The Rise of Glory || Chapter 4

Illusions.

❃ ❃ ❃ Flight to London ❃ ❃ ❃

Harry rests his head on my shoulder, taking a clear view of my screen and begins to read what I have spent the last hour typing out. We haven’t said much since the meeting and catching the flight; I am a little irritated with things in general and how at the drop of a hat we had to once again pack things up and go home at his convenience. I know it isn’t exactly his fault, but I can’t deny the fact that I am bothered by things. Deep down, I am still somewhat bitter that he stole my thunder and accepted a deal to branch to New York when I had the initial plan, I just couldn’t go through with it. I am not as powerful as he is or as knowledgeable, I do sometimes feel like he used that to his advantage. And, yes, what’s his is technically mine so it shouldn’t matter, but it is the principal. It was something I was doing on my own without the help of my family or the help of Harry’s business, I had him with me as support ut I had done all the plans and ideas myself, it was my incentive.

❝The purpose of this petition is to gather a sufficient number of signatures from qualified Styles & Co Owners to recall / remove all current board members (9) nine. (DPOA By-Laws: Article 8, a & b)

Immediately upon receiving the required number of signatures, the current board will be replaced with an interim board of 3 until such time as a special election can be held to vote in new members. (Interim board is not to exceed a maximum of 90 days).❞

Harry stays quiet for a minute, and I gently shrug him off my shoulder, “Do you not have anything to say?” I curiously ask. I don’t necessarily like the fact he doesn’t have much to say on the matters. He is never one to be quiet, as a CEO, he always has a booming opinion and doesn’t tend to back down from a fight, but right now, he seems to be silent.

Harry hums, “Yeah, I thought you quit.”

I glare over at him and he offers me nothing but his grin as he chuckles quietly to himself, “Or do you retract your statement of wanting to resign?” Harry smirks, he is attempting to be lighthearted and a smartass but I don’t find any of this amusing. I am quite offended by his board.

“Get rid of the board or I quit entirely.” I threaten, not wanting to be apart of a business that has a board as he does. They are useless and only do what benefits them.

Harry sighs, “Why are you giving me an ultimatum? I didn’t do anything, I can’t even vote.” Harry defends himself softly.

I know that it isn’t his fault and he is the middle man, but I expected him to stand up for me, not just because he is my husband but because he is the CEO, he hired me for my work, he knows I am good at my job and deserved more than what they did. I deserved better. I would hate for them to be treating any other woman the same way they have treated me. It is atrocious, in my opinion. A leave of absence is none of their business, my worth ethic has not been compromised.

“Find a way to kick them all off and restart it with us. Sign the petition.”

“Baby, when it is notarised and properly done and placed on my desk, I will sign it and do what I can do to make it happen.”

“I mean it, Harry.” I press, wanting him to understand that I am not joking.

I’m not doing this because they have done me wrong, I am pressing this matter because it started with them ordering him to take a leave of absence and freezing his accounts, it continues with them phasing me out, and their next step could very well be to take him down and make him forfeit the business that he has established from the ground up.

“I do, too.”

I shake my head disapprovingly, “There is no need to account to them when we are the shareholders of the cooperation, we don’t need them managing anymore. We can either wait for the annual shareholders’ meeting at the end of the term or get rid of them now, I want to overthrow them now.”

“Elle,” Harry sighs, “This is the only six hours of rest I will get, can we discuss something other than this?” Harry questions.

“Harry, this needs to be done.”

“Okay,” Harry nods, “When I get to the office, I will call the lawyers, and I will schedule the meetings so we can talk and figure out the reasons for not electing them. If we remove a director without cause, the director can sue us for damages. So, let’s talk to the lawyers, we will figure it all out, I promise. We will take the board back and have control.”

“I don’t know how you haven’t already fired them, they forced you to step down and have an interim CEO.” I remind Harry of what happened a few years ago, they forced him to step down and have Niall as the interim CEO, they froze the assets and audited everything without much of probable cause besides his physical health.

We didn’t dispute things, we didn’t take them to court or bring lawyers into the mix, they got away with everything once, but I will be damned to see them pull things again on Harry. He has worked too damn hard for his company and what he has to have the board continue to dictate things. This isn’t necessarily just about me and their treatment towards me but things have to end here before it goes too far.

“I haven’t had the time to take on firing the fucking board, between getting married, getting in a car accident, the downfall of the business, dealing with suddenly having two brothers, one dying, the other one being psychotic thanks to my father, then having to deal with my father shooting me while trying to take over my empire, and having a baby with you, I haven’t exactly had the time. As you can see, I still don’t have time but if you drop the conversation and let me spend the next few hours relaxing, I promise that I will do everything to replace the board.” Harry looks at me with tired eyes, his hand reaching over to grab mine, “I promise, Elle,” Harry assures me, offering me his sweet and reassuring smile before leaning over and kissing my cheek.

“Okay,” I agree, “But we can’t fire Niall, he gets to stay,” I instruct with a grin. There is no way Niall can leave the company.

“Okay, sweetheart.”

“And, I want Mr Seattle on the board, I like him.”

