the fucking arrogance and blatant nationalism in the way europeans declare polce brutality a "US problem" as if americans are the only people with a corrupt system
my leftist swedish mother actually agrees with ACAB with the addendum that it's only the Americans, we're not like that here
let the brutal forced used on greta thunberg, a swedish teenager protesting climate change, by dutch police be a testament to the lie of european "democracy" and how it is democracy in name and nothing else.
let the immigrant kids who are brutalized, humiliated and oppressed every day in sweden by cops who "protect and serve" serve as a reminder of how incredibly flawed we are.
let the 700% increase in death by cops in sweden in the last ten years show us how we are no better than the americans we condemn.
we are not better. you are buying into propaganda if you think this doesn't apply to your country too

Saw your requests were open and wanted to pop one in if that’s okay because of your latest one-shot of Dr Kry and his two daughters. Is it possible for you to do headcanons with Fem reader and Silas and how they interact with their daughters. I think you mentioned that Silas would have three daughters that unfortunately don’t know the names to with reader in one of your posts so I’m curious of the family dynamic. Which daughter has Silas’ favoritism? What do they look like? Which daughter inherited most of Silas’ traits and which inherited the most from reader? Are they yandere for their mother like their dad or act similarly like Nydia and Lydia? Or maybe it’s a mix between the sisters? I was hoping you would given a basic dive into their personalities and dynamics with Silas and Reader if you had some ideas! If this is too much , that’s fine! I was wondering if about this for a long time and took my chance when your requests were open.
Thank you for all that you do and love your works!!!💙💙💙
Yes, I have a planned oneshot with Silas kids:)
The thing with Silas’s daughters is that they're younger than the other OCs children. While the others are around 15—18, Emelie, Sierra and Darla are 14, 12 and 8 (I think, I don't remember exactly what ages I put for them) so their understanding for the world and their fathers yandere tendencies might not be as prominent as with the older kids.
But Silas does not favor his kids like Kry, he loves them all equally. I don't really like to set characteristics for the children because they're supposed to be half "yours", and I don't know how you look like. I have my views on how they look like, but I won't give any descriptions. All I can say, because this is a dominant gene, is that in my head they have brown hair and brown eyes.
These girls will probably not be a platonic yandere for their mother like Ludwig is, but I think that Silas’s overprotectiveness can have rubbed off on them. Emelie, the oldest, has the best view of what's going on around them so she is the most comprehensive. She would be the most cautious, knowing that they can't do certain things because of how their father is, and that they shouldn't tell people their names etc. She would look after the younger two, and you, almost acting like a little adult, but I feel like she would be quite bitter because she doesn't like the tension between her parents. She wants them to get along as a normal family, but they aren't a normal family, so they can't.
Basically, life with Silas and kids are quite loving. He loves to be a father and would kill for his daughters. He spoils them, let's them do any extra curricular they want (I feel like one of them would like horses, ballet and some sports) and would be a very present dad, honestly.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday in Chile that it was imperative for the United States to declassify documents that could shed light on Washington’s involvement in the South American country’s 1973 coup.
“The transparency of the United States could present an opportunity for a new phase in our relationship between the United States and Chile,” Ocasio-Cortez said in Spanish in a video posted on Instagram alongside Camila Vallejo, the spokesperson for the left-leaning government of President Gabriel Boric.
The Democratic congresswoman from New York is part of a delegation of lawmakers who traveled to the capital of Santiago ahead of the 50th anniversary of the coup against President Salvador Allende on Sept. 11, 1973.
The delegation had first traveled to Brazil and will now go to Colombia, both of which are also ruled by left-leaning governments.
The goal of the trip was to “start to change … the relationships between the United States and Chile and the region, Latin America as a whole,” Ocasio-Cortez said outside the Museum of Memory and Human Rights that remembers the victims of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, who ruled from 1973 to 1990.
“It’s very important to frame the history of what happened here in Chile with Pinochet’s dictatorship. And also to acknowledge and reflect on the role of the United States in those events,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Ocasio-Cortez said she has introduced legislation to declassify documents related to Chile’s coup and Vallejo said a similar request had been made by the Chilean government.
“In Chile as well, a similar request was made … that aims to declassify documents from the Nixon administration, particularly certain testimonies from the CIA director. This is to attain a clearer understanding of what transpired and how the United States was involved in the planning of the civil and military coup, and the subsequent years that followed,” Vallejo said. “This is very important for our history.”
U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, a Democrat from Texas, said after the delegation’s approximately hourlong visit to the museum in Santiago that it was important to recognize the “truth” that “the United States was involved with the dictatorship and the coup.”
“So that’s why we’re here,” Casar said in Spanish to journalists, “to acknowledge the truth, to begin a new future.”
U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro from Texas said the visit to the museum was a reminder that it was important “to make sure that a tragedy and a horror like this never, ever happens again in Chile or in Latin America or anywhere else around the world.”
Earlier in the day, the delegation also met with Santiago Mayor Irací Hassler.
Reps. Nydia Velázquez of New York and Maxwell Frost of Florida also traveled to South America as part of the delegation sponsored by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a Washington-based think tank.

This poem is exclusive to my Iced Teas (5$) patrons. The reason why I wrote this is very clear. I wrote this in response to this quote from Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments by Saidiya Hartman: "Du Bois feared that "armies of black prostitutes" and "undetected prostitutes" passing for regular women were overtaking the race, such women figured prominently in his anxieties about the future."
Okay you might know my emotional and psychic response to that. And so I wrote my poetic response to that.

