AT THE END OF THE DAY, ITS THE PERSON WHO !
various ; bllk, kny, genshin
Tumblr media
listens whenever you're ranting about whatever. whether it's about your day, your current interests, or about a random dream that you had the night before. you can always count on them to stare dreamily into your eyes as they listen to you babble away.
REO MIKAGE, isagi yoichi, kurona ranze, tanjiro kamado, kanao tsuyuri, giyuu tomioka, OBANAI IGURO, neuvillette, albedo, zhongli, CHILDE, DEHYA,

you immediately side eye when in an awkward situation. who grins as soon as your eyes meet theirs, and suddenly you two are snickering and clamping your hands over your mouths. trying not to burst into a fit of giggles as everyone else in the room looks at you two in concern.
BACHIRA MEGURU, otoya eita, karasu tabito, SHIDOU RYUSEI, mitsuri kanroji, HU TAO, YOIMIYA, childe, FURINA, lyney, venti

uses your name/initials for their schoolwork. lazily resting their cheek on the palm of their hand as they scribble mindlessly at the assignment. doodling hearts around the letter as a small smile occasionally plays on their lips at the thought of you.

kisses you even when you're sick. pressing light pecks onto your forehead before placing a damp cloth onto your hot skin. they don't mind your weak murmurs of protests, that they'll catch the same sickness if they keep making contact with you. they don't mind, because they know you'll do the same for them.
chigiri hyoma, YUKIMIYA KENYU, reo mikage, shidou ryusei, hiori yo, SHINOBU KOCHO, MITSURI KANROJI, beidou

has your birthday as their most important passcodes. their phone screen, email accounts, even their bank pins. because they know it'll be easier to remember them that way.

silently sits on facetime with you, simply watching as you do whatever. getting yourself ready, studying for an upcoming test, or even just sleeping. they watch your every move, completely lovestruck and baffled at how a person could look so majestic whilst doing the simplest of tasks.

LIP GLOSS!
beach date headcanons
gender neutral reader
Tumblr media
ARYU JYUBEI!
checking out all of the stylish beach glam!
The beach holds a lot of risks for someone who wants to look in tiptop shape, but that isn’t deterring Aryu from a beautiful day out with you. He picks his outfits in advance, setting out patterned tropical shirts and matching pants, and he even puts his hair up and decorates it with shiny floral accessories. He’ll try to match with you and offer to help you dress yourself up, making sure you look just as glam as he does. Once at the beach, he’s eager to tan in the sun for a bit to show off his equally pretty swimsuit, and if time allows, he’ll even try to buy some souvenir clothes at the gift shop. You might be able to convince him to buy one of those obnoxious cringey tourist-bait t-shirts, but only if you promise to get one yourself to match with him and parade around the beach together like the keenly dressed couple you are!
“What do you think about this one?” You proudly hold up a big white t-shirt that has the phrase ‘SUNS OUT, GUNS OUT’ printed onto it in huge black letters. It’s garish and decorated with the most ugly emoji pictures known to man, which is why it caught your attention and precisely why you picked it out for Aryu to judge.
Your boyfriend swallows back a heavy sigh, rubbing his temples as if staring at your picks any longer would cause his brain to melt out of his ears. You had dragged him around the gift shops picking out the ugliest shirts you could find, each one growing worse than the last. Aryu shot down your offer to buy matching t-shirts with cartoon abs plastered onto the torso, so you thought you were toning things down.
“Are you really set on buying the most tacky thing you can get your hands on?” He asks, as if questioning you will change your determined will to wrestle your boyfriend into an embarrassing shirt. You nod eagerly, turning your attention back to the rack of horrible apparel next to you. Abandoning the white shirt you were just holding, you start rifling through it again.
“C’mon, it’ll be fun! Think about how jealous all of your friends will be! Even if it’s an awful souvenir, it’s not like they have a significant other that they can match with.” You grin at him with what Aryu can only describe as devilish intent as you bring out your next contender for him to judge. This time, it’s an all black t-shirt with the phrase ‘I GET BEACHES’ on it in bright yellow cartoonish print.
Aryu sighs again defeatedly. “...I suppose love and glam can go hand-in-hand. Very well. Pick whichever one you like. We can wear the shirts together, and perhaps everyone will see our natural stylishness shine even more from our affection for one another.”
Your grin widens even further, stretching quite literally from ear-to-ear. “Say less! I’ll pick out the best shirt you’ve ever seen!”
NANASE NIJIRO!
teaching him how to swim!
Nanase’s sunny attitude and courage often leads to him sticking himself headfirst into places he’s less-than-equipped for. You should have expected this: your endearing boyfriend making a beeline for the waves the moment you arrived at the beach, only to realize in horror that the boy has no clue how to swim and is being swept away as he flails his arms uselessly. After fishing him out and failing to get properly mad at him once you see his bright smile, you have no choice but to resort to teaching him the basics. Buying him a few floaties and kickboard ought to do the trick, and Nanase will entertain himself for hours bobbing around in the sea, looking more like a toddler in all of his swim gear than he does a soon-to-be professional soccer player. But, hey, at least he still looks adorable!
You tighten the floating around Nanase’s bicep, making sure the velcro strap is fastened on securely enough that no amount of waving, flailing, or splashing will cause it to come loose. Nanase waits patiently, and he stares up at you with his big eyes as drops of salty water drip from strands of his midnight black hair.
You pat his arm when you’re satisfied with your work. “Okay, that should be good! Jesus, you scared me really badly there… Why’d you go rushing into the water if you don’t know how to swim?”
“It looked fun! Everyone else was already in the water, and I was in there before I knew it! I couldn’t help it… Isn’t the whole point of going to a beach to have fun in the water?” Nanase asks innocently, and a hint of a boyish smile tugs at the corners of his lips. Even when he’s being scolded, he looks so pleased with himself that you have no choice but to forgive him almost automatically.
“Well… Yeah, but still…,” you sigh, shaking your head. “Just take it easy, and don’t go places where you can’t get yourself out of. These floaties should keep you from going under at least. Don’t go too far away, and stay close to me, okay? I’ll go in with you.”
His eyes light up, twinkling like stars when you mention that you’ll be accompanying him. “You’re going to come with….? Oh! Are you going to save me again if something bad happens?”
This boy…! You can’t tell if he actually has a brain in that head of his. What are you ever going to do with someone as airheaded as him? It’s like he lives and breathes just for your attention, and as much as you love him, it makes you wary of everything he does.
You reach over, and you grab his cheeks, pinching the soft flesh and stretching his face out as if it were made out of playdough. “Don’t go and get any stupid ideas! Purposefully drowning yourself so that I’ll rescue you is not an option, Nanase! Do you hear me?”
Nanase mumbles out the best he can with his cheeks being pinched, “Y-Yesshir…”
SHIDOU RYUSEI!
surfing!
Shidou loves moving to the beat of his own drum. He acts independently, plays independently, and defies the logic of anyone who tries to snare him within the strings of reasoning. Getting to go on a beach date with you means that he’s going to do whatever he wants. Be it teasing you in your swimsuit, downing a whole mountain of shaved ice, and then letting loose in the water, Shidou knows how to keep himself busy and does his best to drag you into his shenanigans as well. Whether or not it ends up with the two of you mastering the waves or play-fighting while drenching each other in seawater, Shidou will have you laughing and enjoying yourself with him by the end of the day. He has his charms, as insufferable as he might be, but you have to give him credit where credit is due.
“Hey-”
The sun blares in your eyes while you try to relax underneath the big beach umbrella you had lugged out to the sandy shore, taking refuge in the shade it creates as you forget the rest of the world. Or you would, had it not been for your insistent boyfriend constantly prodding at your arm.
“C’mon, quit ignoring me,” Shidou grumbles, puffing his cheeks out. You don’t know how he manages to keep up his energy even in the blazing beach heat, but when Shidou becomes fixated on something, he won’t stop until he sees it through. Unfortunately for you in this case, he’s determined to get you to join him and won’t let you rest until you will.
You groan dramatically, flopping like a pile of goop onto the beach towel underneath you. “It’s so hot! How does anyone have the energy to go surf in the sun like this?”
“The whole point of surfing is to cool off, idiot.” Shidou pokes you in the side of your head jokingly. He gestures to the waves a few feet away, the clear blue water glistening like diamonds underneath the unfiltered sunlight. “We try it out, we fall into the water, and we cool off. Solid plan, don’tcha think?”
You wonder if it’s worth biting back at him, to tell him to go do it on his own while you desperately try to cool off on your own, but if the wide grin on his face tells you anything, it’s that Shidou will drag you into the sea one way or another. It’s your choice whether or not you go willingly or have him carry you kicking and screaming, and you make the wise decision to peel yourself off of the ground.
“You’re not going to take no for an answer, aren’t you? I know you too well,” you pretend to sigh disappointedly, but your faux reluctance isn’t fooling anyone. Shidou gives a loud cheer and grabs your hands, leaving the two of you stumbling across the hot sand and towards the surfboards, ready to make a splash in the waves.
MICHAEL KAISER!
getting sunburnt and crying for your attention!
Kaiser loves trying to show off to impress you, only to turn around and end up flopping so bad that he looks pathetic instead. But that’s all part of his charm, isn’t it? Leave it to everyone’s (least) favorite German to buckle up for a romantic day at the beach, except he ends up getting burned by the sun to the point that he turns as red as a lobster. Lucky for him, you’re there to comfort him when he comes crying about how much it hurts and how he feels like he’s going to die unless you’re there to rub aloe vera onto his chest and back. It’s totally not because he wants you to feel his abs and toned back muscles, and he totally doesn’t need a kiss from you in order to heal as fast as he can! Maybe what he truly needs from you is a harsh glare from you and a freezing cold ice pack in order to put him back in his place.
“What are you going to do without me?” You sigh, shaking your head as you slather up your hands with a generous helping of soothingly cool aloe vera. Kaiser whimpers, laying on his stomach as his irritated red back provides proof to you that your handsome but stupid boyfriend got cooked to crisp in the sun.
He groans under his breath in relief when you spread the solution onto his sunburnt skin, his body practically melting underneath your fingertips. You bite back a coy smile; who could imagine an esteemed striker like him turning into needy putty the moment he needs your help?
“Darling, it’s like I’m falling in love with you all over again,” he whispers. He squirms underneath you, trying to guide your hands upwards his muscled back, clearly flexing his muscles to show off, and you roll your eyes. Smacking his shoulders gently, you take your hands off of him.
“I’m more than aware of how helpless you’d be if you didn’t have me.” You don’t want to admit that you’re equally in love with him, even though dating him feels more like being his white knight in shining armor than a proper lover at times. But when he cranes his neck to look up at you with such loving blue eyes and his signature grin, you can’t help but let your frown turn into a smile.
“But I do have you. Because you’re so madly in love with my charm, right? Because I’m that good-looking and talented, right?” Kaiser’s just fishing for your attention at this point to lift his spirits, and you lean forward to brush some of his hair out of his forehead.
You roll your eyes, and you kiss him quickly to get him to shut up. “Whatever helps you sleep at night, you doofus.”
Kaiser melts again, swooning visibly as he gazes deeply at your face. He bats his eyelashes up at you, his cheeks brightening into a tiny pink flush as he stares at you as if you were the most beautiful person ever in history. “You know… I’m sure I’d be instantly cured if you kissed my sunburn better… What do you think, darling?”
“Dream on, Kaiser.”

