My Brother Racetrack

Newsies Shakespeare Camp AU

—Modern AU where Medda runs a summer camp where kids spend a few weeks putting on an abridged Shakespeare play

she tries to keep the kids organized but she also believes in letting them develop independence and creativity

also they're way less mature than she gives them credit for and she can't leave them unsupervised as much as she thinks she can

it's chaos half the time and they love it

—At the start of camp they're all supposed to work together to pick what play, and any interesting takes on said play, they want to do

David always wants to just do the play straight: original setting, original time period. He also knows more of the plays than the others (most of them just know famous ones like Romeo and Juliet), so he keeps suggesting lesser known ones until the others accuse him of making names up

Jack wants to do any drama/tragedy (Macbeth, Hamlet, anything with a high body count and preferably ghosts), but make it a Western

Racetrack tries to work gambling into any play. After all his ideas get rejected he starts running bets on who will fall off what piece of set/rigging next (because everyone's climbing all over everything with no regard for safety; you know these boys will climb anything). After Medda shuts that down, he settles for talking everyone he can into card/dice games during breaks and winning their pocket money. After Medda shuts that down, the camp develops its own currency consisting of markers, corks, scraps of fabric, and other snitched art/costume supplies. (Medda just gives up at that point.)

Someone brings up Richard III and there's an awkward moment where no one's sure how Crutchy will react because productions vary on how they portray it but Richard definitely has some sort of disability and he's one of Shakespeare's great characters but he also one of Shakespeare's great villains…but Crutchy thinks this is great and instantly starts campaigning for the group doing Richard III with himself in the title role

idk if they end up doing Richard III because it's pretty dark and politic-y for a kids' camp but either way Crutchy spends the rest of the camp insisting the others call him Richard, chasing people around cackling and threatening to behead them and take the throne. Also Crutchy's really bad at being Richard? He's such a cinnamon roll he just can't be evil and scheming to save his life but oh boy is he having fun

—Spot Conlon ain't afraid of any curse, and takes every opportunity to yell "Macbeth!" at the top of his lungs. This means Spot Conlon spends a lot of time spinning in circles and spitting over his left shoulder and doing whatever else the others make him do to ensure they don't all die horribly

I can see Racetrack being really superstitious? Like as a gambler he belives in luck and vibes and all that, and he just starts ranting about curses every time Spot says "Macbeth"

Jack thinks this is hilarious and starts encouraging Spot to say "Macbeth"

—Medda's running the camp out of a proper theatre with working backdrop rigging and everything. Les discovers he's light enough to get pulled up along with the backdrop. By the second day, Les, Snipes, Boots, Tumbler, and the other younger kids are launching themselves into the rafters while David yelps in horror, Jack urges them on, and Sarah laughs before dragging them down and getting Medda to put a padlock on the rigging or something

—Katherine's doing a journalism summer camp but everyone there is encouraged to find their own stories from around the community and she decides to do one on the Shakespeare Camp's performance

oh boy was this a mistake

she walks in planning headlines like "Future Stars in the Making" and "Pint-size Actors Bring Giant Talent and Charisma to Amateur Play", takes one look at the chaos, and realizes it's probably gonna end up being "Play Cancelled After Campgoers Break Their Necks Having a Paint-fight in Theatre Rigging" (they're supposed to be painting sets)

she's just about to walk out and find something else to do a story on when someone bumps into her

oh no it's a cute girl (it's Sarah)

oh no the cute girl is asking for her help moving props—someone named Jack was supposed to help her but he's snuck off to make out with her brother somewhere, like we don't all know they're together—and really, no, Katherine was just leaving and she's busy and—wow this girl is really cute when she's laughing about her brother thinking he's sneaky, and in the background Medda has successfully gotten the small children back on solid ground with unbroken necks, and maybe this article will work after all

Newsies! Merlin

Imagine Merlin as Jack, the unofficial leader of the newsboys in Camelot

Daegal as Crutchie

Our story starts with Merlin and Daegal, sleeping over the kingdom of Camelot, Merlin telling Daegal all about his plan to escape to a Druid village

That morning, they go down to work, selling papes for The World, run by the disdainful Uther Pendragon

They’re all happy though, carrying the banner tough and tall

One day, a new newsie called Lancelot (Davey) starts to sell papes

He has a younger sister, Gwen (Les)

(Not sure where to put this, but Morgana and Mordred as the Delancey siblings)

Merlin immediately befriends Lance, wanting to team up with them since Gwen is younger, and younger sells more papes

But then Uther jacks up the price of the papes (please imagine Uther getting a haircut and shave while singing “The Bottom Line”) 

