4, 12, 25, 27! -tierney kbsd :)
4. a story idea you haven’t written yet
I started a wip about gale and john in the stalag that was going to be about john being jealous/pining and dealing with the marge of it all but I never got far into it because I didn't have any concrete scene ideas, just a vague idea of the dynamic I wanted to write but who knows maybe I'll return to it someday
12. a trope you’re really into right now
anything hurt/comfort that has to do with tending to injuries I guess that's kind of a constant for me though I'm all about that hurt/comfort life
25. besides writing, what are your other hobbies?
I run, I make edits, I tweet a lot about mad men on my twitter, I like to make holiday cards from scratch, I haven't been doing it as much lately but paint by numbers! listening to music and making playlists
27. your favorite part of the writing process
probably just the part where I imagine the scenes in my head and plot out the general vibe of the scene or how I imagine things look. I'm a very visual person
thanks tierney!

"It was the IWW [Industrial Workers of the World or Wobblies] and the Finns that initially took the lead in supporting the Russian Revolution, which had profoundly influenced political developments in Finland.
...
According to A.T. Hill, local Wobblies “hailed the Russian Bolshevic [sic] revolution as something that had followed the IWW economic blueprint.” Mass meetings to protest the continued involvement of Canadian armed forces in Russia were organized. A “Friends of Russia” committee, composed of workers representing a number of organizations and trade unions in Port Arthur and Fort William, was also established. And, as Hill remembered, within the columns of the newly created Vapaus newspaper, members of the Finnish community could engage with recent events in Russia and forge closer bonds with fellow Finns working in other lumber camps. Many Wobblies viewed the Russian Revolution in much the same way as other socialist organizations in North America. Its success was seen as an indication that the end of capitalism was at hand and that workers in North America should take heart from the events in Russia. Despite becoming largely inactive in the region during the second half of the First World War, the IWW remained vigorous across the border in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Most notably, the Superior District Lumber Workers Industrial Union No. 500 continued to agitate and to lead strikes. It was among the lumber workers in Wisconsin and Minnesota and in classes taken at the Work People’s College in Duluth, Minnesota, that Hill spent much of the war.
Drawn to the growing unrest at the Lakehead, Hill moved to Port Arthur in 1917 and dedicated himself to the activities of local Finnish socialists. On behalf of the IWW LWIU [Lumber Workers International Union], Hill and those he recruited toured much of Northwestern Ontario in an attempt to organize workers and drum up subscriptions for Vapaus. Much of the IWW’s attention was focused on the Russell and Newaygo Timber Company and its operations within the district of Thunder Bay. Despite high hopes, in the end Hill was fired (both for his agitation and for conflicts with Lutheran Finnish workers). There now existed within the camps [thanks to the Russian Revolution] a rift between non-socialists and socialists, and debates over the various interpretations of Marxism.
The IWW appealed greatly to immigrant workers in Northwestern Ontario. As Holmer Borg, a Swedish lumber worker and IWW organizer, recalled in 1972:
The IWW organized through its members. Every member was expected to organize, not necessarily by having well organized meetings, [but] simply by talking among workers.
The IWW also tended to focus on the immediate issues that faced workers where they organized. In addition, many recent immigrants were drawn to unions whose organizers actually spoke their language. Most of the other established trade unions tended to send English-speaking organizers who had little or no actual experience in the regions they were visiting or with the workers they were trying to organize.
...
One report by the Dominion Police referred to the Finns in Port Arthur as “anarchists pure and simple.”"

