For Migrant Children in Federal Care, a ‘Sense of Desperation’ (NYT) In a federal shelter in Dallas, migrant children sleep in a windowless convention center room under fluorescent lights that never go dark. At a military base in El Paso, teenagers pile onto bunk cots, and some say they have gone days without bathing. And in Erie, Pa., problems began emerging within days of the shelter’s creation: “Fire safety system is a big concern,” an internal report noted. Some of the hot water heaters were not working, and lice was “a big issue and seems to be increasing.” Early this year, children crossing the southwestern border in record numbers were crammed into Customs and Border Protection’s cold-floored, jail-like detention facilities. Navy Cdr. Alok Anand said 183 people were rescued within 24 hours by three ships and helicopters engaged in the operation. Cyclone Tauktae, the most powerful storm to hit the region in more than two decades, packed sustained winds of up to 210 kilometers (130 miles) per hour when it came ashore in Gujarat state late Monday. The storm left at least 25 dead in Gujarat and Maharashtra states. The Hindu newspaper Wednesday tallied more than 16,000 houses damaged in Gujarat state and trees and power poles uprooted.

Immigration In Japan Under Pressure (NYT) For months Japanese jailers said they ‘thought’ the young migrant from Sri Lanka was faking her illness, even as she wasted away before their eyes before dying alone in her cell. Wishma Rathayake had a lifelong fascination with Japan. She entered the country in the summer of 2017 to study Japanese at a school in the Tokyo suburbs, hoping eventually to teach English. She met another Sri Lankan student in Japan who became her boyfriend. Sadly, after a series of unwise decisions, unfortunate events, and a now-expired residence permit, she found herself in a detention center a few hours south of Tokyo, awaiting deportation. It was August 2020. While in detention she was threatened by her ex-boyfriend, now back in Sri Lanka. She thought she’d be safer in Japan, and with the encouragement of advisers at START, a local nonprofit, she decided to try to stay. That move irritated officials at the detention center, who demanded she change her mind. In late December Wishma fell ill with a fever. Within weeks she was having trouble eating, standing, and speaking. In late January 2021 a doctor prescribed her vitamins and painkillers, but they made her even sicker, so she filed for a provisional release. Detention centers had already released hundreds of healthy detainees due to coronavirus concerns, but in mid-February Wishma’s request was denied without explanation. She submitted a second request on medical grounds; by this time she was so weak she could barely sign the form. Despite the severity of her symptoms, officials waited until March 4 to take her to a hospital. Two days later the 33-year-old was dead. Japan has a long history of hostility toward immigration. Many of us know Bhandardara camping, as it's one of the most common and beautiful destinations for all the weekend lovers from Mumbai and Pune. So in case you are a nature lover and want to make yourself anxiety-free or want to get rid of your office work then this place is what I will recommend.

Sunset View (Bhandardara) Bhandardara is full of surprises which is gifted by mother nature. One can see the milky way from the naked eyes and can see n number of stars in the sky( start gazing) which we definitely cannot see in cities like Mumbai or Pune. What is Bhandardara exactly? Bhandardara is a holiday destination near Igatpuri, which is situated in the western ghats. This village is located in Ahmednagar district (Maharashtra). This place is about 185 kilometers from Mumbai and about 172.7 km from Pune. It sits by the natural environment of the Pravara river with the beauty of waterfalls, covered by the mountains. One can also visit the nearby tourist attraction like Wilson dam, Artur lake and Randha falls, and Kalsubai (which is the highest peak of Maharashtra). Why Should One visit this place? Well, there are two possible ways to visit the place. One is by road and the other is by local or express train. If you plan to visit this place by road by your own vehicle then you can take the NH-3 as it is 180km from Mumbai and 172km from Pune by taking NH-60 as this is the more preferred route as there are many other places which you can visit as per your schedule. Now once you reach the Goti toll post you have to take a right turn from where Bhandardara is at a distance of 30km. If you don't have your own vehicle then don't worry as you can also take a state transport( which is known as ST) from Kasara bus stand which will take about 3 hours to reach the destination which is Bhandardara Gaon at just Rs 60/- or else you can take a bus from Igatpuri bus stand which will take around 45 min. Tips:- Don't go for taxi as they will charge you 500/- If you have a tight budget then you can take a Local train from CSTM to Kasara (Rs30/- per person) and from kasara you can take the express train as there are 12 trains(check the availability and timings of the train in advance itself) which are running between Kasara to Igatpuri on daily basis. The first train that travels to Igatpuri from Kasara leaves at (00:35) is Kushinagar EXP(11015) and the last train from Kasara to Igatpuri is Shalimar exp(18029) which leave around (23.55). But your own vehicle is much more preferable as there are many other places which you can visit on the way.

