When talking about the distinction between Simon Petrikov and the Ice King,  it’s important to remember that originally, the Crown wasn’t trying to turn Simon into Ice King -

It was trying to turn him into this guy.

At the time, the Ice Crown - or rather the Wishing Crown - was programmed with Gunther’s wish to become Evergreen. So everything related to making the current wearer like Evergreen is a very direct result of the Crown’s Magic. The physical changes -

And the obsession with the name ‘Gunther’ -

And maybe some of the irritability and anger issues -

That is something the Crown is very directly forcing unto its current wielder. 

But everything else?

Ice King, personality-wise, was not much like Evergreen at all, or even like Gunther's view of him. And Ice Finn of the Farmworld Universe was also pretty different from the both of them.

At the time, I remember people assumed Ice Finn’s behavior is more indicative of what the Crown is actually trying to do with its wielders. That Ice King is so different because of Simon’s subconscious resistance against the Crown - while Finn’s much younger and dumber brain is a lot susceptible to the Curse’s influence to become some sort of mad world-conquering emperor of ice and snow. 

But, with the context of the Crown’s actual backstory. That doesn’t seem very likely anymore. I think what’s actually happening there is that the Crown is just trying to make its wielder an Ice Wizard on par with Evergreen (who was the Actual Goddam Ice Elemental) and that means pumping the wielder’s brain so full of Magic, Madness and Sadness to a level that is bound to overwhelm anyone.

And Simon’s and Farmworld Finn’s very different behaviors after putting on the crown is indicative, more than anything, of how their psyche reacts to Madness and Sadness in general. You know, Finn has a very proactive and kinda aggressive personality - and you add Crown-induced-Madness-and-Sadness and a compulsion to use Ice Magic as much as possible and you get all of…. this 

Meanwhile, for Simon, the compulsions of the Crown originally filtered exclusively via the language of protection 

As his madness always manifested as romantic obsession 

And using goofy humor to try and deny the pain he’s going through 

Because that’s how Simon’s mind specifically reacts to being flooded with so much Madness and Sadness.

That’s why there’s so many parallels between Ice King and the sort of mistakes and screwed-up stuff Simon does right now! He’s even kidnapping people again!

Because the Madness and Sadness of Ice King might’ve been induced by the Crown, but now Simon has plenty of personal home-grown Madness and Sadness inside him - and it’s no surprise that Curse-Induced or not, his mind reacts to it in a sorta-similar way. (Although obviously not as intensely, again, there was a LOT of MMS in the Ice Crown).

Now as for Ice Thing, and the fact that he seems to be actually rather well-adjusted under effects of his version of the Wishing Crown. I mean... not by the time of the 1000+ Era, but that’s literally eons in the future and also maybe more Gibbon’s fault. Even if the Crown will eventually take some sort of toll on him, for now he seems to be doing pretty well considering his wish. I mean, there's still some sort of Loss of Identity stuff going on

But everything we've seen of Ice Thing (in the present day, at least) shows him as a friendly and cheerful individual that gets along well with others. A far cry from how maladjusted every single wielder of the Ice Crown acted.

At the very least, if there's any notable amount of Sadness in him, we really haven't seen it yet.

There might be several factors here:

First things first, I should acknowledge the possibility that it’s just that Orgalorg’s eldritch brain is better at intaking all that MMS juice. That could play a part, but I think it’s probably more important, at least thematically, to look at the distinction between ‘I wish to be Evergreen’ and ‘I wish to be Ice King’. 

First in the sense that while Ice King was occasionally mean to Gunter at times - he was generally much kinder than Evergreen ever was for ‘his’ Gunther. So, like, pretty much the one Personality Flaw of Ice King that you can directly link to the Ice Crown’s attempt to mimic Evergreen is the occasional anger issues.

And how they relate to Gunther’s view of Evergreen, so grumpy and controlling and constantly saying ‘NO!’

(Both Finn and Simon’s demonstrable not-crown-induced trauma responses can make them pretty short-tempered as well. So I’m not going to say this is purely the effects of the Crown. It still probably plays some sort of factor at why the wielder of the Ice Crown is Like That).

And that is not a factor in how Gunter views Ice King. For him, Ice King was a doting and loving father figure - so if the Crown was ever trying to implement any sort of specific negative personality traits, this is absolutely no longer a factor. Because the original Ice Crown was a reflection of Evergreen’s abuse, and now Ice Thing is a reflection of Ice King’s fatherly love.

Which is, itself, probably an echo or remnant of Simon’s own strong parental instincts. 

Secondly, while the Crown was trying to make the Ice King just as powerful as Evergreen…. Ice King was obviously not as powerful as Evergreen. Because he was already a second-rate copy of the Ice Elemental’s power, and because Ice King was often just too doofy to use his powers correctly and probably because some remnant of Simon’s original sensible self is subconsciously holding his powers back.

Either way, being ‘like Ice King’ as Gunter sees him requires less Magic than being ‘like Evergreen’ as Gunther saw him - and therefore less Madness and Sadness. Leading to the wearer or, um, the eater being a lot more well-adjusted from the get-go.

And I think that the implication that Ice Thing has fused with the Crown, so there's never going to be another poor sap who puts on the Crown and gets Ice King'd. But if there is one somehow... at least the process is going to be less mentally detrimental that time around?

Maybe one day Simon could look back and appreciate how much he (or Ice King, or both of them, or however you want to look at the situation) is responsible for basically neutralizing the Crown that ruined his life in the first place.

how to convince the ga that byler isn't rushed (kind of just a rant about lettergate)

they need to and i mean NEED to vecna mike because the only way the ga will understand that byler has been built up since the beginning is if we’re given scenes in context. we as bylers obviously get it but byler is at risk of being labeled “too rushed” if they don’t put effort into referencing the important parts of mike’s feelings developing.

the audience doesn't really have a problem with believing that will is gay and in love with mike because there are things in his arc that are just obvious and clearly point to that.

but mike on the other hand is in the middle of a love triangle. unlike most of the other main characters, mike isn't open about his feelings. we don't get his internal monologue. he doesn't tell others how he's feeling. thats why its so easy for bylers and milevens alike to interpret his every move in either direction. it's purely because we don't know. so, in season five, there are things they have to address and give concrete meaning to so that people understand how byler actually does make sense.

the most important scene that i’ve already kinda talked about to do this is...

this one, obviously, the most important little part of all of byler's season three. i want vecna talking about this. i want mike thinking about this. it’s crucial. it’s essential. his behavior here is weird as hell! it even reads weirdly in a script that was released and then edited quickly after. it's important and it needs to be addressed and treated as such. in the script (forgive me if i'm off, i don't have a copy of it so this is from memory) it reads as "what's wrong with me?" that obviously points our way, but since we don't get his internal monologue there's no way to be sure. it needs to be addressed.

this is also kinda lettergate proof because i think the unsent letters and the fact that mike did try to call will also be essential to proving what was going on with him during the gap between season three and four. if i were in charge of the show, i would do a whole flashback sequence to these six months. i want to know exactly where he is, what he’s doing, what he's thinking, how the people around him are reacting to his behavior. we need a shot of the love, mike. it's SO IMPORTANT.

literally i could scream about how important (and likely) lettergate is.