“We will see what we can do. While you do that, I am going to sleep.” Harry ends the conversation and leans his head on my shoulder, falling asleep rather instantly, leaving me to pass time on the flight. I use the time to continue drawing up the petition and researching ways to overthrow the board and legal things we can do. It won’t be easy and it will probably take a lot of lawyers meetings and perhaps even a lot of money, but it will be worth it in the end when Harry doesn’t have the members of the board making decisions for him. If we buy out some of the members and replace them, I think we can pull this off. Harry needs to take over chairmen and have the overall say when it comes to the board and decisions.

London.

I manoeuvre around the kitchen, doing my best to put the groceries away with Alex at my legs, craving my attention as if he hasn’t received any all day. Alex goes through spells of which parent he wants to cling too, today it has been me. From the moment he woke up, he has been attached to me; I’ve barely had a moment to myself. Sometimes it’s sweet to have Alex need me and want me but sometimes it gets bothersome.

I pick Alex up and bounce him on my hip and I sift through the mail that has piled up on the counter. Harry doesn’t understand the purpose of collecting mail. You collect it, you open and read it, and throw it out when it’s no longer useful, he on the other hand thinks it’s okay to just pile it on the table or on the counter whether it’s opened or not. “Harry, what are we doing for dinner?” I call out with a sigh, irritated that he’s still perched on the living room couch with his laptop. The house stays quiet for a moment and I roll my eyes at the lack of response, “great response,” I mutter, my finger slipping under an envelope and ripping the tab open to reveal yet another bill.

I hear the heavy footsteps of Harry echo off the floorboard before he’s by my side and pressing a late kiss to my cheek.

“What’d you say?” Harry questions, taking Alex from my hip, well aware that Alex has been clinging to me all day.

“Thank you for the help with the groceries,” I sarcastically begin, glancing over at him before staring back at the paper bill. “Do you know there’s this thing called auto pay on bills? It would be great to use since you don’t open the mail,” I gesture down at the pile of mail on the counter.

“Mhm, but I like a paper trail.” Harry lifts his shoulders into a shrug.

“Well, you need to start writing the checks and not leaving these bills on the counter, they’re going to end up getting lost and we will end up with no lights.” I am not sure how we haven’t had the lights cut off on accident at this point.

“I did go through the mail, I just forgot to tell you about it,” Harry shrugs with a slight smirk.

“Whatever,” I heavily sigh, “What are we doing for dinner?”

“Let’s order pizza, do you want me to get the cheque book?”

“No, I’ll do it… I don’t know why you wait for me to say something before you want to do it,” I somewhat chuckle, not annoyed too much with him. I’ve learned that there’s no point crying over spilt milk when it comes to small things in the marriage, such as, wh pays the bills and who leaves the mail on the table for the other one to read.

Harry hums and shrugs, “Force of habit.”

“I’m going to go write these cheque’s later after dinner since you live in the ’90s and won’t do auto pay.” I wink, poking fun at him for his ways.

“Paper trails are the way to go, keeps everything aligned and proper. No need for phones to do absolutely everything.”

“Whatever, Styles,” I roll my eyes and pick up the last envelope that has cursive writing on the front addressed to Harry and me. I turn the envelope over and see the flap has already been open. I take out the card-stock paper inside the envelope and look down and begin to read the invitation.

I look towards Harry and raise a brow before I hold up the invitation to his sister’s wedding. “Oh, yeah, thanks for telling me my sister got engaged,” Harry comments, taking me by surprise. He isn’t too pleased by the slightest.

I had no earthly idea about the engagement, I have been far too busy to talk much to her lately and to be quite honest, I haven’t wanted to get between her and her brother. Their relationship is rocky at the moment, they’re both as stubborn as each other when it comes to certain things.

It has been three years since the horrible December night that Harry’s father held myself, Charles, and Harry in a room at gunpoint, and it has been three years since Logan passed away tragically. With everything that happened in the year of 2021, both the good and the bad, what really strained Harry and his sister is the fact he kept secrets from her and their mother. Gemma struggled with the information of Logan and the fact Harry knew the entire time about Logan and had the chance to properly meet him, even if they didn’t always see eye to eye. Gemma began to resent Harry for his share of secrets, especially when word got around about what happened on that December night. After that night where she nearly lost her brother and I nearly lost my husband, the love of my life, Gemma began to take a turn for the worst and began to go back to her old self, the old Gemma that I first knew when Harry and I started to date. Slowly, she began to find herself at the bottom of a bottle and put her energy towards resenting her brother and the family secrets and ties that Harry did everything to try and hide from her.

Gemma hasn’t cut all ties with Harry she calls now and again, mainly to check up on Alex and to make sure everything is okay. But the conversations her and Harry do have are usually minimal. There are times I have to force Harry to speak to her and to keep communication, unfortunately, the relationship is getting no better, it seems to be getting worse with each day that passes..

“Harry, I didn’t know about it either,” I inform Harry of my lack of knowledge about the engagement.

“Mhm,” Harry hums and shrugs, “We aren’t going so it doesn’t matter.”