Camping Pocket friendly stay? Bhandardara is known for its camping and if you wish to see the stars and want to take a beautiful sunset view then go for the lakeside camps There are a lot of camping options available which you can choose according to your requirements and budget. I had visited this place individually so I had booked the camp there itself but you can do pre-booking as well if you are visiting in a group. I had selected the hillside for my camp from where I was could look over the Bhandardara lake. When I got my tent it looked smaller from outside but it was good enough from inside for 1 person. Even the washrooms available, but it's just that they are a bit far away from the campsite. I will also be sharing the name of a person with his number at the end of the post on which you can book the camp in a price range of 800/- to 1800/- per head ( Food Included ) and what surprised me is the fact that in this price you can also go for trekking. Places which you can visit nearby? You can visit the well-known places of Sahyadri that are Sandan Valley, Kalasubai, Ratangad, Wilson dam, Artur lake, Randha falls and Harishchandragad which are nearby where trekking can be done with the help of local guides.

Campsite food Best food to eat? I will recommend Local food rather than having the Chinese variety because in local food you will get the typical spicy taste of the village food. You will get both variety of food like veg and Non-veg for lunch as well as for dinner (Don't worry the prices of the same are included in the tent amount). Vegetarians can enjoy Roti / Chapati / Bajra, Rice, Dal, Vegetables, Chatni, Kheer, Salad, etc and for Non-vegetarians, the menu includes Chicken Fry, Chicken Gravy, Fish Fry, Fish Gravy, Mutton, Egg Curry, Salad, etc. In the morning they even provide snacks along with tea, coffee, and biscuits. So, in short, you don't have to worry about the food as you will get great home-cooked food with proper hygiene. Sports and other activities? You will get Barbeque, Campfire, Lake boating, Forest trail along with stargazing in the night sky( Package). The organizers of the campsite are good and friendly. If you are pre-booking the camp online then you can ask the organizers to do the arrangement according to your requirement ( only on a special occasion ). It's was peaceful visiting this place, beautiful sunset location covered with mountains from all sides and pretty clear starts twinkling at night with cold weather, clear surrounding, fresh air, and the most important thing is that it is away from the polluted cities. This is one of the best camping experience which have brought me more close towards my passion and life. Last mile support...

Riding on a bike in Mumbai, you tend to learn how to weave through the traffic - zigzagging the bike to ensure you are always ahead and save a minute or two. What the bikers do with that extra minute is not known to us but it just gives you the kick to be right in front of the traffic by cutting lanes and overtaking from whichever side that pleases us!

Many years back, I had gone to see off one of my uncles who was leaving for a vacation with his family. They were to catch a train from Bombay Central station in town. When I reached, they were rushing since there wasn't much time left for the train to depart and they were still at their Byculla residence.

They got down, took a taxi and suddenly my aunt realized she had forgotten something - I don't recollect what, but she did forget something. Since they were getting late, I suggested that my uncle leaves with my cousins and then I can drop my aunt on the bike. My uncle left in that taxi.

My aunt went up, started searching what she wanted - it took almost 5 to 10 minutes to find and then we got down to finally leave for the station. I used to ride a Hero Honda Splendor those days and it had brakes which didn't apply when required!

We only had 20 minutes for the train to depart and we had to make the bike journey from Byculla to Bombay Central. Looked difficult considering I had to be mindful of the speed with my Aunt riding pillion and sitting one sided (the usual way that females sit on the bike). We weaved through the traffic around Clare Road, Nagpada - I perhaps had to jump couple of signals near Maharashtra college too to be able to make it to the station.

We finally reached Bombay Central station. My aunt got down and I literally dumped my bike in a corner and we ran inside. The train had just started to move and we would see it departing - my aunt ran faster but in the process, broke her sandals. With sandals in her hand, running as fast as she could, she still managed to catch the train and entered a different bogey. She made it to her compartment eventually by the time the train left the platform. I was running in parallel and was there when she reached her seat and waived them a good bye!

Being on the bike that day helped deliver the last mile support needed at that moment...
