okay so bpms i wanted to share but my internet cut out three times so i gave up but here:
samurai slice origins' slowest (i think) tempo is 69 (nice)
love lab and pajama party are both 103 bpm
dj school's either 109 or 105. i cannot remember which for the life of me. i think 105 but whatever.
there's like. wayyyy too many games that're 120 bpm, it's the most common tempo. just off the top of my head, the following games are 120:
sneaky spirits' base tempo
space dance
quiz show (might be 121)
remix 2
crop stomp
splashdown (both 1 and 2)
see-saw base tempo
samurai slice
exhibition match
prequel karate man
super samurai slice
karate man senior base tempo
i'm definitely missing some but that's 12 games just off the top of my head.
there's also like. 9 or smth that're 142, including both fan clubs, both shoot-'em-ups, samurai slice 2, super samurai slice 2, and right-hand remix.
also rhythm rally's 182.1.
remix 8's primarily 172 but ends at 220 except on the soundtrack it's 182 throughout.
oh also lockstep's 162. and air rally's 182. and rap men and rap women are 180.
also i think 135's pretty common. like. lockstep 2 and remix 6 and i think some megamix remixes are that.
remix 6 is 138.7, ds remix 10's 160, fever remix 10's 166, left-hand's 125, and final starts at 160 but speeds up to 170 and 180 in the last lumbearjack 2 part.
that's about all tho.
so. um. yeah.

Apollo 11
Tumblr media
Space shit fucks me up. My mom’s always been super into space flight and aviation, and it seeped into me like UV rays even though I didn’t know it at the time. The first time I fell in love as an adult it was while I was reading about the impossible dream of the first Voyager probe and all the feelings that tiny metal pioneer inspired. The first time I said “I love you” to Wife, it was after she explained to me why she had a poster of an image from the Hubble on her wall and what it meant to her.
I’m a slut for space, I can’t help it.
So I was pretty excited to see this documentary hyperfocused on Apollo 11, from right before liftoff to right after splashdown. Much like my other documentary of 2019, They Shall Not Grow Old, this film consists only of real photos and footage from the time period in question, with voiceover supplied by 1969 Mission Control. For those of us who weren’t alive in 1969 to devour all the moon landing content that was being put out, this is an opportunity to take a deep dive into the mechanics of the mission. Does it convey the appropriate sense of awe and wonder that all our parents and grandparents felt on that game-changing day of July 20, 1969? Well...
The focus here is on the mission, the science, the technical specs, and the execution of each specific maneuver that made the moon landing possible. What’s missing for me is the human factor. The star here is the science, not the scientists, and I get that - the Apollo missions were a scientific achievement that was unprecedented and unparalleled in modern history. Unlike They Shall Not Grow Old, there is little done to connect the enormity of The Event with the small-scale human stories of all the people on the front lines making it happen. Granted, there isn’t a shortage of those stories at all, but for me personally, I was left feeling a little cold without that sense of human connection.
Some thoughts:
One interesting tactic used by the filmmakers was to use these real photos and footage as a visual language to represent these men’s actual memories. Like in explaining who Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins were, they flashed a series of photos on the screen (Armstrong in uniform; at his wedding; a candid shot of him with his children; looking up at the moon in his backyard) and it serves the same effect as a montage in a high school movie watching the protagonist grow up during the credits so we can get into the real action - but these are real photos and real memories. It’s a fictional storytelling device used in an otherwise VERY nonfictional (and kinda dry) film, and it stood out to me as interesting.
Essentially, you’re in the Lunar Control Center watching each intricate step happen during the flight of Apollo 11 as it happens. It’s very fly-on-the-wall style, which certainly lends a sense of immediacy and urgency to the proceedings.
There are other trappings of movie magic here to liven up the dry, technical recounting of each phase of the mission as well. For me, the tense electronic music makes narrative sense, but in execution feels like a weird choice for the soundtrack, because we all know how each part of this ends. It’s hard to maintain a sense of nervousness about the outcome because as soon as your gut clenches, your mind helpfully reminds you, “um, they landed on the moon so...this part must go fine.”
Also bizarre was hearing Nixon in his telephone call to the astronauts after they were on their way back to Earth committing to a future of “peace and tranquility.”
Not everything was shredded wheat and Gap khakis though - there are some moments of humor and heart that show the men and their vulnerability and humanity over the course of the mission. Hearing the astronauts crack jokes and tease each other makes them feel so down-to-earth (punintentional) and human.
It’s those little nuggets of human connection that I wanted so much more of - I’m thinking of the reporting of Armstrong’s heart rate as they attempt certain maneuvers - but there’s no room for the humanity of it all when the framework is so clinically, methodically detached because it has to be to make sure everything is planned and executed to the millisecond. I understand WHY it is the way it is. I still want more.
At least Kennedy’s speech - shown at length at the very end of the film - still brings a tear to my eye.
Ultimately the drama in a story like this comes from either A) not knowing the outcome or B) an investment in the interior lives of the astronauts, or the scientists at Mission Control. This offers neither. It’s just step-by-step, minute detail of each stage of the mission. The science is dazzling, don’t get me wrong! And I think it should never be discounted how much work and sacrifice went into overcoming all the laws of nature and humankind to send us hurtling into the sky and traipsing among the stars. But those stories are, I think it’s safe to say, very much a thing that currently exists and this is something else. There’s not much drama here, just a tough job being performed excellently.

