Regarding your question, apologies for the long shit incoming in advance, I'll probably share way more than what's needed, but anyway:

OK, to be honest, I should mention that I'm used to long-distance in most of the relationships in my life anyway, so that's kinda my bread and butter. I was bullied in my small town schools and later I went on to study foreign languages, so all of that created circumstances that made it natural for me to create real friendships mostly with people online or in foreign countries. I've always been more of a "next country rather than nextdoor" type of person to begin with, and my partner was no exception I guess.

We got to know each other online, so we were sort of used to the bulk of our relationship being online when we decided to be in a QPR. It was my partner's suggestion before we even got to meet IRL, and to be honest I'd never had a romantic or queerplatonic partner before and didn't fully grasp what it meant at the time, but it sounded nice, so I went for it! We met up IRL in 2018, a couple months after that (I was meeting up IRL for the first time with another friend who also happened to live in the area, in retrospect I really appreciate everyone's patience as I imposed a double visit and splitting my time in two between them TwT) and at that time it only cemented how much of a vibe it was.

After that, I was saving to visit them again in 2020, but... Y'know, the shit happened. The US (where my partner lives) enforced a travel ban on my country and several others that lasted until November 2021. It was incredibly hard during those times. We called very often, but since I'd been all riled up on the idea of hugging them again, and I was very affection-deprived because no one was allowed to see anyone or touch anyone (and that was pretty heavily monitored by cops for quite a while in my country), it wasn't enough for me to feel OK. The only way one could travel from a banned coutry to the US was to stay 14 days in a non-banned country and then travel from there – which I ended up doing in mid-2021 because I was basically going nuts. It was pretty damn expensive, but since nothing had been allowed for a while it's not like I'd spent my money on much, so I had savings, and I needed to prove myself that I could do it. We reunited IRL then for a good week. Then, because they'd fairly recently got a job (which meant more income for travel) and because US citizens WERE allowed to travel to banned countries, THEY visited me in September 2021 (and we formally promised to marry each other someday then, so even travel bans couldn't separate us in the future).

Despite all that, come late October 2021 and with no end in sight for the travel ban, I'd completely spiralled into despair over our future again. The travel ban and other restrictions made seeing each other so much harder and it was seriously taking a toll. Despite everything we'd managed that year, at that time, it felt so hard I was having serious self-endangering thoughts for the first time in my life, and I wanted to give up. That lasted about a couple days until I talked about it to them over videocall and heard their words of support and saw their face and got all angry like "fuck no, they can't take that away from me". So, because they're who they are, and because of extra support from some friends which meant a lot, despite everything, we didn't give up.

Now I'm free to travel to them again so honestly? Maintaining a long-distance relationship feels really easy right now. We text every day, videocall at least once a week and send each other care packages with gifts for our birthdays, holidays and special occasions. (Our time zone difference is 9 hours, which is convenient, cus when I wake up they're more or less about to go to bed so we can chat for a bit, when my workday is over theirs hasn't started yet, and when they're having lunch I'm having dinner, so we often share meals and watch stuff together over video calls.) We're both working adults with a stable source of income, which definitely plays into a lot, cus that means we're much more free to save up and make plans to visit each other – and by god ever since 2021 we've been making much more frequent plans, as of today we have 3 meetups more or less planned, one of them coming up this month actually, so that's pretty great^^

I do live in fear of another travel ban coming out of nowhere, so I do hope we can marry someday – though that'll be its own whole can of worms in terms of coming-out and immigration hardships, but we're determined to work through it. We're determined not to be long-distance forever. Kinda sucks that we have to go through something as amatonormative as marriage to achieve that, but also, ehh, y'know what, if that means someday I get to hang out with them in person everyday, it ain't that bad. It's a means to an end. And I guess it's a cute idea in a way.

...Welp that was way too long. tl;dr it's not easy every day. Some circumstances out of your control can really put you through the ringer sometimes. But on the flip side that means you get out of it stronger and the whole thing's kind of a virtuous circle. The more you fight for it, the more precious it is to you, and the more precious it gets to you, the more you want to fight for it. Kinda comes naturally to me at this point, so, I guess, don't make it a chore. It never felt like one to me. It's all a treasure if anything.

Hello and thank you for asking! Why yes, there was in fact one special thing that started it all and that was a hate comment on someone else's fic that said something to the effect of "HANK IS NOT A SEXY LUMBERJACK HE IS A JOLLY SANTA CLAUS!!!" which, naturally, my immediate thought was "why not both?"