He decides the price will be raised the next morning

Going back to the streets of Camelot, Agravaine as Snyder enters stage right

Merlin runs, bringing Lance and Gwen with him

They take refuge in a nearby theater-- Merlin knows the owner

Gaius as Medda Larkin and hear me out

He’s the parental kind of figure who supports the newsies and gives them any help they need

Also I just want to imagine Gaius as a stage performer

They hide out from Snyder and watch the show, and that’s when Merlin spots a very attractive blonde reporter

He finds out his name is Arthur and Tries Very Hard to flirt

Instead of sketching a picture like Jack does in the show, Merlin uses magic to impress Arthur

And though he’ll never admit it, Arthur’s in awe

The next morning, Merlin and the rest of the newsies (Gwaine as Race, Elyan as Specs, Leon as Elmer) find that the price of papes has been jacked up to 60 cents per hundred

And Merlin, with the help of Lance, forms a union and decides to strike

Arthur sees them and wants to write about the strike

Also just imagine Arthur singing Watch What Happens

The next day, Arthur continues to write and hangs out with the newsies as they try to recruit more people into joining their strike

MERLIN AND THE GANG SINGING SEIZE THE DAY ok that’s all

They’ve started to gain more support, but then the police show up, taking Daegal to the Refuge

Merlin runs back to his rooftop, belting out “Druid Camp”

And then intermission

Still frustrated about Crutchie and the strike, Merlin is nowhere to be seen as the rest of the gang sings King of Camelot when they see that they’ve made front page news (above the fold)

(Tiny! Gwen singing “an indoor toilet?” yes please)

Meanwhile, Daegal writes to Merlin from the Refuge (it’s very heartfelt. lots of emotions)

Shortly after, Lance, Gwen, and Arthur finally find Merlin hiding out in Gaius’s theater, who is working special effects for the theater with his magic

They all convince him to come back to the strike (Lance singing “poor guy’s head is spinning-”)

Anyways, Merlin shows up to Uther’s, wanting to talk about the strike

Except Arthur and Agravaine are there too, and Agravaine is still looking for Merlin

It’s revealed that Arthur is actually Uther’s son who wants to write, but for his father’s paper

Meanwhile, the Ealdor newsies show up, led by Percival as Spot Conlon

At a rally at Gaius’s theater, Merlin suggests they call off the strike, claiming that it’s too dangerous

Accepting Uther’s bribe, Merlin runs off, leaving all the other newsies in shock

Arthur chases Merlin back to his rooftop, only to find Merlin performing small spells

They get into an argument-- Arthur wants to know that Merlin didn’t cave for the money, and Merlin is mad because Arthur never told Merlin who he really was

But then Arthur kisses Merlin (I need them singing “Something to Believe In” oh my gosh)

They come to a solution: Arthur can call for a bigger strike in an article, reaching all working children and they start to plan

With the other newsies, Arthur and Merlin print their own paper and distribute it to working kids across the kingdom (*dramatic key change*)

Merlin goes to Uther the next day, wanting to see his reaction

They settle on a compromise, and the strike is over

Daegal returns from the Refuge and Agravaine is arrested

Merlin wants to leave for the Druid Camp, but he realizes that Camelot has his family and Arthur

And they all stay in Camelot, living happily together, carrying the banner

Crutchie Morris:

Loves photography and film

He participated in a photography competition and won!!!

Taking an online course in film

He makes a lot of mini films for fun, except their actually really good

Has been in the system since he was 7

Best friends with Elmer and Finch

He's got more friends, but those are just his closest 2

Huge extrovert

He misses Jack a lot (since Jacks in high school and he's still in middle school)

He has ADHD

Calls Medda “mom” sometimes

He's a plant dad sorry not sorry

Albert Dasilva:

Barely passing most of his classes, but he's trying his best

He recently broke up with his girlfriend so big oof

He lives with his dad (his mom died when he was 2)

Has 2 older brothers

His dad and brothers were super supportive when he came out!!! They bought him a pride flag and stuff!!!

Make him happy for once he deserves happiness guys

Nobody trusts him to be in a room or a house alone with Race because they can and will somehow burn that house/room down

Chose drama because Race and Jojo promised to help him with it but he's struggling

Kind of a teachers pet because he always participates in class and stuff, even if he doesn't have the best grades, he still enjoys learning

He's always moving because of his parents job but he's luckily been staying in Manhattan for a year now and will definitely be staying for a least one more

Our girl Sniper is a jazz dancer

She goes to a different school than the rest of them, but she met Sarah on a summer camp

She is also a fashion icon

Always has her hair dyed a very bright color

She changes color very often

She impulsively cut bangs and dyed her hair hot pink one day (mind you, shed gotten a haircut and re-dyed her hair not too long ago)

What even is mental health

This guy misgendered her on purpose once and someone broke his nose

It was her. She broke his nose.

