing about someone else's practice. They may also be years in and understand nothing about mine. A new witch may or may not know anything about spell work and an old witch may just now be approaching it. To me it comes down to if you've done the research necessary for spell work and even that varies witch to witch. For example a lot of witches would cleanse/ward/cast a circle before a spell. If you do those why, if you don't why not? Do you have alternatives? Do your beliefs disregard or alter these practices? Often what makes a spell safest in my opinion isn't the spell itself but preparation, warding and understanding of the methods/ingredients/consequences of that exact spell. It’s the witch that makes it safe. You’ll have to answer those questions for yourself. You'll need to know what that preparation and understanding is for you and the spell, and we’re back to the question “what is safe to you?”
One of the first spells I did and wrote was of a baneful nature. I wouldn't usually suggest that because a lot of people I come across on the internet lack research skills because they don't know any better, but I had read every scrap of information I could find and I personally was ready. I don't say this to say I'm better than anyone else because many very new witches suggest things I'd never even think of. I say this to make a point that it isn't as simple as "safe" or "new." I knew there was a risk and I took it. With the proper research I'd say most spells are relatively "safe" at a variety of levels. A new witch can do a banishing spell or hex or whatever and it can work.
All spells have risk of backfire. If you're interested in doing magic like that you have to decide if you're ready and if the risks are worth it. And if you don't know them? My messages are always open and I'd be happy to have a back and forth with you and decide if you're open to really doing something like that and if you need questions answered or further research/resources. I'd also be happy to find a spell that fits your needs if you wanted to go with something tamer or just need help with finding the right spell for you.
There is never any shame in learning 💕

A piece of advice that might be helpful for people that are just starting their witchcraft journey is you really only "need" two books. One to teach you and one to inspire you. And these don't even have to be books that you own, there are plenty of books on magick & witchcraft at the library.

I just want to say that it's okay to let witches who are new to their craft make mistakes. We can give advise, mentor all we'd like but in the end it is their decision to do the things they wish to do.
Mistakes will be made. The journey is what is most important. They'll gain experience and wisdom along the way. If we don't let them make mistakes, or shame them for those mistakes, we are robbing them of that knowledge and wisdom.

🎨🕯️Art Magic: Flameless Spell Candle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Use an LED tealight or pillar candle and wrap with decorative papers. Use color and other correspondences and enchant your tools as you work! Attach personally meaningful enchanted symbols, charms, confettis, crystals, petitions, and whatever else your heart desires! No fire safety needed here kids (except hot glue gun=hot). Build up intention related to your spell's result and release it into the candle when you're done❤️‍🔥
Please don't hesitate to ask any questions or make suggestions!

a concerning amount of witchblr will be like "um actually new years was stolen by europeans from the ancient god scroobus mcdoobus" and then you actually try to research scroobus mcdoobus and it turns out he was invented in the 1940s by a conspiracy theorist who powdered every meal with ketamine and thinks that queer people are reincarnated fish

I was asked on this post:
What can you say about closed practices and cultural appropriation? It seems like a REAL big thing in America and I don't really understand any of this thing at all, because every time someone asking about it, the answers seems passive aggressive. All witchcraft comes from somewhere, from different cultures, but some of them seems more offensive, that others, if this makes sense?
I said this part in another post of mine, but I can't talk too much about appropriation except what I've learned from others who are directly impacted by it.
So I'm instead going to link a few articles that may help out.
Cultural Appropriation - Wikipedia
What Does Cultural Appropriation Really Mean? By Ligaya Mishan
What Distinguishes Cultural Exchange from Cultural Appropriation? by Rivka Galchen and Anna Holmes
What I can say about appropriation is that you should listen to those who are from the culture or religion where a practice originates and hear what they have to say about it. They'll be able to help you understand better than I can <:
Of course, any of you who see this post that has directly dealt with cultural appropriation please feel free to respond!!
