That's so cool! And they found a few of them, and they're now growing seedlings in greenhouses for eventual replanting!
Quercus tardifolia is a relic species leftover from when the climate was much cooler and wetter in the past, and can only really live in a few high-elevation spots in Texas. It's definitely still at risk of extinction due to increasing heat and drought caused by climate change, but the discovery means this species still has a chance.

The Ants Who Build Barns for their Livestock
Tumblr media
Everyone knows that ants are excellent little architects building homes of leaves & silk, or from paper from dead leaves (called "carton" similar to material made by wasps) and, of course, homes in soil or tree cavities.
But, some ants will also build homes for their livestock. Little brown ants who live in English Oaks build barns out of moss to house their favorite aphids and accompany their heard to and from the pasture each night. (the pasture is in the tree)

Munin wedged herself between the roof and headrest, and looked at the views.
Tumblr media
The morning clouds were beautiful.
We drove to town for errands, Munin making many friends as usual.
Tumblr media
The sunset going home was even better.
Munin settled on the headrest again, this time to sleep.
