RICHARD AVEDON: PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH (8/12)
Richard Avedon was a NYC based photographer (1923-2004) whose work began at the young age of 12. It wasn't until his work during the second world war as an identity photographer did he realise that he was truly becoming a photographer. His work spanned many years and he has worked with many big names such as Calvin Klein and Versace, as well as running his own successful business as a freelance photographer. A lot of his work has featured in museums and art galleries, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Tumblr media
This portrait is a full-body shot that communicates the subject's form as a very fluid and feminine entity. It is very visually interesting, especially considering the length of the braid that she seems to be almost dancing with. This seems to be shot in a studio by the looks of the plain background, and the lighting is coming from the left side. It directly hits the subject's face and body, creating a clear division between highlights and shadows. You can also see the shadow being cast by the woman which sits on the right side of her. Overall, this looks like a fashion portrait representing a very abstract femininity. It feels like she is in the middle of a dance, but there is a very calm expression on her face, as though she is in her own element.
Tumblr media
This is a shot that Avedon took of his own wife. I thought this was quite interesting because the glass door she stands behind has been rained on. It creates a filter over her face, which slightly warps her features. It's a mid-body shot that shows her standing in her gown, smoking a cigarette. It looks like she is in a living room with curtains behind her, perhaps just woken up or having a lazy at-home day. Direct natural ambient light comes from outside, most likely diffused by the overcast conditions. This creates a very soft lighting on the subject, creating a mood that is quite fresh and serene. This is juxtaposed with the dim room she's standing in, which is quite dark because of the curtains being drawn.
Tumblr media
This shot is a moving shot with a slower shutter speed as there is quite a bit of motion blur. This is an intentional stylistic choice made by Avedon to create the sense of this woman's movements. This headshot conveys a rapid moment where she is tossing her hair. It's hard to debunk the emotion she may be feeling in this moment- she seems to be focused on whatever she is gazing off at. Perhaps it's as simple as keeping her eyes fixed in one position for the photographer to capture the ultimate shot, which would be difficult. The light in this image looks to be coming in at more than one angle, as both her face and the tops of her hair are illuminated. The underside of her hair and neck are shaded, which creates this very clear contrast, which I think really compliments the stylistic approach of this portrait.

Tips for Achieving the Perfect Headshot
Understanding Lighting
Achieving the perfect headshots in NYC starts with mastering lighting. Natural light is often the most flattering, providing a soft and even illumination. When shooting indoors, position yourself near a large window to benefit from diffused natural light. Avoid harsh overhead lighting, as it can create unflattering shadows. If using artificial lighting, opt for softboxes or diffusers to achieve a similar effect, ensuring your face is well-lit and shadows are minimized.
Choose the Right Background
The background of your headshot plays a crucial role in drawing attention to your face. Opt for a clean, uncluttered background that complements your personality or professional image. Solid colors or subtle textures work well, as they don't distract from your facial features. Avoid busy backgrounds that may divert attention away from the main focal point-you.
Pose Naturally
Pose naturally to capture an authentic and approachable image. Relax your shoulders, keep your head straight, and maintain good posture. Experiment with different angles to find what highlights your best features. Avoid forced smiles or rigid expressions; instead, opt for a genuine smile and let your eyes convey warmth and confidence. Candid shots can often capture the most authentic and engaging moments.
Wardrobe Choices Matter
Your choice of clothing can significantly impact the overall vibe of your headshot. Wear solid colors that complement your skin tone and avoid busy patterns or overly bright hues that might distract. Choose an outfit that aligns with your professional or personal brand. If it's a corporate headshot, consider wearing business attire that reflects your industry. Ensure your clothes are well-fitted and wrinkle-free for a polished appearance.
Invest in Professional Photography
While smartphones have advanced camera capabilities, investing in a professional photographer can make a substantial difference. A skilled photographer understands the nuances of lighting, composition, and editing, ensuring your headshot looks polished and stands out. They can provide guidance on poses, angles, and create an overall professional aesthetic that aligns with your goals.
Conclusion
Achieving the perfect headshot requires a combination of factors.  Compelling headshot is not just a picture; it's a visual representation of your identity and the image you want to convey to the world. By following these tips and approaching the process with intention, you can ensure your headshot leaves a lasting impression, whether it's on a business card, LinkedIn profile, or casting portfolio. Remember, your headshot is often the first impression you make, so make it count.

