I've talked a bit about Ratio's parents in passing before, here and here with his backstory, but I want to go a little more in depth with them.

Alexandros Costas, his father, is a humble fisherman of humble origins, with dark curls and maroon eyes. He's a man of few words and many thoughts, one that others might not expect to be as much of a romantic as he is, and yet he was successful in wooing the lady Cassandra Leone as a young man on the port, to whom he is still very happily married, and with whom he sired a son (that's Andreas!). He was the one to primarily foster Andreas' curiosity in the natural sciences, and would not only point him to the stars but tell him of the sea and the intricate balance of the ecosystems and weather. He never had much formal schooling, coming from a family of fishermen, but the knowledge he has is deep and borne of experience. It is largely because of Alex that Andreas grew to have such a deep fascination with evolution and animals.

I mention here the ties Ratio has to the Italian Renaissance, with the Philosopher's Union and its legacy holding the Ancient Greco-Roman inspiration, and with his mother I think this most strongly comes into play. Cassandra Leone was born to an aristocratic family in one of the the larger port cities of their home planet, a shining beacon of art and trade. Growing up she received a decent education and learned many of the arts, sculpting and pottery among them, skills she would eventually pass down to her son, who would also inherit many of her looks. But perhaps what she was most known for in her heyday was her singing; in her prime, she was a fairly renowned soprano in opera. From Cassandra, Andreas developed a fascination with physics and chemistry, stemming from acoustics and the kiln, as well as a deep love of the arts as a testament to human existence and pursuit.

One could say that his parents' love is a fairytale romance; a chance encounter on the port, one that left sparks and led to Cassandra leaving her opulent city life for a humble one by the sea. And it is with this love that Andreas was born, and with which he was able to foster his curiosity so freely, and the rest is history. Now, thanks to the efforts of their prodigious son, they're both more or less retired early -- but neither of them will tell you this, as Alexandros still goes out to sea, and Cassandra still creates art and occasionally accepts invitations to perform at theatres. Neither of them are quite ready for the retired life quite yet.

The same family that used to live at the Cardiff Castle in Wales. The interior is just as whimsical and beautiful like Cardiff Castle. A lot of referrals to astrology and mysticisms.
