Fully just intending to ramble here so don't expect an articulate essay. I'm just thinking about Shadowheart right now. Also I'll tag but major spoilers below the cut.

The amount of childhood trauma this girl goes through. Not only is she physically and mentally abused she's raised as someone who is supposed to idealize this way of living. Instead of looking and seeing a person across the room she inherently knows every way she could physically bring them harm and a slew of ways she could possibly figure out how to do it emotionally.

It just makes me go insane a little at the thought of how many times she'd probably dread going to the mirror but also maybe welcome it? The thoughts of hurting people would go away, she wouldn't feel that guilt anymore. Wondering what must have been going on inside her mind during all of that. Growing up in a place where she was encouraged to fight and hurt but disciplined for caring for an animal.

I think the fact that she's gone through all of this and still has this core of her fighting it so hard while you travel with her. The way that she can lean into kindness and caring. Things that are basically sacrilegious to Shar. Idk I'm rotating her around in my head and I can just picture this constant fight and confusion. Talk about someone who's constantly at war with themselves, but never stopping moving forward. She's such a survivor, and I love her for it.

did you know that the well-known factoid that male anglerfishes degenerate after attachment until they’re basically just a pair of testes is false? i knew of course that they don’t just become “growths” on the female because I’ve handled dozens of attached pairs and every male I’ve ever seen has been very much obviously a whole and complete second fish, but I sort of assumed there was internal degeneration, perhaps muscle atrophy, etc. i can’t believe no one ever corrected me on this but this just doesn’t happen. in obligatorily parasitic species, the male actually continues to grow and increases considerably in size after he attaches to the female, because the two of them can only reach sexual maturity together. me, an octavia butler fan: is this the height of romance??

what is true is that attached males do have hugely enlarged testes proportionate to the rest of their bodies & organs, and that they receive all nutrition from the female’s bloodstream so their stomachs are always empty, though their own gills seem to still be functional, as are their fins and muscles—you can even induce movement and swimming motions on recently dead attached males. I can only assume that at some point someone said that basically the only biological function a male anglerfish needs to perform is sperm production and this got taken out of context and luridly exaggerated over time. he’s not just a pair of testicles! he’s her forever partner! one flesh one end!

yes, doctors suck, but also "the medical ethics and patient interaction training doctors receive reinforces ableism" and "the hyper competitive medical school application process roots out the poor, the disabled, and those who would diversify the field" and "anti-establishment sentiment gets applications rejected and promotions requests denied, weeding out the doctors on our side" and "the gruesome nature of the job and the complete lack of mental health support for medical practitioners breeds apathy towards patients" and "insurance companies often define treatment solely on a cost-analysis basis" and "doctors take on such overwhelming student loan debt they have no choice but to pursue high paying jobs at the expense of their morals" are all also true

none of this absolves doctors of the truly horrendous things they say and do to patients, but it's important to acknowledge that rather than every doctor being coincidentally a bad person, there is something specific about this field and career path that gives rise to such high prevalence of ableist attitudes

It shows how negatively he thinks of himself after his fight with Shuro, and how even if he worries now that he's a nuisance to people/can't fit in, NOBODY PERCEIVES HIM THIS WAY. Danny Phantom was such a stupid and frustrating show because they'd use a weird random moment to dump some of the wildest lore on you and then NEVER touch it again. Oh yeah there was a group of ancient ghosts strong enough to seal away the literal manifestation of war and brutality but anyway here's a fart joke. Sure there's a syndicate of living (?) eyeballs that manipulate existence from the sidelines and also a ghost that's a literal god of time but who cares about that when we can joke about being a vegetarian. A billionaire made his fortune because he literally got ghost powers in college in a horrible disfiguring accident and he's making clones of his ex-friend's son because he so bitterly alone but whatever here's five jokes about the Green Bay Packers and we're gonna turn that dude into a running gag now.