“Speak for yourself and not me,” I sternly state, “Why didn’t you tell me about it? How long has this invitation been sitting here?” I question, looking back down at the invitation and trying to find the RSVP.

“Harry, we missed the RSVP,” I glance over towards him, “The wedding is two months away.”

“And I’m not going.” Harry stubbornly responds with an unrelenting stare.

“Harry, it’s your sister’s wedding.”

Harry shakes his head, “She didn’t even have the balls to come and tell me herself, she has no damn respect, and I’ll be damned to kiss her feet just because she’s getting married. She could have called to tell me at the very least.”

“Harry—“

“No,” Harry shakes his head, “If she wants to continue to hold grudges then that’s on her, I tried to protect her from everything and this is how she thanks me? Fuck that, Elle.”

“Language,” I mutter, “We can finish this conversation later when little ears aren’t around.”

Harry shakes his head, “I’m not going, that’s all there is to it. No need to finish this later, it’s done.”

Harry doesn’t want to hear my opinions or continue the conversation any further. I know if I continue it will turn into an argument, but he is making the wrong decision here. His sister hasn’t always made the best decisions with things, she has come a long way since the first time I met her when Harry and I started to date many years, she no longer finds herself at the bottom of the bottle, but sometimes she falls off the earth and forgets to maintain her relationship with Harry. They’ve been rocky for years, they love each other and would do anything for each other, Harry would lie his life on the line for her if it meant saving hers, but they are so damn stubborn and hold grudges. I see both sides of the matter, I know Harry had reasons for keeping things, he was trying to keep his family whole and safe. He didn’t want to see his mother and sister go through any distress because of their father; Harry felt the need to protect his mother and sister from the turmoil. On the other hand, I can see why Gemma would be upset and have a hatred towards Harry, she had every right to know about Logan fully, she had every right to not be kept in the dark with everything, especially with how everything almost left Harry lifeless.

“Harry—“

“No, Elle. If she wanted me to truly go, she’d have had the respect to tell me herself and not like this. This is wrong and you know it.”

Harry has a point, Gemma should have told Harry herself, even if it was a text or a phone call, she didn’t even tell me. She could ave told him she was engaged when it happened, we have no clue how, when or even who. As far as I know, we haven’t met this man she is marrying. She has never been one to bring men around, in fact, there has been one boyfriend she has managed to bring around for us to meet but it wasn’t very often. I am not even sure if the one she is marrying is the same man.

I let out a sigh, “You two need to talk it out. That’s your sister, Harry.”

“Love, you know she’s in the wrong here.”

“I am going to be blunt.” I begin.

Harry groans, “Can’t you drop it?”

I shake my head, “You have one brother you had to bury on bad terms, don’t fuck things with your sister. She is all you have.”

“This isn’t my fault, she hates me for things that aren’t my fault, I didn’t ask for the family drama. Fuck, she acts like it is all my fucking fault. You don’t even talk to your sister,” Harry reminds me of my family feud with my sister that I have barely spoken to. I don’t even think she knows Alex’s birthday, her and I parted ways years ago and it was for the best.

“Harry, drive up there and hash it out.”

Harry shakes his head, “No, I’m tired and I don’t want to leave you here alone with Alex.”

“Okay, since you don’t want to discuss your sister, feel like discussing what happened last night?” I ask, reminding Harry of what he wishes to forget.

I don’t tend to question the things he does but last night is something that is out of character for him. Harry doesn’t just suddenly not come home after work and come home at an ungodly hour after spending time at the bar.

He shakes his head, “I’d rather argue over my sister.”

“Harry, we need to at least talk about it. We agreed to communicate about things.” I sigh as I cross my arms over my chest, watching as Harry runs his fingers through his hair and look up at the ceiling, not wanting to discuss things but knowing deep down, it is for the best for us to talk.

❃ ❃ ❃ flashback ❃ ❃ ❃

I fell asleep on the couch waiting for Harry to come home. He does a lot of late nights but it is rare that he doesn't’ text or call me and tell me he won’t be home or is staying at the office or penthouse. To be honest, rarely, he doesn’t come home and at least tuck Alex in before he hurries back to the office. “Where have you been?” I instantly question Harry as I hear the door close and his shoes sound against the marble flooring in the foyer.

I hear the shuffling of Harry walking closer before his shadow appears and he throws his keys and wallet to the coffee table before his shoulders shrug off his suit jacket. “Harry, it’s three in the morning, I’ve been worried sick about you.”

“Elise,” Harry begins with a heavy sigh, “Do you want the truth?”

“What the fuck else would I want?” I respond bitterly, tired and irritated with his behaviour.

He usually texts or calls me when he’s working late, tonight I got nothing.

“I was at a bar, Elise.”

I raise a brow and cross my arms, “On a fucking Wednesday?”

“Yes, on a fucking Wednesday.” Harry nods his head, his hands reaching to his collar and beginning to undo his tie.

“You have work, Harry.”

Harry rolls his eyes and huffs out of frustration, “Who are you, my mother? I’m aware I have work. I needed a fucking drink, okay?”

“What has gotten into you?”

“Look, I don’t want to deal with this right now.”