(DOVE OMG IDK IT SAID I UNFOLLOWED U but i think it was on accident or smth and lwky it was weird bc i didn’t see u on my dash lately :// i’m so sorry for that !!! i feel so bad i’m so sorry ;-; !!)
but i just saw that u were holding matchups, so i was wondering if i could provide a submission ? one for complete matchups, if possible <3
for blue lock, btw !
in a separate ask (thank u sm <3)
male, and around teenage years
sfw pls and thank u :))
i think i’m a v honest person, and i suppose i don’t mind saying what’s on my mind if i’m close to u. but to others, i filter what i say, and i tend to “people please” by saying what might be favourable to them. i’m really introverted and shy lol, it takes me a while to warm up to someone, but when i do, i’m pretty extroverted and loud :,) i think i’m also realistic, and i can sometimes be pessimistic, but i’m trying to be more hopeful about the future lately hehe. i feel like i’m also often trying to take care of my friends, and it’s like i’m the mother of the group ;-; and i would say that i’m quite empathetic, so a lot of the times, my friends do come to me for advice or just to hear some comforting words. i’m an infj :) and i’m a cancer ! i go by she/her !!
i like to write, read, and draw sometimes (not v good at it but it’s a calming activity imo). i also like to watch kdramas and anime <3 they’re probably one of my favourite things in the world !! and i like to cook (baking not so much idk why)—it’s also kinda therapeutic. i also love shopping, but specifically shopping for my things (idk how to feel ab grocery shopping :/)
ideal dates would probably have to be like art galleries, cafe dates, a picnic date w like painting activities hehe, a spontaneous trip out in the city, or a stay-at-home date where we just do wtv and enjoy each other’s company <33
thank u so so much ! hope that i included all necessary info, and pls (maybe) have fun w this !!
(i’m quite excited to do ur submission for my event too hehe <33 and so sorry ab the unfollowing I FEEL SO BAD </3)

with gentle features that seemingly express lots of emotion; no doubt, the two of you would be considered a visual couple and have countless onlookers wishing they were with either of you. nijiro only cares about your eyes, though. he's not bothered by the lovestruck stares and greedy thoughts the passing women have. he only needs to make you smile. that's his one and only goal.