Those photographs above best visually describe the poem. Here are some excerpts to whet your appetite:
Many prostitutes slipped into
the egg white of translucent carelessness;
the simultaneity of the dancer and the beat. There is always a future to hold.
and
As of late, bronze sandpaper;
which means touch, which means kneeling.
Nobody prays like they do;
a withdrawn lover,
a gashing breast.
and
Red roses and a bracing waist;
the beginning of a wounded romance,
the pearls soured by tears.
Murdered rooms from which vaporous voices excavate

After seeing it all over my dash for years, I will be watching “What We Do In The Shadows” for the first time!
Things I know
1) Goofy vampires failing to blend in to society
2) Why are they Russian?
3) They wear a lot of furs (Or maybe just Nandor?)
4) Guillermo becomes awesome
5) Nandor is hilarious
6) Nadia seems hilarious too (Natasha? Is her name Nydia?)
7) Guillermo and Nandor start out as servant/master but end up a couple I think???
8) “The Superb Owl”
9) I know Nandor has a goofy alter ego who he thinks is normal with a name like “Johnny Magnificent” or something like that
10) “New York CITAY” (that’s Nandor, right?)
11) There’s a normal bald guy in a sweater, I’m unsure how he fits into any of this? He reminds me of Toby from “The Office” so I already feel bad for him
12) Also I could have sworn there was a movie too, but I’m not finding it, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The tag for my liveblogging and WWDITS related posts will be #altowwdits if any followers want to mute it or any vampire fans want to watch me go into this blind haha

cairn, the wizard who wields light magic (aka they do funky stuff with light (it's technically sunlight magic too but I still have to flesh out the entire magic system deal))
there's also nydia. used to be a wizard before her death too, but hey, now that she's technically a ghost possessing cairn (to find out stuff about her death and all), she can somewhat use her own magic w/ cairn's form
for this week, i'm planning to actually set up/flesh out the story and stuff before actually making another interactive story. this time it's a fantasy + mystery one (it might take longer than a single week since I haven't really written a mystery story, unless my memory messes that up)
previous post of cairn + nydia doodle + barebones stuff for the "fantasy mystery interactive story with wizards and magic" story

Mini Concrete Plant Project Cost
The mini concrete plant project cost varies according to a variety of factors, including equipment size, configuration, brand, technical level and regional differences. Generally speaking, the mixing productivity of mini mix concrete plant is about 25-60m3/h, and the price of a set of mini concrete batching plant is between 50,000 dollars and 500,000 dollars, and the specific price should also be determined according to the specific needs and configuration.
Equipment size and configuration are important factors affecting the mini concrete plant project cost. The larger the equipment size and the higher the configuration, the cost will increase accordingly. For example, some small concrete batching plant may only have the basic mixing function, while the more advanced configuration may include automation control system, more accurate measuring device, etc., which will increase the cost of the mini mix concrete plant equipment.
Brand and quality are also key factors in determining price of mini concrete plant. Well-known brands and high-quality equipment are usually more expensive, but they tend to be more assured in terms of performance, stability and durability. Therefore, when choosing a mini concrete batching plant, you need to consider a number of factors such as brand, quality as well as price.
In addition, regional differences will also have an impact on the price of the mini concrete mixing plant. The level of economic development in different regions, market demand and transportation costs and other factors may lead to price differences. Generally speaking, the price of the mini concrete batching plant in coastal cities or first-tier cities may be relatively high, while the price in inland areas or economically relatively backward areas may be lower.
Finally, the exact price needs to be negotiated and confirmed according to the market situation at the time of purchase. It is recommended to consult and compare with multiple suppliers to get more accurate price information and the equipment configuration that best meets your needs.
It should be noted that in addition to the mini concrete plant project cost, the installation, commissioning, training and post maintenance costs of the mini concrete mixing plant also need to be considered. Therefore, these additional cost expenditures should be fully considered when budgeting. If you want to get the detailed establish cost of a mini mix concrete plant, please send us email, we will send the quotation in detail in 24 hours.

Amusing point by National Review
Senator Richard Blumenthal (Conn.) and other Senate Democrats are broaching an uncomfortable suggestion: Sonia Sotomayor should retire while the party still has the White House and 51 senators. They have a point, if a coldly calculating one: Sotomayor, who will turn 70 in June, may not be that old, but she requires a nurse to travel with her, and it could be years before Democrats have both the presidency and the Senate majority again. If Republicans were to replace Sotomayor with a conservative, they’d have a seven-justice bloc that could take a very long time to flip back to majority-liberal. But Supreme Court justices do not like to be told what to do, and identity politics is impeding Machiavellianism. Representative Nydia Velázquez (D., N.Y.), for example, railed against “forcing the only Latina on the Court to retire.” Pressure from the White House is unlikely because it would require Joe Biden’s team to acknowledge his vulnerability in this election—and the actuarial tables.
Let me know how that works out for you....

Kill a few people, destroy a bridge on an interstate, and people will notice
The FBI has opened a federal criminal probe into the March 26 bridge collapse in Maryland, the Washington Post reported on Monday, citing two U.S. officials familiar with the matter. The investigation will at least partly focus on the Dali cargo ship and whether its crew left the port in Baltimore knowing the ship had serious problems with its systems, the Post said. Representatives for the FBI could not be immediately reached to comment on the report.*** https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/maryland-bridge-collapse/2024/04/15/id/1161028

What's the worst that could happen with bail reform? YOLO!!
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — More details are coming out after Memphis Police Officer Joseph McKinney was shot and killed while responding to a call early Friday morning.  According to court records, the man accused of killing him had previously been released from jail on felony charges without bail by a Shelby County judge. 18-year-old Jaylen Lobley was identified by the Memphis Police Association as the suspect who was shot and killed early Friday morning after Memphis Police said he shot and killed Officer McKinney, also shooting two other MPD officers in the incident.  Interim Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis said the suspect shot McKinney and the two other officers with a Glock switch, a device that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully-automatic sub-machine gun.  Lobley was arrested in March 2024 for possessing such a switch while stealing a car, admitting to stealing both an Infiniti Q50 and Dodge Charger, reported stolen March 2 and March 3 respectively.  Officers found the handgun after arresting him on March 5. The 18-year-old told investigators he took the gun from a car he was trying to steal about six months prior.  He was charged with two counts of motor vehicle theft, unlawful possession of a weapon, prohibited weapon and two counts of vandalism. On March 7, Lobley was released on his own recognizance — with conditions that included agreeing to weekly call-ins and curfew — approved by the General Sessions court. However, the judge who released the suspect without bond was not named in the Shelby County judicial system. *** https://www.localmemphis.com/article/news/crime/man-mpd-officer-killed-shooting-released-from-jail-by-shelby-county-judge/522-42482bcb-d8b3-4124-a32c-855c48a807f1