I become quiet for a brief moment before my words slip out of my mouth before I can stop them, “Harry, are you going off the deep end?”

“No, I’m tired, I’m going to bed.”

I watch Harry as he wanders away from me, continuing to unbutton his shirt as he walks back across the marble flooring in the foyer, “Elle, are you coming?” Harry calls, a small indication that he isn’t trying to be an ass with me. I heavily sigh and know that I need to let this go and pick it back up when he is in a better headspace and can have a proper conversation with me about what his problem is...

*end of flashback*

Harry sighs as he places Alex down, “Go play outside for a minute, mate, I’ll be out in a minute,” Harry escorts towards the glass doors and lets Alex outside along with our golden retriever, London.

Harry steps over towards me and he sits down on the bar stools while I continue to sort through the mail. “Elle,” Harry begins, grabbing my attention, “I uh— Can I tell you something without you thinking I am nuts?” Harry softly begins, “Because I know how crazy it sounds.”

I nod my head, “Yes, darling, you know that.”

Harry takes a deep breath and looks outside to keep an eye on Alexander for a moment before Harry looks back in my direction, “Everywhere I turn, I swear I keep seeing my father.” Harry begins in a whisper, “And when I take a double look, he’s gone, but it’s bothering me. Elle, I don’t know how to explain it.”

“Is that why you went to the bar?” I question, beginning to put the pieces together on what has caused him to be like this.

Harry looks down in defeat and grows silent. I walk around the counter and I place my hand to his back, rubbing small circles. “He’s not getting out of jail for a while, you know that.”

“Doesn’t make things easier, Elle. I feel like I’m losing my fucking mind.”

“Drinking won’t help.” I sigh, not wanting him to go down the wrong path like his sister did many years ago.

“Thanks, Elle,” Harry scoffs, “Tell me something I don’t already know. I saw what it did to my sister.”

“Maybe you need time off work so you can decompress, I think you’re far too stressed.”

Harry shakes his head, “I have the media up my ass, now is the wrong time to show defeat, plus until we figure out a routine with you working from home and stepping down a bit, I can’t take time off.” … “Elle, what if he got released?”

“Harry, there’s no way he was released early.”

“Maybe he escaped?” Harry suggests, beginning to come up with different theories on what could have happened.

I assume there is a logical explanation for things but I don’t think he is truly seeing his father everywhere.

“Harry, you haven’t slept much lately, you need a good rest.”

“Mhm,” Harry hums, “A good rest and a good shag might fix it.”

“Don’t get your hopes up,” I playfully hit his shoulder, “Maybe if you call your sister, you might get lucky.”

“No. I’m not calling and I’m not going to the wedding.” Harry shakes his head.

I lean down and kiss his warm cheek and slowly move to his neck. “You know, it is a turn on when you’re the bigger person and don’t hold grudges… You’re so tense right now,” I leave trailed kisses down his neck.

“I’m going to that wedding, aren’t I?” Harry sighs.

I hum a response, “Now go play with Alex, we can finish this later.”

“I hope we are finishing these neck kisses later and not this discussion.”

I roll my eyes at Harry as he stands up and offers me a wink, “Go, I’ll order pizza,” I gesture towards the garden where Alex is patiently waiting, kicking his ball around.

❃ ❃ ❃

I step out on the back porch after calling for a pizza, and I smile as Harry and Alex chase each other around the garden, giggles filling the air while the fairy lights twinkle, the sun beginning to fully set as darkness begins to spread itself out. I watch the two of them playing, both of them seeming as content as can be. There was a time Harry was unsure about having kids, he thought he would never make a great Dad, he had his doubts, but with every day that passes, I see a man who has grown into a fantastic Dad. Harry does his best to always be there for Alex, he does his best to put Alex before the business. Harry makes sure to be there for important events and milestones. Soon Harry will teach him how to ride a bike and before I know it, he will be showing him how to tie his tie for the school dance.

“Careful, mate,” Harry extends his arm, grabbing Alex as he stumbles over his own feet, “Go give Mummy a hug, she looks a bit cold,” Harry gestures towards me with a smile.

Alex peers over at me with his bright eyes and a beaming smile, “Mummy,” Alex grins, rushing towards me. I squat down and open my arms for him as he runs into them.

“Ahhh, big hug,” I chuckle, wrapping my arms around Alex and picking him up, “Let’s wash up and get inside to eat.” I kiss his rosy red cheek, “Harry are you—” I begin but instantly stop as his phone begins to ring and he digs into his pockets.

“Daddy’s phone keeps ringing,” Alex informs me innocently.

I nod my head and bounce him on my hip, “Let’s wash your hands, Daddy will come in with London,” I assure Alex, gazing at Harry and gesturing that we are going inside. Harry nods his head and begins to pace along the grass while on the phone.

I take Alex inside the house and begin to clean him up, making sure his hands are clean for dinner. While I watch him wash his hands, I glance out of the glass doors where Harry sits on the steps of the porch, still on the phone.

Sometimes that phone causes more harm than good, and other times that phone has been a blessing that couldn’t come sooner. I can only hope the current phone call is a blessing, but from the way he is perched on the steps with his head hung low, I am starting to believe it is not the blessing we are anticipating.