⋆⋆⋆⠀ ⠀ PERSONALITY PAIRING ! congratulations . . .‧₊˚🍙✩YOICHI ISAGI₊˚⚽️⊹♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⋆⭒˚。⋆ chemistry analysis . . .
okay this actually was so easy for me to settle on, i literally read your personality info and the first person who came to mind was isagi. i weighed out all the other options, but no one else really clicked in my head other than him. i think about this man like so often; and knowing so much about him, there's no doubt that you two would be so compatible!
one thing that really stood out to me amidst all of isagi's personality traits, is his perceptiveness. obviously he's extremely good at reading the field, but his true talent is reading people. while you're very introverted and tend to keep to yourself at first, he'd be able to figure out a way to make you feel comfortable around him upon the first introduction. he wouldn't be alarmed by your shyness, but rather intrigued and he'd want to understand you better; in fact, he'd make it a challenge for himself to do so. immediately, he'd be able to notice the difference between you telling the truth and you trying to 'people please'— but no matter which one is occurring, he wouldn't call you out on it. he'd trust that you're saying and doing whatever you feel comfortable with, and respect that. he'd also enjoy your outgoingness once you finally open up to him, and his favorite thing in the world would be whenever he's able to make you laugh. isagi loves a girl who laughs a lot whilst showing a beautiful smile; and he'd wish he had a photographic memory just to revisit that look on your face when he's struggling on the field, in need of some comfort.
i don't necessarily think you two are total opposites, but there are definitely some things that you differ on; one being his optimism vs. your pessimism. isagi is someone who lives on adrenaline and keeping his head in the clouds. he believes that everything will work out for him so long as he continues to practice and find a new solution; however, he needs someone who can keep him grounded. if he spends too much time in the clouds, his feet will never come back to earth. with your realist perspective, you can tell him when he needs to focus or lock in on a goal— whilst also making sure that he isn't getting too ahead of himself. the reverse is also true. he uses his extreme optimism and drive to encourage you to take those chances that you normally wouldn't with your realism holding you back. he wants you to fly in the cloud with him, and looks forward to that safe landing he knows you'll bring. you keep him from flying away. he makes sure you're not stuck to the ground forever.
even though he's an optimist, isagi is so hard on himself. he beats himself up after every game even if he's the one who scored the winning goal. to him, there's nothing more important than improving; which is why your advice is so valuable. if anything, you'd surely be his rock in the midst of the chaos of his football career. he'd rely on you when he's feeling down and go to you whenever he needs some words of encouragement. with those words, he'd close his eyes and try to recall them— recite them— before he has a game (it's his good luck charm) and feel so much stronger. your the person he looks up to most. it's not noel noa. it's you. he hangs onto your every word, his attention is undivided, because he knows that you only want the best for him. your advice is selfless, and yes, maybe he is selfish for asking for it so often, but can you blame him? you're the shining sun when he's rained off the field and the sweeping waves when he visits the beach. your physical and emotional beauty astonish him.
on his off days, isagi loves to go for walks, read manga, or simply stay at home with you. surely, he'd be the one to hand you your sneakers and tell you that there's a new cafe open downtown that he wants to try— knowing full well that you've been looking forward to it for weeks. when the two of you are walking through the city, he's bound to take a few pictures with fans; and while you're holding up the phone telling them to say 'cheese', isagi smiles after, telling the strangers: "isn't my girlfriend so cute?" he's such a character. if you choose to spend the day at home, baking and such, he tries his best to help out in the kitchen. though, it never really works out as planned. isagi has his certain skills, baking not being one of them (i.e. soccer being the only one) which causes your sweets to be a little lopsided. however, his company isn't a burden as he makes you giggle and smile with his quips and encouragements as you try a new recipe. isagi loves spending time with you when he can, and he makes sure to make the most of it.

⋆⭒˚。⋆ a treasured moment . . .
your boyfriend is someone who thinks on his feet, pre-planning has never really been his thing, which is why it was no surprise when he laced up your sneakers and led you to the train station with no prior warning. "c'mon, that new cafe opened in ginza." is what he'd said to you; trying to sound spontaneous, even though he so obviously remembered you've been looking forward to it for months now.
the two of you are nearly there, just a few blocks away since you somehow got off the train two stops too early, when a pair of middle school (?) girls stop you in your tracks. "excuse me, do you mind if we get a photo with you isagi?" to which he gladly accepts.
naturally, you offer to take the photo, being used to your boyfriend's adoring fans and tell the girls to smile big. it's so adorable the way his face lights up whenever he's able to share his passion for football with someone new. you love that beaming look on his face and are so grateful that you get to look at that grin every day of your life.
"the girl taking the photo..." isagi begins to say to the fans, worrying you that he's about to make some joke that you won't find funny. "she's my girlfriend." aw.
they both nod at his words, commenting on how pretty they think you are, before he continues to speak.
"isn't she gorgeous?"
he always knows how to make you blush. damn him.
"you're a flirt, yoichi." you shake your head, giggling softly as you hand the phone back to the girls. "i can't take you anywhere, can i?"
he reaches out, lovingly clasping his large hand over yours and kisses your temple. it's a very public display of romance, but he made sure to cover your face while doing so, knowing that you tend to get a little embarrassed by those sort of things. "i'm the luckiest man in the world." his voice is so caring, so loving. "i'm going to tell everyone i'm yours whenever i get the chance."

Familiar: ? ??
Background:
“There is an unquenchable thirst for greatness within you, one that nobody but you can fulfill. Yet every quest for glory you took left you unsated, each gulp of victory were mouthfuls of fire. And there is only a matter of time until you burn to cinders from inside out.”
Born from one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the capital, Miharu grew up rarely wanting for anything. That is, until he became old enough to understand the sting of people’s words and venom hidden behind the sweetest smiles.
Was very attached to his second older sibling, used to idolize and adored them a lot until the pressure of being compared to them started to get to him. Miharu is ashamed to admit that his 2nd eldest was the reason he has an inferiority complex because while he loves his sibling, being known as the hardworking little brother of a natural born genius made him miserable.
As the youngest of four siblings all he’s been taught since young was not to bring any shame into family and that there are little to no expectations for him to live up to, no grand roles to fill in. For some people, being born with a silver spoon with no responsibilities or expectations would be a wonderful thing. But to him, it shows how insignificant he is as he’s not even worthy of being a spare for his older siblings.
Miharu is by no means an untalented or average khemia practitioner. By his own right, he’s worked hard to be where he is with or without the privilege his family’s influence gave him and he’s made a name for himself despite his age. But sure enough, the brilliance of the sun would easily devour the light that came from a handful of stars.
It was cowardly of him to run away to Cynefin in the guise of studying in Verum. Miharu needed to get away from Talcelin, from the eyes of the Capital’s high society, from his family and from his older sibling that he both loves and loathes the most.
Ignorant of the world yet remained headstrong, Miharu, the little young master who had never even dressed himself without a servant's help before settled in the quaint little town of Cynefin at the age of 18.
Trivias:
Has a lot of unsent letters addressed to his family. He might not like being sheltered under their shadow but they’re still his blood and he does get homesick occasionally.
Hates it when someone mentions his family’s wealth/influence or calls him a spoiled young master (and they were right to call him that. He brought his fancy schmancy automobile from the capital that he rarely uses ffs. "I'm not spoiled." he says. Meanwhile, the car in question: x)
Very hard on himself and self-critical. Has severe trust issues with people who approach him, worried they only get close to him to gain connection with his family that it’s hard for him to open up his heart for new friends.
Is fascinated with the way human bodies heal itself, hence why he picked elixirs as his major though there was another reason: because he wants to prove to his family that he’s a useful/crucial asset to the ongoing war.
Actually has more natural affinity towards the transmutation branch of khemia but stubbornly chose to specialize in elixirs out of spite so people would stop comparing him and his other sibling who is adept in transmutation.
Probably almost died when he foolishly tried to summon a demon to be his familiar but since it’s a successful summon he thought nothing of the danger he had put himself through.
Sleeps with a gun under his pillows loaded with silver bullets after learning the existence of demons (after summoning one, unsure if it will even do the demons any harm but hey worth a shot).

