In one of my playthroughs, my Tav is having a TIME with Astarion, and it's a version of his romance I don't see represented online as much and I want to talk about it.

If you choose more lightweight dialogue options, if you don't dig into his mind at the bite scene, if you get his Araj confession instead of his impromptu one,

Then by the end of Act 2, you do *not* have a secure relationship AT ALL, he has never said he's in love, and everything feels REALLY rocky.

All through act 1 he lays on the seduction heavily, but in act 2 a bitch is MAD. He is stressed, he needs to figure out his scars, he feels hunted and un-safe and because of this, he starts to take it out on Tav a bit.

SPOILERS FOR ACT 2:

when Raphael shows up to talk to him, he snaps at Tav saying "don't get in my way". When you do his quest and kill the orthon, you have to PRY a thank you from him by literally telling him to parrot your words ('thank you for helping me, it was very... Kind') and he spits it out like he really, really wasnt intending to say anything in the form of gratitude.

When you talk about what to do about Cazador, my Paladin chose 'youll never be free while he lives' because it's true. If he runs, cazador will hunt him. If cazador lives, he will never stop looking over his shoulder. His reply 'i hate that you're right'

Even when you say you'll join him to hunt his master down, you can watch his facial expressions and see: he's not convinced. Of course he isn't. He's terrified. And is he grateful? Yes, but again, it's guarded.

I then went to moonrise and talked to Araj, and I defended his autonomy 100%.

When his Araj-confession happened, it was absolutely NOT a LOVE confession. It was more like:

"thank you. This made me realize I was still acting like a slave even in freedom, and you supporting me there made me feel like I can start to snap out of that kind set. Sooooo... I should tell you, since you did me a solid, that I was using you for protection and manipulating you up until now"

If you DONT choose the top options, the MOST he tells you about how he feels about you is a single line of dialogue

'imagine my surprise when I started to actually feel... SOMETHING... For you'

This could be friendship, crush feels, etc. It's VERY vague, and important things to note is while WE THE PLAYER know more about him and what he may feel at this point or what he's gone through, YOUR TAV DOESNT.

He does not apologize for using you. He states his regret that his plan failed because he started to value you as a person instead of a tool for him to be used. That admission is his gift back to you for defending him in front of Araj.

If you then choose 'what do YOU want' he approves, but says he doesn't know. And then he defends that 'isnt it nice not to know?' You still get soft faces, your hand held. He's trying to *silently* communicate what he can't bring himself to say, but he *DOESNT* SAY anything to affirm you two are a couple/in a relationship/etc. Just a vague 'lets not talk about it but see where it goes'

Honestly, based on this experience via dialogue choices for this character, it almost seemed to me like "sounds like you need a friend not a lover" makes the MOST SENSE. Of course this is my Astarion Romance run, so my Paladin instead said, basically, I'll wait for you until you're ready. (She chose the 'what do you want,' and let it lay there as is)

Afterwards you can ask about your relationship with him and again, he's flustered, he's hedging, he's defensive, and he brushes it off. He's not ready to talk, he's not ready to commit, he's fully focused on Cazador and his safety.

You enter this waiting period where Tav has been manipulated, spoken down to, snapped at, bitten, and responded to without gratitude, but is ALSO given just the faintest, BAREST glimpse at the vulnerability beneath the surface. The player is being asked at this point to REALLY trust and WAIT without ANY evidence that this relationship could become healthy, or could turn into love, or could because a real relationship. And that's SO NEAT

If you don't romance anyone else and aren't put into the position to choose him, you never get a confirmation of dating. If you get the Araj scene and don't choose hug, and don't force him to confirm he was attracted to you etc, you can literally end the talk on "thanks for defending me, also haha I was using you this whole time just so you know, thanks for being nice about it"

From a Tav point of view, this *could* be fairly devastating, and even if Tav decides to wait and keep supporting him, at this point, even post "confession" there is VERY little evidence that things are gonna get better between you.