Shotguns make great attention getters
A group of thieves smashed up an Oakland jewelry store, stealing valuables from the broken glass cases before a man with a shotgun chased them off ... and, it was all caught on video. Eight people ran into Phuong Jewelry in Oakland's Chinatown neighborhood Wednesday ... bashing cases with hammers and making off with a ton of the store's pieces. Check out the vid ... the first person walks in holding what appears to be a gun and aiming it at the store's owner, Diane Trinh, and another person, forcing them to drop to the ground -- before the other assailants start to smash in the cases. After a few seconds, Diane runs to the back to get her 76-year-old husband ... who comes into the store with his own gun, chasing off the robbers who'd already grabbed a ton of jewelry. Diane and her son, Tony, spoke with KGO-TV about the attack ... reportedly telling the outlet the robbers made off with between 85-90% of their inventory in the quick strike.*** https://www.tmz.com/2024/04/12/oakland-robbers-ransack-jewelry-store-wild-video-shows-crime-gun/

bootcamp leave
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - A member of the United States Marine Corps has been arrested and charged with several jewelry store heists after investigators say he stole more than a half million dollars worth of expensive goods.*** "He was being taken into custody and his dog tags fell out. He did tell us he was in the U.S. military," says Constable Herman. Marcelo Hernandez is just 18 years old. Investigators say Hernandez would wear black and burst into these stores overnight when they were closed. Yurman was hit days after the young Marine returned to town. "Actually, he just recently finished his boot camp in the Marine Corps about a week before one of our cases," the Constable adds. When the teenager was arrested, Constable Herman said three handguns, $11,000 in cash, and $500,000 worth of jewelry including diamonds and other precious stones were found in his car, a Mercedes-Benz GLA.*** https://www.fox26houston.com/news/u-s-marine-arrested-for-several-jewelry-store-heists

You may think you went to a bad public HS, but
HOUSTON - A Houston teen and her mother spoke exclusively to FOX 26 after seeing Kedria Grigsby, a former Klein ISD cosmetology teacher, was arrested for solicitation of prostitution and sex trafficking on April 8. The young woman, who we'll refer to as Jane Doe, says she was a victim in the 2022 case that led to the arrest of Grigsby's son, Roger Magee, on similar charges and would interact with Grigsby often during her time with Magee. Doe, who was 15-years-old at the time, says she met Magee through a mutual friend while out shopping and told her Magee would take care of her and give her money. "She left out the part that I had to sell my body," she said. "When he (Magee) picked me up from the front of my apartment, he was running everything down to me. He basically told me I had no way out." Doe said she started out walking along the Bissonett track with other prostitutes. A week later, her pictures were placed on websites. She and two other young women would each have sex with at least 10 different men each night in various hotels, one of them being Hotel Royale off FM 1960. The young woman says she and her mother were arguing at the time of her disappearance. Oct. 7 2022 was the last time her mom says she heard from her. While searching, she gained access to her daughter's Instagram messages and reached out to a man she'd never seen before.*** [When people complained, the school district] said those claims were false. A spokesperson from the district stated they immediately contacted the Sheriff's office after the complaint was filed last year, and were told by investigators that Grigsby was not a suspect. They also stated action was immediately taken after Grigsby was arrested on April 8, and they take matters involving their students very seriously. Similar statements were made in a Friday morning email to all Klein ISD parents. "Kedria Grigsby continued to have a clear background check and clear criminal record until she was arrested on Monday, April 8, 2024," Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown stated in the message. "We will continue working with the Harris County Sheriff's Office in their ongoing investigation, and we implore the criminal justice system to take every appropriate action to protect our children."*** https://www.fox26houston.com/news/houston-teen-victim-former-klein-isd-teacher-son-sex-trafficking-case

Alec, you're next
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer sentenced Hannah Gutierrez Reed to 18 months in prison after a jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The "Rust" armorer was responsible for the firearms on the Western film set where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed on Oct. 21, 2021. Hutchins had been preparing a close-up shot when a gun Alec Baldwin was holding discharged. The 18-month sentence was the maximum time Gutierrez Reed could serve. She has currently spent about a month behind bars.*** Sommer slammed Gutierrez Reed's jailhouse calls, pointing out that the armorer spoke to someone about how "this is messing up her modeling career."*** Special prosecutors included summaries of Gutierrez Reed's phone calls in which she referred to the jury as "f---ing idiots." "Hannah says the jury was so f---ing stupid and they couldn't tell what was happening," Kari Morrissey wrote. "She calls the jury f---ing idiots."*** The prosecution largely focused on Gutierrez Reed's behavior as an armorer, alleging she didn't do her job correctly. "Hannah Gutierrez knew that Baldwin was loose. She knew it," Morrissey said during closing arguments. "She didn't do anything about it, even though it was her job. It was her job. It is her job to say to an A-list actor, if, in fact, that's what you want to call him, 'Hey, you can't behave that way with those firearms.' That is her job. That is what they pay her for. That is the job that she applied for. That is the job that she accepted."***

About time
The Federal Bureau of Prisons is closing a women’s prison in California infamous for rampant sexual abuse against inmates. Federal Correctional Institution Dublin is set to close due to a violent reputation that contributed to its nickname as the “rape club,” the embattled BOP announced. The Associated Press exposed the prison’s problems in an investigation that revealed “rampant sexual abuse by correctional officers and even the warden,” where inmates said they “were often threatened or punished when they tried to speak up.”  Other issues such as hazardous mold, asbestos, and poor medical care, also plagued the prison.  Despite the federal agency’s attempted rehabilitation of the facility, which included moves to “address culture, recruitment and retention, aging infrastructure — and most critical — employee misconduct,” it still chose to close the prison. “Despite these steps and resources, we have determined that FCI Dublin is not meeting expected standards and that the best course of action is to close the facility,” BOP Director Colette Peters said in a statement to the outlet. “This decision is being made after ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of those unprecedented steps and additional resources.”***