I step outside with a blanket wrapped around me and I wander closer to Harry as his head is in his hands. “You okay?” I softly challenge and I rest on the step beside him, my hand immediately beginning to massage his back.

Harry lifts his head and takes a breath before shrugging his shoulders, “The board are trying to control New York, I need to buy them out, Elle.”

“Let’s buy them out.”

Harry shakes his head, “Baby, it’s a lot of money.”

“What are we talking about here? A couple of thousand?”

Harry laughs and shakes his head, “I wouldn’t be worried if it was a few thousand.”

“Soo…” I trail off, unsure of how much money it could take to buy the board back and create a new team.

“The average compensation package for board directors is $4.17 million. With how much money my business is worth and the fact I am one of the biggest CEO’s, they will not let me buy them out cheaply.”

“Okay, so we pay them 4.17 million.”

“Darling, it is per member we get rid of. We are looking to buy out at least twenty million,” Harry informs me.

I grow withdrawn, unsure of what to do or say… twenty million is a lot of money to fork out all at once.

“What are we going to do?”

Harry places his arm around me and kisses the top of my head, “I don’t know, sweetheart, I don’t know. It’s something we will have to talk about, we can sell the Windsor Estate, but I don’t want to do that, I only have five million in the offshore account and I don’t want to dig that up, that is for emergencies if anything happens again like my business going down or our assets being frozen again.” … “Could attempt to prove serious board director offences, such as failure to meet fiduciary duties, but that would be hard, any misconduct will be hard to prove, it’s our word against theirs, they have been in the business longer than I have— Money talks, buying them out is the best way to shut them up and get rid of them.” Harry laments, unsure of what the most desirable option is, “Could buy-in under Meyer Enterprises but they know you have that company.”

“Well,” I begin, trying to come up with a logical solution that doesn’t involve paying these pricks millions of dollars, “We could sell Meyer Enterprise, it is worth quite a bit or we could offer them nine percent each of Meyer Enterprise shares, it would still give me the overall say, they’d just own nine percent each. They’d have forty-five percent amongst themselves.” I offer a solution and Harry grows quiet for a moment.

“I don’t know, we can talk about it after Alexander is asleep, I’ll make a few more calls and talk to Niall.” … “I am sorry about being a dick last night, you deserve better than how I acted, things got the better of me, but that is no excuse. And I am sorry if I come across as an ass when it comes to my sister, I just don’t think what she has done is fair either.. None of it was my fault but I got the short end of the stick.”

“I know.”

“Doesn’t mean I should take it out on you,” Harry presses, “I am sorry, I know last night’s mistake calls for flowers and a bottle of wine— all of which I don’t have right now, but I am sorry.”

“Sincere, I see,” I gently nudge him, “The flowers are definitely a factor in whether I accept it or not.”

“I’ll pick them up on my morning run tomorrow with London.”

“”I was only joking, I accept your apology, but while you’re out, coffee would be nice from that coffee shop that just opened.” I assure Harry. “Let’s get some pizza before Alex throws his after dinner tantrum.”

Harry sighs and stands to his feet, offering me his hand, “Mmm, my favourite time of the evening,” Harry sarcastically mutters, helping me to my feet and placing a kiss on my forehead.

“Terrible two’s will be over soon, he is three in a few months.”

“It doesn't suddenly end once they turn three,” Harry laughs, leading us inside the house. I close the door behind me and turn to see Harry already heading towards the small sectioned off play area where Alex is playing with the plastic balls, rolling them around everywhere.

“Can I make a suggestion?” I ask as I walk closer to the desk that has papers scattered across it.

Harry nods his head and looks up at me, his pen between his fingers as he leans back in his chair with a sigh. “Instead of getting rid of the whole board right now, let’s go for the chairman, pay him out and you take over chairman and then we handle the others slowly and phase them out.”

Harry nods his head, “He wants a payout of compensation to leave.”

“How much would we have to pay him?”

“How much I would earn this year, my entire salary.”

“But they can’t estimate that, can they?”

Harry nods his head, “Well, with how the stock market is, as long as it doesn’t crash and as long as I keep the current investments and clientele I have, it is estimated I would have to pay him a lot more than the ten million I would be paying the other members.”

“How much are we talking here?”

“Do you never check the accounts?” Harry chuckles.

I shake my head, “No, I don’t keep up with how much you earn.”

“We,” Harry corrects me, “We earn.”

I shrug my shoulders, “By December we are meant to bring in just over thirty million.”

“Holy fuck, I could have sworn we were clearing about five million not thirty.”

“Been working my ass off, Elle, so many good investments and whatnot. He hasn’t earned thirty million to be handed to him just because they’re being assholes. There’s still tax on the money… If I hand my entire year's salary to him, one bad move and we could be broke and not be able to pay bills. If I have no income and the stocks go down, we are fucked. We need to make a decision on Alex’s school and pay for that—” Harry begins to name off the possible things that could happen and what we need to pay.

