It's hard to believe Angela Lansbury didn't get an Oscar nomination for her delightfully over-the-top portrayal of the sozzled romance novelist--but at least Anthony Powell got one (and won) for her delightfully over-the-top costumes. This is the outfit in which we first meet Salome, and it really tells us all we need to know about her: she's flamboyant, eccentric, and fond of lavish detail. This is her idea of an evening dress.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream- Gwendoline Christie as Titania

This was such an interesting production of Midsummer...I was able to see it while it was streaming during lockdown, and it was a ton of fun!  They re-worked the show a bit, and so instead of Oberon using the flower on his wife...Titania uses it on her husband, and Oberon falls in love with Bottom!

The dress she wears in the show is absolutely stunning.  I love that shade of green on her and the embroidered flowers are beautiful, especially in how they are offsetting the one shoulder top.  And it’s really cool how the go from being embroidered on the bodice, to hanging at the waist, like a belt.   And the volume of the skirt and train really emphasizes her height and makes her so regal and powerful.

Not-a-Dress November   Much Ado About Nothing - Beatrice (Catherine Tate)

This is my favourite version of Much Ado for many reasons! The 1980s costumes are definitely one of them, (Hero gets to wear a perfect recreation of Princess Diana’s wedding dress!). I love this outfit of Beatrice’s. The practical, slightly tatty dungarees seem very her, and I like that she pairs them with a cute, floral gypsy top. The belt cinches the whole thing together and gives the dungarees some shape. Interestingly, at some point they changed when this outfit appears, as these photos are from the opening scenes, and in the filmed version, she wears shorts and a vest top, with this outfit appearing later.

When it was time for Emma's and Niall's birthdays, they decided to host a double birthday party for their combined family and friends. It was a huge celebration, so much so that they had to add chairs to the table, and even then, there were not enough places to sit. Thankfully, during the party, every one was constantly on the move, viewing the house, helping with food, and entertaining Louis, so nobody missed out in the end.

The party was great fun to be had for all. It was so much fun, in fact, that Emma had barely noticed that one guest was missing from the group.

I'm currently sewing a dress & yesterday I realized that I've intentionally made virtually every aspect of the process more difficult (fabric is plaid that needs to be matched, keyhole back changed to invisible zipper, zipper then requires a facing be changed to a lining, added piping to the collar & hem, etc.). I've also decided to bang out a last-minute Xmas sweater that involves carrying 3 colors for most of the knitting. Lots of questions for past me.

I started watching Hallmark Christmas movies during the pandemic, so I only have a few years under my belt, but I'm not loving most of this year's batch so far. Maybe I'm just trying to watch them when I feel too cynical but it feels like there's more than usual that stretches my ability to suspend disbelief for some of these plots, characters, and tropes.

Cody’s I drew on the 20th so I’d have time to like make a final version as a painting or an inked drawing with markers added in. Smh. The narcolepsy won.

August: Fantasy & Sci-Fi

Star Trek (s3e5, "Is There in Truth No Beauty?") / Diana Muldaur as Miranda Jones

In this episode, it appears the costumer has cleverly saved money and given the character's costumes a unifying look by using the same beaded net overdress with three different underlayers. In her first and final appearances, the underdress is made of green and blue printed fabric with cap sleeves coming to little points over the shoulder. Next is a sleeveless blue dress with a gathered neck; it is similar to the green dress from Mission Impossible that I featured recently, and this may not be a coincidence, as the relevant episodes of both shows aired in 1968. The final underdress is black with long sleeves.

Since each of the underdresses complements different colors in the beaded net layer, it really looks different every time!

ETA: I've been reminded that the overdress is actually a sensory net, as the character is blind. I admit I had forgotten that detail about its functionality. That's what I get for not taking the time to do a full rewatch when taking screencaps!

June: Weddings

Sense and Sensibility- Kate Winslet as Marianne Dashwood

It’s a pity that this dress is only in the movie for about two minutes, because it is so gorgeous!  I didn’t even know this dress had a train until I saw the display photos.  I love the color of the fabric, it really gives the impression of something made out of gold...and also demonstrates how Marianne has moved up, socially, marrying a man much wealthier than she is.  

I love the delicate embroidery and that stiff collar...I read somewhere that the dress was trimmed with straw, but I haven’t seen anything that supports that.  And that bonnet with her veil is so cute!  I’m glad they didn’t cheat with a more “traditional veil”.

And I have to give a shoutout to Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon, looking very dashing in his military uniform!

Anything Goes December Emerald City - East (Florence Kasumba)

I haven’t seen this show, but stumbling across this costume has sparked my curiosity. It looks so cool in motion! The feathers around the collar look great and create a dramatic silhouette. I’m not sure if those are gloves or jewellery, but they look amazing.
