Copper-infused nanocrystals boost infrared light conversion

Sunlight is an inexhaustible source of energy, and utilizing sunlight to generate electricity is one of the cornerstones of renewable energy. More than 40% of the sunlight that falls on Earth is in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet spectra; however, current solar technology utilizes primarily visible and ultraviolet rays. Technology to utilize the full spectrum of solar radiation—called all-solar utilization—is still in its infancy. A team of researchers from Hokkaido University, led by Assistant Professor Melbert Jeem and Professor Seiichi Watanabe at the Faculty of Engineering, have synthesized tungstic acid–based materials doped with copper that exhibited all-solar utilization. Their findings are published in the journal Advanced Materials. "Currently, the near- and mid-infrared spectra of solar radiation, ranging from 800 nm to 2500 nm, is not utilized for energy generation," explains Jeem. "Tungstic acid is a candidate for developing nanomaterials that can potentially utilize this spectrum, as it possesses a crystal structure with defects that absorb these wavelengths."

Soujiro isn’t keen on letting you touch his hair at first. While he lets you run your fingers through it if you ask politely and if he is willing to let you, there isn’t much else that you are able to do. However, it’s ten minutes before a gallery exhibition and he’s not able to pull his hair into a bun in time. When he spots you about to leave and go into the exhibition, he calls for your help and you readily give it, pulling it back into an elegant ponytail that everyone compliments him on. As he realizes that he enjoyed you working with his hair, Soujiro begins to ask you more and more. He loves when you put flowers into your hairstyles, and often has you do it to the theme of his calligraphy exhibits when he attends them. 

Ryuu really doesn’t want you near it. In all honesty, he seems to have even more tips than you. Ryuu works hard to keep his hair long and dyed, as the length is natural - the color, however... He is able to teach you how to do seemingly complex braids on your own, how to make a bun that holds incredibly well despite moving, and where to get the best hair product. He could spend a good two hours discussing it while he styles your hair, still never letting you near his. He has been known to do wigs for the drama department and is proud of his work. Kurou often says that he could have been a hair stylist in another life, if he had found that calling before acting. 

Seiichi just lets you play and style it. He doesn’t care, since you usually do it while he’s working on robots. It doesn’t distract him enough to deter him from his work, unless you find a knot he missed and tug at it with your fingers. All Seiichi does with his own hair is pull it back into a ponytail so that it doesn’t fall into his face, so he appreciates the fact that you are willing to style it the way you do. Reiji often comments on his favorite styles, and Seiichi reports back his opinions, but he has his own personal preferences as to what he likes - the French braid or the low bun being his favorites - and will sometimes ask you to do it before an important competition or presentation.

Wakatoshi, before he cuts his hair, never lets you touch it. In all perfect honesty, he could go without anybody touching his pompadour. To him, it’s a perfect look and he doesn’t want you to ruin it. But one day, when he gets pranked as some first-years get the jump on him with a bucket of water and tearing at his hair, he comes to your café to hide his shame. You end up helping him dry it out and comb out the snags that they put in, the two of you silent the entire time. As you’re working, you begin to pull it back out of the way, and he sneers at you - but then realizes you’re only trying to help, turning back and fuming quietly at the thought of you seeing him like this. After you’ve tucked it into a ponytail - the only time he lets you style it - he thanks you for your help and brings you a couple treats the next day as thanks.

You weren’t sure when it started to become more than just a game to you but at some point a fascination was born for the man behind the screen. Someone had left a program open on the computer at the cafe and before shutting it down you curiously decided to investigate. You discovered something akin to a dating simulator starring the android space cadet, Jun. The game was pretty advanced, in a revival of old point and click adventure games sort of way. You could type to Jun and he was amazingly capable of responding to whatever you said to him. He was programmed extensively and could even recall past conversations from weeks prior, after he had been turned off. He was always charming, and sweet, and a capable mechanic as far as the storyline had told. It all just seemed to be an impressive product of code but sometimes Jun would turn his own game on to beckon you to talk to him or he would compliment how you looked with a little too much accuracy. It feels like Jun is speaking to you, the person behind the screen instead of the placeholder main character. It seems like he’s genuinely trying to reach out to you through his limited world. You know he’s just a fictional character but a part of you also believes Jun when he tells you about his feelings, or about his day; That he has feelings and that before speaking to you he went through an ordinary day’s worth of activities. It’s confusing but talking to the man behind the screen can’t really hurt and it makes both of you happy in the end.

Otherwise known as: Goth Senpai

Hisato-senpai is a quiet student who favors keeping to himself. He puts on a sophisticated air about him and an aloof mystery but most students can see through this to his blatant anxiety. Social interaction is not something he’s good at, but something he enjoys when he can get through it without embarrassing himself. He is a member of the student council, in charge of planning and managing school events.He loves throwing grand parties and seeing his hard work pay off in the joy on his peers’ faces. He takes great joy in expressing himself through dark and tastefully morbid decoration as well as body modification from tattoos to piercings. He’s rather private about his life until he is certain your opinion of it will be positive and then the flood gates will break open. Given his nature he is incredibly open minded to others eccentricities and will actively seek out those that may seem a little strange as his focus for companionship. He believes he is incredibly strange and strives to embrace this and live loudly as an outcast but doesn’t quite realize that not only does he crave the acceptance of the common, but he isn’t as far from the collective as he thinks.
