(with @canarypoint :p)
bea waking up in a hospital bed, blinking drearily as she tries to locate ava
shes not by her side, which is odd.
her head lolls to the other side of the room, ava's prone body on the cot beside her, just out of her reach.
her heart thumping faster in her chest every second ava doesnt even so as much as twitch.
ava. just laying there. why isn't the halo healing her- why isn't the halo-
"ava," she breathes, desperate gasps tearing themselves from her throat as she reaches for her lover.
she can faintly hear machines beeping faster. "no. no, no, no, ava."
there's an i.v. in her hand, preventing her from reaching any further. she yanks it out with a stifled gasp.
she rips off the oxygen mask, wanting to plead, "ava wake up, i'm here, i'm here."
there's a sharp pull in her side as she tries to heave herself off the bed. even just sitting up makes her woozy, the room floating in front of her eyes.
it's just a couple steps, she can make it.
her foot hits the ground, going out from under her-
"BEATRICE!"
her head slamming into the bed frame on her way down leaves her vision doubling.
"camila," she groans, slumped against the bed, fading fast, "ava-". dark crimson trailing down the back of her neck, warm and slick.
"fuck, she hit her head," she hears camila say, as blurry figures rush in from the doorway, lilith right behind.
"language," she croaks, trying desperately to control her heavy eyelids.
it feels awfully similar to the time she got tranq'd.
except ava isn't here, with her mighty healing powers and brilliant brown eyes.
"ava," she groans, as they maneuver her back onto the cot. a stutter in her breath when her side pulls, shooting tendrils of pain up and down her torso.
"i know, i know," camila whispers, gently placing the oxygen mask back over her face with a worried glance at the sister warrior. in the corner of her eye, lilith depresses a plunger, and it all fades to black.

Hi (and happy holidays!) amazing author! While Tom was infested, do you think Jake tried any ways other than the phone call to reach him? E.g putting on a movie he really likes, playing his favorite music?
Thank you! I think I mentioned this in a fic, but. My headcanon is that, after the end of #31, Jake and his parents visit Tom in the hospital. And the yeerk would be all "I'm fine, go away" which Jake's parents would listen to... but after they all walk out of the room, Jake goes running back there on impulse and pulls Tom into a hug. It seems out-of-character since Jake's not a tactile person, and we pretty much never see him hug even family members. But Jake knows how close they came to losing Tom, knows after the events of this weekend that they're probably going to lose him still.
The whole time Jake's hanging on with his face buried against Tom's chest, "Tom" is shoving at him and telling him to get off. But the yeerk can't exactly escape, with a leg in traction. And Jake's pretty sure that Tom would be hugging him back, if he could. And he's 100% certain that, right about now, his big brother really needs a hug.

will there be a day when scenes autistic people having major shutdowns and grappling with the pressure to push through vs how unbearable it actually is and the excruciating kindness of someone who Gets It doesn't make me want to cry and wail ans throw up? unclear