one thing that REALLY scares me about lettergate is the possibility of them reddieying us. yes that is now a verb. for any of you who never had an it 2017 phase, reddieying is where richie and eddie, two characters, had feelings for each other but never admitted it. at the end of the movie after eddie dies, we get this scene:

this is what i like to call reddieying. and yes that is also finn wolfhard. this is why we are scared.

the letters could be used in a VERY similar way if either mike or will dies to express the love that they both once had for each other. closure of sorts. i think that would be VERY poor writing (we've all heard my theory about how mike's love for will is literally essential to the ending of the show) but i think it's highly possible especially given the overlap between it and stranger thing's fandoms. the letters could be read at the end in a similar way to the way hopper's was, sad heroes and all. this draws another parallel.

above is a letter written by newt from the maze runner to thomas. newt is confirmed gay by the author of the book, and this letter is written to thomas but never read by him until newt dies. letterboxd reviews of this movie read:

and i didn't even have to search for these. these were like the top couple reviews of the movie. they were all on the first page of reviews.

all i'm saying is, by having the letter be an idea in our minds, they've set up a way to kill off one of the characters and still have a slightly resolved, weirdly up to interpretation ending. i do still think it's poor writing. i could kind of go into that too if anybody is interested.

i think that if lettergate is used as a device during mike's flashbacks to show how long he's felt this way that they will be using this thing they've set up for good, however, if they newtmas us and reddie us i might die. just letting you know.

୨୧ you actually convert kimi into being a huge fan of these bands, he already liked that type of music anyways but he didn’t listen to those bands before he got with you! you make him so many burned CDs

♡ whenever kimi is with you while you’re filming for jackass and perform a particularly nasty stunt, the cameraman LOVES to pan over to kimi, capturing his face which wears a slight frown and a scrunched nose <3

୨୧ when ryan did the toy car up the ass stunt, he made sure it was an f1 car, just to add some irony to the situation as you were the one giving him advice on how to get it up there ( kimi was NOT impressed with the joke )

♡ something that happens on the regular is f1 journalists calling in on radio bam, hoping to get the latest scoop on the cars and drivers from you… as if you know anything about the cars?

୨୧ of course, you entertain them for a minute or two, feeding them fake stories about how all of the drivers actually despise each other and they’re feuding… you know they won’t mind!

♡ but when you get bored, you quickly dive into a deeply detailed description of yours and kimi’s sex life, giving them only the dirtiest details

୨୧ they always hang up, it’s a guarantee <3 usually kimi is listening in at home or even sitting in the studio with you, just gazing at you with a tiny, sly smirk on his face

He loses his bestfriend, he's destroyed and he cries because he thinks he's dead and he's going to blame himself because he'll think it's his fault. The song in the background is Heroes. And the lyrics, at this precise moment are:

"And we kissed, as though nothing could fall. And the shame, [changing to Joyce and Jonathan] the shame was on the other side."

Which is a clear queer coding. That means that Mike and Will kissed (= spent time together, very close) as though nothing could fall (= nothing could go wrong), and the shame (= of being gay) was on the other side (= the Upside Down, where Will is. Because he's the obvious gay one). And it changed to Joyce and Jonathan because they're Will's family.

And now, let's skip to Season 3:

This hug, from end of season 3 is a clear parallel of the first one we saw on season 1. His face isn't obviously the same. In season 1, we can see he's sad, crying and he hugs his mom desperately. But season 3, shows a confused, emotionless Mike who hugs his mother like he's in shock. Why's that? Well...

The parallel is to show Mike's feelings. In the end of season 3, when El kisses Mike, his eyes are wide open, he doesn't move and when she's done and leaves he doesn't move, instead he looks on the side with a super confused and shocked face. And in the original script (sorry couldn't find it), we saw that Mike's reaction was like this because it was written:

What is wrong with me?

So it was meant for him to be that way (and btw Finn played it well). And then, when Hopper reads his letter to El, we can hear his voice with scenes showing up. And when he says:

"And if I'm being really honest, I don't want things to change."

Mike looks back at Will's house before leaving with his bike.

This is a lowkey queer coding. Change is the liking boys realization from Mike's side. And why Hopper says "I don't want things to change" ? Because the change means the behavior change for Mike. He'll feel like a mistake, just like Will, he'll feel different, incapable of liking a girl like every other boys his age...

So what I'm trying to say is. That these two scenes are parallels to show Mike's improvement and changement over the seasons. Season 1 he was sad because of the loss of his bestfriend. But why would we only see Mike's POV and not Dustin's or Lucas' ? They also cared about Will. No, we only see Mike's because he's Will's love interest. And in Season 3 we see a total confused Mike hugging his mother, trying to understand what happened. Because what happened is that he understood, he finally admitted he was in love with Will. Why's that? Well, first he's confused by El's I love you, and kiss. Then he looks back at Will's house, knowing he just left. And finally he hugs his mom trying to figure out what's wrong with him. Cause he thinks there's something wrong with him, as seen in the script (try to find it yourself, cause I couldn't. But I remember sawing it on Twitter 'X' !). And it's even more possible because Mike's introduction in season 4, has a lot of queer coding. I'll try to list them all.

Rainbows on the letter (= signifies lgbtq+), One Way arrow pointing to an open closet (= one way arrow -> "only possible thing/explanation", open closet -> he's out to himself), Poster with a naked Dragon (= just like Steve or Billy, straight boys, have, almost naked women, on their walls, Mike has almost naked character, men and animals from dnd), poster from a movie with an almost naked man (= to understand he likes them naked, just a gay thing I guess ;-;). For this last point, yes there's also a woman almost naked, however since the movie is about men, being way superior to women (that's the movie don't blame me, and I can't remember its name, sorry), I'm not sure he'd really want to have this woman in particular in his room.

Also there's one of Will's binder under his bed, the same one where there are tons of his drawings and finally, I'd like to end up with Mike literally destroying El's letter when Nancy tells him he's late (who does that?). So yeah that's all I could find, there's probably more, which needs more attention and analysis but I did the minimum let's say.

So all of this, to say that season 1 and 3 hugs were parallels of Mike's feelings, and that the season 3's is more possible when we notice the character introduction of Mike in season 4. So yeah, he really had a Gay realization over there!

"You two are definitely in love." Rey said as she sat down to eat lunch. Y/N and Poe had been sitting there alone before, and it wasn't long before more people joined the two.

"We are not in love." Y/N chuckled, trying to keep the hurt out of her voice. They might not be in love, but she was. It was like her worst kept secret, because obviously everyone except Poe could tell.

"I literally just watched you stare lovingly at each other. Poe moved hair out of your face as if he were gonna kiss you." Finn said as he sat.

"That was not lovingly. She had food in her hair." Poe turned to be more square to the table, shoving food in his mouth.

"How nice of you." Y/N snorted, also beginning to eat again. She was used to it by now, being best friends with him for so many years. Poe was just like that, he was different.

"That is such bullshit." Rey said under her breath. Y/N rolled her eyes, not saying any more on the subject. Her and Poe had long since stopped trying to convince their friends that they were 'just best friends, I promise!'

The two had been best friends for years. She had been a Spice Runner with him, barely escaping together. The thought of the pair of them being any more than best friends - well, it was unlikely. If Poe had feelings for her, he would have told her, but he hadn't, so he doesn't.

