Name this ridiculous creature.
So, we've got this thing living with us now, and we can't come to a consensus on a name. Please, help us settle this and end our nightmare.
Creature in question:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything you need to know about her: 1. She is tiny. 2. She sounds like a squeaky hinge.
Only a day on the poll because my wife doesn't want to wait a whole week without knowing this thing's name, I guess.

Let Tumblr crowdsource dinosaur names!
As discussed by @a-dinosaur-a-day, several dinosaur groups have common names along with their scientific names, but there is no easily accessible place where they are compiled. And, most importantly - most dinosaurs don't have any yet!
That is why I'm launching a dinosaur name crowdsourcing. Reblog this post with common names for dinosaurs - either already existing ones, or ones you think would fit - and they will be added to the table!

i had to share this convo i had with a friend from undergrad
absolutely incomprehensible drivel. i love biology.
(CONTEXT: we were both entomology majors together and i'm currently creating slides for a guest lecture on arthropod systematics. arachnids are a notoriously controversial group because scientists can't agree on whether horseshoe crabs get to be in the club or not. i was reading an absolute taxonomic smackdown of a paper and had to share)
TL;DR nerd shit

Same Name, Different Ages.
Two Aredhels in different stories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aredhel Ar-Feiniel (Irissë)
"...she was fearless and hardy of heart, as were all the children of Finwë" ― Quenta Silmarillion, "Of Maeglin"
Aredhel, also called Ar-Feiniel or the White Lady of the Noldor, was the third child and only daughter of Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor, and Anairë who herself was also a Noldo. Her elder brothers were Fingon and Turgon, and her youngest brother was Argon. Much later in Beleriand, she became the mother of Maeglin, whose father was Eöl, "the Dark Elf".
Aredhel was tall and strong, fond of hunting and riding in the forests. Her skin was pale and her hair dark; she always wore silver and white. She was fond of the sons of Fëanor, especially Celegorm and Curufin.
Arelle Ar-Luinuen (Aredhel The Noble Blue Maiden; Aiarmaiue)
"...And Arelle Ar-Luinuen, a hushed awe fell over the gathered family members. Dressed in a beautiful robe with the hues of the morning sky. Dark brown with the silver highlights were her wavy braided hair, and her eyes sparkled like the seawater reflected under the sun." —The Elemmírion, Sinyatuilë (Draft)
Arelle Ar-Luinuen, named after the renowned Aredhel Ar-Feiniel, emerges as one of the characterd appeared in "The Elemmírion". Born on either 27 March 1991, her heritage weaves together the noble lineage of Elves and the mortal roots of humanity—25/32 Elf (Falmarin) and 7/32 Human.
She was proficient as a young markswoman by wielding a rifle, also her calling extends beyond the Seventh Age as she embraces the role of a healer. Her compassionate nature and innate understanding of both Elven and human anatomy make her a formidable force in mending wounds and ailments.
Brief Background: Arelle is the eldest daughter of Aiardil Alatarāto Oiolótë, a prominent Lord of the Valinorean Teleri and the current scion of the Great House of Olwë via the Off-branch House of Oiolótë, and Alcaro Tomislav Brković, son of a Peredhel Elanor II Artanárë who was sorted into Slytherin.
Etymology: The name "Arelle Ar-Luinuen" is a Telerin cognate of the Sindarin name meaning "Aredhel, the Noble Blue Maiden."

Sometime in middle school I wrote a science report on two animals. The kangaroo rat and seaweed seahorse. I wad obsessed by these 2 creatures.
And in college I was convinced that that they were indeed real but no one knew what the hell I was talking about. In addition even the internet made it feel like I created some fever dream Pokemon.
It turned out that during the time I wrote my report and college, the popular common name had switched to "hopping mice" and "leafy seadragon".
I'm happy to say that kangaroo rat is back to kangaroo rat and well...leafy seadragon is such a badass name, so I have nothing to complain about.