Also the guy was Oscar

Smalls:

She is always getting into trouble

Her hair is really short and she got made fun of it at school (middle schoolers are unnecessarily mean okay)

Although they stopped when they met Spot because he's scary (?? even though he's shorter than some of them ??)

She struggles with maths and science but Spot tries to help her with it

They get into a lot of “fights” though

At this point are they even fighting or just joking

The world may never know

Medda Larkin:

The best character ever

Has taken both Race and Crutchie in, she's trying to do the same for Jack and eventually adopt all of them

She's trans!!!

She also owns a theatre

Spoiler alert she gets Snyder arrested

On another note, she also wants to adopt another kid called Romeo

Also she got them both Netflix and Disney+ and like,, Crutchie and Jack are constantly on Netflix, while Race and Romeo are always watching disney movies

Since i dont have much to say about him from before hes taken in by Medda, ill just skip to then

He gets along with the other boys immediately

chp 1: in which the jacobs siblings go up a mountain

Davey had never liked the outdoors. His summers were spent inside, ignoring the rest of the world, and consuming too much Harry Potter and current world events. He wasn’t particularly good at physical ed, since any strain past lugging a forty pound backpack around school was too much for him. He didn’t like flowers, or trees, or lakes, ponds, bushes, hikes, sports, or anything that could bite him and draw blood. (Not including Les, who had proved worthy of the title many times.) So the fact that he was currently in the passenger seat of Sarah’s car, listening to bad top 40’s music and making their way up a mountain was still beyond him.

“Lighten up, David. You got the job!” Sarah momentarily took her eyes off the road to tousle Davey’s hair, from which he wormed his way out of. He slumped even farther down the seat, making it very clear that he would continue pouting. She rolled her eyes and put both hands back on the steering wheel. Ten and two, just like their parents had drilled them for years. “Look. You get to write and nerd out all summer. Isn’t this like, your dream job? Shouldn’t you be nutting or something?”

He let out a short puff of air. “Don’t be gross, Sarah. I don’t nut at everything I get excited by.” As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Davey regretted it.

“Then what do you get ‘excited’ by, dear brother? I haven’t seen a girl around in a long while.” She paused a second before continuing. “Never, actually.”

“This is getting weird. Topic change please?” Sarah pursed her lips, rolling her eyes.

“Let’s talk about the fact that you just got your dream job and you also look vaguely suicidal.” Davey shut his eyes hard, letting the tinny voice of Justin Bieber (Possibly? They all sounded similar to him.) overwhelm him.

He opened them once the light exposure changed, finding them driving in a brightly lit tunnel. “My dream job has nothing to do with blood-sucking insects and ten thousand new ways to die.”

Sarah rolled her eyes for what seemed like the ten thousandth time. “You always get hung up over the mosquitoes, David. Plus, there aren’t any new ways to die besides drowning or eating poisonous berries, and you can’t drown on the best lifeguard in world’s watch!” Davey ruffled his eyebrows together.

“What about the other guy?”

“Anthony? If he got the job, he must have some skills. Plus, I heard he’s been going here for years, before he was an instructor.” Sarah wiggled her eyebrows, as if this would change Davey’s mind.

Their car passed out of the tunnel, flooding them with light once again. “How have you heard anything about this camp? We don’t know anyone, and I didn’t know of this place until three weeks ago.” Davey asked incredulously.

Sarah laughed. “I’m a teenaged girl, David. Stalking on social media is in my blood.” After she finished her sentence, the car made a turn and the sibling pair found themselves in a half-full parking lot, with a boy holding a sign that read: Employee Sign-Ins Here! Davey also took note of the boy next to him, clearly speaking with the poster boy but also scribbling madly on a clipboard. Sarah pulled into a parking spot and put the car in park slowly, and stopped the car altogether. Suddenly, she turned and grabbed Davey’s cheeks like their mother did as she was punishing them when they were younger.

“David Maureen Jacobs.” Davey tried to squirm away.

“My middle name isn’t Maureen, I’ve told you-”

The grip on his cheeks tightened, and he winced. “Bubala. You will have fun this summer, and you will learn. Try and smile every once and awhile, and I think you’ll do great. Yes?” The grip remained iron-tight, and he just sighed. “Nod your head yes if you want me to let go, Davey.”

He managed to look slightly peeved instead of moderately disturbed as he nodded, but Sarah let go as he massaged his face. “Can you even call me Bubala? That’s like, a mom thing.”

Sarah turned back at him one last time before getting out of the car. “I can do whatever the hell I want to keep you here, mom’s permission.” With that, she slammed the car door shut.

Except say hell at a children’s summer camp, he thought as he stepped into the sun.