"It's like you and Finn having feelings for each other." Y/N shrugged. She thought it would gain her some support, but it seemed to have the opposite effect.

"No, it's not." Rey and Finn both answered calmly. Y/N knew that, she knew it wasn't the same at all, they all knew it, but it didn't hurt to try and defend herself.

"No, it's not." Y/N mocked quietly, poking at her food. She just wished everyone would shut up about the topic, shut up about their unrequited love, shut up about their relationship.

"We're just playing with you guys." Finn defended, but Y/N rolled her eyes. Everyone knew damn well that the two acted like they were in love.

"I think it's funny. Don't you, darling?" Poe turned to Y/N, smile on his face at the use of the pet name that was sure to send their group into another round of teasing.

"Hilarious." Y/N whispered, silently standing up and grabbing her trey.

"Come on!" Finn yelled, their other friends following his protest. Y/N just continued to walk, dumping her food in the corner of the mess hall and walking out the door. She just needed a break from everyone, a break from the teasing. It was too much for her.

"Oh, hi Y/N!" Rose said as she entered. Y/N smiled, trying to be thankful that at least one of her friends wasn't going to try and convince Poe of feelings he didn't have. She was sure it was worse for her - her trying to convince her friends that she didn't have feelings when all she wanted to do was tell Poe.

But she couldn't do that, could she? Poe had been a Spice Runner, a criminal, theif, and smuggler before. But now, he was so much more. He was a war hero, the best pilot in the galaxy, and a flirt. Her feelings in his life hardly mattered. She was sure there were multiple girls on base, thousands in the galaxy, who had a crush on Poe Dameron.

"Hi, Rose." Y/N wanted to move past the girl and go to her room before any of her friends caught up, but that would be rude, and Rose didn't deserve that.

"Why're you leaving so soon? Did you eat?" Rose asked, looking over the other girl's shoulder to see their friends. When Y/N turned, she saw Poe get up, and she knew she needed to leave. Poe was definitely going to follow her, and if he did she wasn't sure how their conversation would play out.

"Uh," Y/N looked down at BB-8, who was beeping at her side. "Rose, why don't we talk later?" Y/N didn't wait for her response, gliding out the door and hoping BB-8 wouldn't follow her. Y/N was full on running by the time she made it to her hallway, the BB unit beeping shortly behind her.

"Y/N!" Oh shit. Poe was also running now, but he wouldn't make it before she got to her door. She just needed some time alone, time without their friends or Poe, who would just make her fall harder and remind her exactly why they couldn't be together. She turned and slid into her room as she hit the button, barely standing in time to shut the door. She wasn't quick enough, however, and BB-8 slid through after her, hitting a wall before he could stop. Her room was small, but she didn't mind. It's not like she had anyone to share it with anyway.

"BB-8, what are you doing here?" Y/N asked, sitting on her bed. She just wanted to be alone, to gather herself and rest. Her squadron had a mission tomorrow; it was small, sure, but she didn't much care. Ever since the War was won, the squadrons would take turns going to different planets to answer their distress calls or make sure they were doing alright. It wasn't hard work, but it was tiring. Sometimes there was an old Imperial ship they had to take care of, one that hadn't gotten the message. BB-8's beeps brought her back to reality, and she listened to him tell her about how his master was worried about her.

"Poe? He can't be that worried, buddy. And besides, I'm fine." Y/N shrugged, trying not to understand the droid's disapproving beeps. She didn't want to hear it.

"Y/N?" As if they had summoned him, he was knocking on her door, panting against it. "I did not just sprint across base to have you ignore me!" He yelled. Y/N's plan was to be quiet and hope he'd leave, but BB-8 pretty much destroyed that idea. He beeped out to Poe, rolling to the door.

"I'm trying to sleep." Y/N lied, which didn't even matter, since BB-8 immediately called her out.

"Y/N," Poe sighed, slamming his fist on the door once again. "Please, I need to talk to you." He sounded so upset, Y/N almost opened the door.

Almost.

"Just go, Poe." Y/N told him, laying down and turning onto her stomach and putting her face down in a pillow. She was trying not to cry, but it was hard; she was overwhelmed and Poe being there but not being able to comfort her made it worse. They were just best friends, they had been for years. BB-8 beeped out to Poe, and Y/N shot up.

"You're crying?" Poe asked through the door, and Y/N scoffed. That droid was snitching on her so quickly she was sure it was anticipating her moves and reading her mind.

"No, no I'm not." Y/N wiped her face, trying not to sniffle. Poe would be able to hear it and then she'd really be done.

"Just let me in!" Poe begged, hitting his fists against the door once more.

"Please," Y/N begged, tears rolling down her face. She couldn't do this today. She wished she could just rest and then have at least a day alone while on her mission.

"Y/N, what's going on?" Poe asked, so quiet she almost didn't hear it. She hesitated, but then she heard someone yelling down the hall.  "Now?" Poe yelled back, not seeming happy. Y/N took a deep breath, wiping her face once more and standing.

"Yes, General. It was reported only a few hours ago." A girl was talking to Poe, Y/N's heart stopped for a second. She knew Poe was more than capable of going on surprise missions, but they always worried her.

"Shit, alright." Y/N could just see Poe running a hand through his hair. "I'll be out of here soon." Y/N opened the door quickly, seeing Poe for only second. His eyes were wide and his face was worried, but she only let BB-8 through the door before she was closing it again. She knew Poe had the chance to see her - he had even opened his mouth to speak before she had closed the door in his face.

"Y/N, please! I need to talk to you before I go! Y/N!" Poe begged, but she just walked to the bed and laid down, face in the pillows once more. Poe continued to yell and hit the door, but she put a pillow over her head to drown it out.  She wasn't sure if she had fallen asleep before or after Poe had left, but she wasn't able to sleep long. She woke up multiple times, tossing and turning until she figured it was time to do her pre-flight check anyway. She got up, taking a deep breath and putting her flight suit on before braiding her hair up. As she did, she thought about Poe, and how she had maybe been a tad dramatic the day before. She knew she needed to talk to Poe, that she couldn't keep living like that, but she wasn't sure she would able to live without Poe anyway.

"You wait for me now, hm?" Y/N asked as her R4 unit beeped happily outside her door. "Be careful. People are gonna start thinking we're a team, just like Poe and his electric pet." Y/N joked as she began to walk to Poe's door. He hadn't come to see her after his mission last night, which was weird, since they always went to each other as soon as they were back from missions. It was their way of letting each other know that they had made it, that the other could stop worrying.

Maybe that's why she couldn't sleep last night.

"We're going to stop by to see if Poe is back." Y/N told R4, who's beeps did not seem positive enough for her. "I just need to make sure he's okay." She ignored R4's beeps about her crush, since they were getting close to Poe's anyway.

"Y/N," Finn caught her attention from a connecting hallway, and she turned to face her friend.

"Finn," She greeted, noticing his worried look.

"I'm sorry about earlier, we took it too-"

"What's wrong?" She asked, not wanting to talk about the previous day. The fact that Finn had mentioned it simply as 'earlier' told her he hadn't gone to sleep yet.

