Daily fish fact #849
Elasmobranch fish!
Tumblr media
Fish of the subclass Elasmobranchii, like sharks and rays, have a large liver full of low density oils — they use this liver to maintain their buoyancy in the water column! The liver can be so large as to be up to 25% of the fish’s body weight.

close ups on those shark paintings!
[ID: A series of five paintings, all hung on a blue wall. They are all of the heads of hammerhead sharks and all canvases are in a portrait orientation. The first painting has a blue background with dark blue squiggly lines. There is a light blue border framing the canvas with green dots going around it. The second painting has a yellow background with purple dots. The shark is larger and takes up most of the frame. There is a light purple border framing the canvas with a dark purple squiggly line on it. The third painting has a solid bright orange background and a bright blue border framing the canvas. The fourth painting has a brown background with grey and peach blob shapes. There is a lighter brown border framing the canvas, decorated with yellow and blue dots. The fifth and final painting has a green background. This background is decorated with lighter green and brown blob shapes, as well as blue and gold dots. The canvas has a yellow frame around it. The yellow frame is decorated at the top and bottom with green squiggles and the sides with orange squiggles. The sharks in the center of each painting all have the same style of eyes that look human, as well as the same blank expression.]

The other night at trivia, there was a question about Moby Dick.
While everyone considered their answer, the DJ played "Remember the Name" by Fort Minor.
The moment I heard those opening strings and the steady, solid, wooden cadence of the beat as my mind thought of a surging ship over a cold, gray sea broken by the white flukes of foam and leviathans...I need a new Moby Dick movie made As Soon As Possible, and I need that song over a whaling montage.

I realized I never posted these altogether, so I'm fixing that now.
For recent followers, this is a series of marine animals I did last summer in an attempt to combat artblock. One of the best ways to fight artblock is just to...well, practice stuff you're not good at. And this little series forced me to work on animals, which I'm not terribly comfortable with, as well as mediums that I wasn't fully comfortable working with or using favored mediums in new ways.
The crab, shark, seapig, and penguins are oil pastel. The seal is gouache. The blue glaucus and the Mandarin fish are colored pencil. The sea otters are alcohol markers. And the moose are watercolor. They're also a joke piece because 1) moose are known to swim from island to island in the Salish Sea and Puget Sound and 2) my favorite animal.
I'm kinda feeling like I might do more of these someday. Maybe one of animals of the Pacific Northwest this time around.