This was in like, March of 2021 so I was like "I have 9 months, I am the slowest writer in the world but I bet I can write a lil somethin where Hank is a mall santa by Christmas" and then promptly forgot about it until mid-November. However, it was originally supposed to just be a oneshot forklift sex fic so I went for it. Once I wrote the opening lines, though, I had to figure out how to get Connor from that state to experiencing the most intense OSHA violation of his life, so obviously it expanded into what is today.

Why forklift sex? Well, believe it or not I do not have a Santa kink, so I had to figure out some way to make it interesting because the typical Santa Baby thing just wasn't doing it for me. As you correctly guessed, I used to work retail and did so for over a decade, so I wanted Connor to work retail logistics just like I did. Working retail is hard and thankless, so I figured. You know. If he doesn't have the means to quit, he should at least get to nut all over the forklift. It's only fair.

But yes, other than the forklift sex itself (TO MY KNOWLEDGE nobody ever had sex in the stockroom) and the fact that my store never had a mall santa, the fic is very heavily informed by my time in retail. There is an unfortunate amount of human piss to clean up. Customers sexually harass you and throw things at you and sign up for the rewards program at the least convenient times. Mariah Carey plays once every 20 minutes starting in October. But, like Connor, I did meet the love of my life there, and I wrote this story because of it, so. Everything was worth it 💖

I finally put my finger on why a lot of adaptations and retellings of The Secret Garden feel thematically off to me.

So many of these interpret it as a story about healing from grief and loss. Which is very true of Mr. Craven’s subplot, but not for Mary and Colin.

It’s about healing from emotional neglect.

This is mirrored in the neglected garden and how the children’s restoring it--giving it the love and care and attention that they themselves have lacked--heals them in turn. Forming emotional connections is the first step in Mary’s recovery, and the Sowerbys are crucial to the plot because they’re the first people Mary has known who take an interest in her emotional well-being. Colin meanwhile has his turning point when Mary confronts the root of the emotions he’s never been able to address to anyone. These are very different issues from those surrounding loss of a loved one. In fact, these children are the way they are because they’ve never had loved ones.

So to rewrite the story as centrally a tale of overcoming grief recontextualizes everything about the protagonists, and the characterization either makes less sense or needs to be altered accordingly.

Nothing wrong with stories about overcoming grief, of course. That’s just not the story Burnett was telling, and I’m not sure where the shift in interpretation comes from, or why it’s so prevalent.

We’ve finally arrived at an infamous line from Dracula, and I’d like to share some thoughts before anyone (like many, many critics before them) reads too much into Lucy’s comment about her three suitors.

From what we’ve seen (and will continue to see...I’m going to refer to some things that haven’t happened yet), Lucy’s intelligence is primarily interpersonal. She reads others’ mental states well, she’s strongly empathetic, feels things more acutely than others, and speaks out against what she sees as insensitivity. She has an interesting blend of demonstrativeness and reticence. Although she expresses her emotions readily when writing to her friend and when turning down Seward’s and Morris’s proposals, the way she declares to Mina, “There, that does me good,” after confessing her love for Arthur and thanks Mina for allowing her to be “able to tell you and to have your sympathy” suggests relief at being able to express something held back. She admittedly tries to be “a tough nut to crack” in front of Seward and is reluctant to give even Mina the full details of Arthur’s proposal. As much relief as she finds in emotional openness, she also seems to need to self-censor.

The reason lies in the keynote of her character: her need to please other people. One literary critic I’ve encountered has criticized her for apparently having no life beyond her mother and suitors. Lucy’s suitors do indeed take up a lot of her letters’ content, but before these letters comes a request from Mina: “Tell me all of the news when you write. You have not told me anything for a long time. I hear rumours, and especially of a tall, handsome, curly-haired man???” Lucy obligingly gives her friend the information she knows her to be most interested in hearing. As she tells Mina, “I have nothing to tell you. There is really nothing to interest you” (emphasis added). What we know of Lucy so far is only what she believes is relevant to Mina’s interests.

While she does love Arthur greatly, it's telling that the first thing she tells Mina about him is “he and mamma get on very well together; they have so many things to talk about in common.” Presumably he and Lucy relate to each other too, but her primary concern is her mother’s approval of her love interest. Once engaged to Arthur, she is careful to tailor herself to his preferences.  Likewise, she filters her emotions through the need to please; she admits she’s “very, very happy” at her engagement but considers herself undeserving and vows to “try in the future to show that I am not ungrateful.” Even while struggling with some incredibly traumatizing things herself, she shows concern for Mina’s anxieties about Jonathan and tries to console her. Later, we’ll see that her letters to Mina and her personal diary present very different pictures of her state; she glosses over her own pain to keep her friend from worrying. She similarly tries to “cheer up” to keep Arthur from being “miserable to see me so” and downplays her problems for the sake of her ailing mother. Even her private diary’s last entry ends not with a comment for her own benefit but an address to others: “Thank everybody for being so good to me! Thank God! Good-night, Arthur” It is as if she struggles to conceive of an identity for herself beyond her relation to others.