The Beatles' animated personas were based on their appearance in the promotional film for the song "Strawberry Fields Forever", with the exception of Paul being without his moustache. The film also includes several references to songs not included in the soundtrack, including "A Day in the Life", where the lyrics are referenced in the "Sea of Holes" scene, as well as the orchestral breaks earlier in the film, also from "A Day in the Life".
National and foreign animators were assembled by TVC. American animator Robert Balser and Jack Stokes were hired as the film's animation directors.[12][13] Charlie Jenkins, one of the film's key creative directors, was responsible for the entire "Eleanor Rigby" sequence, as well as the submarine travel from Liverpool, through London, to splashdown. Jenkins also was responsible for "Only a Northern Song" in the Sea of Science, plus much of the multi-image sequences. A large crew of skilled animators, including (in alphabetical order) Alan Ball, Ron Campbell, John Challis, Hester Coblentz, Geoff Collins, Rich Cox, Duane Crowther, Tony Cuthbert, Malcolm Draper, Paul Driessen, Cam Ford, Norm Drew, Tom Halley, Dick Horne, Arthur Humberstone, Dennis Hunt, Greg Irons, Dianne Jackson, Anne Jolliffe, Dave Livesey, Reg Lodge, Geoff Loynes, Lawrence Moorcroft, Ted Percival, Mike Pocock and Gerald Potterton, were responsible for bringing the animated Beatles to life. The background work was executed by artists under the direction of Alison de Vere and Millicent McMillan who were both background supervisors. Ted Lewis and Chris Miles were responsible for animation cleanup.
George Dunning, who also worked on the Beatles cartoon series, was the overall director for the film, supervising over 200 artists for 11 months. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was Dunning's idea, which he turned over to Bill Sewell, who delivered more than thirty minutes of rotoscoped images. By that time, Dunning was unavailable, and Bob Balser, with the help of Arne Gustafson, edited the material to its sequence length in the film.
The animation design of Yellow Submarine has sometimes been incorrectly attributed to famous psychedelic pop art artist of the era Peter Max, but the film's art director was Heinz Edelmann. Edelmann, along with his contemporary Milton Glaser, pioneered the psychedelic style for which Max would later become famous, but according to Edelmann and producer Al Brodax, as quoted in the book Inside the Yellow Submarine by Hieronimus and Cortner, Max had nothing to do with the production of Yellow Submarine.[14]
The film's surreal visual style, created by creative director Heinz Edelmann, contrasts greatly with the efforts of Disney Feature Animation and other animated films previously released by Hollywood up until the time. The film uses a style of limited animation. It also paved the way for Terry Gilliam's animations for Do Not Adjust Your Set and Monty Python's Flying Circus (particularly the Eleanor Rigby sequence), as well as the Schoolhouse Rock vignettes for ABC and similar-looking animation in early seasons of Sesame Street and The Electric Company. (As such, only one of the animation staff of Yellow Submarine did indeed contribute subsequent animation to Children's Television Workshop: Ron Campbell.)

In the late ’60s, the son of Soul and Rock was born and it would eventually be known as FUNK. The Godfather James Brown and Sly and Family Stone cultivated it and handed it to the likes of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and a whole new legion of funketeers who perfected it by the mid-’70s. This was a brand of music which emphasized the one beat led by bass and drums, the horns and guitars would carry it the rest of the way. This was black music getting down and dirty with attitude and theatrics. Before there was hip hop, there was FUNK. This was the music of my youth, this was my neighborhood, and this is my soundtrack.
On this episode, we will hear from Parliament, Slave, George Duke, Quasar, Roger Troutman, and many more.