Predicting the Second Round
Right. So, last year I made a set of the Major Arcana, but hockey related, and I was fortunate enough to get a physical set of them thanks to @newaygo. Let's see if they have any power in my hands. I decided to do a simple three-card reading for each second round series, under the read more:
Tumblr media
This is the format of each series. The bottom two cards are representative of each individual teams' journey through this series, while the top cards looks at the series as a whole.
Dallas v Seattle
Tumblr media
Dallas: While the upright Hierophant is a card strictly of tradition, the reversed Hierophant is the opposite -- a card that has broken free of the mold and can do whatever it desires. The Stars are an unconventional team, with unusual frontmen in an unusual market, and they have made the best of it. Their very existence challenges the way that ice hockey is or should be traditionally thought of.
Seattle: The reversed Hanged Man, like in Dallas, is a card of changed perspectives as well. Seattle is a new team and has been an underdog this whole time. This card is asking you to reconsider why you view them as an underdog, and what qualities hold it back.
The Series: Another reversed card. The upright World would mean an extremely good sign in this context, but the reversed one suggests delays, a frustrating lack of effort, even a choke if it might come to that. It is a warning to both teams: cutting corners will lead to disappointment.
Vegas v Edmonton
Tumblr media
Vegas: The upright Star means that whatever dangerous past occurred, it has been worked through. The magic has set in and anything is possible.
Edmonton: The upright Tower is a sign of sudden, potentially disastrous change. At some point in this series, something will go desperately wrong -- either for Edmonton or caused by Edmonton, like a dangerous hit on a valuable Vegas player, or a crucial Oiler going out with injury.
The Series: Judgement upright is a crucial turning point. This series features two Narratively important players in Eichel and McDavid, and for one of them it may mean something hugely significant -- the puzzle pieces are coming to a close. It is suggesting that whoever comes out of this series will make the Final, or is otherwise on the verge of a Cup... or something more sinister.
Toronto v Florida
Tumblr media
Toronto: The Wheel of Fortune means one thing: destiny. The Leafs have been held back by fate for so long, it may be their time to seize the series and move forward, riding their karma as far as they can. This card and the Leafs both are servants of fate. The Leafs may get their comeuppance.
Florida: The pack protects its own. Florida has already asserted that it has not come to fool around by upsetting Boston, and it has learned to make sense of the chaos and win. The Emperor is a fearless leader and protector, and Florida knows they have nothing to lose.
The Series: Justice signifies fairness above all. Cheating victory may work for a game, but over the series it will even out and the stronger team will win. The one that deserves to advance will.
Carolina v NJD
Tumblr media
Carolina: The upright Empress signifies abundance. Fitting in with Carolina's play style, which takes advantage of quantity over quality chances, this card means their expected-goals dominance will likely continue throughout the series.
New Jersey: We've seen the Tower before. Beware.
The Series: While the Tower on its own might spell death for the Devils, the combination of the reversed Emperor suggests the disaster could go either way. The Emperor himself is a strict, disciplined card, and reversed his rigidity becomes brittle and falls apart. Carolina's systems may fail them, and the injuries to their star power may be completely unable to support them.

some of the stories
Here I found a man who had thought out a formula for removing the smell from an onion, and a family of dwarfs whose parents had refused a good offer for all concerned to travel with P. T. Barnum’s circus. Here I discovered a professional dancer who never had worn a hatpin, for humanity’s sake. Down by the river there lived a woman whose father had been associated with Nathaniel Hawthorne in the Salem Custom House and who is said to have been the original of “Little Nannie.” Here resided a judge who held humane and advanced ideas in dealing with erring youth. On the outskirts of the town dwelt a Quakeress, a niece of the late Levi Coffin, who in thirty years prior to the Civil War passed 3,500 slaves to freedom.       In Hesperia, a long drive from Newaygo, for the place had no railroad, the main street ran through two counties. The river near-by had always been a temptation to smugglers. The local print shop did not print dance bills and Curfew rang at night.       East of Newaygo lay Oak Grove, settled by a few scattered farmers. In this hamlet occurred a tragedy that shook the State. Oak Grove sent a highway cow case to the Supreme Court that became famous because of the important ruling on a law point that had not before been decided. A black-hand letter scare drew long-distance calls from city dailies.       In my wish to get on I have not always remained in a small town, yet...

