Another sketch brought to you by #paleostream
Elephants have an enormous impact on their environment, now imagine this impact tenfold and you will begin to understand how some sauropods must have shaped their ecosystems, even the very landscapes they inhabited. Even in death.
Here a thunderstorm in the highlands has killed a few Brachiosaurus and the rain has washed them together with debris, resulting not in a log jam but a saurojam.
Interestingly this hypothetical idea might have been a real event based on a SVP abstract that came out this year.

Remapping Sovereignty: Decolonization and Self-Determination in North American Indigenous Political Thought
In Remapping Sovereignty, David Temin discusses how Native American writers, thinkers, and activists have posited alternatives to sovereignty as the primary form of modern political organization. Arguing that sovereignty conceals destructive assumptions about power, violence, and subjugation of the other, Temin instead shows how the "earthmaking" practices of Indigenous communities imagine a world rooted in kinship. This book is a scholarly monograph, mainly of interest to specialists in Indigenous studies. It would also be a good candidate for a graduate seminar or similarly advanced class.

Guaranty Building, Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler, 1893, Buffalo NY.
"This view let me now state, for it brings to the solution of the problem a final, comprehensive formula: All things in nature have a shape, that is to say, a form, an outward semblance, that tells us what they are, that distinguishes them from ourselves and from each other.
...
Whether it be the sweeping eagle in his flight, or the open apple-blossom, the toiling workhorse, the blithe swan, the branching oak, the winding stream at its base, the drifting clouds, over all the coursing sun, form ever follows function, and this is the law. Where function does not change form does not change. The granite rocks, the ever-brooding hills, remain for ages; the lightning lives, comes into shape, and dies in a twinkling.
It is the pervading law of all things organic and inorganic, of all things physical and metaphysical, of all things human and all things superhuman, of all true manifestations of the head, of the heart, of the soul, that the life is recognizable in its expression, that form ever follows function. This is the law."
- Louis Sullivan, The tall office building artistically considered. Lippincott's Magazine, March 1896.
Go read the whole article if you have time. I couldn't paste it all here. It's beautiful. And everyone misinterprets the phrase. It was not a command that form should follow function, it was an observation of the slow evolution of natural forms that they always follow their (not always obvious or direct) function.
But about this building. Adam Caruso writes in his 2016 course outline, also where these gorgeous drawings come from:
"Structure is not simply about performance, about the length of a span, the weight of a beam and the ease of construction. These are the pragmatic engineering qualities of a structure. The design of a structure should be, in the first instance, about atmosphere, space and beauty. The imaginative upper part of a space and whether it is dark or light, plain or highly patterned these things have a profound effect on how we feel and what we are inspired to do in a place."
This building executes.

Pox Americana: The Great Smallpox Epidemic of 1775-82
Since its original publication in 2002, Pox Americana has become a hugely influential scholarly work. In this book, Elizabeth A. Fenn argues that while the American Revolution changed political and military conditions throughout the world, the smallpox epidemic created upheavals throughout North America from 1775 to 1782. Serving as Distinguished Professor of Early America and Native American History at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Fenn uses her expertise on diseases and Native American history to discuss the causes, spread, and communities affected by smallpox. In addition to secondary sources from leading historians, Fenn cites burial records from Catholic parishes in Spanish America and correspondence from American revolutionaries, including John and Abigail Adams and George Washington.
