Cinema Starview Presents: May The Best Father WIN!
Bruiser is one of those movies that it’s hard to really watch because of how much you want to side with one person over the other, even though the person you’re siding with isn’t really the best person. It’s a movie about fatherhood, toxic masculinity, being a black father, and the intensities of two alpha men trying to fight for the love and respect of their son. And the son trying to figure out who he is, who he wants to be, and how to become a young man without having to take on the toxic ways of both his father figures… the poor mom just is stuck between both her ex and her husband (who were all childhood friends).
The movie kind of hit home to me personally as someone who has struggled with daddy issues, having my dad in my life, and also just the feeling as if I’m not as important to him compared to his other family he created. So many of us deal with this new sense of “family” with having broken homes or homes where there’s a step parent involved while another parent is away doing something else. I respect all single and repartnered mothers who try to make things work, as my mom has, and the step fathers who try to step up to the plate when our seed donors leave us.
All I can say is that, Bruiser is a beautiful movie and I loved it, through out all its intensities. Honestly, I mainly watched for Trevante Rhodes no shade lol. If “Bruiser” was turned into a series or got a theatrical release like “Moonlight” I could see Trevante really getting some awards for his performance.