California, not surprising
For a state that wishes to be one of the nation’s agenda-setters and serve as a model for the country, California is woefully weak when it comes to protecting children from sex crimes. GOP state Sen. Shannon Grove has introduced a bill that would make it a felony to purchase or solicit a child for sex. As you can assume based on that sentence, purchasing a child for sex in California is just a misdemeanor right now, with a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a fine of $10,000. Grove’s bill would make it a felony punishable by up to four years in prison and a $25,000 fine, and it would require offenders to register as sex offenders for 10 years. Efforts to do this have failed in California since 2014, meaning that for the past decade, California has considered the possibility of upgrading purchasing a child for sex to a felony and chosen against it. Even now, Grove said she is getting pushback from state legislators who are worried about giving more prison time to people who are found guilty of purchasing a child for sex.*** https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/beltway-confidential/2966768/why-is-california-so-slow-to-protect-children-from-sex-crimes/

Free Press makes good points
It’s been a week since we published NPR veteran Uri Berliner’s essay detailing how the broadcaster has lost its way, and the fallout continues. NPR CEO Katherine Maher is still being haunted by her old tweets. A former senior NPR executive has said Berliner identified a “real problem.” And yesterday, NPR’s own media reporter revealed that Berliner was suspended without pay for a week and issued a “final warning” as punishment for writing for The Free Press. Oh, and the (second?) richest man in the world is keeping tabs.  The ongoing saga at NPR is of a piece with a growing closed-mindedness across the West, as are two other stories this week, one in Brussels and one at USC in L.A. Let’s start with Brussels, where police yesterday shut down a gathering of prominent European right-wingers after the local mayor banned the event to “ensure public security.”
continues
Speakers at the National Conservatism Conference included Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, Brexit standard-bearer Nigel Farage, French politician Éric Zemmour, and Suella Braverman, who was, until recently, Britain’s home secretary. In other words, this was not a group of brownshirted goons planning a street fight, but major figures on the European political right, ranging from the mainstream to the more radical.  In a farcical-sounding standoff, a group of cops entered the event as Farage was speaking, then retreated. It was less of a shutdown and more a blockade: attendees were banned from entering or reentering. By all accounts, there was no violence, but a mighty media scrum at the door, major disruption, and understandably outraged attendees trapped in the building.    Look at any case of contemporary censorship and you will almost always find the same justification for silencing an unwelcome voice—safety. The rationale will invariably be light on specific threats—and is, in reality, a cowardly cover for an ulterior motive.
continues
Yoram Hazony, the event’s organizer, said there was “no threat to public order” at the gathering. And I believe him. Belgian authorities have cited no specific threats. And as someone who has covered National Conservatism gatherings in the past, I find the idea that this tweedy crowd would get into any scraps difficult to believe. The only risk to my safety was nearly dying of boredom at a breakout session on common good constitutionalism.  But of course, public safety isn’t what this is really about. Hazony’s event was targeted because of objections to the ideas being discussed there.  Hazony takes it as a sign that he and his ideological comrades are onto something. “They tried to shut down this conference because they know that national conservatism is the greatest threat to the totalitarian, liberal NGO-cracy in Brussels,” he told The Free Press. (Note how such bans flatter the ideas they target: NatCon opponents should be among those most frustrated by this censorship.)
continues
The second day of the conference is due to take place today and Hazony was adamant that the show would go on. “NatCon Brussels will continue undeterred.” Ayaan Hirsi Ali notes that Emir Kir, the mayor who ordered police to shut down the event, is no stranger to extremism. He was expelled from Belgium’s Socialist Party after he met with a delegation that included representatives of a far-right, ultra-nationalist Turkish party.  Hazony’s politics could hardly be more different to those of Asna Tabassum, an undergraduate at the University of Southern California, but she faced the same cowardly excuse for censorship this week: “safety.”
continues
Tabassum was selected as USC’s valedictorian, but as well as having a top-notch GPA, Tabassum appears to possess some, shall we say, robust views on Israel. Several student groups complained about her selection and pointed out that Tabassum’s Instagram bio links to a post full of noxious anti-Israel rhetoric, including a description of Zionism as a “racist settler-colonial ideology”—in other words, the sort of thing professors are teaching college kids at top schools across the country. One group, Trojans for Israel, said that by choosing Tabassum as valedictorian, USC had turned commencement into an “unwelcoming and intolerant environment for Jewish graduates and their families.”  USC is not famous for its commitment to free expression—it once suspended a professor for simply saying a Chinese word that sounded like a racial slur. And the school had a decision to make. Administrators could have said they had made a mistake in picking Tabassum because her views were at odds with USC’s values and stripped her of the role. Or they could have stuck by Tabassum and ridden out an uncomfortable commencement day in the name of free speech. Instead, they opted for a weaselly fudge, keeping Tabassum as valedictorian but preventing her from speaking.
continues
“Tradition must give way to safety,” said Provost Andrew T. Guzman in a letter to the USC community. It made references to the “alarming tenor” of the response to Tabassum’s selection and “substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement” but was light on specifics.  Tabassum called the decision “cowardly” and accused the school of “succumbing to a campaign of hate meant to silence my voice.”  USC had no constitutional obligation to select Tabassum as valedictorian. It does have a duty to be straight with students and faculty about its decision-making.
continues
Alex Morey, director of campus rights advocacy at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), told The Free Press she thought USC’s decision was “a very calculated move” designed “to avoid censoring the student or yanking her valedictorian status, instead blaming ‘safety concerns.’ ”  “The suggestion is that authorities are concerned about true threats, but rarely is that the case,” says Morey. “If there are genuine safety concerns that local authorities simply can’t handle, the school must be as transparent as possible. The alternative is that they end up looking like censors trying to cover their tracks. That, of course, can chill campus speech.”  In Brussels and Los Angeles, the targets of censorship could not have been more different. But the insincere justification was the same. ***