We know it does. WE do. We get the access to other dialogue and choices or the other confession IF we chose that. But this, this scene, these dialogue choices REALLY emphasize his Act 3 confession

"you were patient. You waited, through blood lust etc /even when it was an objectively stupid thing to do etc"

Cause yeah. He's RIGHT. If you don't choose VERY specific dialogues to get more out of him, most of his romance up until the Act 3 confession,most of how he treats you, most of how he responds to your decisions in game (if you're playing fairly good and not evil/durge) gives Tav no reason beyond faith to continue to pursue him.

I think he knows this, and it's why he's surprised when you state you don't want him for sex. Because up until Act 3, he KNOWS how he's been treating Tav and even HE wouldn't have stood for it if the roles were reversed, so h thinks 'it must be because I'm good in bed'. Then he takes the sex away and you still stay? Even when he's chasing power, hunting for revenge, snapping at you, refusing to commit?

It's a powerful story line. It's so engaging. And it has room for SO MUCH ANGST

I'll make him a big summary post once I've settled on a design I like for him, I'm stuck up on if I want him to be smooth or spiky. So here's a little doodle page + some casual notes

Me: "I'm not a fan of projecting real world culture onto BB redux cats,and if I ever was giving a character an in universe accent it would specifically be to give the smartest character on screen a very thick northern english one to stick it in the face of the way southern english accents are associated with intelligence"

BB!Crow is pretty different from canon

My Crow is a very passionate guy, it's never lost from his young warrior days. Many of the late Po3/early OotS moments where Leafpool is confessing her love in front of his wife and children are from him to her instead

Mudclaw and Torear are some of the best cooks in WindClan during the late Thistle Period. Crowpaw was super close with his mentor Mudclaw, and picked this up from him

For the Great Journey, Crow mashed up his personal collection of mealworms to make tunnelbun rations for everyone

And SPEAKING of the Great Journey, he was already a warrior at the time. His name was Crowfoot, for his mom and dad

Both Dead and Ash were old friends of Bluestar, members of the forget-me-nots.

Ashfoot shared this with him when he was young, and also that Tigerstar was responsible for killing his dad

This feeds into some changes I'm making to have Crow be slightly less frustrating during the Journey. He's still angry, short tempered, and dramatic, but MUCH less openly antagonistic

Squilf and him are usually involved in food related escapades, youll see when I finish the notes of TNP

Feathertail's death changes everyone. Crow most of all.

Crow is an impulsive young warrior. He throws himself headfirst into things, often forgetting that he isn't the only person in the world who matters. Feathertail felt like cool water, reminding him how to slow down and take a breath

The romantic affection was mutual, but imo I don't think it would have lasted.

But no one will ever know if it will, least of all Crowfoot, who is convinced that they both died that day in the mountain

Tallstar’s final name is Crow's honor title; Crowfeather.

And then Leafpooooooool

When she ultimately isn't willing to, like, throw away everyone she's ever loved and go live in the wildnerness with him, Crowfeather loses his marbles, convinced now that Actually He is Unlovable

And still he gets with Nightcloud, thinking that he can't possibly be hurt any more, he must re-prove his loyalty after he vanished for a week... it really was a pretty knee-jerk choice he didn't think through and rationalized post-hoc

No consideration for Nightcloud here.

This post isn't about Nightcloud btw but she is actually pretty reduxed too. The fact she was involved in the raid to kill Onewhisker is politically relevant to Breezepelt later

And Breezy, poor fucking Breeze

Crow is a garbage dad. Breeze is really not in a good environment with him and Nightcloud.

Through points in Po3, before Breeze becomes the villain who kills Firestar and sees a redemption in AVoS, I am planning several moments to establish that Breezepaw is perfectly capable of being a loving cat if he was in a better life situation

To Crowfeather's benefit, age will do wonders on mellowing him out.

He does tend to struggle with compassion though, and remains a pretty harsh character for most of his life.