"You don't know?" Finn's eyes were suddenly wide, and Y/N blinked. Many things were going through her mind, and she couldn't pick one to focus on.

"Know what?" She wanted her voice to come out even, but it was too high, wavering too much for it to seem normal. "I don't have time for this. Where is Poe?" She asked, knowing she only had a couple minutes before her flight time. Finn seemed even more upset at this, and he stepped toward her.

"No one's told you?" Finn moved to put a hand on her shoulder, and that's when she knew something bad happened.

"Finn, spit it out! Obviously I haven't heard anything." Y/N felt a little sorry for snapping at him, but he didn't seem all that upset at the fact that she had just lashed out.

"It's Poe. Control lost him yesterday." Y/N felt her heart drop. She swore her legs were numb. Of all the things she was thinking, this had to be the worst.

"What do you mean, 'lost him?'" Y/N whispered, heart racing way too fast for her to think. It was like her brain had twisted in on itself, forming a pretzel. All her thoughts were jumbled, a mess of not being able to breathe.

"He's not confirmed to be dead, but no one knows where he is." Finn answered, but it didn't make Y/N feel better. If he was gone for much longer it didn't much matter.

"I have to find him." She whispered, walking away from Poe and to the hanger.

"Y/N," Finn said, grabbing her arm to stop her. She pushed him away, but Finn continued to follow her. "Where are you going?"

"Poe, he needs me. I have to go." She explained, grabbing her helmet in the hallway leading to the hanger. She was putting it on and climbing in when she realized the rest of her squadron had been doing the same thing.

The mission.

She had forgotten all about it. She wanted to go find Poe now, her heart was practically begging her to, but she also knew that if she didn't go on the mission, Poe would probably kill her.

She just wished she hadn't left things the way she did.

She flipped on her control signals before speaking to the center. "After the completion of this mission, I will be leaving to find General Dameron." She told them with no room for argument. She doubted they would have anyway, but she wouldn't have taken it if they had. Most of the remaining people on base knew better than to mess with her.

She was going to find Poe.

But Maker, she was exhausted.

She knew she should have gotten more sleep the night before, she knew she shouldn't have been thinking about Poe, but she couldn't help herself.

It's probably why she didn't see the stray ship that had decided to fight them. It's definitely why she got hit on her way to go find Poe after the mission.

"Poe?" Rose asked as she saw a dark haired man getting out of the battered X-Wing. Poe tore his helmet off, looking around. From where she stood, Rose could see a large cut across his cheekbone that didn't seem to be scabbing too well, a couple more on the other side of his face. There was a dark bruise around his temple that stretched from his cheekbone to his hairline, and his eyes had dark circles underneath them.

"Rose," Poe stumbled over to her, dropping his helmet before tripping at her feet. He stayed down, and she quickly got to her knees. Finn ran over, having watched his friend face plant, and also fell to his knees.

"Poe?" Finn moved his friend's face and Poe opened his eyes so suddenly it startled Finn backwards.

"Where is she?" Poe rasped out, moving to try and stand. He ended up sitting though, Rose and Finn guiding him against one of the crates. He was gulping in air as if his lungs didn't have capacity, and it worried his friends.

"We need water!" Finn yelled out, looking around at people scrambling to get their General some water. He turned when Poe hit him a couple times, still panting. His friend was looking worse for wear, and definitely needed at least three hours in the bacta tank.

"Where's Y/N?" Poe was having trouble keeping his eyes open, and Finn was sure he was going to pass out very soon. He shared a look with Rose, both worried.

"Poe, we're going to get you to the bacta." Rose told him as she looked around. "We need a medic! Multiple medics!" She shouted out, seeing more people move. Poe shook his head lightly, eyes staying closed for longer now. He grabbed her arm, holding her tight.

"Where," His throat was almost too dry to speak now, and Finn had to drip the water into his mouth when he finally received the container. When Poe had swallowed, he opened his eyes once more. "Y/N. Please." He begged. He just wanted to see her. Almost dying had taught him a lot about his life, much of which he didn't know. He realized that not telling Y/N his feelings was the stupidest thing he'd ever done, and he promised himself it he ever made it back to base he would tell her immediately.

"We're going to heal you up, General." A man said, the medics getting ready to lift Poe.

"Y/N," He groaned again, but he was too tired. He couldn't keep his eyes open any longer. He felt himself being lifted up, onto the medic table, and he took a deep breath as he tried to fight the sleep.

"How are we gonna tell him that Y/N hasn't come back?" Rose asked, thinking Poe had been knocked out.

"What?" Poe was renewed with energy, sitting up. He pushed away the medics with his last remaining strength; he needed to know what happened to her. "Where is she?" He yelled, still pushing and fighting.

"Poe, you're gonna hurt yourself!" Finn told him, wishing his friend would just pass out so he wouldn't have to explain.

"What happened to her?" Poe felt like his life was going in slow motion, but everyone else was still fast enough to restrain him. "No! Stop!" He yelled, looking around. This had to be a joke - there was no way she was gone.

"Poe, please, we can talk about this later-" Finn had gone over to comfort and restrain him, but it was too late.

"I need to know! I need to find her!" Poe finally was able to roll off the table, and he crawled to his helmet.

"Stun him." Finn said sadly as he watched Poe stumble to stand. He tried putting on his helmet, but one of the people around him had set the gun to stun already. Finn watched Poe fall on the ground, helmet rolling away.

"That went much worse than I expected." Rey said as Poe was lifted up to the table once more and carted off.

"I'd like to see you do better." Finn turned, and Rey sighed. Everyone was on high alert ever since the General and his right hand girl had gone missing, but it seemed only some of it had cleared up when Poe made his way back.

"Any news?" Rey asked, hoping for another piece of goodluck.

"The only news we have is Poe coming back. We haven't heard anything from Y/N since she was hit." Rose informed her, and they all sighed. They weren't sure what to do at this point - Finn had sent a couple pilots out to look for Poe and Y/N, but they had all come back with nothing. Everyone was starting to get worried, a heavy unease resting in their hearts.

"Well, let's hope they can sedate Poe enough for him to stay in the bacta tank until Y/N comes back." Finn's optimism was not lost on Rey and Rose, who both felt their hearts drop the slightest bit. The worst part about all of this was the last conversations they had with Y/N and Poe, both of them leaving upset because of the teasing. If they had known...

But they hadn't, and now they were left dealing with the guilt and the fact that there was a large chance that even if by some miracle they were able to find Y/N's X-Wing, she would be gone.

In the end, Poe had not been sedated enough to stay in the bacta tank for as long as his friends would have liked. Medics let him out after two hours, but he had been yelling and banging on the glass for half of that. He kept trying to swim to the top, which they luckily kept sealed closed, but the point at which he was taken out was when he took his breathing tube out and refused to put it back in. Once he was lifted out, four men had to hold him down while a nurse toweled him off.

"Stop! Let me go!" Poe screamed, kicking and bucking with all his might. "That's an order! An order!" He had to be sedated once more in order to be brought to his room and rest. His friends all sat in the room with him, none of them ablen to sleep as the hours passed. There was a speaker from Control resting on the table, and they all listened to the endless drones about when it was safe to take off and when it wasn't and who was coming in and who was leaving. Rose had fallen asleep against the side of the couch, but Rey and Finn stayed awake.

