『Day995-2-013』 Going to the Aquarium in Niigata City. A small human met big fish.

From @keiko_conservation_japan. New year, new #FreedomFriday features with @oceanicpreservationsociety. This week we're featuring #OkinawaChuraumiAquarium (#沖縄美ら海水族館). We're doing these features so that anyone who feels passionately about this issue (hopefully all of you 🤗) can familiarize yourself with the individual facilities, especially with the Taiji killing season happening now. You can visit the link in our bio to learn a bit more about this facility (as well as a special write up on the sharks this facility holds by @kokocousteau) and a couple ways you can help, even if it's just from your phone or laptop. Go to opsociety.org to learn all about the global movement they created with the film #TheCove or go to cetabase.org to dive in deep on the history and records of captive dolphins. And make sure you're following @dolphin_project to stay up to date on this year's Taiji drive fishery season. As always, feel free to repost and spread the word. 🌊 #oceanicpreservationsociety #ops #keikoconservation #dolphinproject #dontbuyaticket #九十九島パールシーリゾート #横浜八景島シーパラダイス (Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise) #志布志湾大黒イルカランド (Shibushiwan Daikoku Dolphin Land) @masato_yano #axyz #イルカショー (Dolphin Show) #鴨川シーワールド (Kamogawa SeaWorld) #海遊館 (Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan) #IMATA #下田海中水族館 (Shimoda Aquarium) #のとじま水族館 (Notojima Aquarium) #浅虫水族館 (Asamushi Aquarium) #名古屋港水族館 (Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium) #桂浜水族館 (Katsurahama Aquarium) #bokukuji #ボクはボク、クジラはクジラで、泳いでいる #南知多ビーチランド (Minami-Chita Beach Land) @imata_trainers @triview.tv #みさき公園事務所 (Misaki Park) #マリンピア日本海 (Niigata City Aquarium) #しながわ水族館 (Sea Life Park) #日本ドルフィンセンター (Japanese Dolphin Center) #新江ノ島水族館 (Enoshima Aquiarium)

An article about current situation of sea otters in captivity in Japan written by a care staff at Suma Aqualife Park. Translation by sea otter channel.
Sea otters in captivity: the past and the future
Sea otters, adorable creatures floating on their back, might not be seen in Japanese aquariums in near future. Today, Suma Aqualife Park KOBE is home to two sea otters: a 19-year-old female and a 20-year-old male who came as a potential mate from Niigata City Aquarium. The average age of sea otters in Japanese aquariums is 15 years old, which indicates the severe aging of captive animals who live typically 15 to 20 years. Also, the number of animals in captivity dropped from 122 in 1994 to 10 as of today. Why did this happen?
There may be two prominent reasons. First, import of sea otters from overseas has ceased. Sea otters range off the North Pacific and divided in three subspecies by the habitat: northern sea otter, southern sea otter and Asian sea otter. Most animals accepted in Japanese aquariums are the northern subspecies. Although wild population has reportedly increased in some areas today, the population was decreased to near extinction from late 18th century to early 20th century due to over hunting for the fine fur and the sea otter has listed as endangered by IUCN. It was in 1982 when Japan first imported sea otters from the United States. Subsequently, trading of sea otters has regulated by CITES, and 1998 was the last year when Japan imported sea otters from the United States.
Second, breeding otters born in captivity has not worked very well. Of 300 sea otters in Japanese aquariums two thirds were born in captivity and most of them did not have parents born in captivity but parents captured in the wild. Wild animals can learn how to nurse their young and how to mate from others, but captive animals have much less opportunities to do so. Mating of sea otters can be very aggressive and a male often holds a female from back and bites her in the nose. In captivity, some males give up to mate once they are denied by females. We have worked to promote breeding in captivity by making efforts such as showing otters videos of mating behaviors, exchanging animals with other facilities and adjust the hours of daylight to their natural habitat in the wild; however, it was 2002 when we successfully saw reproduction. Breeding may be more difficult in the future, but we can continue to collect data which can help us understand the reproductive physiology by investigating the sex hormones which are found in sea otter feces.
We will continue to study sea otters in captivity so that we can help people to learn more about sea otter ecology and their difficult situation in captivity.