Given Lucy’s family situation, it makes sense that she would grow up with this mindset. As the only daughter of a widow, she is her mother’s only immediate family, and pressure seems to be placed on her in this relationship. Her mother expects her to marry, and Lucy does so, with attention to which suitor her mother gets along with. Her mother’s will even leaves “the whole estate, real and personal” to Arthur, requiring that Lucy marry him if she is to have any inheritance. Lucy seems reluctant to be open with her mother, judging from her relief at being able to confide in Mina, and her insistence on concealing her increasing struggles from her mother. Although the delicate state of Mrs. Westenra’s health is ostensibly kept from Lucy, she is implied to be aware that her mother is not well and feels responsible for her health and well-being.

This quality places Lucy’s conduct toward her suitors in a new light. Her remark “Why can’t they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble?” is commonly interpreted by critics as voracious desire for as many men as possible. Lucy’s rhetorical question is indeed unorthodox, as she acknowledges, and viewed in isolation, it does appear to support a reading of an over-sexualized Lucy. However, placed back into context, it becomes more consistent with her desire to please than any unusual lust. 

Lucy begins her account to Mina of the proposals with mixed feelings: “Just fancy! THREE proposals in one day! Isn’t it awful! I feel sorry, really and truly sorry for two of the poor fellows. Oh, Mina, I am so happy that I don’t know what to do with myself. And three proposals!” She is clearly flattered by the validation of attracting three men, but her happiness, as indicated later in the letter, refers to her engagement to Arthur more than to exultation at multiple conquests.

Her intermixed sorrow is not on her own account but on the behalf of the men she must reject. She shows no self-pity. Her empathetic nature takes on the emotions of her suitors in addition to her own; as she tells Mina, “it isn’t a happy thing when you have to see a poor fellow, whom you know loves you honestly, going away and looking all broken-hearted, and to know that, no matter what he may say at the moment, you are passing quite out of his life.” So she feels “so miserable, though […] so happy.” After Quincey Morris’s proposal, she is overwhelmed with guilt for “almost making fun of this great-hearted, true gentleman” as she turns him down. This deep regret at having to disappoint another good, worthy person leads her to bring up marrying multiple men as a means to “save all this trouble” of the rejected ones’ pain and her own sorrow at not being about to please everyone.

Therefore, the emphasis in Lucy’s infamous line is not lust but her own sensitivity to others’ emotional pain. Once she is engaged to Arthur, she shows no sign of wanting the other two back or seeking them out in any way. This is not the behavior of a woman driven by desire for multiple partners. Choosing Arthur pleases her mother and herself, but for someone as committed to taking responsibility for everyone’s happiness as Lucy, a solution that does not satisfy all parties can be difficult to take.

Take chances! Make mistakes! And get messy!

Nozomi’s dream is to become a teacher, and here’s her chance to prove she’s got what it takes. Is she smarter than two fifth graders?

The Plot

Nozomi and Rin are at school, admiring Coco’s teaching ability. During lunch, Rin wishes he’d teach her siblings. Nozomi eagerly volunteers in his stead.

Syrup doesn’t think she can do it, while Coco disagrees, causing Syrup to get upset and accuse him of being all talk before storming off. Coco gets a sad look on his face that only Nozomi notices.

After the opening, Bunbee complains to a mysterious person in a chair about how much his job sucks. When Bunbee realizes he’s the Director, he grovels and runs.

Nozomi works with Yuu and Ai (Rin’s siblings) to help them understand their homework in an approachable way. She decides to plant a sunflower seed to help them determine what a sunflower sprout looks like, which is pushing Ms. Frizzle levels of above and beyond.

The children have children questions like “why do we have to study” that she’s hard-pressed to answer, but she earns their respect regardless.

Once again, Syrup mocks Nozomi for trying so hard, Coco defends her, and then Syrup blows up on him for not being around or helpful when he was needed. Then he flies out of the room in a puff.

Later, Coco helps Nozomi plant the seed and she cheers him up.

Bunbee appears, muttering about how he needs to impress after his flub-up earlier, and turns the sunflower seed into a Hoshiina.

Nozomi, Urara, and Kurumi transform, but while the two cures take on the monster, Rose protects Coco and Nuts from Bunbee.

