i was genuinely killed by the fact kabru's real name being "unknown" is due to him not being able to remember how his mother used to call him. and now i can't stop thinking about this child trying so hard to remember his loved ones only to have the most grotesque images come to mind. as we read the manga the only glimpses of his life in utaya we get to see are those tragic moments when he lost everything, and i find it interesting that the first time us readers get to know of his past at all is through him being triggered by food.

but then we get to chapters 61-62 and for the first time during the story, he mentions the memory of something other than the horrors- and in direct parallel to earlier in the manga, it's a dish his mother used to cook. the guy who is shown to have a hard time taking care of himself in his pursuit of his goals is forced to focus on someone else's wellbeing which also results in him making more effort for his own sake as well, and so in an attempt to care for and comfort someone else he ends up trying to recreate one of the few fond memories he has left. and it's so simple; the memory of a child and mother sharing a meal together. it's so incredibly sad but also comforting, hopeful in a way- her voice, her touch, her face, they're all out of reach now. he may never remember his mother lovingly calling his name. but there is one thing he can surely still feel even all these years later: the taste of the food she worked so hard to make and put on the table. and it's not just him. through senshi and marcille as well as other characters, we see it time and time again. how among many other things, food is also a way to preserve your home. to preserve your love.

I met up with a friend of mine today for coffee today, and we got onto talking about disability communities online (mostly TikTok) And about how much pressure there is online to be happy about disability, in particular wheelchair use.

The videos we both get recommended are excited people making happy smiley "come with me to get my first wheelchair!" Type Videos, And people talking about how great it is to use a wheelchair. And how much the narrative is pushed that any negative feelings towards using a wheelchair must stem from internalised ableism , and expressing them publicly is almost "letting the Community down".

And we were talking about how we both felt almost guilty that our experiences have been different from that. That we find our chairs cumbersome and difficult and wish we could go without them. About how we’ve both sat alone crying about hard it is to be disabled when we got to the point of needing a chair, and that getting our first chairs wasn’t a particularly happy experience or one that we wanted to draw lots of attention to.

So I just want to say if you hate your disability or the fact you need a wheelchair then that’s a very normal reaction to have and not wrong to express. If you describe yourself as “wheelchair bound” or “confined to a wheelchair” then that’s your right to do so. And If you’re in treatment right now to delay or prevent eventual wheelchair use then that’s a perfectly legitimate goal to have for treatment, and if you end up needing a chair later down the line any feelings you have about that are understandable, whether that’s relief or grief or a big mix of everything.

Happy 9th anniversary to the game that changed my life. Here’s to 999 more.

Not quite two years ago, in December 2022, I posted one of my first pieces of digital art. Today, in celebration of Undertale’s 9th Anniversary, I did a vague redraw of it. (Leaving some characters out because I put this off too long and ran out of time lol)

Okay but I can very much see a scene where Eddie heads over to Buck’s place to hang out and after knocking fifty times in a row Buck answers the door very out of breath and his shirt buttoned incorrectly. Eddie’s kinda oblivious to it until Tommy comes downstairs a few seconds later clearing his throat and trying to get his collar to lay correctly and that’s when Eddie notices the hickey on Tommy’s neck. He realizes he’s interrupted… something and goes to leave. Both Buck and Tommy try to tell him it’s fine, they can all hang out, but Eddie says he’s got somewhere to be (he doesn’t) and leaves anyway.