"I'm going to go out there myself soon." Rey said softly after awhile. There was still no sign of Y/N and she knew it was late enough that they probably wouldn't be sending any more pilots out to look. Finn didn't respond, just nodded, wishing he too knew how to fly so he could help.

"Anything?" Poe's voice started the others in the room, and they all whipped their heads toward him. He was sore, and he knew that he could have used longer in the bacta tank, but he also knew he would have gone insane if he were in there for any longer.

"Not yet." Rey said with a sad smile that she hoped made Poe feel a little more peaceful. She watched him sit up and look around before he tried to swing his legs over to the side of the bed. Rey and Finn were at his sides in a matter of seconds, keeping him down.

"I have to go-"

"Last time you tried to stand you face planted. Twice." Finn told him with a small smile. Poe just shook his head, still struggling weakly.

"She needs me, I have to find her." Poe argued, his voice sounding as if he hadn't used it in years.

"Poe, we understand how much she means to you." Rey told him, but he pushed them both away in annoyance.

"No, you don't!" Poe huffed as Finn and Rey stood back, both just staring at him. "You don't because I didn't even understand until I left. She means everything to me. Wherever she goes, I go." Poe told them. They were shocked into silence as Poe looked straight forward, taking a deep breath. Now that they were stunned, Poe could make his move.

"And that includes death." Before his friends had time to process what he had said, Poe was launching himself over the bed and running out the door. He realized with gratefulness that he had pants on, meaning his friends had requested he not be put in one of those stupid medic gowns. He also realized as people stared at him that he didn't have a shirt, but that would have to be dealt with at a later time. He ran through the halls, pushing people away as he made his way to hanger. People were shouting things at him as he passed them, but he didn't care at all. He had to make it to his X-Wing before Finn and Rey could make it to him.

"Poe!"

"Poe, wait!"

They were close, yelling his name as he entered the hanger. He grabbed a random flight helmet, hoping it would fit as he made his way to the droid charging station. BB-8 was sleeping, and even though Poe knew it would take awhile to get his droid into the plane, he also knew that without the droid he wouldn't make it far.

"Poe, stop!" Finn yelled, but Poe could tell he was still far enough away. He could make it.

"Incoming X-Wing! It's coming too fast!" Someone in control yelled, but Poe paid no attention. He was running to his X-Wing when the ship crash landed, the shock causing Poe to fall to the ground. As the dust settled and Poe stood to go to his X-Wing, he realized he also recognized this one.

"Y/N?" Poe whispered as he stared. He couldn't move for a second, but then all at once his brain kicked into gear and he was sprinting. He had made it halfway when the top popped open and Y/N leaned on things as she tried to stand. She ended up practically falling to the ground, but it wasn't too bad of a hit. She was able to be kind-of standing when Poe scooped her up into her arms and squeezed her tight. She knew immediately who it was, and held onto him as if he were the only thing keeping her alive. One of his arms was wrapped around her waist, keeping her as close as possible, while the other was on her head, holding it to his heart. The relief he felt at having her with him was like a drug - he couldn't feel pain, emotional and physical. He only felt her and happiness that she was there and alive.

"Poe," Y/N said as she pulled back slightly. Poe put a hand on her cheek, keeping his other arm around her. He could tell he was already crying, but he couldn't bring himself to care.

"I thought I lost you." Poe whispered, taking in the state of her physical health. She had too many bruised around her face and collarbones for his liking, her flight suit singed in some places. He knew she couldn't stand on her own, as he was half holding her up and she was also leaning heavily on him.

"I would never leave you, flyboy." Y/N muttered, swiping her thumbs across his skin in a soothing motion. "You and me, yeah?" She asked, and he smiled. He knew he couldn't wait, that this was it, that he had to tell her.

Or maybe he could show her.

He leaned forward and kissed her, careful with the cut he could feel on her bottom lip. The kiss was long and sweet, no rush. When they parted, Y/N looked at him confused, and he just shrugged.

"While I was trying to get back to base, I realized that I had never kissed you. Isn't that strange? We're best friends and we've never kissed." Poe joked, making her chuckle a bit and raise a hand to his cheek.

"I think we are probably more than best friends." Y/N told him. The two went in to kiss again, but it was interrupted by their friends.

"Ya think?" Finn said as he ran up to them. Y/N smiled while Poe pouted at their failed kiss, reluctantly letting Finn and Rey join their hug so that all their friends could be comforted.

"Please don't ever do that again." Rey muttered, making everyone chuckle slightly. "That was way too much for me to handle."

"If either of you ever go missing again, we're locking the other one in a prisoner cell." Finn's comment made everyone laugh as the all parted, Y/N still leaning against Poe. "You think I'm joking? Chasing both your asses around like that was tiring!"

"Speaking of tiring," Poe turned to Y/N, who's eyes were beginning to slip closed. He knew they needed to get to a medic soon, and that he also needed much more rest than he had been getting. "I think we better go get you taken care of."

"Kiss me again?" Y/N mumbled, and Poe rolled his eyes, complying all the same.

• pretty self-explanatory!! simon is a vampire. it played out pretty similarly as our simon at first; he got the crown, betty left, mushroom bomb went off, and he met marceline.

• that's where things change. simon had to wear the crown to protect marcy, again. marcy panicked when simon wouldn't take it off and bit him without malicious intent, instead turning him into a vampire.

• since this technically killed simon, he broke out of the crown's grasp, now undead. marceline thought she killed him, panicked, and ran away. simon lived on his own ever since for like 1,000 years and kind of lost it being alone!!

HMS simon au

• this one is kind of like a crossover ?? with another one of my favorite things. it's based off chonny jash's characters, heart, mind, and soul. the whole plot of CCCC [chonny's charming chaos compendium] is that this guy's consciousness split into three [heart mind and soul], and they needed to reconcile.

• so . this goes basically the exact same as our simon. our simon, now like 1,059 [or however old he is], is in his little exhibit [same as the start of fionna and cake!!] he's chilling but keeps getting pressed closer to the edge each day.

• the main difference is that simon never actually ends up trying to make a portal to golbetty, and reaches his limit after like a series of unfortunate events.

• simon splits off into his own HMS. that's . essentially it . i dont wanna spoil much....

winter king worldswap AU

• i don't have it all planned out on how exactly it happened, but basically, winter king ends up in our ooo [aka just where our simon is from]. obviously this one is incredibly confusing for most residents of ooo, specifically marceline, finn, pb, and others .

• eventually, they figure out [pretty quickly] that this is NOT their simon . they try to ask where their simon is [who is out traveling with fionna and cake], but winter king has no clue !! he likely tries to pretend he does know though .

• ultimately . marceline ends up hating winter king

simon / F&C world interception AU

• is it obvious i don't have names for them

• ok so . basically, somehow simon ends up in the F&C modern au. which . technically should be impossible since it's inside his brain,,, but i have thought of a solution

• simon somehow [accidentally] projects his consciousness into the F&C world, leaving his real body just kinda There [probably unconscious]. think of it like that one adventure time episode where magic man makes jake go inside himself, and he explores his own little city and stuff . it's kind of like that!!