“Stop,” I instruct, well aware that he is going to go down the rabbit hole and consume himself with his thoughts if he continues to think about all the possible outcomes of what could happen. “If you’re concerned about the income, we need to sell Meyer Enterprise or part of the shares. Give him just under half of the shares.”

“He won’t want to be a silent shareowner.”

“We can sell the family assets I have.”

Harry shakes his head and transfers closer to his desk, “No, you’re not selling your family assets.”

“Maybe my Dad and Uncle can help?” I suggest.

“I am sure they might have some advice, I will give them a call,” Harry sighs before he spreads his fingers through his hair, “I’m sorry,” Harry begins, “It is always one thing after another.”

I extend him a meagre smile and wander around the desk to where he remains, “It’s okay. Years ago we were just two Uni students trying to make ends meet and now we don’t have to worry about the power being cut… Not yet, anyway,” I chuckle, attempting to lighten the mood and make Harry aware of how far he has come. Sure, it may not have always been the easiest route and there has been a lot of bumps in the road, but he has worked hard for everything he has.

Harry grins, “Those were some rough times, could barely afford to buy you flowers,” Harry laughs, “And to think, somehow, I managed to win you over.”

“Yeah, we all wonder how,” I laugh, gently nudging Harry before pressing my hand to his back.

“Thanks, babe, love you, too,” Harry laughs, “Glad I never stopped pursuing you, the best thing to have happened to me.”

“Mhm,” I hum, “I love you,” I wrap my arms around him from behind, my arms draping over his chest, “Anything I can do? Any paperwork or anything to help?” I volunteer, wanting to take some of the stress of his shoulders while I have a spare few minutes to do whatever needs to be done.

“You could help me by letting me take you across this desk… Could push everything off the desk right now,” Harry responds, his hands rubbing up and down my arms.

“Like old times, huh?” I grin, stepping in front of him and moving to sit in his lap, straddling him as his hands move to rest in the small of my back.

Harry raises a brow and cocks his head to the side, my agile hands clasping to his shirt and embracing the touch of my fingers against the fabric. Harry draws me closer into him and begins to kiss my lips while I undo his buttons, leisurely and effortlessly. While entangled in sweet kisses and mumbles, my brazen hands elect to move from their position on his shirt and investigate the texture of his body, gradually moving up and across his abs, examining his body. They progress up to his shoulders, feeling his taut steely muscles before taking their time in wandering back down. I trail down his torso before resting at his pants. “Why are you making me do all the work?” I playfully tease which causes Harry’s eyes to brighten and his lips to curve into a grin.

“Really?” He breathes. He moves my hands away from his chest and positions my hands to rest by my sides, there’s a second of silence between us before he forcefully kisses me like his life depends on it, igniting the fire between us and moving his hands under my shirt and bringing them to dance their way to my front, “Uh-ah,” Harry hums, not permitting me to move my hands to caress against his chest, “Don’t do any work,” Harry urges, his lips falling to my neck and causing my breath to hitch in my throat, “Not a damn thing,” Harry breathes against my neck before continuing to leave sweet kisses down to my collar bone, his hand gradually moving down my torso before he reaches my jeans. He unbuttons the jeans slowly and dips his fingers inside them, gently teasing me against the lace.

“Harry…” I breathe out, “Don’t tease.”

“Don’t tease?” Harry chuckles, “Not fun, huh?”

“Harry—” I begin but he cuts me off as he caresses his lips back to my neck, and I tilt my head to the side, the kisses propelling sweet tingles down my body with every fevered kiss. His fingers cease when he touches the lace again hidden under my jeans. He leisurely inches his agile fingers to fondle the lace line, delicately dipping his fingers under them, the bold caress of his tongue becoming further filled with passion, his fingers mildly teasing you by the gradual incline he takes.

We both immediately pull away as we discover the soft cries from the staircase followed by Alex calling for us, “I’ll get him and put him back to bed, meet me back in the bedroom?” Harry advances softly while I discreetly get off of him and stand to my feet.

I nod my head, “If he doesn’t end up wanting to sleep with us,” I respond as Harry stands up and presses his hands to his shirt, adjusting it and buttoning his shirt up.

“We can’t keep letting him do that,” Harry sighs and we both step out of Harry’s office and walk towards the foyer and the staircase where Alex is standing at the top, peering through the rails. “What’s the matter, Alex?” Harry questions while Alex sniffles and rubs his hands over his eyes, mumbling something inaudible while waiting at the baby gate.

Our child has figured out how to master climbing out of his cot, and it is almost impossible to keep him in his room, even in New York he would manage his way out of his cot and find us. I can only assume his separation anxiety is starting to kick in, as it happens with most children. “Time for a bed,” Harry mutters as he adjusts the baby gate and we both walk up the stairs towards him.

Harry has been on board the big boy bed train for the last few weeks, and I agree with him now. It is time, he is going to keep climbing out so it is best that he is in a bed where if he does want to get out, he doesn’t have to climb. I heavily sigh and nod my head, “You’re right.”

“I don’t hear that often,” Harry laughs, reaching the top step and opening the baby gate before picking up Alex. “What’s the matter? Hmm?” Harry hums, “Jus’ want some cuddles, I see,” Harry sighs when he gets no response and instead Alex rests his head on his father’s shoulder.