you found one of his journals and liked his neat handwritings along with the life-like sketches of plants and potions materials drawn in there. he isn't too happy with you when you returned it back to him though.
you found him chilling on a branch of a tall tree. the sun is going down soon but he doesn't seem like he has any intention to climb down. you have a suspicion that he's actually stuck up there and doesn't know how to climb down.

• though the wedding isn't real and only for show, it still felt like you were getting married to nijiro for real • upon receiving a letter from the producers that you would be his bride, a huge wave of excitement and happiness coursed through your veins • and so immediately the preparations for the wedding took place the following day • prior to the big day, you've never met nijiro to begin with • and it was because the producers were preventing you two from meeting each other • they only left little to subtle hints about their partners • and with the hints being given, you and nijiro were very much dying to get to know each other • and so on the day of the pre wedding photoshoot, you and nijiro finally met on set • with the cameras rolling, they caught everything from the looks on your faces to getting to know each other behind the set
How did you feel when you first met your wife?
Nijiro: From walking in and finally seeing her, it felt like a fairy tale. Does that really happen out of children's books?
How do you feel marrying alone in Japan?
Y/N: I'm far away from my friends and family and since they couldn't come due to our given situation, I couldn't invite them.
• when the wedding day arrives, it was only you, nijiro, the producer's and the cameras filming you two • but that wasn't all! nijiro especially planned something • taking out his phone before handing it to you, you were surprised to see your parents, siblings and friends in his screen
Mother: My Y/N is getting married..you look so pretty in white! I'm sorry that your father and I cannot be with you.
• it was safe to say that even nijiro is sweating buckets when he hears your mother's voice
Nijiro: Hello mother in law!
• the way nijiro greeted your mother was enough to have you and the producers laughing
Mother: Nijiro, I'm sending my congratulations to you and Y/N. I understand your feelings so please take care of Y/N preciously.
• since you're marrying in japan, of course nijiro still invited some guests • when the sun goes down, the people who arrived were: his father, kento yamazaki, aya asahina, dori sakurada and tao tsuchiya
Nijiro's Father: The first time I saw her? I've seen pictures of her, Nijiro sends me their pictures. And it seemed like she's got a nice personality and is opinionated now that I see her in person. She has a kind and innocent feeling too.
• after the wedding, you and nijiro lived in a house provided by the producers for a month and a half • though the marriage is only for show, you and nijiro experienced the domesticity of a husband and wife • decorating your home together • cooking your everyday meals together • nijiro showing you around the memorable spots of his childhood in and out of tokyo • comforting you on days wherein you don't feel okay • supporting and cheering for him when he's called to film for a drama or movie • there was never a dull day for the two of you within a month and a half of being married • but of course, all goods things come to an end • so on the last day of your marriage, the producers gave you two your final farewells • for nijiro, he took you to one of the many places he's never been to • simply because if he took you there, then it becomes a new memorable place for him • when the final farewells have been announced, you were the first to get up and leave nijiro behind • nijiro? everything happened so fast he couldn't process it yet • his mind and body were still enjoying and processing his marriage with you • he didn't mutter or say any word, just tears rolling down his cheeks • nijiro didn't take his wedding ring off, because why should he? • because the moment you walked away from him, nijiro misses you already

Translation: -
“Hold Your Breath” Interview – Awesome Mag
When you read the script, what kind of feeling did you have?
-       Even though each episode is only 30 minutes long, I was amazed that changes of the characters feelings were well depicted. Actually I’ve known, the director, Nakagawa Ryutaro, a long time, we’re really close but this is the first time working together. But, that’s why it was really interesting to be give a role like that this time.
How did you and director Nakagawa become friends?
-       That was so long ago I can’t remember. He had a very clear idea of ‘I want to make a piece of art like this’. He’s written many plots for me in the past. Only, all of them are epic works that cost a lot of money. (laughs). So, we haven’t been able to get to that point until now. Now, getting to work together for the first time, I’m really happy.
In this work you play Miyashita Shinpei, a part time worker moving from one place to another, currently working as a rubbish collector. What did you think of the character?
-       The director really knows me well. I thought Shinpei’s sarcastic and slightly subservient side is like mine. The drama doesn’t depict this, but the role of Shinpei has a backstory. He grew up in a town with a lot of delinquents around him, and he’s been in juvenile detention for hurting someone because of his sense of justice. In the drama there’s no word of that, but that’s why he’s so subservient. But he’s not a gloomy person, so he had a girlfriend. He’s not violent at all. Shinpei’s distance from society in general, I think he’s not that far from me? I thought that.
In just 30 minutes, I felt that the changes in the human heart were expressed well.
-       Yes, that’s right. In that short space of time, it’s great that’s where the focus is.
In this work you co-star with Adachi Yumi, how was it to work together?
-       I thought she was a very mature person. Even if our skin made physical contact, there was a certain distance between us.
At first glance, it seems that the two have nothing in common, but actually they are very similar in their loneliness and their need for humanity. I felt a tightness in my chest watching it.
-       The character Adachi-san played is facing conflicts that Shinpei doesn’t know about and Shinpei can’t understand her, and he also has his own conflicts, this relationship is very strange, isn’t it? But, when you watch, it opens up the imagination. I think that’s really good. By the way, for me, I’m not very good with feature length films.
If that’s so, this is a very suitable film!
-       It’s really great. I’m sure people will be able to watch in their spare time, I’d be happy if everyone could see it.
Well, now that you’ve depicted the world of the ‘Corona disaster’, Murakami-san, what kind of change of heart did this have on you?
-       Actually, I didn’t have much of a change of heart. Of course, I saw other actors around me starting to send out messages and make moves, and it’s not that I didn’t feel a sense of crisis. Instead, I’m the type who always has a sense of crisis. Not just at this time, Japan is also an earthquake country, I believe it can happen at any time.
During the STAY HOME period, what did you do?
-       I’ve only been watching foreign dramas. I thought I’d take the opportunity to read some plays and stuff, but no. (laughs). As expected, I had to stick with what fit for me.
Ahaha, but that’s the truth isn’t it?
-       I think so. Also, after the corona disaster, I wanted to make sure to put some care into what’s been difficult. Even if it’s useless to do so, I want to put in that time. That’s because, lately, I’ve been desperately focused on what is in front of me, I don’t feel like I’m looking far enough. And while there’s merit to this, only facing the task at hand has it’s disadvantages. Of course, that’s not wrong either.
You need to have an open mind*, you mean?
-       I think so. It’s gone a bit. I think that’s a very bad thing, so I want to be aware of that in my life.
Now, you’ve had the pleasure to work with director Nakagawa, is there anything you’d like to do in the future?
-       I’ve received many love letters from director Nakagawa. They’re on letterheads, and they’re full of my good points, and about what he wants to make. There are a lot of things that seem difficult to achieve, but if there’s a director who wants that much from me, I hope we can achieve this together.
(Additional question)
Common theme music column: A song to wake up to in the morning
-       Utada Hikaru: ‘Beautiful World’
-       I’ve never properly listened to Utada Hikaru before. But, when I watched the film ‘Shin Evangelion’ I was hooked. Since it’s newly written, it has a very strong world view of the film, but it’s a lovely song, it’s very good to listen to in the morning, I think.
/-/
*Translation note:  Here I struggled with the correct wording to use, and after receiving some advice, I’ve discovered the best way to describe this is more like ‘space/luxury to look ahead’, as in the time to pause allowed for some space to think.  I’ve kept ‘open mind’ in the wording here, but I think Nijiro’s answer makes more sense if you also take the full context into consideration.
[If you wish to use any of my translations, please ask!]