• his deal is similar to fionna and cake concerning his effects on their world . like for example how fionna touched winter king's crown and the magic went away, or when cake turned that one dude into a literal hotdog. basically, simon is doing the same on the F&C world, except he's doing the opposite!! he's magic-ifying it.

• shit starts to go down once people actually notice him. since he blends in so well, it takes a bit,,, just starts to get obvious once that one cookie turns alive or smth 😭

• simon is eventually overcrowded by a ton of curious [and terrified] people, and runs off to just the first inconspicuous place he sees. this leads him to running into marshall lee, who's chillin with gary. simon, gary, and marshall lee kinda chill for a while !! marshall and gary probably talk abt how fionna's gone, which prompts simon to feel guilty and he reveals where he's actually from, and what happened to fionna.

• gary and marshall lee don't believe him at first, until simon turns something [idk what!!] into magic again. they then try to get to our ooo

• marshall lee and gary make it, but simon's still kinda trapped in his own consciousness . likely in the candy kingdom hospital with marceline bc he just passed out unexpectedly 😭

My opinion on the finale episodes below the cut. Obviously spoiler warning lol

First of all. I see people say it was really underwhelming and i kinda have to agree? It wasnt a Bad ending or a lazy one or whatever words have been thrown around tho imo. I feel like with all the hype about how "painful" and emotional itll be from the VA and from everyone, we all just expected more tragic outcomes or something.

I am dissappointed because of that as well. I liked how Simon finally reflected a bit and had some self awareness about their situation with Betty. I loved that he didnt become Ice King again or that they didnt do some actual time travel to "fix" stuff. I also liked that they didnt necessarily made him a bad husband (?/boyfriend?) he kinda just never realised that Betty has been putting more into their duo than he was.

That doesnt make him innocent tho b4 someone comes at me. He was a bit too self absorbed but i dont think he was entirely selfish either. He was a person who made mistakes and didnt realise them. The line where he said smt like "i wish we could have talked like this before" also makes it pretty clear to me that Betty never really spoke up about these things either. Golbetty had to make him aware and tbh? I think that was more Golb than Betty.

The whole Scarab ordeal felt a bit. Ehhhhhh I dont know. His anger reaction to things suddenly becoming "canon" (lmao) was very nice to see but him being allowed to wreck havoc like that for a good while felt more like an excuse to bring the others into this world. I dont have a problem with it btw i just dont see the point why we need Farmwold Jay and Little... I forgot her name damn. Also whys Babyworld Finn here 😭 (i get it, he was in the tank, i dont mean literally i mean Why)

As much as i was soooo mad when LSP freed the scarabs it was very in character. I like how it was a thing that he likes animals from the start so it wasnt senseless stupidity, it was something he would do even tho it was the wrong thing to do. Made me pause and lay down to stare at the ceiling in frustration for a solid minute i cant lie, still in chacter tho.

But alas. I like how in the end it all didnt turn magical (completely since ig its partially magical with Cake and everything else) and how Cake finally cooled down about the crown. IM ALSO SO HAPPY THEY KEEP IN TOUCH WITH SIMON OVER THE PHONEEE!! But yea him wanting to move was so real and I hope he does lmao he deserves it.

I only kinda wish they made him reconnect with Marcy a bit more. I am actually pretty dissappointed that we dont know if he ended up reaching out to her more or not. I understand his situation with not wanting to spook her, i actually feel that bit in a soul connecting level good god, but idk. Im at least happy he is Literally in therapy now

(Kinda makes me wonder tho if he spent the time between the end of AT and the start of FC with no like therapist or psychologist. Just rawdogging his mental illness about everything. Mood tbh but like did he? Did he??)

Anyway despite my slight dissappointment i am actually pretty happy with the outcome. I really liked the theories and the ideas of how Simon may make FC magical or what he will become but tbh this is probably the best outcome. Everyone got a happy/hopeful ending (minus Farmwold Finn ig who im atp assuming is dead. Also Star Marceline and PB) which i am really REALLY happy about.

I gotta say I already wanna write fanfic about these guys so inspirational effect granted. Woooo.

Tldr

I was kinda dissappointed because it was overhyped about how emotional it will be when it really wasnt but other than that I am really happy about how the ending turned out save for the alternatives staying in FC

there is a contrast to be made between how finn asturias treats his daughter versus how salem's father treated her, but i think this is more akin to the comparisons that can be drawn between blake's revolutionary ideals and salem's in that gil is a repetition of ozma who shares a facet of salem's character for thematic reasons; the specific thematic reasoning will likely not be clear until we find out what the vacuo arc has to offer (and obviously i'm speculating quite a lot about a character who might not actually be that important, so asterisk all of this). but:

gil is/was the golden child. it is really clear, from what finn and the shade faculty have to say about the twins, that nobody aside from gillian cared about jax. finn muses that being weak and sickly "twisted [jax's] mind" and both theodore and rumpole take the view that jax was a millstone around his sister's neck—and then in the sections of the book written from jax's point of view it is equally clear that being treated this way throughout his life is what really "twisted" him because he internalized the idea that being frail made him worthless.

gillian—the only person who loves him—used her semblance to share her aura with him, and as soon as she did that he "began to thrive." she set him free. every single adult in their lives regarded jax as a sort of parasite weighing her down, but gillian did not do this out of any sense of obligation; she was not coerced. his semblance literally does not even work on her. she loves him, and she wanted to help him, so she did.

she and her brother believe they are the rightful rulers of vacuo and lead an insurgency together with the intention of ridding vacuo of outsiders and the "weak" so as to usher in a return to the imagined good old days when vacuo was a powerful monarchy

and then, once she discovers that he's so fanatically committed to his cause that he would rather they both die than surrender, she betrays him to ensure their survival.

jax is in many ways a salem counterfactual (what if she was never alone? what if there was no tower, only complete physical dependence on one person and relentless scorn for her frailty from everyone else? what if ozpin's view of her now—as an egotistical manipulator who could sway the hearts of man with little more than a single touch—had been reality?) and obviously he and gillian being twins born in the desert does evoke the idea of, you know, rapunzel. i think the two of them together represent the idea of trauma passing down through generations—rapunzel's twins, and their dead mother whose name was luna, and the alleged bloodline traced back to malik the sunderer—the scars of history and family legacy are all over their story.

there's also. uh. the funniest thing i could possibly be right about. i have not known peace since this day. crochi amour my albatross. it haunts me. if i did hack the mainframe with this one, she's definitely an ozma repetition.

Even with just two episodes Fionna and Cake managed to destroy me, and I’m definitely going to be heavily posting because I love this show so much already. Spoilers and rambling under the cut!! If you want to watch it but don’t have access to HBO, dm me~

They really hammered in the depressing urban theme in episode one, and of course Fionna is incredibly relatable to the struggle of the average person. Hearing swearing in Adventure Time without their usual goofy filler-words like ‘dillweed’ or something feels SO weird, my brain could barely wrap around it.

An implication is that the world Fionna and Cake exist in is literally just a construct of Simon’s mind, which is retroactively kind of predictable, but at the same time slightly insane. This is shown pretty early in episode one, when I saw that fountain, my immediate thought was ‘Betty?!?’, and yeah, those sorts of things kept happening, until the moment Cake literally comes out of Simon’s head.

