OnlyOneOf ‘Dot Point Jump’ Album Review

A dark horse remains in the shadows until they find the perfect moment to burst onto the scene and showcase what they have — and OnlyOneOf seems to be the dark horse of the new generation’s rookies. They have proven to be quite a capable group, as well as distinct from the rest of their competition. A lot of the time people cite only “savanna” as a good release even though this entire album has quite a few unique and outstanding songs. In a similar manner to Loona (who also had Jaden Jeong as their creative director), they impress with their title but excel in keeping the people interested through their b-sides. 01. “OnlyOneOf You” With “OnlyOneOf You” they make a very pleasant intro into the album, although it’s not short, as most intros are, it’s really easy on the ears while also incorporating the standard electro tunes found in a lot of other K-Pop intro tracks. The singing isn’t jaw-dropping but it’s very stable and calming with an easy-going type of feeling throughout. It showcases their modern sound while also making a distinction between members with all of them singing in their preferred tone. I wish the final chorus was more outstanding, because as it is, it builds up well and then just continues in the same way as the other two did. This isn’t a giant con, but it definitely caught my attention.

Rating: 4/5 02. “Time Leap” As the title suggests, “Time Leap” pays homage specifically to early 2000s music, with a garage band type of sound being implemented. It is a nice homage but it also takes a lot from the original, with the song itself not feeling very unique but instead sounding dated. The rappers get more of a showcase in “Time Leap”, which is nice as their rapping is fairly good. Their attempts at unison throughout the song vary from ok to pretty bad, which could also be attributed to bad mixing but the parts weren’t very enjoyable nonetheless. I found myself nodding my head while listening, despite the many flaws, and the track having this rare retro sound also gives it points on my side. 

Rating: 3/5 03. “Savanna” Now this is how you debut a rookie group. You give them a title track that stands out from everything else currently on the market, and make it so that even the people listening aren’t sure what to think. The first time you listen to this song, it might sound off-tune or like it’s all over the place, but every consequent listen gives you another piece of the puzzle and lets you enjoy it more. The song perfectly showcases the savanna theme through tropical sounds, slow singing and a high-tempo beat. These three things combined, specifically with the boys solid singing in a very relaxed matter, allow me to imagine myself travelling through the savanna, admiring the tall grass and beautiful wildlife. Something that must be mentioned is how well the melody instills the feeling of serenity without boring the listener.

Rating: 4.5/5 04. “Blossom” Recently, many groups have been doing the bloom/blossom/flowering theme and this is very similar to them. Fortunately, the rap line have time to shine again with more rapping all-around, their parts also serve as a contrast to the happy-go-lucky singing in the rest of the song. This song seems to suffer from bad mixing and too many sounds overlapping, which overloads the ears at times. The only real thing that differentiates this from other similarly themed tracks is how aggressive it is in showcasing the blossoming, this aggressiveness also ends up having a lot of screetching and lacking an actual highlight moment to enjoy.

Rating: 2/5 05. “Picasso” Artistic is the main theme of this song, showing off their sexy side through artistic expression and mixing their voices with a deep bass to emphasize individual voices. Having a backing echoing synthesised melody keeps the song feeling relaxed and smooth sounding. All of their voices go well with low-tempo songs, and with their voices periodically being edited, it pulls you further into the song and its cool vibe. The arrangement of the song is pretty good as well, with it shifting the melody very nicely while also keeping their voices balanced.

Rating: 4/5 06. “Fragile” Once again, the song follows its theme perfectly. The opening piano sounds beautiful, and the hushed lead-in ideally builds up the chorus. The drop itself, besides being so well timed, has the addition of a very melodic phrase sung in a way that stimulates your ears. It’s so sudden and catches the listener's attention immediately, without having to rely specifically on an increase in volume. The theme of being fragile, and the sudden shift in sound fit so nicely with one another. Although it might seem like quite a simple thing to do, it’s quite creative and worthy of high praise. I really can’t overstate how much I enjoyed this song, definitely my favorite of the album.