What Should You Ask Casting Directors About Your Acting Career In New York?
Be prepared for the meeting if an agent of the New York City casting agencies agrees to meet with you to consider agency representation. Ultimately, it's you, the actor, who hires the agency to steer your career, locate and advocate for auditions, and negotiate contracts on your behalf after you "book."
Tumblr media
Here are some of the most important questions to ask agents concerning your acting career.
❖ What Exactly Is a Business Plan?
Goal setting and goal planning are essential. The first inquiry is usually, "What is our business plan for our partnership?" How can we mutually assist one other in succeeding and making money? " Keep in mind that this is show business, and everything is always about money. Note how they respond to this question.
The best agents are ready to assist you and have astonishing ideas to share! An excellent agent would, of course, want to hear all of your ideas for your career and then share their thoughts with you.
Question the agency about how they aim to assist you in obtaining auditions. Verify that they will "pitch" you to casting directors through phone and e-mail.
❖ What Kinds of Positions Are You Looking For?
As with the last question, make sure you understand your casting directors in NYC and that your headshots match the parts you would be appropriate for. If you and your partner aren't on the same page, talk to your talent agent about it and try if you can agree; otherwise, you will be sent to auditions and casting calls where you'll feel entirely out of place.
It's fantastic to give as many acting auditions, but if you don't think you're the kind, it will discourage you, and you'll be disappointed that you spent your time. Avoid this by discussing the auditions with the actor's agent when you first meet.
❖ What Piques Your Interest In Me?
With hundreds of actors, how do you fit in with the agency? Inquire about your prospective agent's client list. You're unlikely to be added to an agency roster with someone who looks just like you but asks, regardless.
When two performers look very similar and are represented by the same agent, auditions can occasionally clash. You want to be the focus of your agent's attention, not your long-lost twin, even if they are a fantastic performer.
❖ How Involved Are You in the Industry?
Just because someone is a "talent agent" doesn't guarantee they are well-connected to the acting industry pros who can help you get hired. What distinguishes this agent from the hundreds of others in New York? It is critical to inquire about the agent's relationships and background, particularly with New York casting directors.
Many experienced agencies have relationships with casting directors and other industry experts, which can benefit both of you.
❖ How do you feel about me marketing myself on my submissions with your agency's name?
You'd think it would please any agent at any agency that their acting talent is attempting to further their careers, but it's not always the case. Acting agents and acting managers can be strange - they can be bossy and don't want you to put their name on stuff they don't authorize.
And, if you're new, they may strive to manage their "brand," ensuring that they are perceived in the manner they want to be seen.
Final Thoughts
These five questions can assist you to pile up information during your agency meeting. However, always ask as many questions as you need.
Prepare a few additional questions to show your new agent you're interested in them and to guarantee they'll work well with you once you join a meeting. Most crucial, trust your intuition at all times. Go with your gut instinct, whether it's good or negative.

Best headshots New York City
As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, I can't provide specific recommendations for the "Best" headshot photographers in New York City, as individual preferences and needs vary. However, I can offer some general advice on how to find a reputable and skilled headshot photographer in NYC:
Research and Reviews:
Look for photographers with positive reviews and testimonials from actors who have worked with them. Websites like Yelp, Google Reviews, and industry forums can be helpful.
Portfolio Review:
Examine the photographer's portfolio to get a sense of their style and the quality of their work. Ensure their style aligns with the type of headshots you're seeking.
Industry Reputation:
Check if the photographer has a good reputation within the acting community. Recommendations from fellow actors or industry professionals can be valuable.
Consultation:
Schedule a consultation with potential photographers to discuss your goals, expectations, and any specific requirements you may have. This will also allow you to get a feel for their personality and professionalism.
Ask Questions:
Don't hesitate to ask the photographer questions about their process, the number of looks they offer, retouching policies, and the delivery timeline. A transparent and open dialogue is essential.
Pricing:
While cost is a factor, it should not be the sole determining factor. Consider the overall value you'll receive, including the photographer's skill, experience, and the quality of the final product.
Referrals:
Seek recommendations from fellow actors, agents, or casting directors. They may have insights into photographers who have consistently produced excellent headshots.
Specialized in Acting Headshots:
Look for photographers who specialize in acting headshots. They understand the unique requirements of the industry and can capture shots that appeal to casting directors.
Social Media Presence:
Check the photographer's social media accounts for recent work and updates. This can give you a real-time sense of their activity and the types of clients they work with.
Professionalism:
Choose a photographer who demonstrates professionalism, responsiveness, and clear communication. A positive working relationship can contribute to a successful headshot session.
Remember to verify this information and check for any updates or changes in the photography scene in NYC, as the industry is dynamic and photographers' availability or reputation may evolve over time.
