Controversy
Many controversies have been created over the course of Nintendo’s lifetime so far. Some of the most notable are being accused of being anti-religion, including satanist propaganda, and attempting to influence children by releasing games that are not kid-friendly on their consoles.
One of Nintendo’s most popular franchises, Pokemon, has come under fire several times over the years for various concepts it seems to promote. One such incident is the removal of the game corners in new Pokemon games, a building where players could play fake slot machines to win coins and buy prizes. Many people believed this was encouraging children to take up gambling, and thus, the minigame was removed. The series has also been suggested to promote animal cruelty, in the act of capturing Pokemon and using them exclusively for battle. Notorious animal rights group, PETA, has even created several parody games highlighting in what ways the franchise could be promoting animal cruelty.
As Nintendo has branded itself as a family company, it’s often shocking for many people when they release a game with a mature rating. This is what happened when Bayonetta 2 was released as a Wii U exclusive in 2014. With a mature rating, the game feels like it shouldn’t belong on a Nintendo console. The game contains strong sexual themes and mature language, and features intense and bloody attack moves, which many deem is inappropriate for a game created by Nintendo.