Crow wanted to be a Light in the Mist to even begin to apologize to Breeze, but Breeze knocks him out lmao no more Crowf worship thanks erins

Anyway. Onto design stuff

Hollyleaf and Breezepelt look a LOT like grandpa Deadfoot, but I'm not sure if I want Crowfeather to look a lot like him

I'm leaning towards him looking like Ashfoot detail-wise but have Deadfoot’s face.

Btw you can observe, here, the WindClan Tail Tuft.

Most WindClan cats have a lighter-colored tail tuft to help them be seen in tall grass, it's a feature like the ThunderClan Mane you may have noticed in a lot of my TC cats.

Ashfoot and Morningflower have a cloudy swirl on their tails, and a "whispy" sort of vibe. Deadfoot and his dad Chicorynose have a dragon-arrow.

But now that youd signed your soul off to Vox and his company you couldnt leave, there was no escape, you simply had to attend those boring meetings he hosted, You had to be there to shine his shoes, fetch him documents, keep track of sales and you despised every vile second you had to be there. Atleast the money was good?

You sat up, glancing quickly at your watch and realizing you still had a long, long time before this bullshit was over. You leaned back in your chair, and glanced over at Vox who you had’nt even realize stopped talking. He was staring at you. “Fuck. how long was he looking at me? There goes my job i guess.“ You held eye contact with him as he walked towards you. He looked pissed. He came up behind your chair, placing a hand on your elbow and leaning into you.

“Stay put when were finished with this. I need to talk to you before we leave.”

For the rest of the night you behaved. You sat in perfect posture, chiming into each topic occasionally , praising Vox for his work, all in an attempt to not get fired. He eyed you all night, keeping a close eye on you. He knew you were sucking up to him. As much as you hated this job , Who wants to get fired? Ego damage first of all, second you need money for everything that is anything. Finally eveyone was dismissed. Everyone exept for you. You sat in your seat, attentive to Vox. You sat in that chair for what felt like hours, as Vox looked you up and down.

“What makes a pathetic worker like you think you have the right to pull that shit in the middle of a meeting.” Radio silence. “Answer me, now.” What were you supposed to say? “Sorry Vox! i just hate these dogshit meetings so much i just fell asleep!” He wouldnt take that. Noone would.“Since you dont wanna talk ill have to make you.” He bent down, eye to eye with you in the chair. His eyes were intoxicating. You didnt even realize what he had been doing. All you knew was that you lusted for him. It was like a craving only he could satisfy. You did the only thing you could think of and got on your knees, hoping to rip out any praises you could get from him.Within seconds he was stripping you down, and admiring the way you looked at him. He looked down at you, narrowing his eyes as he said the words “beg for it.”

You pleaded for him pathetically. Mindlessly. All while he gazed down at you, drinking up any whine or plead you had managed to spit out. “How pathetic of you. If you listen youll get what you want.” He pet your head like some sort of pet made for his amusement as he unzipped his pants, letting them hit the floor. only to be met with one word, “Suck.” As almost as if it was normal you immediately obeyed, taking him as he ruthlessly began to ram into you. Grunts filled the room as tears welled up in your eyes from how rough he was being “Whats wrong? cant—mnh—.,cant take it? Suck it up, whore.”

yugioh really is something truly special and an absolute blast to really dig into, but it IS a very big franchise.... forgive me for being a bit inexperienced at giving recommendations, but I shall do my best!! here's some pointers that I think could be helpful if ya wanna get into the show(s) (not getting into the mangas too much on this, for the sake of brevity LOL) (the spinoff mangas are fun reads, though!)

ok so the thing with yugioh is there are Eight Different 'Main' Yugioh Series (and a few little stray other series but we ain talkin bout those right now)--my recommendations are focusing on the first five series, since those the ones i've seen (though ive heard glowing reviews for VRAINS and Sevens and you could certainly go check either of those out if you wanted to! You don't really need to know anything about the plots of the other series to follow those stories)

as a yugioh fan i am of course obligated to recommend Duel Monsters as a starter. It's the OG, just absolute Yugioh at its most tried and true Yugioh, it Is that good, the dub and sub are both classics--but IF i am being my most honest true self, if my arc-v postin and zoneporia chattering have got ya ygo hooked then I would recc maybe taking a gander at one of the spinoff series first instead ;3