ISLE OF DOGS (2018)
Featuring the voices of Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton, Bob Balaban, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Kunichi Nomura, Akira Takayama, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Akira Ito, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, F. Murray Abraham, Yoko Ono, Tilda Swinton, Ken Watanabe, Mari Natsuki, Fisher Stevens, Nijiro Murakami, Liev Schreiber and Courtney B. Vance.
Screenplay by Wes Anderson.
Directed by Wes Anderson.
Distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures. 101 minutes. Rated PG-13.
The Ritz East was packed for the Tuesday preview of Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs. Quirky, symmetrical, ironic, detailed: Wes Anderson has a film style all his own and the fan following to match. I am one of those fans. Three summers ago, I dragged my daughter and sister on a wild goose chase through the streets of Milan, Italy in search of Wes Anderson’s bar. I stand behind my decision and my fandom more than ever after watching Isle of Dogs.
Following in the footsteps of Fantastic Mister Fox (2009), Anderson has returned to the world of stop motion animation for Isle of Dogs. Like any good Anderson film, there is a hero (Atari Kobayashi – a 12-year-old boy voiced by Koyu Rankin), a heroine (foreign exchange student Tracy Walker, voiced by Greta Gerwig), a villain (well, there are a few villains…see below), lots of detailed screen notes to follow (bring your good glasses!), and dry humor. As the movie title promises, this movie also includes dogs – lots of dogs – that must make the most of a bad situation on an island built on trash.
I was worried when I saw the original trailer for this film – worried about cultural appropriation; worried about white-washing. There are a number of critiques out on the web talking about this. I will leave the arguments and critiques to those more knowledgeable on the topic. What I can tell you, as an amateur reviewer, admitted fan girl, and citizen of the world who cares about cultures and human stories, the movie felt, to me, like a love letter to Japan and its culture.
The movie’s guidelines are set from the start. All human voices are spoken in their native tongue, with translation when appropriate by human translators or electronic written translation. All dog voices are in English. I loved hearing the Japanese language, and when not translated, loved the characters trying to figure out what the other was saying with body language and context, as so many of us know from our travel experiences. I loved hearing the drum-heavy soundtrack and seeing sumo wrestlers on the screen; watching the science-focused culture working to find a solution to the canine illnesses and the radical, worldly, young students rising up to protect what they love.
Most of all, Isle of Dogs is a love letter to pets and our relationship with our pets.
Villains Mayor Kobayashi (voiced by Kunichi Nomura) and the particularly evil Major Domo (voiced by Akira Takayama) are cat people in every respect and solidify their city’s cat society with the exile of the dogs, blaming their exile on dog flu and canine cough.
Okay, let me restate, Isle of Dogs is a love letter to dogs and the bonds formed through our relationship with our dogs. Atari represents every dog lover with the reciprocal, boundless affection that a 12-year-old boy and his dog have for one another. Anderson captures both the human and dog spirit in his characters interactions and dialogue.
Take the time to go see Isle of Dogs on the big screen – this level of animation detail and killer soundtrack should be appreciated on the big screen.
Now please excuse me while I go hug my dog....