Rating: 5/5 If you're interested in listening to this album, check it out on Spotify, or the dot point jump playlist on YouTube. The album follows each of the individual tracks themes to a T. It really shows that a lot of effort was put into making these tracks. While every song may not be a masterpiece, the majority of the tracks are quite enjoyable. I have to say this album is really a hidden gem in a plethora of other albums that, a lot of the time, aren’t as colorful and flavorful as this one is.

Ellos dijeron que los grupos rookies sin miembros para programas de audición se ha vuelto realmente raro que debuten.

Considerando a Kang Hyewon, quien debutó con IZ*ONE y ganó popularidad es normal debutar a OOO.

 P: ¿Cómo te sientes acerca de tu debut?

Love: No puedo creerlo. Estaba frente a mi debut después de años llorando, riendo y luchando por el mismo sueño… Estoy nervioso y emocionado. Trataré duro de brillar en una nueva presencia de Kpop

 P: ¿Durante cuánto tiempo te has estado preparando para tu debut?

Love: Han sido cerca de tres años desde que hemos estado trabajando juntos. Personalmente, he sido trainee durante seis años… Originalmente, me especialicé en música vocal durante mis días de preparatoria y vine a Seoul en la edad de veinte. Desde que era un niño, amé cantar trot frente a mi padre. Desde entonces, mi sueño fue volverme un cantante, pero mi padre era muy estricto que no pude. Cuando cumplí veinte, hablé con él cuidadosamente, y después de recibir su permiso, me preparé para ser cantante.

 P: Love es el líder, pero el mayor es KB. ¿Hay alguna razón por la que Love se volvió el líder?

KB: Soy el mayor, pero yo (recientemente) vine a esta compañía. Love también se convirtió en el líder debido a su liderazgo. Me preparé para ser un oficial de policía antes de estar aquí. Originalmente, mi sueño era ser un comediante. Cuando estaba preparándome para serlo, entré a la compañía. Mientras practicaba, aprendí a hacer música. Quería presentarme en un escenario con mi música y darle buena música a la gente. He estado en el ejército…

 P: Por favor, presenta a tu álbum debut.

Love: Tenemos dos canciones principales. “Time Leap” y “Savanna”. “Savanna” es de un género Minimal House. Latin, mumbatone, melodías vocales rítmicas que son atractivas. “Time Leap” es un género de pop alternativo. Es una emocional, sensible canción lírica. Nosotros también la produjimos. Hemos producido dos canciones, “OnlyOneOfyOu” y “Fragile”.

 P: Por favor, explica el concepto de Ubersexual.

Rie: Ubersexual es un hombre que luce fuerte en el exterior, pero es blando por dentro, expresamos esto en las dos canciones principales. Traté de mostrar un look sexy en mi rostro, también traté de mostrarme desahogado y afligido en el lado blando. (Podrían ser otros adjetivos). Practiqué mucho mientras veía fancams de otros cantantes.

 P: ¿Hay algúna razón por la cual eligieron (el concepto de) Ubersexual?

Nine: Este concepto fue hecho para diferenciarnos de la belleza de chico que los grupos presentan estos días.

Rie: Hay algo que hemos estado buscando, y queríamos mostrar diferentes imágenes de los grupos idols de estos días.

Love: Creo que esto es un arma, pero vamos a mostrarles una variedad de colores, géneros y música. Hemos estado preparando la coreografía. Podemos mostrarles un montón de cosas.

 P: Los nombres de los miembros también son únicos. Nombres como “Yoojung”, “Love” y “Rie” son, comúnmente, usados como nombres de mujeres.

Yoojung: Yoojung es un alias. Soy delicado en carácter y baile, así que ahí hay un lado suave en mí. Creo que esa es la razón por la que soy Yoojung.

Love: En mi opinión, es un buen nombre una vez que lo escuchas. Estaba un poco avergonzado la primera vez que lo oí, pero lo recordé la primera vez. Puede quedar fácilmente en la memoria de la gente, y estoy satisfecho.