Dream doesn’t want to destroy the sunflower since it’s being used for learning, so Lemonade restrains it and Dream tries to pull the Hoshiina orb out, but gets knocked away.

Bunbee manages to blast the Rose Pact away from the fairies and the Hoshiina catches it in its bulb and clamps up.

The team seems to be at the end of their rope when Syrup flies in with Rouge, Mint, and Aqua in tow to save the day.

Dream tells Rouge to shoot her Fire Strike in the sky, and Rin trusts her friend. It turns out this acts as a makeshift sun, and the Hoshiina turns towards it and opens its flower, dropping the Rose Pact.

Dream performs a Shooting Star and kicks the Hoshiina’s face off, destroying it without harming the sunflower seed at its core. Bunbee flees.

Nozomi explains later that she studied up on flowers so she could help Yuu and Ai and that’s how she knew what to do.

As if on cue, the twins appear and give Nozomi a journal to track the plant’s growth. In return she gives them an answer to why they have to study: She explains that knowledge fosters curiosity which leads to more learning and growth, and eventually finding a dream to follow.

Seeing how she interacts with the kids, Syrup finally admits that she might be cut out to be a teacher after all.

After everyone has gone home, Coco observes the Rose Pact and compliments Nozomi’s ability to bring out the best in others. Then it turns into lamenting his own inability to help, as he thinks maybe Syrup was right. Nuts tries to encourage him but he’s not in the mood for it, and declares himself unworthy of being a king.

Just as Kurumi walks in, the Rose Pact begins to glow and then out comes… an ugly lump of metal that the three recognize as Palmier Kingdom’s crown.

The Analysis

What I liked

Getting to see Nozomi try her hand at teaching was fun. She didn’t have a lot of material to cover, but she worked hard to make sure that Yuu and Ai actually understood the lessons, and came out of it with an appreciation for learning.

Once again, the bond between Nozomi and Rin is delightful. Rin may not always know what Nozomi is thinking, but she fully trusts her friend and is willing to go along with her plans. This is seen both in her willingness to let Nozomi tutor her siblings, and later in battle when Dream tells her to fire her attack at the sky. Both times, Rin looks Nozomi right in the eye to confirm what she has said, and agrees to do whatever she asks.

Dream’s plan to make the Hoshiina let go of the Rose Pact was legitimately inspired and I tip my hat to the writer that came up with that. Also, this shot is gorgeous.

Bunbee’s scene at the beginning where he unknowingly complains to the Director was great. You could see where it was going right away and never once did he stop to think that maybe he should find out who this person is. He was, at least, smart enough to know he was in trouble once he learned the truth, and got himself out of that predicament quickly.

The ending scene was very welcome. Coco finally acknowledging that maybe he isn’t suited for the role of King yet, and regretting his perceived inability to help the cures out more, is good stuff. Whether or not it’s true, and whether or not it was valid for Syrup to be so mean to him about it, remains to be seen, but just seeing him question his worth is gold. And then for him to be granted the crown of the Palmier Kingdom, all crushed and smooshed up, is a good symbol of his monarchy as he sees it.

Sunset scenes are gorgeous as always.

What I didn’t like

Our old favorite Kawano Hiroyuki is in charge of animation again, so the art is kind of off in some places. Stiff faces, awkward grins, and eyes too wide apart abound. He most recently worked on episodes 7 and 15 of this series.

We didn’t get to see enough of Nozomi tutoring the twins, she only addressed 2 or 3 questions. Additionally, when they ask the fairly reasonable question about whether it’s okay to wait for a sunflower to sprout to answer a question on their homework that’s due tomorrow, she brushes it off and says the teacher will probably let them wait. I know what they’re going for, but the truth is that there’s probably pictures in a textbook they have available which they can use as a reference.

Syrup seems especially hostile. It may be in service of the narrative, and leading into our mid-season climax the next two episodes, but it was still a bit of a surprise given that he’s grown to put up with Coco. They still haven’t explained what happened between them, so we’ll have to wait until the next episode for that.

Miscellaneous

Milk does not appear in her fairy form at all in this episode.

Yuu and Ai’s names appear to be derived from “you and I”. I’m not sure why. Their first appearance was in episode 13 of the first show. As far as I can tell from skimming my reviews, it was also their last appearance.

Coco and Syrup’s conflict will lead right into the mid-season climax.

Conclusion

This was a pretty good episode. It furthers Nozomi’s dream, which is always a plus, and shows her strength in her ability to guide others. It’s got some good character interactions between Nozomi, Rin, Coco, and Syrup that exemplify everyone’s character, or their inner conflicts, which will be explored in the coming episodes. I thought it was a little heavy on the moralizing (yes I know what show this is) but it didn’t hurt my enjoyment.