So I got a complaint from a client about their website today.
In brief, this client operates an online directory, in which companies within a particular industry can advertise their services.
Companies appearing in this directory have the option to voluntarily disclose which of a pre-defined list of "visible minority" identifiers apply to the company's ownership: "disabled", "LGBT", etc.
Companies appearing in this directory also have the ability to list people – typically owners or directors – associated with the company. The same visible minority identifiers which apply to companies can also voluntarily be applied to individual people listed under a company.
Today, the website's operator decided to add a new identifier to the list. I'm not sure why they chose to phrase it the way they did, or whether they just forgot that the same list of visible minority identifiers is used for both companies and persons, but the short version is that they want to know why the site's users now have the ability to designate people as "Female Owned".

I think it's fun that the fandom has collectively decided that Denji and Power inherited Aki's last name after he big-brother-orphaned them for basically the entire Public Safety Saga.

ive recently properly got into the hunger games, and me being me one of the things that interests me most is the names and worldbuilding! so here's some quick thoughts on why foxface being called Finch can or does make sense.
Many hg names (excluding d12) are dependant on their status on the urban-rural scale of things, as well as their industries. A lot of people think district 5 is completely urban - and I get that. when you think power, electricity and all that, yeah you may think hulking, brutalistic architecture and smog and smoke and city. But that's not the only way to harvest power. As the hunger games trilogy takes place at least a couple centuries into the future, its not likely that natural gas and crude oil will be the main sources of energy. While online sources don't agree on a certain time frame for this limit, one thing they do agree is that those reserves (and this is the whole of the us not just one district) won't be lasting to reach a hunger games canon timeline time.
And in the film's there's a dam shown! a hydroelectric dam, showing they use renewable energy as at least part of their power resources. With a dam like that, we can theorise they use other water based types of renewable energy, such as tidal or wave. in addition some places also have wind turbines out at sea instead of on land. so overall this suggests district 5 is by a tidal river and/or the sea.
In addition, other forms of renewable power come from rural areas. Rapeseed and soy are the two main biodiesel fuels used for biofuels, where plants are combusted to produce electricity. that's not exactly urban - far more an 11 or 9 vibe.
So maybe Foxface comes from a rural area, or maybe Finch is a name originally from the biofuel more agricultural areas that was popularised or her parents just liked it.
So it's quite likely that with its likely cities, power plants, dams, wave and tidal energy sources, solar farms, wind turbines and biofuels, five is one of the most diverse human environmental districts. that makes it interesting to me due to how that differs from the straight up yup that's fields or yup that's quarries and a merchant sector that many of the other districts seem to have.
so give me district five characters named Finch, or Tydal or Albert or Joule or Zephyr or geothermal nuclear powerplant the second this place can do so many name vibes compared to a lot of the other districts if you look at how their naming tends to work.

Hello there, I was looking at the asoiaf appendices and noticed House Greyjoy’s current Maester is called Wendamyr - my question is, based on naming conventions in the story, where do you think Maester Wendamyr is from originally and do you think he would be of the nobility or lowborn? Thanks
The only "Wenda" we see is a feminine name, Wenda the White Fawn of the Kingswood Brotherhood. Which helps us little because we don't know where she hailed from and that might have been a moniker.
The Myr name is interesting, because there are times when a location becomes part of a name. Take for example the name "Veneto" which in Italian means "of Venice." A name with something like "damyr" in the name could have originally meant "of Myr" or "from Myr." Given how close Myr is, there could be settlers who took that nomenclature, which has seen passed on into the vernacular as a name, regardless whether or not the person in question or their family has any Myrrish ancestry at all.
But that's all wholly speculative. So don't take it as authoritative.
Thanks for the question, Anon.

Naruse: "Yamai"? Sounds like a creep. Onemine: You can’t judge someone based on their name. Naruse: Sure you can. “Naruse.” Cool name. Cool guy. Naruse: (gestures at Tadano) “Tadano”…I rest my case.