→ Why I fear FISA—and you should too: The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, is facing fresh scrutiny on the Hill as lawmakers consider its renewal. FISA is touted as a vital tool for national security. Its use, we’re told, is to gather intelligence on foreign governments and terrorist organizations to prevent another 9/11 from happening. That is all true. But the law has also enabled government agencies to wiretap and collect vast amounts of data on American citizens without any real oversight or transparency.  Last week, the House of Representatives voted not just to renew but vastly expand these surveillance powers, reauthorizing Section 702, which will enable the collection of communications of noncitizens located outside the U.S. without a warrant. It might seem like a common sense measure in theory, but in practice the FBI has misused its authority from Section 702 hundreds of thousands of times, targeting everyone from BLM protesters to January 6 rioters.  It gets worse. The proposed Turner-Himes amendment would allow, with very few exceptions, the government to compel any entity or business with “access to equipment that is being or may be used to transmit or store wire or electronic communications,” to fork over data. Have a phone or a Wi-Fi router? Sorry! You’re now obligated to help the federal government spy on Americans.  Even if you’re not too worried about the pesky Fourth Amendment, you should know that this law will continue to be used against American protesters, journalists, and political actors. If this vote passes the Senate and is signed into law by President Biden, we all have good reason to be afraid. —Isaac Grafstein ***

A transgender woman who identifies as a vampire has been convicted of sexually assaulting a developmentally disabled girl — while already under investigation for allegedly strangling a man “possessed by a demon.” Adam Hetke, 35, who goes by the name “Sabrina,” was convicted in Wisconsin last week of first-degree sexual assault by threatening the use of a dangerous weapon and second-degree assault of a mentally ill victim, GMToday reported. Hetke was already a convicted sex offender — and under investigation for a homicide, with charges only filed since the disturbed attacker was busted for the sex assault. Hetke met her latest known victim — a 16-year-old girl with cognitive disabilities — at a gas station in July 2021, went to her home and sexually assaulted her while threatening to use a knife, according to the outlet. The girl said Hetke “told her that he was a vampire and that he would bite her if she didn’t do what he wanted,” according to a criminal complaint cited by GMToday that did not use the abuser’s preferred pronouns. The convicted sex offender, who was released from prison in November 2020, also faces charges in an open homicide case in Milwaukee, GMToday reported. She was arrested on a tentative charge of first-degree intentional homicide in the April 2021 death of Vydale Thompson-Moody, a 28-year-old who had a cognitive disability, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The victim was strangled with a cord inside a home in the Concordia neighborhood on Milwaukee’s west side, the news outlet reported.*** https://nypost.com/2024/04/16/us-news/trans-woman-who-identifies-as-vampire-sexually-assaulted-teen-charged-in-death-of-disabled-man/

Cell phone videos are evidence
A North Carolina high school student was charged after he allegedly slapped his teacher multiple times during a viral profanity-laced classroom rant earlier this week. The rage-filled youngster, identified only as a minor, confronted the educator inside Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, where he violently attacked her, according to video posted to social media. After the initial impact, the teacher seemed unfazed by the slap as the student continued to run his mouth.*** “The f–k’s wrong with you, what you gonna do, still sit in that chair ’cause you a bitch. Ain’t nobody even coming, you got slapped,” says the student, seemingly singing and dancing. “Bitch go back to teaching.” Students behind the camera reacted to the slaps with laughter amid the classroom assault.*** He was charged with one count of communicating threats and two counts of misdemeanor assault, the Forsyth Sheriff’s Office announced.*** https://nypost.com/2024/04/17/us-news/north-carolina-high-school-student-charged-with-assault-after-slapping-teacher/

→ Antisemitism and ‘Liquid Ass’ at Columbia: Columbia’s president Minouche Shafik and other university leaders were called to Washington yesterday to testify on how the school has become one of the country’s worst “hotbeds” of antisemitism. *** Lawmakers at the hearing also tackled the alleged “chemical attack” on anti-Israel protesters on Columbia’s campus in January. Victims claimed they had been attacked by fellow students with ties to the IDF, who they alleged used a chemical weapon called “skunk.” The Intercept jumped on the story, reporting that dozens of students said they experienced “burning eyes, nausea, headaches, abdominal and chest pain, and vomiting” in the wake of the “attack.” But in a lawsuit filed against the school on Tuesday, one of the students suspended for the alleged attack stated the smell came not from a “toxic chemical substance,” as Rep. Ilhan Omar described it, but rather from a “fart spray” purchased on Amazon called, um, Liquid Ass. ***

FBI needed another black eye
The Department of Justice is close to reaching a settlement with the sexual abuse victims of former U.S. gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. According to the Wall Street Journal, the DOJ is expected to pay roughly $100 million to 100 victims of Nassar. The settlement was reportedly reached last fall, but the details are still being finalized. The settlement is in response to administrative tort claims filed by the gymnasts over the FBI’s failure to properly investigate the abuse claims against Nassar.*** Among Nassar’s victims included in the settlement with the FBI are star gymnasts Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Maggie Nichols, and Aly Raisman. Nassar abused dozens of gymnasts over his decadeslong career. Michigan State, the U.S. women’s national gymnastics team, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, and the FBI were heavily criticized for covering up or failing to address complaints properly. The Justice Department’s inspector general found several failures in the FBI’s handling of the investigation, with Indianapolis agents failing on multiple levels.*** https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2970224/doj-nearing-settlement-victims-larry-nassar-fbi-failures/