Yamada Ryosuke x Murakami Nijiro x Kanichiro Crosstalk (Translation)
Popolo 2017.10 & An excerpt from TV Guide 2017.10
OK, this translation is more iffy than the others since I couldn’t find something to beta against.  There are a couple of spots I’m not too sure about, although, I don’t think it affected the context too much even if I got it wrong.  So, please let me know if you see any glaring errors. I bumped the scanned crosstalk in the post below.  I can’t remember where I got the scans from, but they are most likely from MoMozzz32 and/or 草莓要配白巧克力 on weibo.
<Kanichiro is also getting a lesson in how to post with chibis.>
"Big brother" Yamada and his cute little brothers' real talk!
"I will do this? This is my first experience!" Just like brothers.  The 3 buddies’ “Childhood friends” TALK
The "Childhood friends" trio  gather thoughtful feelings!
During the film, "letters" were used to connect the "feelings" of various people. This time, we arranged for a letter exchange to strengthen the bonds of this “reborn” trio.
✍️To Yamada-kun:
Let's "communicate" in the game! Let's talk!
From Kanichiro 🔝
Okay (laughs)!
By Ryosuke
✍️To Yamada-kun:
On set, Yamada-kun and Kanichiro-kun had been talking about games the whole time. I had not been able to join in for a long time (laughs). Recently I also got into game, so please put me in a group.
From Nijiro 🔝
Nijiro, you were always reading books (laughs). I'm very happy. Let's do it now!
By Ryosuke
✍️To Kanichiro:
I do not want Kan-chan to have a friction mark. To be dignified, there is only goodness in Kanichiro, I want you to keep that goodness forever!
From Ryosuke 🔝
I will keep it!
By Kanichiro
✍️To Nijiro:
Please act more childish (laughs). You are 20 years old but is unexpectedly like an adult. I want you to act more like a child (laughs)!
From Ryosuke 🔝
When Yamada-kun was twenty years old, weren’t you also like an adult (laughs)?
By Nijiro 🔝
Busted (laughs)!
By Ryosuke
The characters we played are just like ourselves
Yamada: Playing the role this time, difficulties were.…..non existent!
Murakami: Basically I am just like that. I felt like I can just get into the role [as myself].
Kanichiro: That's right.
Yamada: Kanichiro is just like the character of Kohei! You are very shy. Nijiro is not afraid of anything, just like Shota. I played Atsuya, and along with Shota and Kohei, we were able to keep the atmosphere between us intact within the film.
Murakami: Because Atsuya was like an older brother! Our relationship in real life felt like that as well. Obviously, I didn’t mean Yamada-kun is like Atsuya (laughs).
Kanichiro: Everyone was really suited to their respective roles. Although there were things I came across after I read the script, I wanted to try and play the role just as I was.  [We can] simply use [our] natural and friendly relationship [during filming].
Yamada: It didn’t feel like we had discussed and created this, right? We did have 3 days of rehearsal time.
Murakami: Oh yeah. Every morning, we gathered and rehearsed. That was the daily routine.
Yamada: While we cherished the “just as it is” atmosphere between the trio, it was our homework to make the "air" [between us] resemble people who grew up together; that we sounded natural and not like we were reading from the script, right?
Murakami: Although we weren’t told directly that we had to “work on the atmosphere between the trio”, there was an "atmosphere to create the atmosphere" (laughs).
Kanichiro: Surely (laughs). I was shy, so I thought I could not get to that place. But since Yamada-kun and Nijiro were able to do it, I was worried.
Yamada: So scary! Don’t worry about it (laughs).
Kanichiro: That's it (laughs).
Murakami: But in reality, there were only a few staff with us at the rehearsal. Even the manager was requested to go outside.
Yamada: It was such that we could concentrate. But you were like "are we doing all this?" (laughs).
Murakami * Kanichiro: (Laugh).
Yamada: Because I did not remember how far we went [in the script], there were a lot of “wait a moment” on location (laughs).
Murakami: All of a sudden, it felt like a rehearsal.  The concept of “script reading” had thus far been destroyed (laughs).
Yamada: In addition, although not much was shown in the movie, the director had also conceived the trio’s backstory.
Murakami: For us as well, we thought about our origins properly, right?
Kanichiro: Yeah. Even for those who will watch the movie, it may be interesting to think about the kind of persons these three guys are.
Murakami: You cannot think of us as just the bad guys. We have our own justification for what we did.
Yamada: I think it is also the charm of the work that the story connects more and more from there.
The great times the trio spent together in Oita
Yamada: In Tokyo, we were filming inside the grocery store, then in Oita, we were pretty much filming all the running scenes, right?
Murakami: It is true (laughs)!
Kanichiro: I don’t think I have physical strength, so I am not really good at running. So I thought I might annoy these two.
Yamada: That's it! I remembered that.  There was a video of Kanichiro sleeping soundly with his mouth open during breaks in filming (laughs).
Murakami: I was sound asleep for sure.
Yamada: When I saw that figure, I thought it was really Kohei (laughs).
Kanichiro: I did not notice!
Yamada: By the way, Nijiro also slept with his mouth open ... (laughs).
Murakami: My eyes were open too (laughs).
Yamada: Even during the off time, our camaraderie did not change.
Murakami: Kanichiro and I went out several times in Tokyo, but Yamada-kun was busy and could not go.
Kanichiro: So, for the first time since Oita, we are going out to eat together as a trio.
Yamada: While we were shooting in Oita, I went to eat with the team. Ono Machiko-san got this "older sister!" vibe, it was a great time.
Murakami: There was one time when Kanichiro and I went to eat at a soba restaurant, we bumped into Yamada-kun there by chance!
Yamada: Well I thought "That’s a familiar voice", and it were these two (laughs).
Kanichiro: The three of us ate soba together. It was very tasty!
The story’s key point is "Letter".  What letter [did you receive] that left a strong impression on you?
Yamada: Do you two get letters from your parents?
Murakami: I do occasionally. They are mostly from my mother. When I studied abroad, when I left home, when I worked, when I reach milestones of my life, etc. Because she has a lot to say (laughs).
Yamada: Do you write letters yourself?
Murakami: In Japan, people become adults when they are 20 years old, right? Well, I was 18 years old when I graduated from high school, and I felt like I [already] became a member of society. So on my 18th birthday, I did not wait for the first "congratulations" to arrive.  I sent an email saying “Thank you for giving birth to me"!
Kanichiro: That's nice.
Yamada: That's a good son!
Murakami: Only then (laughs). My father replied with a very simply "Congratulations”. From my mother, I got an incredibly long, poetic email. I got two emails, but basically it was my mother who sent me a letter.
Kanichiro: Me too.  I only received letters from my mother, I have not gotten many letters from other people.
Yamada * Murakami: That's right!
Kanichiro: My mother also has many things to say, and she sends me a letter every year for my birthday.  While they are filled with rather long sentences, the content almost does not change from year to year (laughs).  But I'm happy anyway.
Yamada: Do you have that letter?
Kanichiro: I think so!
Yamada: You respond like a comedian (laughs).
Kanichiro: ...... I think that it is somewhere in the room (laughs)!
Yamada: Of course I got letters from my parents too, but I also received a letter from Suzuki Kyoka-san, who played my mother in the drama "Risou no Musuko”.  It was addressed to "Son". I was very happy since the letter did not say "To Yamada-kun” but "To Son".
Murakami: That's amazing!
Yamada: Sometimes, when we occasionally met, she would go "Oh son~!".  At that time, I was about 18 years old and now I am 24 years old, and I am happy to see that she still sees me as “her son”.
Kanichiro: Is that so!
Yamada: So, I still feel like I am [her] son.  Because I got the letter when we cranked up, I have not yet been able to reply. I’d definitely reply to the letter if I have the chance.
Excerpt from TV Guide 10.2017
I am skipping the rest of this crosstalk since it is basically a rehash of the above.
If you write a letter ...
Yamada: "Nijiro turned 20 years old, let's go drinking." I'm not good at alcohol, right?
Murakami: I still don’t know the taste of alcohol. Therefore, I want to eat delicious food for the time being.
Yamada: That's cute. I guess I like yakitori.
Murakami: Well, I like yakiniku or yakitori. Then I would like to go to Yamada-kun's house.
Yamada: I wonder if we will talk about something bad (laughs).
Kanichiro: I want to talk about something bad. Talking about games.
Yamada: Games, I like very much.