The Next Day.

The last few days have been one hell of a rollercoaster that I wish I could get off of and never have to get back on. Unfortunately, life is like a rollercoaster, there are some dips and curves we will like, and there are some that will make us wish we never got on the ride, to begin with.

I overhear the office door open, “Harry’s in a meeting,” I murmur as my eyes stay glued to the documents I’m reading. I’m not too interested in whoever is at the door; I’m just ready to read this document and go home.

I’m tired. Mentally, physically, and emotionally tired.

Harry tossed and turned all damn night and it kept me awake, too. I don’t blame him for being on edge and struggling to sleep, he has two businesses to keep afloat, a father in prison who seems to be managing to cause him hell still, plus he has the media slandering him and setting up camp outside his buildings. He got a call this morning that the building in NYC was swarmed by the media trying to pry information from his workers. We managed to hop on a flight just in time to miss the chaos last week. Harry made the executive decision to fly us back to London in the hopes to settle everything and to stay under the radar and away from the media, but it hasn’t done much. The media are perched outside waiting like hungry lions that are ready to pounce on their prey. They’re outside the building, they’re outside our house, they are everywhere and they follow us everywhere. I’m so glad that I don’t need to be at the office as much and that this is my last full day, Harry has granted me the ability to step down and work from home for the most part until I’m ready to be in the office.

“Good, I can talk to you instead, Elise,” the voice speaks and makes my heart skip a beat, and my throat suddenly feels as though it's tightening. The voice is familiar but there is no way the person should be in front of me.

I lift my eyes from the document in front of me, and for a moment, I feel as though the world has completely stopped. Surely, this is an illusion, I have to be seeing things like Harry is.

One, two, three, four… I’m still breathing... but I feel as though maybe I shouldn’t be, for what— whom— I see before me isn’t who I had intended to view.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Logan chuckles, rather amused with himself as he steps closer to Harry’s desk and waves his hand in front of me while I continue to stare at him.

I’m stunned and confused. Speechless you could even say.

I stare at Logan and my world feels as though it’s spinning and ready to crash down on me.

My words fail me and don’t come to mind as I stare at Harry’s brother who I watched bury in Cheshire.

“You’re meant to be dead,” I respond harshly.

“And you’re meant to be the nicer one,” Logan laughs, “Where’s my brother?”

“Logan, I—” I begin but I stop, shaking my head as I stand up from the desk, “Give… Give me a minute,” I stutter, unsure of what to do or say in this situation. I still feel as though my world is spinning, I am still hoping this is some sort of nightmare of hallucination.

Appradab Business asked readers how the pandemic has changed their spending and saving habits. Here’s what some of them had to say.

Paul Grim described himself and his wife, Michelle, as “more savers than spenders” before the pandemic struck.

Then Grim was laid off from his IT job. His wife, who is still working, has reduced her 401(k) contributions to free up some cash.

“We have been dipping into our emergency savings to cover our bills where unemployment falls short,” he said.

The couple, who live in upstate New York with their dog, Barley, are eating at home, minimizing impulse purchases and postponing pricey things like dental work.

“Once I am working again we intend to increase the amount of our emergency fund to ensure we are even more well-prepared for any potential future financial emergency, no matter how severe,” Grim said.

Jim Stearns of Alaska runs big events for nonprofits, including the state’s annual music festival Salmonfest. But his business dried up once large gatherings were canceled.

When he started collecting unemployment he was getting $800 a week, but that has since fallen to $200 a week, after the temporary $600 weekly federal supplement expired. Now he is tapping his savings to support himself and his teenage daughter.

“I’m spending very little as my savings slowly but surely diminishes by the day,” he said.

Stearns is less worried about himself than the hundreds of vendors and musicians he normally books for events. “I can limp along and survive. But the tragedy of this is this incredible trickle-down effect.”

Slashing expenses, saving more

Sarah Way reworked her family budget when her part-time job in California was cut back to one day a week and her husband’s employer temporarily cut his pay in half. Travel, dinners out and commuting expenses were eliminated by default because of the pandemic. But she went even deeper.

“We parked a car and took it off insurance. We cut cable TV. We slashed the grocery bill. After four months, my hubby’s salary went back to normal, but we didn’t adjust our budget back up,” Way said.

Instead, she noted, “We have increased our retirement savings and built a six-month cash reserve. We did complete a few house projects that had gone unfinished, but for the most part we are in better shape now than we were before Covid.”

Natalie Sawyer, a school administrator in Texas whose husband is a retired military officer and now a teacher, also took the pandemic as an opportunity to power-drive household savings.

“Before Covid, I spent money without even thinking about it. We ate out a lot and I shopped for things that I didn’t necessarily need. It was a kind of free-for-all with my money. Once Covid hit and [we] were forced to stay in, we started cooking all of [our] meals,” Sawyer said.

“With that in mind, starting in March I decided to put $500 a month in an interest-bearing online savings account just to see if I could make it work.”

