Day 20 - Skin

Monday, 27 December 2038 – Age 39 Nahyuta had made themselves a cup of tea and were reading in the living room. It was “this time of the year” again and they were glad that Simon wasn’t too much of a Christmas enthusiast himself. It would have made this time a lot more stressful as it already was.

They both had decided to take it slow for the last weak of the year and weren’t going anywhere for the next couple of days except the little New Year’s party in Edgeworth and Wright’s place. It wouldn’t be a long evening as most of the children were still to young and easily bored to stay at a party for the whole night. So, they and Simon had decided to get over at Athena’s after the party and the day after they would visit Klavier and Apollo. It wouldn’t be for long but it didn’t need to be. They’d see each other soon enough again.

Contently musing over the next few days Nahyuta almost overheard a little sigh coming from their living room. As a huff followed Nahyuta stood up to check what Simon was up to.

Quietly they entered their bed room and found Simon standing half naked in front of the mirror of their closet and slowly touching the fading scar on the right side directly over his lowest rib. It was the one he had gotten when an inmate had attacked him with the leg of a table in dining hall.

Most of his scars had a similar history and Nahyuta knew them all by now. Simon had told them over time and it wasn’t easy for them to sit by and listen to their partner listing these horrible fights and attacks. The awareness that Simon often struggled to look at them himself didn’t make it any easier for Nahyuta to not pity him.

Nahyuta leaned against the door frame and let Simon inspect the marks further. He was rather calm and subtle about it and the first time Nahyuta saw his expression change into a bit more unpleasant one, was when his hands reached for his face and he started to lightly touch his forehead.

Raising their eyebrows Nahyuta knocked at the doorframe and got Simon’s attention. The man turned and watched them in surprise.

“What is this?” Nahyuta asked and got closer to him.

Simon shook his head and glimpsed from his reflection over to Nahyuta. They took his hands and he let them procced while watching his fingers slightly twitch in their hands.

“… Do you need some body positivity for once?”

Simon’s lips flinched downwards and his hand jerked away to cover the upper part of his chest. Nahyuta knew that kind of reaction. They struggled with their weight gain for quite a while and Simon had told them time and time again that they tended to hide themselves when they were struggling with their image.

“Simon.”

He looked up and then turned his face back to the mirror. His skin was a bit bumpy there, on the forehead and on the temples, you would discover little acne scars and, on his nose, you still found little blackheads. They weren’t really prominent and not immediately visible but Simon knew they were there and today was a day when they really bothered him.

“Sometimes, I really wonder what you see in this face that makes you smile”, Simon mumbled, turned away from the mirror and sat down on the bed

He watched Nahyuta and they followed slowly and kept standing in front of him.

Nahyuta waited. They needed a bit more to work with, if they wanted to help Simon. And they knew with him it could take quite some time until he would open up more.

“Not that is necessarily disgusting”, Simon conceded, “but it’s not really aesthetically pleasing, is it? Of course, attractiveness is subjective, but I really do not look that inviting, do I?”

With a disregarding motion he pointed at his face and body, talking about the marks his life had left on him and could never be taken back.

Nahyuta sat down next to him. They let their hand wander up to the armlet, where the von Karma scar was. They looked at if for a moment and then turned to Simon’s face with a smile. Gently they pushed his hair back behind his ears with their other hand and eventually let it rest on his cheek.

“It makes me smile because it is your face, first of all”, Nahyuta began and glimpsed at concentrated eyes on the light frown on his face. “And there are a lot of other things I enjoy looking at to be frank. “I never saw a man quite like you and I know I can say that about anybody, but doesn’t take anything away from your uniqueness, panda. “You’ve got a beautiful eye shape and colour. They aren’t big and overzealous, but so subtle and so calm. And they are so nicely framed with your dark lashes. Absolutely enchanting. “I like the edgy nose and the thin lips as well. They match the rough demeanour you display so often and the harshness you encountered without backing down. “And for your skin – They pushed away the bangs and felt the unevenness of his forehead – I like it just as much. It might not be something you think is nice, and maybe a lot of others don’t, but it is something I wish you could look at with my eyes. “It is raw and so delicate, like the borders of the continents. It’s so asymmetrical and fine. I understand you look at it an see an imperfection and a cause of mockery, because this is what you’ve been through. And I wish you had never had to go through this, but these scars do not show that you’ve lost and will not keep you down. “I will not ask you to like them. You don’t need to. But maybe to look at them like a historical event, something that happened, maybe wasn’t pleasant and could have been avoided, but brought you here or didn’t manage to get you down. Something you could live with one day. “And to mention the scars – They drove along the outline of the armlet scar – They’ve faded a lot since I’ve first seen them. Now they are more like light patches that shine a bit funnily in the light and have strange patterns in the sun. And I find that quite beautiful too.”

They smiled at him and softly lifted his palm up to their face to press a kiss in it. Cheekily they glimpsed up to him and saw the faint blush on Simon’s cheeks. They forgot so often that Simon needed sometimes a bit of reassurance for his body. To them he was such a pretty man, strong and a little rough around the edges but with such a powerful aura and certainty that it never occurred to them he would be interested in the opinions of others about his looks.

Their words seemed to have calmed the man and Nahyuta hugged him from the side and then handed him the PJ’s top, which was laying on the bed.

“Now, my dear, would you like me to give you some nice nail polish? You always seem to enjoy the looks of your pretty, black nails”, Nahyuta proposed, while standing up and offering him their hand.

With a slightly shy smile Simon took it and replied, already being led into their living room: “No objections here.”
