as that last ball dropped on the court, there was absolute silence. it wasn’t clear whether that was because everyone was still processing what had happened or if it was because one side was shocked at how horribly this game had gone. or, more specifically, one boy was in shock at how horribly he had played.

then she was approaching him and his heart dropped amongst the squeaks of shoes against the floor, his teammates getting ready to clean up while the other team congratulated each other.

he had been nervous all day, nothing had gone as he planned. he wasn’t able to pull her aside to talk to her all day which had left him walking in the dark. he had no idea when he was going to be able to talk to her today but he knew he didn’t want to run away.

but he had been so nervous his hands were clammy and shaking, his legs didn’t move like he wanted them to, and his mind was preoccupied by other things than volleyball. 

“tooru, can we talk?” she was in front of him, and he felt dizzy for a moment. but this was the present, and this was the only chance he had.

“please,” he said, sounding more urgent than he meant to, but he had been dying to talk to her all day.

her brows furrowed with concern before she began walking towards the doors of the gymnasium and he followed behind her quietly.

he looked around the gymnasium. kuroo had his arms crossed and was giving him a stupid grin from the other side of the net. matsukawa and hanamaki had smug smiles on their faces as well, and iwaizumi only nodded.

he sighed quietly to himself, sometimes his closest friends were the biggest teases in the world and no help at all.

they walked outside to the parking lot behind the building, the sky was turning a dark blue and purple as the sun was setting. he was so distracted by it he didn’t see her stop and turn around to face him.

she grabbed his hands to get his attention, and his heart twisted as she looked up at him. “hey, you’ve been acting off all day, are you okay? is something bothering you?”

he didn’t know how to respond, so many words and feelings were bubbling up in his chest and getting stuck in his throat. “yes,” he started, placing his hands on her shoulders, “you.”

her lips parted a little in surprise, “me? i’m bothering–”

“yes!” he exclaimed, somehow they had ended up moving farther back and she was up against the side of the car, “you…i’ve been trying to grab your attention all day. and i’ve been so nervous because i have something to tell you but you were so busy so i’ve been waiting and i just kept getting more nervous so that’s why i messed up this game so bad.” he looked away for a second, mumbling under his breath, “you’re lucky i love you.”

y/n blinked, he was building up to whatever he was going to say and it was making her more nervous, but this had been her fault. she had kept telling him to wait whenever he said he wanted to talk. “i love you too, tooru. what did you need to tell me?”

his face warmed as he looked back at her. she thought he was saying it as a friend. she was really going to make him say it. he groaned, leaning closer to place his forehead on her shoulder, “no, not like that. and iwa-chan calls me the idiot, god…” he pulled back to look her in the eyes. “i love you, yn. when bokuto was talking about how i liked someone he was talking about you. i like you.”

“oh.” she turned red, feeling like her entire body was paralyzed as she looked at him.

he kept going, taking his hands off her shoulders to run them through his hair, “and it’s okay if you don’t like me back, iwa-chan and kuroo said you might but i’m still so scared maybe you don’t.”

the silence that filled the space after that almost made him pass out, his heart was beating so erratically he couldn’t calm himself down.

then she spoke, “no i…i like you too, tooru. i’ve just been so scared these past few years–”

then there were lips against hers and her legs almost gave out. he pulled back just an inch, and her eyes were lost in his. “shut up,” he murmured, lips still close enough that they brushed against hers as he talked. “don’t believe anything i said when i was younger, unless it was a compliment about you. i was stupid back then.”

he kissed her again and she sighed against his lips without even meaning to. all the stress and heartbreak that had welled up in her finally leaving. her hands found their way into his hair, pulling him closer.

when they broke apart, he had a hand on her face, his thumb rubbing small circles into her cheek. “when you got distant however many years ago, i realized how much i needed you with me. and i’ve just continued to be stupid until now because i hate being apart from you. i want to be with you,” he spoke, his breathing a little labored.

she kept her hands on the sides of his head, keeping him close, “i want to be with you too, tooru. i’ve wanted to for so long, and i promise i’ll never get distant again.”

“good,” he pulled her in tightly for a hug, resting his head on her shoulder, “i’m going to keep you to that promise.”

“i wouldn’t dare break it,” she replied, returning the hug.

they stayed entwined in each others arms for a little while longer before she saw something out of the corner of her eye.

she saw a few heads peeking from around the corner and sighed, drawing lazy circles across tooru’s back before she pulled away from the hug.

“makki and mattsun, you can come out. and who is that? kunimi?” she called out.

the three boys stepped out guiltily. “we weren’t spying, promise,” hanamaki began.

“iwaizumi sent us out here to check on you guys,” kunimi continued, looking unbothered by the arm tooru had wrapped around their manager.

“can we go home now, mother? i’m tired,” matsukawa complained, kicking his feet at the dirt. 

y/n broke out into a small smile, looking at the bunch, “of course, loves. let’s go home. sorry we took so long.”

we know nekoma and seijoh are teams that emphasize a strong defense, which is what makes them such difficult opponents for karasuno, but what really intrigues me is how both teams revolve around their setter in ways that other teams don't, and yet i feel like nekoma and seijoh couldn't be more different in terms of how their team is built around their setter.

at nekoma, the team is built in a way to make playing as easy as possible for kenma. kuroo has his little speech about how they're the blood, and they need to flow smoothly in order for the brain (kenma) to work properly. kenma may guide them, but the team moves to support him, to be there when he needs them to be.

as for seijoh, oikawa builds the team himself. he's their captain, their leader–he even runs practice. whereas nekoma revolves around kenma, oikawa leads his teammates. he matches his plays to their strengths, using them as best he can, demanding that they make themselves available where they need to be.

the setter may be the control tower of the team, but each control tower is different.