The House passed a bill from Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) on Wednesday that prohibits the federal government from purchasing U.S. citizens’ data from third parties, a win for privacy hawks that brings an end to House Republicans’ uphill battle to renew the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The bill, introduced by Davidson and House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerry Nadler (R-NY), would force federal agencies to obtain a court order to purchase commercially owned data of U.S. citizens, such as their online activity and location information. It was championed by Judiciary Committee members and their allies as an amendment to Section 702 of FISA, but it failed to make it into the final legislation that passed last week. A vote on Davidson’s amendment comes after months of infighting within the Republican Party over how to reform the key surveillance program, with House Judiciary and House Intelligence Committees at the center of the arguments. *** https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/house/2969992/house-fisa-saga-passage-fourth-amendment-not-for-sale-act/

this episode made me love kipperlilly
i think it is very important to remember that kipperlilly copperkettle is a child. she's 16 years old and being manipulated by an authority figure who she should've been able to trust
yes, she was angry and jealous and immature before allying with ankarna. but she was also a 14 year old girl with anger issues
as a person who has had anger issues my whole life and was very violent as a child, i fully feel for kipperlilly. i was literally the worst version of myself when i was 14. i was rude and mean and had shitty opinions and i hurt people. i was truly awful, like genuinely bigoted and just hateful. i'm still trying to forgive myself for some of the things i did because it wasn't fucking okay.
i got out of that headspace thanks to my friends, and i ended up losing a lot of them along the way, deservedly so. im 18 now, im better and still bettering myself, and i cannot in good conscience hate kipperlilly any more than i can hate my young self
she's a kid. she's an angry little girl who instead of getting the support and help she needed to be able to better herself(bc jawbone is not able to treat her like she deserves), she was tricked and presumably killed by jace stardiamond so that he could use her to resurrect a dead rage god. she has done truly terrible things but she is a child and isn't irredeemable.
i honestly didn't see myself in her before, because our expressions of rage are completely different(hers is more passive aggressive, im more loud and outright aggressive), but this episode made her on of my favorite npcs ever.
she's a kid, and she's wrong and immature and a total asshole who thinks she's so fucking righteous standing on her stupid fucking high horse claiming "fairness" and all that bullshit. she's so realistic and awful and i know that makes her worse to most people but to me it just makes me think of another shitty teenager who was just as bad(minus a few murders) and 100% convinced she was righteous and justified in all her horrible actions.
i love kipperlilly, and i have faith in her. if there was a chance for me there's a chance for her, and when that chance presents itself i hope she takes it

