We haven’t done rats yet, have we? Something like an opossum (ik it’s a marsupial), or an ROUS ('Rodent of Unusual Size' from Princess Bride fame). It would have a long hairless tail and that skull-helmet design that Grimm are known for. They would maybe be a foot or two long, often solitary, but they can swarm something fierce. They more often attack structures than people, but they do have a nasty bite due to those long teeth.

RWBY WA here, just finished volume 4.

It did feel like volume 1 work mostly introduction to the "new" world and more characters. It was simple and it was nice to see more locations and the extended family.

I loved Sun so much, even if he didn't do much.

I'm wondering if the birds siblings (Qrow and Raven) are faunus because it looks like Raven is part of the White Fangs?! (The mask)

Do you know any good winter monsters besides yetis?

Nucklavees from Scottish folklore are interesting creatures and I don't see a lot of people talk about them (I think I have plans for something involving one, or at least did in the past and forgotten it, but it did catch my interest at some point). It's essentially a horseman and a horse fused together without skin, with two heads (a human head and a horse head) with one giant red eye each. It's said to cause plagues, famines, and droughts and it kept trapped away during the Summer months by the Sea Mither. Check it out! It's an interesting one!

Kallikantzaros of Greek Mythology are quite fun, as they are essentially little imp creatures that try very hard at being evil, but are very bad at it.

Yukionna are of Japanese mythology as a type of yokai. Essentially it's what happens when a woman dies in the cold, and she essentially becomes a witch that has powers of the snow and the cold and bewitches people to steal their souls. I believe the Pokémon Froslass is somewhat based on the Yukionna.

Those are three of them that I've found, but other than that, there are other creatures that can be reflavoured to be more winter-themed, such as a Caribou Centaur (or cervitaur, if you wanna be more specific) or a Winter Faerie. There's plenty to work with whether you wanna go more obscure or more well-known. Any of these can be tweaked or retooled to whatever suits your fancy.

What are some creatures from other franchises that you think would make some good grimm in Rwby?

Turtleduck from the Avatar series. They're vicious little things when provoked.

But a bit more seriously speaking? And we're talking not just other creatures like those from our blue ball, but other franchises specifically? Bigger question than I expected, but lets rack my brain for a bit.

So Remnant's Grimm generally have some earth-like creatures they're based of off. Wolves, gorillas, snakes and ravens to name a few.

If you're going to look outside of whatever we've stuffed in our zoos and museums, things will get fantastical rather quickly.

So... let's grab/steal/incorporate a staple creature from Dungeons & Dragons:

The Owlbear.

It's big, larger than even the biggest bears we have today, and could probably grow to gigantic proportions when they're ancient enough. It'd be like Cocaine-Bear mixed with PED's and growth hormones.

It's vicious, in DnD lore they're already incredibly territorial, get some Grimm mindlessness and a hunger for negative emotions in there, and even the Nucklavee could be given run for it's money when it comes to being a terror.

It's face could easily be turned from a somewhat innocuous looking owl to a an absolutely terrifying Grimm lookalike. A regular owlbear is already a challenge for a pre-6th level adventuring party. Grimm Owlbears would probably make student Huntsfolk tremble and might even have experienced Hunters think twice on their approach.

You'd make that thing Grimm with black unfeeling flesh instead of thick fur and thicker muscle. Then you add the white bone plates and you got a Grimm that could turn away most small arms fire without flinching as a non-ancient.

Imagine that as an ancient Grimm and you'll likely want the back-up of some heavy hitters to take it down.

What scene/song/character/whatever in RWBY do you think the fandom (or at least this corner of it) underrates? (Mine is Weiss vs the Lancers - its's not the nevermore fight, or either of the v6 finales, but its probably the best pure fight (i.e. not counting character moments such as Ren and Nora in the Nucklavee fight) in v4 and v5)

Like, when Jaune fell in vol 8 you had this group of people get annoyed because they wanted vol 9 to be "purely about team RWBY" (and were probably part of that section of the FNDM that reacted to Jaune's existence in vol 4 like he was the antichrist). But really, why the fuck wouldn't you want the guy who killed Penny again to show up on Character Development Island along with the girl who may or may not have been in love with her? You really want to miss out on that??? You want to miss out on Ruby v Jaune crying screaming knocking teeth out?? Ok, lameass.

Also in general Jaune is a much better character than people give him credit for. It really does him and the effort that goes into his writing a disservice to call him a boring white dude and move on. Like guys it's 2023, you don't have to be so afraid that Jaune is going to sweep in and ruin your gay ships anymore we're long past that. Let the man have depth and thematic relevance, he's more than earned it.

I swear on my life I don't remember ever making a story like that.. I seriously doubt I ever did frankly, and you're the second person referring to this story I don't think exists.. Mainly cause I don't think I ever write a grimm story, and if I did, it's CERTAINLY not Ren on this blog.

Recurring haunting thought: what if Tyrian & Hazel had swapped assignments back during the Mistral arc?

That's actually an interesting thought. I can imagine while Hazel would have done okay against the kids when trying to take Ruby, he lacks the agility and the overt menace that Tyrian has and Qrow's arrival would have caused a retreat. Also, Qrow not being poisoned would have really altered the Nucklavee fight as well.

I think Tyrian with Adam would have played out the same. with Sienna dying and the Haven academy fight would likely have gone worse for Tyrian than it did for Hazel. Tyrian lacks the resilience and going up against Qrow and Oz would have been a challenge.