Yamada Ryosuke x Gift
TV Guide Alpha Episode G (2017)
Thanks to weibo user 草莓要配白巧克力 for the clear scan.  I am paraphrasing parts of the article for better flow, so hopefully I don’t mess up anything.  I also looked at weibo user 你难道是个傻瓜吗’s translation as a reference when I wasn’t sure about a couple of points. Follow this link for her original translation.  https://m.weibo.cn/status/4139077831581416  Please let me know if you see any errors and I will update the article.  As with the other translations, I will include comments (snarky or serious) in the T/N and Asides.
Higashino Keigo’s bestselling novel, "The Miracles of the Namiya General Store", is adapted into a movie that will soon be released.  As letters travel beyond space and time to connect people [from different eras], a number of stories are weaved together through the eyes of the stunning cast. In the lead role is Hey! Say! JUMP’s Yamada Ryosuke. Till now, he frequently plays characters with distinctive traits, [but in here], he takes on the challenge of an everyday, regular youth, giving us a look at a nuanced performance as he enters a new arena in acting. The theme for this interview is Gifts = Gift. [T/N: A juxtaposition between gifts as in presents and gift as in talent.] Using the meaning of natural talents as a starting point, I want to take a look a close look at the heart of Yamada Ryosuke, one who possesses a unique star quality.
---- When you read the novel, what in this story attracted you the most?
"Although it is a fantasy, it is also trying to root itself in realism; it may be very peculiar if [this story really happened], but there is also nothing [out of place] if it did happen. I think the fine balancing act [between fantasy and reality] is quite interesting.  Humans are creatures who live with worries, although normally, I would not have thought of using a storekeeper as a counselor for said troubles, making this something fully in keeping with Higashino Keigo’s world.  Thankfully, through various TV programs and such, we (who appear in media) might be able to reach people [anonymously] and give them the courage to live on.  In that sense, perhaps we are like the storekeepers in the real world."
---- Atsuya (Yamada) is a young man with a sad past, but comparing to Yamada-san’s other works, it is a very realistic role.
"Until now, I am generally playing characters with distinctive traits in movies and dramas, but this time the role does not have a strong point of view [T/N: or characteristic]. Despite being in the lead role, it was important for me to pull back [and be subtle] in my acting. Although [my character in] "Assassination Classroom" was not flashy, he [still] had high assassination skills, but since Atsuya was an ordinary delinquent, I tried to switch to something that was completely different from my usual idol persona. As the lead, even though I did not consciously attach any special characteristics to my character, I did not have to worry because they would cut the scenes around me, so when we were shooting the “trio of childhood friends” scenes, I would just sleep or sit in the corner as I normally would."
[Aside: I'm not sure I translated the last part very well, but here's my take - he said he was trying to pull back and not be flashy, so he was not doing anything special to make Atsuya stand out, but at the same time, he was still technically the lead, so he should be worrying about these things normally. This time, he was letting the crew and camera decide on how and when to focus on him and instead worked on being realistic in his interpretation of his character.]
---- The scenes in the general store [where you were acting with your character’s] childhood friends, played by Murakami-san and Kanichiro-san, felt like something you see in a stage play.
"The scenes outside the general store were shot in Oita, while the indoor scenes were shot in Tokyo. The indoor set was rather dark, so it was easy to concentrate and gather my thoughts. Because we knew that the movie would be done for [T/N: kaput? finished?] if me, Nijiro, and Kanichiro [did not come across as genuine friends], we had 3 days to rehearse before crank in. Because we were able to work on our communications, even the shy Kanichiro was able to break the ice and we cranked-in in this atmosphere."
---- The interaction between the trio was very natural. How were you guys around each other on set?
"Our interaction [when the cameras were not rolling] was similar to the trio’s relationship in the movie. Not that I am boasting (laughs), I looked at them like two cute little brothers, and that feeling did not change very much whether we were on or off set.  The two would follow my lead, and knowing that, it was a very warm feeling.  Although Kanichiro was [understandably] nervous for his first movie role, I'm looking forward to seeing his growth [in future projects], and since Nijiro [had already] appeared in various works, he was a very plucky guy; he was cool and didn’t come across as a 19 year old (at the time). "
The higher the hurdle, the more excited I get
---- Please tell me your impressions on the acting of Nishida Toshiyuki-san, who played Yuuji, the storekeeper.
"It was not acting, or [I should say] it was like you were looking at the storekeeper himself. The feeling that “he had always been there” just came out naturally, I think [this quality] is something no one can copy. This time, I did not have a scene with him, but I had a chance to visit the set and watched the filming of one scene.  I wish I will be able to spend more time with Nishida-san someday."
---- I think that Atsuya was a character that needed to show a change towards the last scene. What was the approach you take for this shoot?
"Regarding the last scene, since the director told me that it was vital to the story, I worked hard to understand it; however, I also didn’t know how to keep the emotions alive to the end until I tried it out [on set]. Rather than being calculated, I just went with my instincts. According to the director, the last [scene] was where the various plots and characters connected, so he wanted me to take special care and I was prepared for it."
---- At that time, did you feel challenged or pressured?
"It was half and half. While there was pressure, it also made me want to do it more. If there was not even an ounce of pressure, I would not be able to do it, so I had fun [in this shoot]. Even though I thought I was pretty good at it [Aside: I think he was talking about crying?], but since the last scene was difficult, I was unable to do it well [initially]. The higher the hurdle, the better it was. Low hurdles were not fun (laughs). “I did it!” Don’t you want to feel this [sense of accomplishment]? I did not feel it when I was there, but [now that you are asking], if people say they [enjoy] the scene I worked hard on, I think I will be very happy."
---- The scene where Atsuya slapped [Shota and Kohei’s] butts, and it looked like the trio was ready to face the new day, was very good.
"When I was looking at their backs, I wanted to slap their butts. It was not written in the script. I ad-libbed it on the spot (laughs)."
---- Director Hiroki Ryuichi is a director who is forgiving for such improvised performances. How did you feel about your first project [with him]?
"He is a very interesting person. There is a huge difference between his “on” and “off” mode. When he was “off”, I could talk [to him about everything] from acting stories to random things. But when he was “on”, he did not talk very much and he was always watching the actors.  He didn’t give detailed directions, “Please perform freely”, “Please catch the ball that was thrown”, he was a guy who looked firmly at that. I don’t think he is someone who lets you get away with slacking off or taking a shortcut in a scene.”
[T/N: They really like to use baseball analogies. I am keeping these even though there are probably better phrases to use.]
---- Incidentally, does Yamada-san talk to someone about your troubles?
"I don’t have any particular problem at this moment and I rather be the one people consult anyway.  When you ask for my opinion, I will give you my thoughts straight up.  If you consult me, I don’t know if my comments will [be too honest that they] hurt though. So there's that [risk] (laughs). "
I want to join the group of actors who are shaping our era
---- Do you want me to do that [to you] when you consult me?
"No, I want you to be kind (laughs)."