(In general what's cool about yugioh is you can basically pick up any of the series as your 'first' ygo experience to start with and have a great time with it! I know tons of people who've all started with different series/only are invested in 1-2 series,Theyre all made to be their own self-contained plots, and there's really something for everyone among 'em! you could honestly just read wiki blurbs on each series and go with whatever one sounds most interesting to you, and that's a fine start right there.) (though sometimes youll see characters from one series show up in another one, the Entire Storyline isnt Hinged on that--i.e. a bunch of alternate version GX/5D's/Zexal characters show up in ARC-V, but you dont need to have seen all those series to watch arc-v or follow its plot.) also idgaf what anyone says, the dubs are just as wonderful a watch as the subs are when it comes to ygos--you have to deal with some scene censorship or dialogue changes, but to me it doesn't really impede the experience. (in fact I almost want to recommend the dubs MORE for someone just starting to get into yugioh--it can be easier to follow the duels sometimes. AND a lot of the dubs are free on Youtube!!)

ANYWAY Z-one and Aporia are from Yugioh 5D's!! The, Last twenty episodes or so. Of 5D's. 🥴 <--the suffering nicherfaverrrr. So if you want to meet them properly you Do unfortunately have to be in for the long haul (i am of course biased and will say: Worth It.) 5D's is all around fantastic though; it has its slow spots, but the duels get crazy fun on those damn motorcycles, so even if you do buckle in for the All of It you'll have a good time--there are some chunks in the second half of the show that never got dubbed though (sad!) which is just something to keep in mind.

RE: Arc-V! since youve seen me tweetin about it, I will say, the first 50 episodes or so of it, that first season, does make for a really great crash course intro to yugioh and its worlds/how dueling works, since it touches upon all the main types of summoning as part of its plot, and talks about how they work. You get to learn about them as the characters do, which is really cool! My main hesitance from suggesting it 100% as a starter series is that it gets. fucking Bonkers. like characters from the other series showing up aside there is just So Much Going On in Arc-V At Any Given Point. IT CAN BE A BIT OVERWHELMING. AND APPARENTLY ITS ENDING IS. NOT VERY GOOD. which might not be very fun for a first time ygo experience 😭BUT BY ALL MEANS GIVE IT A WHIRL IF YOU'RE INTERESTED. I'm having fun with it at least, hehehe.

OK HONESTLY. HONESTLY. I think if I have one good recommendation to take away from all of this: watch Zexal. Zexal is a fantastic starter yugioh, I can't recommend giving it a go enough. Yuma as a protagonist starts out dogshit at the game and gets better over the course of the series, and that really helps the viewer follow along with the card game and start to understand it at a nice pace without getting confused over all the finer points of it. It does a really nice job of explaining how things work imo! It's also just, a gorgeous show. It's one of the most beautiful cartoons ive ever seen art direction wise. It's so kind and so fun and goes hard as hell and the characters are so full of love and personality. AND THE WHOLE DUB IS FREE ON YOUTUBE. BTW. BONUS.

THIS ENDED UP SO LONG SORRY tl;dr you can pretty much start with whatever yugioh sounds most interesting to you personally as your first series and you won't be missing any critical lore! Also Zexal is one of the best, consistently good and really easy to pick up. I think if you could only ever watch one yugioh make it that one.

also this is a less a recommendation and more just "little things about watching yugioh to keep in mind" but: don't let the card game aspect intimidate ya too much! the show really does it's best to explain how cards work and keeps it engaging; it's a show geared towards kids so of course it tries to keep things pretty easy to follow along, game-wise (also do not listen to the 'The Duels Arent Important' Crowd they are Wrong. yugioh is a sports anime but the sport is a card game. that's the crux of its storytelling. and it's genuinely really cool!!!) And if you're interested in giving the game itself a whirl, Duel Links is pretty beginner friendly imo!