Writing The Manuscript
In terms of sourcing text, I opted for writing the manuscript myself, as this would be the only way to cohesively talk about a range of designers and their works.
I created an online resource called The Daily Graphic, which inspires and equips other designers to do work that matters. I have written numerous posts for TDG, and I thought if I wrote the manuscript for the book I would also be able to use that content for The Daily Graphic.
The way I chose to do it was to pick the designers I wanted to showcase, and write 400 words approx. per designer/project sharing my thoughts on their design process and deliverables, and giving observations for how others might be able to adopt aspects of their processes.
On top of this, I wrote a blurb, an introduction, a concluding message, and an ‘about the author’ paragraph.
This added up to being over 3000 words, which met the criteria for me to start designing with the content.
Here is the manuscript
Blurb
As the climate change crisis grows, so does the need for designers to make an impact. ‘We Are The Designers’ is a showcase of designers doing just that, with work ranging from unique typefaces to experimental photographic series. This book is intended to inspire designers to make a difference with their own work.
The brief is clear…
Mother Nature is the client.
The World is the audience.
Climate Change is the problem.
We are the designers.
About the Author
Connor Goldie is a design practitioner, researcher, and writer from Auckland, New Zealand. He is the founder of an online resource called “The Daily Graphic”, a platform that inspires and equips designers to make an impact with their work.
Outside of the world of design, he loves to travel and spend time with his fiance, and make art.
He has hopes of building a creative studio nestled in the trees with his wife-to-be, where they can continue to design, write, create, and inspire others.
Introduction
Graphic design is more than pixels on a screen, or ink on a page. It is the art form that bridges the gap between raw information and those that need to receive it. When a designer truly understands this to their core, they cannot ignore the voice in their mind urging them to use their skill to communicate information in the ways that the world most needs it.
That urge is what drove the creatives in this book to make the work they did, responding to the climate change crisis. Johan Elmehag, Egle Plytnikaite, Christoph Sarow, Nydia Lilian, Sergi Bayés, and Carla Cabras all took on the challenge of producing work that stirs conversation, educates, or proposes change.
This book will take you through examples ranging from typefaces, to publications, to posters, to photographic experimentations. Each of them is different from the last in visual aesthetic, but all have a common goal.
I encourage you to read this book closely. Read it through an analytical lens – Noticing the designers’ approaches, and making connections. Keep pen and paper close by, ready to brainstorm and ideate on how you might approach this topic yourself.
The brief has been set. Mother Nature is the client. The World is the audience. Climate Change is the problem. We are the designers.
Will you respond?
A-Z: Coast to Coast Shore to Shore.
Malmö University design graduate Johan Elmehag is the designer of a publication and typeface titled A-Z: Coast to Coast Shore to Shore. Through the creation of a typeface, the publication manifests the geographical effect of climate change. Each letter is based on a place and is followed by information about how a specific region will be impacted by rising sea levels. The idea arose from the realisation that climate change is an intimidating and esoteric issue that is often difficult to discuss and express to readers. The shape of coastal regions based on future forecasts of when all of the world's ice has melted is used to generate each of the book's core letters. Elmehag followed a research led design process, which involved utilising an interactive mapping application and National Geographic statistics when studying and developing the work.
The letters show the areas that will be most affected if all the world's ice melts. ‘O’, for example, imagines a future where the Black Sea connects to the Caspian Sea. ‘U’ shows how Mexico will split into two because of rising sea levels. The outline of ‘Q’ shows a new island that would emerge from what is currently the Kathiawar peninsula in Northern India.
In Elmehag’s words: “Since the topic of climate change is an uncomfortable one, I knew I needed to make a curious artefact, where a reader’s intrigue would outweigh their fear of the content.” He goes on to say: “An A-Z, which is so familiar, makes the subject feel less dramatic and alienating. I decided an ABC book might make the reader more open to unpleasant information.”
This work demonstrates a great mindset to have as a designer: To realise that it is our responsibility as designers to make information accessible. Even better if the work goes further than that, and provokes those who interact with it to take action.
Elmehag's book is available from Draw Down Books, and the typeface is on his website and available for download.
Environmental Issues Posters
Egle Plytnikaite is a Lithuanian designer, illustrator and creative, based in Vilnius. She takes the authenticity found in vintage work and implements it into her modern aesthetic, producing work that is vibrant, minimal, and communicative. Egle's mission as an illustrator is to produce eye catching work that challenges your world view.
One of her works that is certainly both eye catching, and world-view-challenging, is her environmental issues poster series, an editorial project for The Global Goals and United Nations. Each poster takes a single issue related to climate change, and uses surrealism to communicate it. They feature minimal colour palettes, clear focal points, generous negative space, and subtle vintage textures.
My personal favourite in her series is titled ‘Water Bottle Pollution’. The graphic follows the KISS formula (keep it simple, stupid!) fluently. She made the image easily consumable by using as little elements as possible. The bottle was set as the focal point, as established by the clear hierarchy of the illustration, and draws the viewer down toward the face. The face is indicated by a white silhouette, contrasting the flat red background. The poster is successful because of the way it bluntly and quickly illustrates what is happening when you buy and drink from single use plastic bottles, without the need for typography to explain. It brings a relevant issue to light that a viewer can actually do something about, which is important in tackling the climate change crisis.
Something this series does well is that each poster provokes curiosity. People don’t necessarily listen if they have been explicitly told what to do, rather if the viewer has to go on their own journey of discovery, they feel as though they have arrived at the way of thinking themself and are more enthusiastic about acting on it. Take her poster ‘Driving the Tsunami’ for example. The illustration on its own doesn’t demand anything of the viewer. In fact, it isn’t clear what the poster is even about just by looking at it. The viewer is drawn in by the interesting graphic, and has to find the answer themself. Once they do, they subconsciously feel like they are more knowledgeable than most on the topic, which draws a stronger connection between them and the design.
Egle has a distinct illustrative style, made up of simple colours, silhouettes, minimal elements, raw textures, surrealism and conceptual ideas. This formula has proven to be a successful way of communicating issues and persuading change in the climate change crisis.
Learn from Egle’s approach to design. Take some time to reflect, and ask yourself…
How can I draw on methods like surrealism to spark curiosity?
How can I lead a viewer on a journey to arrive at the point I am trying to make?
How can I incorporate the KISS rule better in my work?
Sahara Solar Panels
Christoph Sarow is an illustrator, animation director, and storyboard artist living in Berlin. One of his notable works addressing climate change is his Sahara Solar Panels project.
TED-Ed’s ‘Why don’t we cover the desert with solar panels?’ is an educational animation supporting a voice over by Dan Kwartler. The video uses the question ‘why don’t we cover the desert with solar panels?’ as a springboard to discuss how solar panels can be used in both large and small scales, what the issues and benefits are, and if solar is the answer to keeping up with “humanity’s rising energy use.” The work has several accreditations, but the striking visual style, illustration work, direction, storyboard design, and even a lot of the animation is thanks to German designer Christoph Sarow.
Christoph was tasked with making a complex issue easy to interpret through the means of illustration and animation. His approach was playful, cartoonish and other worldly, allowing the creative freedom to exaggerate scale and physics to clearly illustrate the points Dan Kwartler was trying to make. This methodology led to an end result that is both educational, and tremendously engaging to watch.
The design makes use of a versatile and distinct colour palette, which is relevant to the content of the video. Grainy textures and brush strokes give a strong sense of authenticity and character, and creates depth in the imagery. Christoph approached the animation like an illustrator – with each scene being a moving illustration that is simultaneously successful as a still image. His process started with storyboarding, planning how the scenes would flow into each other and how each scene could best illustrate the audio from Dan Kwartler.
Something I admire about Christoph’s approach to designing for climate change, is that he refrained from using shock value – a technique that is frequently overused in this space. He did quite the opposite. His approach wasn’t to make a consumer feel guilty about something terrible that they have little influence over, instead he seeked to entertain and educate. This approach is admirable, as it is a path less travelled. However, it works because it gives the viewer a sense of competency. The person watching the animation is left feeling like they now know something that they didn’t before, and are able to do something practical and partake in conversations to help make a difference in the climate change crisis.