Next time, Syrup betrays everyone! Look forward to it!

it’s very telling to me that when gun wants to twist the knife when he’s abusing vegas, he goes for belittling vegas’ nurturing side. saying ‘you and macau aren’t fit to be my sons’ is a way of tearing down all the years vegas has spent trying to keep his brother safe and loved and far enough away from the mafia lifestyle that he doesn’t have to run the risk of becoming the same heartless weapon that vegas is. (and it works because later, when pete points out that vegas still has macau, vegas just says that macau is the same. they’re both trapped on the same sinking ship with no hope of rescue.) slapping the food out of his hands and following it with a comment about how vegas is just as stupid as his mother is directly reinforcing that vegas’ worth as a person isn’t in this caretaking realm. he wasn’t raised to be soft and kind, he was raised to kill and maim and destroy. why is he wasting his time trying to be gentle or look after others? there isn’t room for that. he’s vegas from the minor family and he needs to start acting like it — he needs to be the armor, the shell, the monstrous underworld figure — and he needs to abandon the vulnerable human core underneath.

and it’s equally telling that even though vegas’ entire life is lived in service to his father and trying to find a way to impress him, he still doesn’t give up that innate desire to feed and care for and look after the people he loves. for all the abuse gun puts him through and for all the horrible things vegas does, he still never escapes or abandons that.

We watched the whole of the Detective Conan anime for the first time starting in 2018, so we're relative newcomers to such a long-running series. But we got into it. After we watched all of it up to its current point, we decided to go back and rewatch it from the beginning, and, while rewatching it, we've been taking some notes episode by episode. We wrote these notes primarily for ourselves, but we think they're pretty nice episode reviews, and when we reread them, we'd like to do so in full formatted glory, so we thought they'd be fun to share on Staircase Spirit.

We’ll be dividing these into smaller chunks because we’re not about to review 1000+ episodes all at once and in the same page. And before anyone thinks, what kind of endeavor are you saddling yourselves with, stop before it’s too late... actually, we’ve written everything up to episode 150 already, and we’ll be polishing these reviews and releasing them bit by bit over time. So, uh, meeting my boss’s wife got me thinking back to my old manager. Both found veganism like the light in the dark, religious-like. That got me thinking about the vocal vegans I came across in my life and there seems to be a common thread between them that always rubbed me wrong. 

The issue I have with some  militant vegans is that they rarely consider the environmental cost of a 100% plant-based diet. Very often, abstaining from eating meat/diary is understood as this amazing thing one can do for their environment and the planet in general, and some such.... because plants imported from halfway across the world can fill dietary holes left by animal-based protein and lack of variety it poses - avocado, bananas, chia and quinoa, citrus and so on. All easily available.

In general, being vegan is not in any way anymore environmentally friendly than not-being one (vegan leather, etc). A vegan milkshake form nestle is in no way 'friendlier' to the nature than the milkshake standing next to it. Same with vegan cheese. Vegan burgers. Nut milks. Every 'vegan' product pumped out by a company halfway-across the world.

It's a moral choice and should be recognised and respected as such. The only genuinely environmentally-friendly diet is local - and thus limited to seasonality of greens and fruit. It's a diet that usually contains meat by the sheer force of the lack of options.

And modern humans hate not having options. The ideal weekly menu serves something else every couple days at least. The ideal diet is ‘varied’ and ‘full’ and ‘providing all vitamins and micro-elements we need’ and that means all the vegetables and fruit all the time. We are convinced that we need everything and get used to having everything available at all times, fresh and clean and beautiful. It’s hard to give it up.

They're doing their best, bless them, these poor actors, but they got no help from the makeup, costumes, scenography depts and even goddamn wig makersTT

Regardless of my gripes Elden Ring is still a super fun game.

However, nothing in it as of far.

Came even close to making the impression that fucker made on me in Bloodborne

My #1 post of 2022

Started feeling towards Ranni recently.

How lonely she is. How her family fell apart and now all she has is her scheming and 3 companions. Out of which she knows one has no loyalty. How she knows that her protector will stand against her and how inevitable it is - she knows the end of her plan will result in losing Blaidd, the one person left to her.

How both of her brothers and mother fell to madness and how her own mission sometimes seems just as mad. How she wants revenge on those responsible, but those turn out to be further from her grasp than Queen Marika.

How did she feel discovering that her family was destroyed as a collateral of someone else's bid for freedom? That all the misery that befell them turned out unimportant? That her father is the key to revenge - a puppet in the hands of Others.

What sort of anger carried her through the ages on her impossible mission?
