Sorry if youve answered this before but ive seen you around and im curious, how long have you been writing for mash? Ive seen some fics on ao3 with old dates, but then I realized the dates on ao3 go back before the website was even founded so I thought I ought to just ask you directly

I first started writing M*A*S*H fanfic in 2003, inspired by Iolanthe.

I wrote two big sagas - Sins and Virtues, and the MirrorMASH sequence - and a bunch of shorter stories and a lot of drabbles for the old MASH100 community on livejournal. Then I ran out of steam - Iolanthe had died: I was losing interest in M*A*S*H and was entering a dry period for writing fiction, due to various reasons in my personal life. The very last story I wrote about any of the M*A*S*H characters was about Father Francis Mulcahy, who had a small part in a completely different series of stories. About 2021 I started reading MASH fanfic again: in 2022, I got the idea of moving Iolanthe's stories to AO3 - and then I thought, if hers, why not mine? Plus, I was getting a new big idea for a Ten Years Later story that would become All We Know. While I was thinking this through, I even added a few more chapters to MirrorMASH, and planned out the ending.

So in 2022, while I was finding out how to archive Iolanthe's stories, I also archived mine, and just for the sake of it, I archived them all with their "date posted" the date I wrote them, or finished them anyway. Sometimes for the old print stories this was kind of guesswork, but I'm pretty sure I got the year right.

I've been writing fanfic for 40 years now, so a lot of my stories go back to before AO3 existed - before the WorldWideWeb existed! but AO3 lets you change the date posted to any year in the 20th or 21st century.

Josan wrote some of my favourite fics; the ones I often turn to when I want comfort. Josan's novels were written at the turn of this century. They belong to the first era of Harry Potter fandom; they were first published in Angles Fire, then in LiveJournal, and some of them are inAO# thanks to the Open Doors programme.

I chose the idea of a wall to remember some entrances to the Wizarding World. I placed the cauldrons as a nod to Snape, the central character in all of Josan's novellas.

I added by way of foreword an old Livejournal community entry discussing Josan's curious writing style. Not only are there interesting comments in it, but it's a way of showing in the physical book that fandom is a community of readers and writers; also, that Josan's novels have been beloved not only by this bookbinder.

The endspapers are plain dark brown, without any design. The Snape of Josan's stories is austere, and I wanted the book to convey that. There are several things I've done for the first time in this book: It's the first time I've done a book this big and in two volumes. I have never embroidered the headpieces before. Nor had I ever tried htv on canvas, never had I combined drawing and lettering; even less in two colours (although this was small, see the cauldron on the book's spine).

I dunno if everyone is aware of the Open Doors Project by the OTW (AO3 people)

We are the Open Doors project, dedicated to offering shelter to at-risk fannish content. We have several subprojects and rescue efforts aimed at archiving and preserving different kinds of fanworks and artifacts of fan culture. Our mission is to preserve fanworks for the future while respecting their creators.

I bring this up because fanfic has been a tricky subject for the Vampire Chronicles fandom and there are probably some old, small, or underground collections of fanworks out there from while Anne Rice was being threatening. If anyone knows of these, now would be a great time to let Open Doors know about them!!

Basically, this lets old fanworks be imported to AO3 while crediting their original authors and making them searchable by original collection/location

Especially with the Wayback Machine under threat, it would be great if we could get anything that's out there to safety! Open Doors also works to preserve print fanworks like zines or formats like yahoo mailing lists

The archiving and backing up of fandom is one thing I am a little bit passionate about and this was an interesting article about it.

This was my favorite paragraph from this. Specifically because it says that all fanfiction, fanart, etc., is worth preserving. So remember that when you wonder if what you're doing is worth it.