 P: ¿Hay miembros con otros antecedentes?

Rie: No grandes cosas, pero hice algo de actuación. Entonces aprendí cómo bailar porque la situación no fue buena. Si tuviese la oportunidad, me gustaría actuar otra vez.

 P: Ubersexual es el concepto, ¿Qué miembro es actualmente masculino?

Mill: Hice algunos juegos de pelotas. Prendí soccer y baseball. Nadé y aprendí un montón de deportes. Yo incluso jugué soccer porque estaba inscrito en una asociación de atletas.

 P: He oído que ustedes tendrán un evento de baristas. Por favor, expliquen esto.

Rie: Seremos baristas en el 8D Café.

Nine: Nos dividiremos en equipos y rotaremos. Kyubin, Love y Nine estarán en el mostrador, mientras el resto de los miembros harán el café.

 P: No han debutado oficialmente aún. ¿Tienen muchos fans?

Nine: Solo hemos abierto el fancafe oficial, y estoy muy de que cerca de cien personas se inscribieron.

 P: ¿Acerca de alguna crisis antes del debut?

Rie: Escribimos letras, melodías, creamos coreografías, y todos los conceptos de las canciones fueron evaluados por nosotros… En principio, esto fue difícil porque yo no lo hice, pero como tuve más feedback, mis fuerzas se derritieron (?). Mejoré cuando encontré qué tipo de presentación podía mostrar. Me di cuenta de que, si decidía un tema, podría trasmitir el significado. Éramos capaces de llegar hasta aquí, tomando las fortalezas y partes en las que somos buenos.

 P: Así que, ¿Cuáles son sus fortalzas?

KB: Mi fortaleza es producir. Estoy tratando de ayudar al grupo con eso. Y soy bueno imitando y en la comedia.

Rie: Hice coreografías. Mi posición es liderar la coreografía. Está hecho para ver quién puede brillar bien (?).

Junji:  Con cualquier canción que pongas, podré bailar bellamente. He bailado krump desde que estaba en la secundaria.

Love: Como el líder del grupo, lidero a los miembros.

Mill: Nosotros hacemos nuestro propio rap.

Yoojung: Mi fortaleza es el baile. Aprendí a bailar de pequeño. Así que mi línea es bonita. Soy bueno en bailes de grupos de chicas. Soy bueno imitando animales como jirafas y avestruces.

Nine: Yo hago beats.

 P: ¿Tienen modelos a seguir?

Rie: Conocí a Yunho de U-Know en persona antes, y él me dio muy buenos concejos. Lo conocí en un evento de bandas militares. Me dijo que no me rindiera y lo haga bien, así que continúo recordando eso.

Mil: Quiero ser como Winner o iKON. Tuve un sueño mientras audicionaba, y vi mucho de “Win: who is next” y “Mix & Match”. Sería un honor conocerlos.

 ¿Objetivos específicos?

Nine habló sobre que su objetivo era completar canciones. Ellos querían incluir sus canciones en todos los álbumes que saquen a la venta.

 P: ¿Palabras finales?

KB: Nos gusta música distinta, así que nos ayudamos mutuamente. Nosotros podemos escuchar y tratas diferentes géneros/presentaciones. Ubersexual es también diferente de otros grupos de idols, así que eso nos hace atractivos.

The OnlyOneOf's brain rot came, I ended up posting mostly about them and so I decided to change it!

I went for something as simple as possible: I chose OnlyOneofyOu because 1. I love the song; 2. it has the name of the group in it so it may be more easy to stumble across ;) all I had to do was to add more "u"

I like to keep everything organized and divided by topic so I'm the type of person to make 84587 different sideblogs if needed lol

I make friends easily and I can have chemistry with people, but it's hard for me to develop romantic crushes in general and it takes me a long time when it happens (hiii, hello, demiromantic here!)