I HOPE THATS AT LEAST SOMEWHAT HELPFUL the trials and tribulations of recommending where to start with a franchise that boasts some 1000+ episodes across 8 series is mighty but that should give ya some sort of idea!! whatever you end up going with I hope you have a ton of fun! YUGIOHHHH

im just gonna keep posting abt this fic idea bc im thinking abt it rn and ik ive talked about it before but idc. i just want tooooooo like go thru all of aftg with a highlighter and analyze everything andrew does. and all his relationships with others. which like have i already done that? p much yes im insane. but i wanna do it with a system. im gonna act like im an english lit student pulverizing a classic novel for my senior thesis. but then the REALLY FUN PART is im gonna warp the storyline !!!! because andrew's story is not neil's, and it's a slower one -- it starts when he chains himself to aaron, and yes he drops all his deals in TKM, but the story can't end until andrew actually starts to believe he can have a future without having to dig his claws in and cling to it. the story is about DEALS and PROMISES and "TRUTHS" and it's about what happens when... what does neil say..... "don't ask for the truth if you're going to dilute it".... its about what happens when youve been CLINGING to the truth but the truth doesn't feel as solid as it used to. it's about hating yourself and hating the world for making you hate yourself!!! it's about falling in love a million times and hating yourself for that too. it's about someone finally falling in love with you -- what you always wanted -- what you thought youd never have -- what you swore youd give up on because its stupid stupid stupid to keep getting your heart broken -- and it's about how it's nothing like you expected and you hate it and you hate it and you hate it and youll do anything to make sure you cant lose it. and where does that leave you? who are you if nothing you believed is true? or maybe there's a middle ground that doesn't leave you reeling? (you don't know. you've never found the middle ground before. how are you supposed to know what it feels like??)

I have a couple for these! For The Old Guard, I was really not into Book of Nile at first, but now I kinda love the idea. Them having a slow burn romance and learning to grow together??? That’s a vibe.

And for my darling Crows, I didn’t (platonically) know how to fit Matthias into the group for a very long time. This is less something that other people changed my mind on, and more just me digging around in my own little brain. Now, Jesper and Matthias are a couple of my favourite buddies! And Matthias, Jesper and Wylan as buddies. I mostly just think that Matthias Helvar is criminally underrated in the fandom, and I hope we get a spin-off/season 3– just to see all the crows together, if for no other reason.

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.

Andy and Bookerrrrrr. It’s a no for me. I think he’s been in and out of infatuation with her multiple times, but it’s a headcanon, not a ship to me.

And anything having to do with Kuwei. I don’t understand the hate he gets, but I also don’t really care about him (that sounds mean— I can sympathise with him as a character, and appreciate the role he serves throughout the books, I’m just not interested in fandomising him at all). He is a plot device that I continually forget about, and when I am reminded of his existence, especially through a pairing, I’m confused and blindsided. I wish I could enjoy/appreciate him more, but unlike the crows, who I can see as young twenty-somethings, Kuwei is firmly planted in “young teenager” energy. He’s un-shippable to me.

Ummm. I don’t really know. I feel like the second season of good omens applies— I haven’t seen the second season, and have little interest in watching it, but I see my mutuals having a grand time with it. And that’s fun!

In a similar vein, Sandman! And more specifically Dreamling! I love this pairing, but have never watched the show because Tom Sturridge makes my eating disorder very loud. But I LOVE the idea of Dream and Hob Gadling, and I still read fic and see it on my dash a bunch.

Also Red, White, and Royal Blue. It was cute, and I enjoyed watching it, but there’s A LOT I really didn’t like about it, and I enjoy it much more for its potential as an au template (👀 I am Looking at You, my friend👀). For fake countries/kingdoms, and different characters. I love how much a lot of my mutuals enjoy it, though, and I see it on my dash a lot! And I’m always happy for us queers to have a frothy and fun little romcom.