Day 29 - Niigata Reality
Heading out of the dorm, I received a LINE message saying that 3 of the people I am with are already near Tokyo Station. I ran to the station but my efforts were fruitless as I had to wait 5-7 more minutes for the train to arrive.
At the station, I bought two hotdog sandwiches and a bento to go while waiting for the Soshigaya group to meet up with me. Upon meeting them (Rhea, Taylor, and Alexis), we made our way to the platform leading to the Shinkansen and enjoyed the 2-hour long ride blazing through the cities and countryside. We passed by still-snowy mountains and expansive rice fields. I walked around the shinkansen and just took in the breathtaking view - but I relaxed a little too much as we missed our stop at Tsubemasanjyo station and instead dropped off to Niigata station. Turns out, I think it was a blessing in disguise since we managed to use this extra time to explore Niigata city more.
When we arrived, we adjusted our fare and headed to Bandai City Mall first since it was the closest place that was in our to-go list. Passing by seafood restaurants and interesting statues, the streets were much quieter than in Tokyo. When we arrived at the mall, they checked out the Ghibli store while I stayed outside looking for places to go to afterwards. The next stop turned out to be Pia Bandai, which was a fish market. There we browsed everything seafood related - from raw fish to cooked meals to omiyage treats. I bought a mixed selection of sushi for < Y1000 and ate it at a table outside. Additionally, we split cash to buy 48 pieces of milk and cookie treats. Once we finished chilling there we rode a taxi to Niigata Aquarium (a walk would’ve took us an hour).
The Aquarium entrance fee was a staggering Y1,500, but damn was it cool to see the marine life in well-kept aquariums. The coolest part for me was the cluster of sardine fish in this big aquarium full of different types of fish. There was also a dolphin show we managed to watch which provided us some entertainment. This place was probably one of my top spots in the whole trip. We headed by way of taxi to my final planned stop in Niigata - Befco Observatory Deck. In there, we went up to the 45th floor to see the spectacular (and free!) view of the city. There was also a restaurant there where I bought Salt Milk Ice Cream and ate my karaage and rice ball bento from Tokyo. I used their open-view restroom and we walked to the station, but not before visiting an Animate! first. There they stayed for a pretty long time, and since I wanted to use the restroom again, I managed to stumble to a peaceful little park (Higashi Park) five minutes away. There I chilled with myself and some Japanese dude tried to strike up a conversation but I had no Japanese skills sadly so that died out. After chilling for a bit too long I went back to Animate! and gathered up with the rest to run to the station so we won’t miss the train that comes every 40 minutes. Spoilers: we missed it.
We sat down at the platform and just chilled there until the next train came through. Once it did, I realized how farther and farther away we are going far from the bustle of a city. We arrived at Iwamuro station eventually, which was very simple and unmanned, and tried to find the bus station. Turns out we missed the bus that comes like thrice a day, so we walked about 5 kilometers in an hour in the dark of the countryside, with the loud croaking of frogs and the imposing darkness of the night. It was quite surreal and magical, for like the first 20 minutes. The rest of the time I listened to music in my phone and I am so grateful I brought my headphones along.
We managed to arrive at the hostel at around 8:30 PM. It was late but Taylor still wanted to go to the Onsen a bit of a hike away. I went out but decided to not go farther as it was raining. I stayed at the hostel just chilling, bought cup ramen at the front desk, and just chilled at the lobby browsing YouTube. It was a good break. After that, I gave my soup to the front desk (he said he wanted to drink it...) and headed to the 4-man room we rented. It had a similar vibe to a ryokan, with tatami beds laying in the floor and a pretty wooden interior. Once Taylor arrived from the onsen, we discussed our plans for the next day until it all seemed set and done. I took a bath in the shower and just chilled until 12:30 AM, when I rested and happily let temporary unconsciousness of sleep take over.

I'm very sorry to tell about this I tried searching baikal seal plushies on several Japanese sites like Yahoo Auctions or Mercari and I cannot find any so you have to buy it in person in the said aquarium in Japan. ...or try to make one for yourself or commission stuffed animal maker to do it
