Sirens. Rocket jolts awake with the amplified warning alarm, low and resonating over the landing deck, the piazza below, and the entire Sovereign Collective. His heart is high in the back of his mouth, swollen and bruised, and his hand lashes out before he thinks twice. It anchors itself to pearl’s wrist, seeking out the butterfly-flutter of her pulse.  The abilisks are here. 

Drax is already on his feet, half-crouched with his knives drawn. Rocket rolls his eyes, releasing his girl. “You gotta get back to the runabout,” he tells her firmly. His eyes flick to Groot. “Take her. Grab yourself a cannon f’you wanna come back—” But she’s ignoring them both, leaning into Rocket’s ear to gesture open-palmed toward a patch of fading stars. “Admiral Amyri said they should be entering our range of vision here,” she’s telling him, and he swats her away.  “Back to the runabout,” he growls. “If you can have Groot pick me up—” She looks scandalized. “I did not have him pick you up; he did that on his own—” “—then I can have him return the frickin’ favor,” he warns.

Most of my ocs feel guilty over things they have no/little control over

Catrina: Blames herself/feels guilty for Dante's death, thought if she didn't do what she did there would have been only more destruction and he would have suffered longer (would have still died if she was there or not). This guilt/self blame was only reenforced by her ex husband who continuously made her blame herself.

Odette: Blames herself/feels guilty for Ephraim losing his sight. If she didn't fly that day he would still have his vision, but it was Ephraim that wanted to fly with her that day in the first place. He doesn't blame her, he lost his sight protecting her.

Aegus: Feels guilt over Galatea's sacrifice and her current situation. She protected her dad til the end, but he couldn't lose both his wife and daughter so he begged the gods to bring her back, without knowing how she felt about it all. He views her current android state as a selfish wish of his

Anyways I think it's so funny when ppl say that their tav was doing some mundane shit when they got wormed. Like my main guy got alien beamed up or whatever when he was doing groceries.

I think an interesting part of building a LARP character, or at least the way I prefer to make LARP characters, are those traits that sort of form naturally either in the development process or during roleplay.

And Amyris has several of these because I've had them for so long. They've gone through a couple iterations before being the character they ended up being, and they've also aged and grown as a person within this current iteration.

One of these quirks is while Amyris comes off as a very uncomplicated, lighthearted character, they're actually a lot smarter than they might seem. They're never the most or least serious person in a room, and what I mean by that is they'll be the comic relief in a tense situation, but they'll also be the voice of reason if everyone's being sillygoofygrimbo and someone needs to point out "hey we have a job to do."

And for the most part, this was just something that developed naturally.

For one, I the player, am a very shy and awkward person and improv freaks me out. So it's easier for me to play a character that isn't too intense and isn't the main character leading the story. Amyris is also a monkey who sort of acts like it and has these huge round glasses that make me look like a cartoon character so it's very easy to be like "oh joke character."

But Amyris has never been a joke character. They just can make a joke. And this is what trips people up. Because I've picked up pieces to a puzzle not realizing they're puzzle pieces just to play with while the "smart" folks do the work, only to realize "wait a minute, these fit together" and then I'll solve the puzzle. And it's completely in character because Amyris isn't dumb, they just don't come off as smart.

This is an extra fun dynamic to play with outside of my home game (which is a boffer LARP, so very low RP and much more emphasis on combat.) so while I'm pretty mid at stick by Amtgard standards, I go to a lighter touch roleplay heavy LARP and I come across as this sweet little furry idiot character who likes to plant flowers and then you stick me on the battlefield and I'm shouting war cries, pushing to the front lines, and taking on men who are twice my size and armor class.

And the reason it's fun to me is because I didn't write Amyris like that. Actually, when I wrote them they were a very young person traveling outside the place they grew up for the first time. They didn't know how to hold a sword properly and was just as timid as I actually was. But that was 5-8 irl years ago depending on how you slice it. As I became better at fighting, Amyris became more confident. And now they're a Paragon and a Lord and are someone people come to for guidance. But their base personality never changed. They're just a Little Guy but now instead of holding a sword like they're hiding behind it they'll cut your legs off. Easily.