When illustrating or designing deliverables in response to climate change, think about how you might be able to adopt some of Christoph’s approaches. Try picking a colour palette that is eye-catching and relevant to the content, exaggerating scale to create emphasis, incorporating texture, and telling a story.
End Times
Nydia Lilian is a photographer and visual artist in Monterrey, Mexico. Through her medium of photography, Nydia delves into the weird and wonderful characteristics of nature and our universe, and particularly explores “post-apocalyptic scenarios”. By combining other mediums with her photography, she is able to depict new worlds and other realities.
Nydia uses landscapes and experimental, abstract graphics as her primary subject matter. She attempts to use these as her basis for telling meaningful stories, moulding and refining the narrative with post editing techniques and creating surreal worlds.
Her photographic series, ‘End Times’, is a depiction of a possible post-apocalyptic environment in Monterrey, Mexico as a result of imprudent pollution. The series focuses on the implications of our behaviour and how long Monterrey can survive without changing its course. She used an “incandescent carbon” effect to produce the extreme look. Using a restricted palette of hot oranges, reds, yellows, and blacks, she is able to create a world that looks as though it is burning from the excessive rise in global temperatures, due to environmental neglect. She takes landscape photos of both urban and natural environments in the city as her subject matter, to give a wider picture of how the post apocalyptic world would look.
The work is jarring to look at, and that is the point. It makes you uncomfortable. Hopefully uncomfortable enough that you question how you are living, and whether you are contributing to this possible future. I have mentioned previously that I am not a fan of the use of shock value to coerce people. Nydia’s ‘End Times’, though, is in a sweet spot that reaps the benefits of shock value without the coercion. Without demanding anything, it simply illustrates what is going to happen if change doesn’t take place. It provokes the viewer to self-reflect, and arrive at their own conclusions of what changes they can make, as opposed to making someone feel guilty about a specific change they might not necessarily be able to make.
In your own work, consider how you might be able to find a sweet spot in making a viewer uncomfortable with what they are seeing, but without coming across as forceful or guilt-tripping. Think of how you can push your conceptual ideas to their limit and how you can refine your work by applying multiple mediums to your process. Try using a dramatic and limited colour palette to emphasise a particular message. These are methodologies that Nydia utilised in her response to designing for a climate change issue. Which ones will you use?
Plastic Waste Poster
A designer who took on the challenge of using his skills to address climate change is Spanish graphic designer, Sergi Bayés. His work features a modern, collage-like approach to layout and typography, incorporating mixed media to add depth. Sergi’s style translated well into his ‘Plastic Waste Poster.’ Sergi’s ‘Plastic Waste Poster’ is an infographic poster that highlights the highest plastic waste producing countries per person in the European Union. It seeks to raise awareness to how big of a problem plastic waste is in the European Union, and spark curiosity in a viewer for them to go on a journey of discovery, learning more about the climate change crisis.
His design process involved cutting up a used orange juice carton into shapes relative to how much plastic waste per person each corresponding country produces. He then applied ink to the cutouts, and stamped them onto a red paper background. This image was then scanned and brought into a digital workspace, where it served as the backdrop for the overlaid typography. Something unconventional about this process is that the background itself was treated not only as an important element in the design, but as the most crucial. Sergi flipped the standard poster design practice on its head. The analog, mixed media process in conjunction with the prioritisation of the background led to an end result with visual intrigue in every layer of the hierarchy.
Sergi’s approach to designing for climate change in this work was educational, intriguing, and memorable. A recipe for a successful design. The choice of using an unusual way to form the infographic shapes played into these aspects in a way that feels authentic and unique.
In your own design work, think of how you might be able to utilise a mixed media process that speaks to the topic of the design. Try tracing out objects, finger painting, or sellotaping leaves onto a paper. Get weird and creative because more often than not, it will lead to interesting results that you could have never initially imagined. Aim to be educational with your work, sparking curiosity with your designs.
Global Climate Change
Carla Cabras is an Italian designer from Sassari, who works primarily in publication design. One of her notable works is ‘Global Climate Change’.
Global Climate Change is an editorial project that aims to bridge the gap between raw data from Nasa and the general public. Carla Cabras designed the book to make the evidence and causes/effects for climate change apparent to the average reader.
The cover design utilises a bold, textural gradient which shifts from an ocean blue to a fiery red, serving as a metaphor for rising global temperatures. The metaphor is extended with repeating ellipses that change in scale to indicate our planet changing. Cabras shows storytelling in the cover design in a way that isn’t literal, which allows for a result that is more visually interesting and makes the viewer curious as to what is inside the book.
The design of the spreads in the book feature a lot of edge to edge satellite photographs, with text boxes layered on top explaining the images in regard to climate change. Some spreads showcase infographics and unconventionally shaped body copy. Continuity is kept throughout the book with a feathered orange to red gradient bordering each spread.
Cabras treated the book like an object, rather than an unplanned compilation of individual designs. This can be seen in the way that she continued the feathered gradient to the edge of the pages, so that the fore edge of the book reflects the bold gradient from orange to red.
Carla Cabras took on the task of becoming the catalyst for raw information to become clear communication. Her work, Global Climate Change, is educational, vibrant, editorial, and communicative.
In your own work for climate change, think about how you might be able to use repetition in your design to illustrate metaphors and create cohesion. Think of how you can tell a story without being literal. If you are designing a publication, treat it like the object that it is and design it as an experience, rather than a grouping of individual designs.
The Visual Exploration Book
Evelin Dankó is a Hungarian graphic designer and illustrator based in Budapest. Her work is playful, colourful, and illustrative, and largely consists of subject matter that reflects modern life.
Evelin Dankó’s work, ‘The Visual Exploration Book’, serves as a current reflection of the global climate change crisis. The publication consists of easy-to-interpret infographics on each spread addressing different facts and data. The Visual Exploration Book has been designed to provide specific advice on how individuals can make a difference in the climate change crisis in their own life.
The design of the book is striking and impactful, mostly drawing on a minimal, high contrast palette of red, blue, white and black. Evelin decided to make each individual fact/statistic as understandable as possible by reserving the entirety of each spread to a single infographic. The cover design simply states ‘plant a tree today’, which is vague enough to draw the viewer in to open the book and continue reading. The illustration style is a simplification of how the world looks in reality, with jagged edges and minimal detail. She incorporates shadow and texture to bring back a sense of depth and intrigue while maintaining the simplicity. Like Carla Cabras, Evelin too approached the design of her book as an object as opposed to an aimless collection of illustrations. This is seen especially in the way that she left no spine on the book, and binded the signatures together in such a way that the thread spells the words ‘take action’. This makes the book as an object stick out – on a shelf it would be easily distinguishable compared to other books. This is a clever way to tie back to the very point of the book: to encourage and equip people to take action on climate change.
This book is an enlightening experience for us all, as it confronts us with our world's frequently overlooked, contentious issues. The infographics make frightening global statistics visually approachable and emphasise the topic in question. What is particularly inspiring about Evelin’s work is that she addressed many issues regarding climate change as opposed to just one. This makes the design even more compelling, as it illustrates just how large of a problem the climate change crisis really is.
In your own work, consider how you can draw on the methods that Evelin used in ‘The Visual Exploration Book’. Try using a bold, contrasting colour palette. Think of how you can design your output in an unconventional way that demands attention. Consider how you can incorporate simple illustrations and infographics to convey information in an approachable way.
Conclusion
Johan Elmehag, Egle Plytnikaite, Christoph Sarow, Nydia Lilian, Sergi Bayés, Carla Cabras, and Evelin Dankó rose to the brief that mother nature set. Through poster designs, editorial projects, animations and everything in between, they directed their creative skills into making an impact on the climate change crisis.
Throughout the book, I have drawn observations from their work that can inspire your approaches if you so choose. However, your own observations are of equal importance, so I encourage you to not let this be the end of the book. Flick back through, highlight words, write down notes, scribble down ideas. Let this serve as a springboard for you to make your own contributions to the climate change brief.
The brief is clear.
Mother Nature is the client.
The world is the audience.
Climate change is the problem.
Are you the designer?