Speaking of Simon

Jesus Christ man.. he’s depressed as hell. (In my opinion, Finn is too, but they’re handling it in different ways). I was not expecting the content of the show to be much darker, considering ‘Distant Lands’ was about the same rating as regular Adventure time but damn.. seeing Simon hyperventilating hit me a little too hard, especially when he started pulling at his hair.

Be prepared for me to talk about Simon nonstop from here on out, he’s been a blorbo of mine for a long time now and this just relit that flame. Seeing him lying in mud with actually-rendered-red-blood felt so weird and harrowing. I was so happy when he decided to call Marcy and Peebs, and sad when they didn’t pick up on his obviously not too great mental state, but if they had there wouldn’t really be much of a show premise, so I’m fine with that (although sad on his behalf. Mans is suffering)

Anyway. I am a sucker for domestic Bubbline, and their silly antics at the tattoo shop did make me happy even if Simon was getting ignored. I am preparing for some heavy angst when Marcy inevitably realises what’s happening.

One theme that I felt heavily is that the show has sort of ‘grown up’. Even with Obsidian and Together again being set in the close and far off future, they didn’t feel like this. At the end of stakes, Marceline tells Peebs that she finally felt she had ‘grown up’- and that Bubblegum grew up with her (ironically they were both children at the same time, with the mothergum formed in the apocalypse).

This time period is Bubbline in their reckless young adulthood (as much as immortals can be), when the two were coded as older teenagers in the main show. They’re having fun, and trying new things. The other end of the young adult scale is Marshal Lee, Gumball (I didn’t catch his name) and Fionna of course, who are living in a bit of a grittier reality. Being surrounded by these characters who the show expects you to have grown up with is a really weird experience, but I kind of love it.

I really love the ‘modern au’ (I couldn’t think of a better phrasing, sorry) trio, Gumball (I know that’s not his name, my apd couldn’t catch it and there wasn’t subtitles) is so sweet (no pun intended) and a faithful genderbend to Bubblegum while having distinct differences.

Marshall Lee, that madman that he is, is still breaking hearts years later. I tell you, hearing his voice again made me swoon a little. I love the choice they made to make him visually black and it makes so much sense considering Marcy’s mother and also being voice acted by Donald Glover. I wonder what Hunson Abadeer is like in the Fionaverse (a better name although a bit confusing), being mentioned directly by both Lee and Fionna as his mother.

Anyway these are my primary thoughts splattered on a page, I’ll be rebloging like crazy from now on

So I had a new idea for one of those too-ambitious-to-ever-actually-write fics.

I had the thought today that Simon is the only really good father figure in the entire series. Even Jake, who tries his best, kind of sucks at being a dad, and it's only because the pups are so self-sufficient that they all turn out okay. Likewise, the writing is, imo, too forgiving to Joshua for some of the tough love crap he pulled on Finn. Obviously he's nowhere near as bad a father as Martin or Hunson, but the bar is so low it's on the ground.

So it's a shame Simon, who obviously very much wants to be a dad, and who has proven to be pretty good at it even if he's made his own share of mistakes, only returns to sanity when Finn is practically an adult. They're good friends, but the window was basically already closed on him being any kind of significant parental influence in Finn's life.

Then I thought, wait. There's no rules in fanfic. I can imagine whatever what-if scenario I want!!!!!

AU where Simon is Finn's adopted dad:

In this AU, Simon is cured (or perhaps only partially cured?) not long before Finn arrives in Ooo. The HOW may or may not be relevant to the story, but he's back to himself or at least as sane as he was when he was traveling with little Marcy.

When Margaret and Joshua find baby Finn, they do a bit of investigating and find out that there's another human who lives nearby, and they go to confront him in case he was the one who abandoned the baby. Simon is of course stricken at the accusation, but the misunderstanding is cleared up and, of course, eventually it's decided that he'll take care of Finn. (I picture the dogs being reluctant to part with him at first, but then Simon overhears that they're demon hunters and is like OH ACTUALLY I'D BE GLAD TO TAKE HIM IN, IN FACT I INSIST! I HAVE A LOVELY--and safe!--HOME HAHA... MAYBE YOU AND THE TWINS CAN VISIT HIM SOMETIMES THOUGH. WON'T THAT BE NICE)

Anyway I don't know exactly where it'd go from there but there's so much you could do with this AU

Obviously Finn and Jake are still best friends even though they're not actual brothers, because they're, like, literally canonically soulmates. And being around the dog family would be more than enough for Finn to pick up his same old reckless adventurer tendencies as before, despite Simon's best efforts to keep him out of trouble. This would be one of the biggest sources of conflict between them.

Marceline would of course be Finn's cool older sister figure. Getting Simon back early would have some serious effects on Marcy's character development, though exactly how that would play out would probably depend on the circumstances of his cure (and also how involved Bonnie is in the whole situation).

(I have a scene in my head where a really young Finn asks Simon why Marcy calls him by name instead of "Dad", and Simon needs to take a Moment to process the ensuing emotions.)

Maybe the fic could explore right after Finn is adopted, when Simon and the dogs are still trying to figure out where he came from. (They all become friends in the process, which facilitates more playdates for their kids later on.) Considering Finn appeared to be abandoned, the dogs would be fairly happy to move on and let his presumably awful birth parents just get bent and rot. Simon, although surprised other humans still exist somewhere, can't deny he feels similarly. But, the bear hat sparks something in Simon's memory, and when he brings it up to Marceline she remembers the ship she'd saved all those years ago. They make the connection and realize humans must have settled somewhere across the sea. Depending on what kind of fic you want it to be, they may or may not act on this epiphany right away.

Even if they save the islands for later, I think Simon--an anthropologist at heart--would recognize the importance of keeping something as culturally important as Finn's hat, if only to remind him of his heritage later. But even if he stored it somewhere, little toddler Finn would repeatedly dig it out of the closet and insist on wearing it, until Simon acquiesced that it was just going to be Finn's thing. Like Hambo and a security blanket all wrapped in one. With another human around to model himself on, though, I think Finn would eventually stop wearing it as an actual hat all the time and instead maybe just drape it over his shoulders like a hood or capelet.

I imagine Simon would insist on some sort of homeschooling for Finn, at least part of the time, because I just can't picture Candy Kingdom schools being up to his standards, let alone anywhere else in Ooo, lmao. Plus this way he'd be able to teach Finn about human history and culture without worrying about the truth getting mixed up or lost to time. For the most part, though, Finn would haaaaate formal education, which Simon would find baffling, as a lifelong nerd academic who surrounded himself with fellow nerds academics.

So yeah, as Finn grows and it becomes clear he's not cut out for academia like his old man, Simon has to accept that the world they live in is not the same as the one he was raised in himself, and that it might actually be prudent for Finn to learn to use a sword, if only to protect himself. He reluctantly eases up on the curfews and restrictions and gradually allows Finn more freedom to go on adventures with Jake, though he's a nervous wreck every time.

(Maybe Finn convinces him to come along sometimes to prove that it's safe, and Simon actually develops some dungeoneering skills too, in this AU? 👀 As a bonus, we get more scenes like that "I was quite the outdoorsman in my day!" moment in F&C where Simon gets to show off that he WAS a little bit of an adventurer back before the War. Optionally add Marceline on these adventures, too!)