Weeks 41 & 42: Buckle up, buttercup
(Runner up quote since it was too long: "It's got a talking donkey, that's straight legitness right there")
Helloooooo again.  My life is a BLUR.  I don't know what's going on, and to be honest I'm actually kinda liking that feeling for once. I (unfortunately, you will understand why by the end of this letter) do not have all day, so you're getting one miracle story and a life update.
The miracle story begins with Thanksgiving.  I enjoyed Thanksgiving.  I did have a pretty sludgy morning and had a migraine all day, but that honestly helped me appreciate the opportunity for gratitude even more.  When I actually sat down and thought about it, there is a dang long list of things I love about my life.  I love the people I'm with.  I love the town I live in.  I love spending my days doing something that frequently brings joy (and always brings personal growth and meaning).  I love my freedom to use the resources and blessings I've been given to help others receive them also.  I love that I have the time and support needed to tackle my personal flaws head on, and take this time out of my life to erode those barnacles from my soul properly so that I don't spend the rest of my life halfheartedly attempting to pick them off.
Anyway, the point is gratitude really does make dealing with life's crap easier.  Plus I got to see my whole family on a video call, which was rad.  It was comforting to hear the chaos of my family's Thanksgiving, just how I remember it.
Anyway (pt. 2, electric boogaloo) midway through Thanksgiving we received a referral.  (A referral is the result of someone requesting to meet missionaries through an online ad.)  I initially intended to wait until the next day to call the number, but then remembered that I'm still a missionary regardless of what day it is so we called anyway.  The fellow immediately picked up, was very pleasant, and revealed that he was a new member who had moved here and didn't know there was a church in Fremont!  He kept talking and we weren't exactly sure what he was looking for, so we offered to come see him and he invited us over the next afternoon.  We had a long and deep conversation, and he eventually shared that there had been bizarrely peculier events that he could tell were God's way of pointing him in the right direction.  He had even been at a friend's house and Elder Thornton called his friend about something else months ago, thus alerting him to the fact that there were missionaries in Newaygo County.  We all marvelled at the intricacy and lengths the Lord will go to direct his children towards the right path, and our new friend took it as a sign that it was time to come back to church.  As we were talking, Elder Thornton and I simultaneously received a prompting to invite him to join us as we visited another struggling new member.  We don't know why the Lord wants us to do this, but we will surely find out soon.
Alright folks, now that you should all be feeling nice and inspired to go do the will of the Lord, here's what happens next.
We got transfer news on Saturday.  Within a 2 hour period, I discovered that Elder Thornton will be going to Bay City, I will be staying in Fremont to train another new missionary, and I would also be speaking in Sacrament meeting the following morning.  We then found out that I would need to travel to Lansing twice this week, and that the entire week's worth of appointments would need to be moved.  Because Elder Thornton would be moving and I would be travelling all week, we needed to pack.  We had 48 hours to do all of that and more.  I chose to say a prayer and trust that the Lord would give me the mental tenacity to accomplish all of that, and so far that prayer has been gracefully answered.  I feel pretty okay about things.  It's all been stressful, and as always I'm losing dear friends and stability in the transfer but I feel prepared for what comes next for once, and I'm so grateful for that and everything else.  I'm almost surprising myself with how calm I am about it all right now.  Training is a massive task, one that will subsume the next 3 months of my life.  I'm wondering if that's going to hit me later, or if I've truly just reached a whole new level of chill-ness.  I guess we'll all find out later.
The good news for all of you is that I'll be staying put for a while, so no more losing your mail.  (A big thank you to all you precious souls that keep sending me mail, by the way :)
I love you friends <3

EGLE awards 26 grants to conduct stream cleanups and monitoring
Source: EGLE newsroom
Tumblr media
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) today announced $97,681 through 26 grants to local governments and nonprofit organizations for stream cleanup and monitoring through the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps) program. These annual grants help foster local stewardship and a sense of community while providing valuable data used to protect Michigan’s waters.
The MiCorps Volunteer Stream Cleanup Program provides grants to local units of government to clean and improve Michigan waterways. Local governments often partner with nonprofits or other volunteer groups for the cleanups, which include removal of trash and other manmade debris from streams and stream banks.
The cleanup grant program began in 1998 and is funded by fees from the sale of Michigan’s specialty water quality protection license plates, available from the Secretary of State’s Office. The local governments selected to receive cleanup funding in 2023 are:
Benzie Conservation District, $1,098.
Branch Conservation District, $1,350.
City of Ann Arbor, $4,580.
City of Cheboygan, $4,999.
City of Flint, $3,731.
City of Lansing, $4,944.

Muskegon Conservation District, $3,633.
Newaygo Conservation District, $5,000.
Van Buren Conservation District, $2,877.
Joseph Conservation District, $1,865.
The MiCorps Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program provides grants to enable local governments and nonprofits to conduct volunteer-based water quality and stream habitat monitoring through benthic macroinvertebrate surveys and habitat assessments. Three types of monitoring grants are available. Startup grants get groups started with learning and planning, implementation grants fund the first two years of official monitoring, and maintenance grants help groups that are already monitoring replace equipment and continue their program. The organizations selected to receive funding in 2023 are:
Startup grant

MiCorps was established in 2004 by EGLE to engage the public in collecting water quality data for use in water resources management and protection programs. MiCorps is administered for EGLE by Michigan State University Extension, in partnership with the Michigan Lakes and Streams Association and Huron River Watershed Council.
