Conócete a ti mismo

Una cosa sólo ha buscado el hombre en todo tiempo,

y lo ha hecho en todas partes, en las cimas y en las simas

del mundo.

Bajo nombres distintos –en vano– se ocultaba siempre,

y siempre, aun creyéndola cerca, se le iba de las manos.

Hubo hace tiempo un hombre que en amables mitos infantiles

revelaba a sus hijos las llaves y el camino de un castillo escondido.

Pocos lograban conocer la sencilla clave del enigma,

pero esos pocos se convertían entonces en maestros

del destino.

Discurrió largo tiempo –el error nos aguzó el ingenio–

y el mito dejó ya de ocultarnos la verdad.

Feliz quien se ha hecho sabio y ha dejado su obsesión por el mundo,

quien por sí mismo anhela la piedra de la sabiduría eterna.

El hombre razonable se convierte entonces en discípulo auténtico,

todo lo transforma en vida y en oro, no necesita ya los elixires.

Bulle dentro de él el sagrado alambique, está el rey en él,

y también Delfos, y al final comprende lo que significa

conócete a ti mismo.