As for The Betty Situation, it could range from "she simply died a thousand years ago and Simon has no choice but to grieve and move on for his new family's sake" to "the way he's cured in this AU plays out similarly to the episode 'Betty' except something goes wrong and now she's on Mars/trapped in a time bubble/whatever and Simon has been lowkey desperately searching for her in all his spare time when not actively taking care of Finn."

I WISH I had the discipline to write this into a proper fic. I WISH I wasn't so chronically indecisive and that I could at least pick a direction for it to go in, lmAO. I couldn't stop thinking about it all day today, ugh, I had to at least toss it out into the ether and share the concept. Ever since we saw Finn and Simon’s little failed camping trip

I’ve been thinking a lot about this scene in ‘Prisoners of Love’, the very first Ice King episode in the whole show.

Because like… even this early on, long before Finn even heard the name ‘Simon Petrikov’, he already recognized that Ice King probably needs some serious help. But being a young child and a ‘simple dude’, he can’t give Ice King the help he needs - and he knows it. He just kicks his ass and rescues the princesses basically because he’s painfully aware of the limits of his emotional maturity. 

And now, Finn and Simon are genuine friends and he’s actually the first person Simon really confides with about the fact that he still needs help

And while his child self was sure he couldn’t help Ice King, he’s now honestly believes (or at least wants to believe) that he can help Simon

And he tries so earnestly to help, from the bottom of his heart, and he still fails miserably and he doesn't even realize it!

On some level because he’s still that ‘simple dude’, but he actually had a better understanding of his limitations as a child than as an adult. And on some level because he has grown more complex, but in the sense that he now has a fuck-ton of his own trauma and grief that he has no idea how to handle.

And it just says so much about how far these two have come, and how much Finn grew and matured since the start of Adventure Time and how much things changed - and also how much they’ve stayed the same. And like, even about the nature of ‘maturity’ in general. Y’know, what does it mean when Child Finn at his very childish knew his limitations so vividly - while as an adult he denies them?

But I’m also thinking about the last part of Finn’s ‘Prisoners of Love’ dialogue - the part where he suggests that the Ice King could talk to Jake. Especially when everything about Finn and Simon’s F&C interactions happens very obviously under the shadow of Jake’s death.

Now, I was never really quite sure that ‘Prisoners of Love’ Finn was right about Ice King needing to talk to Jake. I think that was more of Finn idolizing how wise and mature his big bro was. Because, like, Jake kinda alternates between genuinely giving a lot of good advice and between just saying whatever makes excuses for his many personal vices. Plus, he always had less patience and sympathy towards the Ice King compared to Finn.

Including that very scene! That’s literally shown in the next line of dialogue!

But, maybe if it was Finn and Jake together - the combination of Finn’s sympathy and genuine drive to help and Jake’s wisdom and good advice could've helped a lot more. And also... it is literally Finn’s grief over Jake that indirectly led to Finn’s attempt to help Simon to fail so spectacularly. So you can at least say that if Jake was around - as in if he was still alive, maybe this wouldn't have turned out so badly.

And also.......

It feels pretty notable to me that by the end of the Series, the person who did get Simon to the root of all of his Issues, possibly the most important singular conversation Simon had

was with Beth the Pup Princess. The Jake of the +1000 Era. Quite possibly Jake's literal reincarnation.

yayyyy here's some idle twain + 44 development lore...

so we are all familiar with the fact that the twain we all know today happened because of bungou stray dogs. but! he has obviously diverged a lot from that source material---like, his ability in the manga is a form of aimbot, which is crazy because now it's um. not that.

so, where DID his ability right now stem from? great question that no one asked me. i'm going to answer it anyway. right from the point i started developing "original twain" as a muse more, i sort of knew i wanted to mess around with his ability---the members of the guild at large seem to have a high volume of really bad abilities, but taking "huckleberry finn and tom sawyer" literally was um. a choice.

around the same time i was really big into conceptualizing roleswaps and ability swaps, and i had done one with twain and poe---poe's ability by default is of course sucking people into novels he wrote, so i changed twain's to be bringing things OUT of novels! this was also around the time that i had rewatched the "adventures of mark twain" claymation movie, so the idea of an ability centered around creation had also been on my mind because ooofffff...

for those who HAVEN'T seen this scene from adventures of mark twain, this is the mysterious stranger, an amalgamation of several iterations of a character that appeared in an unfinished novel of the same name. this iteration of the character follows the drafts where he's called "satan", though in this particular draft "satan" is also a child, an angel, and happens to share a name with THE satan, whereas this depiction is a much closer parallel to The Devil, From The Bible. in any case, his scene deals with the idea of playing god through creation so i wanted a creation ability.

around the same time, i ALSO joined a server dedicated to personifying the characters' abilities and was allowed to use my variant ability for twain. i decided to name this character "44" after ANOTHER iteration of this same character from the mysterious stranger from an earlier draft, though personality-wise he ended up being much more similar to this masked "satan" than anything. this is why i refer to 44 as an "angel" even though he's not btw because it's a reference to the drafts of the story where the mysterious stranger is an angel!

i'm not sure when i ended up making him have an archive, i think that happened naturally because i've always tended to focus on portraying twain as a storyteller of other people's stories, but anyway, um, we're here now.

Headcanons on how robin and Finney show their affection?

Both of them are pretty big on Touch as a main love language but Robin is also pretty set on acts of service as another main love language while Finney is more of a words of affirmation person for another main love language

I feel like Robin shows his love by rambling to Finney since he doesn’t really do that with anyone else. Robin will make food for Finney literally all the time and he’ll do literally ANYTHING for him. This includes making him dinner, making lunch for him and bringing it to school for him, he’ll help Finney clean up, he’ll help him do laundry; basically Robin will just help Finney out with anything. Finney always insists Robin doesn’t have to do all this for him but Robin loves him so incredibly much that he wants to

Finney shows his love to Robin by just telling him how much he loves him and how pretty he is. He knows Robin gets incredibly flustered, so obviously he’s gonna compliment him and be verbally sweet. Whenever Robin is trying on a math problem on his homework, Finney will sit next to him and encourage him. Finney will call Robin sweet and kinda silly pet names once in a while and it makes Robin happy. Whenever Robin thinks he doesn’t deserve Finn, he starts listing off all the reasons why Robin is perfect for him. Whenever Robin gets insecure about himself then Finney will compliment him and reassure him to help him feel better

Touch wise, I feel like they’d hold hands a lot. They’ll cuddle up on the couch while watching a movie and intertwine hands

Whenever Robin is making food, Finney will just hug him from behind and watch.

Finney is the type to kiss all of Robin’s scars and Robin almost cries from how loved he feels, since he’s insecure about every single scar he got from the whole basement fiasco

Sometimes Finney just has a tiring day, so Robin will come over and cuddle with Finney and will just relax with him so Finney can feel a bit better with Robin there

Whenever they’re having a sleepover, Robin will like hide his head in Finney’s chest to hide from the dark, and Finney will just hug him to comfort him. Robin is INCREDIBLY clingy in the relationship

Finney does Robin’s hair all the time. He braids it, puts it in a ponytail or bun, he’ll brush it, anything pretty much. Usually Robin complains when people touch his hair, but Finney is an exception