---- Did you receive any particularly motivating advice so far?
"At that time, those words were memorable or encouraging, but then, I forget about them afterwards. You get different advice from different people, depending on your situation at the time. That's why the good words I heard in the past seem to be replaced by the new advice I got afterwards [when the circumstances change]."
[T/N: They were using “words” instead of advice in the original text. I know it is to emphasize the theme of the movie (words / letters), but it sounded a bit strange in English in some of the places.]
---- In this movie, will there be any good words that replaced the old?
"After Nishida-san saw the movie, some of the casts and staff held a launch party. Originally, Nishida-san was unable to come to dinner, but he came anyway and said, "After watching this movie, I can not go away alone. I want to talk with everyone." It was my first time seeing the other scenes and I wanted to talk with everyone as well, so we exchanged very pleasant words. For the actors, we performed in the movie with certain feelings, but perhaps for the viewers, this movie will allow them to be take some time to be introspective and reexamine themselves.  For me, the film definitely encouraged me to spend more time reflecting [on my views and actions], so I will be glad if this movie leads to someone's growth."
---- At the beginning [of this interview], you said "we are the storekeepers", but as you build your career, do you feel an increased awareness of how you [may be] encouraging someone?
"Since my job [as an idol] is to sell dreams, I am always careful about my day-to-day behavior.  [If you ask me] whether or not people will be saved by watching this movie, I still do not know.  I think that there are people somewhere who will see this movie, then [decide to] reexamine and renew themselves, and since my debut, I have a desire to work hard if someone can be helped by [my work]. As long as there are people who ask for it, I want to keep doing this until I die. For us humans, if people no longer [need you], that will be the end, especially for people like us.”
[Aside: All this talk about people being saved sounds a bit lofty. Please remember the story is about people facing life changing choices, people who have transgressed, people seeking redemption, and people getting second chances.  So “being saved” is discussed in the context of possibly helping people mentally or physically, and regardless of whether the problems they faced are big and small.]
---- It is also a movie where connections are strengthened by "words" written in a tool called “letters”.
"It is not a direct link but a story where people are connected with each other through invisible threads.  For us who were the senders of the letters, we wanted the recipients to take over and spin the threads [to continue the] story [from there].  Then, the thoughts of the recipients of our words and lyrics would come back to us again, so if we kept on [catching and receiving], we could help each other grow."
---- Now that the movie has been completed, what do you think is your strength as an actor?
"I have never thought about it .... But I think that [my range] has definitely expanded by appearing in this movie.  Until now, I had been involved in many live action adaptations of manga, so I think maybe my distinctive facial features and strong point of view are my strengths (laughs), but through this movie, I learned the importance of pulling back. Speaking of which, because Hayashi Kento-kun was very good in this film, I wonder if I am going to become such an actor as well. There are lots of young people who are shaping our era through their acting right now, and I want to be one of them too; that was what I thought about when I watched this movie.  I do not want to imitate anybody because that person has his or her strengths and I have mine, but I am envious of people who can play a lot of different roles. By sharpening my unique strengths and at the same time broadening my skills in other areas, I want to [someday] become someone people admire. "
---- What do you think is the talent = Gift that you were born with?
"Generally speaking, nobody is born with talents, right?  I think people get their skills through hard work and effort."
---- In "Sakurai Ariyoshi THE Yakai" (TBS series), Takizawa Hideaki-san gave the grand prize of Johnny's "Man with Extraordinary Talent" to Yamada-san.
"Well, Takizawa-kun picked me?  I don’t know that! When Takizawa-kun was holding his solo concert (2005), he picked me out of around 300 people to dance with him in the song “Andalusia”.  He even used the picture of us dancing together as the cover of the DVD.  I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that Takizawa-kun discovered me.  When I was still a [Johnny’s] Junior, I had a lot of chances to perform with Takizawa-kun on stage, and I felt that very much. I think he discovered me before Jonny-san did (laughs)."
Memorable presents that left an impression on you
---- I think that Yamada-san is a person with a lot of talents, and at the same time you have this image of being a hardworker.
"I do not know what people see when they look at me, but I do not know what talents I have and I cannot say that I excel in any particular thing.  Even though I don’t have any special talents, I am the type that like to work on achieving these skills.  I do not think it is hard work, I am just doing what I like. I act, sing, and dance because I like doing that.  Other than those, I am not particularly skillful in instruments, for example.  Because I am in Johnny’s, it is natural for me to be able to sing and dance. If you cannot do that, you can’t debut, so I have to keep up with [those skills] at all times.  It’s not a hobby but it’s a job, so if I want to stand out among the others, I have to work hard for it."
---- Because of your star quality, I wonder if you feel any difficulties with standing in the centre all the time?
"As far as the movie is concerned, when everyone comes out to the stage greetings, magazines [interviews], and televised events, I try to be dignified [to everyone].  Although as the lead actor, I cannot act without thinking, I do not think that "I am the leader" because everyone participated in the process of making the movie, even if my character drives the story.  Or I should say, I can not think that way."
---- When do you feel the [help] received from Hey!Say!JUMP members?
"I really appreciate the members. For example, if you have another job scheduled during the tour rehearsals, and you cannot go to rehearse? One of the others will remember the formation or choreography of the new songs and cover for the member who cannot be there, it’s just something we naturally do. In those instances, the person who has time to do that is a great help. Everyone will take the initiative, as will I. We don’t say it but when everybody works hard, we become good motivation for each, so we do not get tired of this.  This is how it has always been.”
---- As an actor, how do you feel about members’ increased activities?
"I am very interested. What kind of performances are everybody doing? So I will go and see what members are doing out there. Tomorrow, I planned to see "Shinobi no Kuni" where Chinen (Yuri) is [part of the cast]. I don’t usually talk to them about their work so much, but I always try to convey my impressions honestly after watching the movies and dramas."
---- What is the “Gift” that Yamada-san received from fans?
"I think it is everything.  Whether it is this position, this life as well, it is where it is now because of the fans.  For us who have fans, if anything, rather than being supportive, being supported is more comfortable.  It is ideal if we and the fans can continue support each other in future.”
---- What gifts did you receive recently that made you happy?
"On my birthday, a staff member of “The Miracles of the Namiya General Store" gave me a bottle of champagne with my name and happy birthday engraved on it. It was surprising since it was the first time I got something with my name on it, fashionable! (Laughs)  I was very happy.  But when can I drink it (laughs)? I guess we should drink it at the “Hit” prayer ceremony [T/N: What is ヒット祈願 in English?] on the opening day of "The Miracles of the Namiya General Store". Because my name is engraved on the bottle,  after I finish it, I will keep the bottle as a treasured memento. "
