Neopronouns in Action #053: The Cycle of Lives
Neopronouns: pearl/pearls/pearlself which follow the same rules as it/its/itself
Replace it with pearl Replace its with pearls Replace itself with pearlself
EX:
"It is going to adopt a new puppy soon, as soon as it gets a fence set up around its yard so the puppy can go outside without it having to walk it. Its uncle is going to help set up the fence, since he has a set of power tools he's letting it use, since it lost its. It's going to buy toys and train the puppy itself."
Becomes:
"Pearl is going to adopt a new puppy soon, as soon as pearl gets a fence set up around pearls yard so the puppy can go outside without pearl having to walk it. Pearls uncle is going to help set up the fence, since he has a set of power tools he's letting pearl use, since pearl lost pearls. Pearl's going to buy toys and train the puppy pearlself."
= = =
It never ceased to amaze pearl how tiny they were.
When they were born, they were no bigger than pearls smallest claw, and weighed so little, pearl could barely even feel them when their mother proudly strapped them into their first saddle on pearls back.
They grew up slower than the domestic animals, but so much faster than a dragon, so that by the time the hatchlings born on the same day gained to fly short distances on their own, the humans had already long since lost their baby teeth and were already halfway to maturity, going through puberty starting to take on the first characteristics that defined adults in their species.
But they always stayed small, even as fully grown elders, never getting bigger than a newborn hatchling.
Pearls human was sleeping in the saddle, now several times larger, and several decades older than the first time they had slept there. Their weight was now noticeable, but still so slight pearl thought pearl would never mind, no matter how big they got.
Humans stored fat on their bodies just like dragons did, and pearls human was very fat. Pearl preferred them this way, especially after they'd gotten sick for so long and lost so much of their weight, pearl hadn't even been able to feel if they were in the saddle or not, and had had to constantly keep twisting pearls head around to make sure they hadn't fallen off, despite the constant, if weakened, humm of their telepathic bond.
The landscape below pearl was serene, dark grasslands and darker, tree-thickened hills cut through here and there with thin wisps of rivers and creeks that glowed yellow in the light of the full moons behind them.
The destination of both rivers and dragon and rider lay ahead of them near the horizon, growing closer with every lazy wingbeat.
Pearl had flown this journey so many times over pearls lifetime that pearl knew almost exactly how many more wingbeats it would take before pearl could land, if the wind kept up its pattern.
On pearls back, through their bond, pearl could see and feel pearls human was dreaming of flying alongside pearl, with midnight blue and red wings to match pearls black and white, dancing and twirling with pearl through the skies like a hatchling that had never known sorrow. Even in this dream, they were still so small, their wingspan only the size of one of pearl's wings. It was hard to remember what it was like to be big when your current body was so small.
In their next life, they would be the dragon they were in their dreams, and in a few hundred more years, if nothing else killed pearl before pearl could die of old age, pearl would be reborn as the human pearl was in pearls dreams, tiny and fragile and growing so swiftly, running and swimming and wrestling with pearls human in a body of the same size and strength.
For now, this was pearls body, and pearl wasn't ready to give it up just yet. Pearl liked being big enough to carry pearls human while they slept.
Pearl flew on into the peaceful wind, and through their bond, pearl danced and dove through the air with pearls human in their next body.

Pro tip, writers who only use she/her or he/him pronouns:
If you usually write everything in 3rd person POV, but just suddenly feel the need to write in the 1st person as soon as you're dealing with a character who uses neopronouns of some sort, that is your unpacked exorsexism talking and trying to make you avoid using the pronouns that make you uncomfortable.
Resist the urge. Write your story in 3rd person POV just the same way you would if the character used she/her or he/him. Get used to it.
Switching to 1st person POV as soon as it's about a character that uses they/them or it/its or xe/xem is the lazy cowardly exorsexist way out. You can do better. Accept the challenge, or at least have the strength to admit you're choosing the coward's way out on purpose.
And no, saying that "using it/its pronouns in the 3rd person is just too difficult tho :(" is not an excuse, that's just an admission that you don't know how to write.

i DESPISE it when people say that it/its is dehumanizing to people who USE IT/ITS!!! like, are you saying that ALL people who use it/its aren't human????? who's doing the dehumanizing here??????
also, what if the person using it/its doesn't mind????? are you going to shame them for appreciating a feeling of non-human-ness?? for being weird in their own way???????
you could say similar of people who use xenogenders and neopronouns/nounself pronouns.... are you going to shame them and say "oh you're not actually x you're just trying to be quirky"......
please be normal about people who use it/its or neopronouns or nounself pronouns or xenogenders or anything else such as this

while i'm thinking about it, here's the pronoun masterlist that i worked on and possibly will never work on again unless i get bored and decide i have the motivation.
it has about 12,100 pronoun sets in it, and they're sorted into columns alphabetically. emojipronouns are sorted by color. sheet 2 is emojipronouns i haven't sorted through because they also need to be put in the format that i want them in.
this sheet is a conglomerate of pronoun sets copy and pasted from various tumblr posts, along with a few variations of some sets that i typed in. due to the fact that most of this was pasted and sorted automatically without actually looking through it, there may be some potentially offensive material, but i'm not sure. i'm not responsible for any sets that may have been posted that are offensive and/or are now out of the context of a reclamation post.
if anyone finds this to be a project they're interested in helping with, you can send me a dm and we can discuss it :]
@pronounsmegamix (tagging you because i know you're working on a masterlist and might find mine helpful, idk)

Just a question but as someone who's nullpronominal / uses no pronouns, I'm wondering why "use name as pronouns" and "no pronouns" were split in the pronoun polls?
I + the other nullpronominal people I know all consider ourselves both (since we usually have to phrase it as "no pronouns, please just use my name if you refer to me!" for people to understand) so we're just a little curious about the split there.
Or am I just totally misreading this and it's about using a name as a pronoun set? (e.g. emily/emily's/emilyself)
In previous big annual surveys I've combined "use name as pronouns" and "avoid pronouns" into one checkbox option, including this year.
But I have always wondered whether technically they're the same option or not. I've learned in the past that combining two almost-identical options is sometimes unexpectedly Trouble, for one. And also, I can sort of see how the two are very subtly different, if I think about it too much:
"Avoid pronouns" is when you refer to someone by name and then, in all speech where you would use a pronoun, you sneakily avoid pronouns somehow.
"Chris said his sister liked her birthday present" --> "Chris said his sibling liked the birthday present"
"This is Chris! He likes zebras" --> "This is Charlie, who likes zebras"
"Use name as pronoun" is when you substitute in someone's name in any place where you would have used a pronoun.
"Chris bought a coffee for himself and one for his friend Sadie" --> "Alex bought a coffee for Alex and one for Alex's friend Sadie"
Or, as you said, that could well use "Alexself" as the reflexive, nounself style.
So, perhaps this is the start of me investigating whether there is a difference, and whether anyone prefers one but not the other. (Then I can decide whether to split them in the big annual survey.)