Sawyer has saved an extra $4,200 so far. Even though she has resumed some shopping, she said, “I find myself not spending nearly as much as I used to and we’re still cooking a lot more at home. … Covid helped us realize that we don’t need most of the stuff that we were spending on.”

Karen Jones works in the cloud software industry in Oregon. Her husband, Kim, whose work is tied to outdoor concerts and fairs, was laid off early on in the pandemic, then brought back in June. But he was laid off again in mid-August.

Jones initially halted contributions to her 401(k) and put the money into their savings account. “I wanted cash that I could get to right away if needed and I didn’t have faith that the market wouldn’t slide further and negate any contributions that I made during that time,” she said.

The couple canceled vacation plans and paid off their credit cards. The extra money her husband got as a result of the temporary $600 a week federal unemployment subsidy went toward savings. Jones is also saving money on gas and lunches out because she has been working from home.

“We still eat out or [do] takeout once a week to support local businesses, but are not looking for any other big ticket activities such as vacations through the summer of next year,” Jones said.

Putting life on hold

Michelle Williams graduated from college during the Great Recession in 2008. And it was only recently that she and her husband, Sheldon, had felt financially and professionally secure enough to consider trading up to a better house from their starter home in Missouri. They also were going to start a family.

Now they’re holding off.

Williams, who works for her county’s public library, didn’t lose her job. But her husband was laid off in March. He has since found new work, but their household income is a little less than before. Still, Williams said, “We are very, very lucky.”

Normally she’d put any extra money they made toward their mortgage or student loan debt. And she had planned to start saving for retirement before Covid hit, but now all spare cash is used to create a six-month financial cushion should they lose their jobs in the next year or have a big medical expense. “I don’t know what might be coming in the near future,” Williams said.

Paying off debts

Kalikoweo Keolanui-Daniele and her husband, Louis Daniele, both work for a coffee producer in Hawaii and live in a remote area, where their home — now paid off — runs on solar power and rainwater. They also grow their own vegetables.

Neither has been laid off, but Keolanui said the pandemic has made a huge impact on their money habits.

She used their stimulus check to pay down credit card debt and put more money toward her auto loan so she can pay it off faster. Plus, she added, “I put at least half [my paycheck] toward savings and plan to continue to do this to build up an emergency nest egg.”

They’ve eliminated all non-essential spending — from recreational shopping to haircuts and beauty treatments. Keolanui did, however, invest in a good pair of hair scissors.

“I feel more and more comfortable the bigger that nest egg gets,” she said. “You just don’t know what’s going to happen. There’s so much uncertainty.”

Looking to buy a home

Gillian Needham, a mental health practitioner, and her partner, Mike Ryerse, were not savers before the pandemic. They used to spend most of their disposable income traveling from their home in Minnesota to see their favorite bands.

But the pandemic has provided them an opportunity to squirrel away money.

“Since Covid began, we have dropped event and bar attendance to zero and have been able to save nearly $10,000 in the last seven months,” Needham said. That money is now earmarked to help them buy their first house.

Looking ahead, Needham expects they’ll continue to save and not only because there’s not much they do during the cold winters. “[The longer] I do something the more it sticks,” she said.

‘Comfort shopping’

Anna Harrington, a college professor in Tennessee, has never been much of a shopper. She used to spend money on plants, concerts and theater. But since the pandemic, she’s become a kind of impulse shopper.

“I’m ‘comfort shopping’ the way that others ‘comfort eat,'” Harrington said. “I’m saving and spending the same amounts as before — I’m lucky that my job is secure. But this past summer, I bought the oddest things I never would have normally bought — a sunrise alarm clock, pink fuzzy bunny slippers, the entire Buffy the Vampire CD collection, and vintage furniture from the 1970s,” Harrington said.

“When the bunny slippers arrived, I thought, ‘What am I doing?'”

Donating more than ever

Harrington also said that she’s making more charitable contributions than ever, including donating her entire stimulus check.

So is Kristina Laursen-Carr, a substitute teacher in upstate New York with four children. She feels lucky that her family’s finances have remained stable. Her husband, Joseph, a helicopter pilot who is retired from the military, is the main breadwinner and works for an air ambulance company.

When the pandemic hit, Laursen-Carr no longer traveled to pick up their two daughters and bring them home from college every weekend. And the family didn’t take vacation this summer. So she used the money they saved to bolster their retirement savings and help others.

“The best thing we started to do was buy food [and other] items for our local food bank on a weekly basis. We donate between $20 to $30 each week,” Laursen-Carr said.

Doyle Tarver, a retiree now living in Mexico, said his income — from Social Security and savings — has remained steady. But Tarver said he has been spending more in recent months than before the pandemic to support local businesses, even if it means sometimes buying things he doesn’t need. And he’s been tipping wait staff in restaurants up to 50%.

“I feel fortunate to be in the financial situation I am in and think everyone in a position to help should do so,” Tarver said. “There are many out there who have lost their jobs or had their hours reduced and need our help.”

My Vile Ex Wife

I divorced my ex wife over 5 years ago for repeatedly cheating on me with over 13 different men and 2 women. To give you some background, my ex and I used to be swingers until the last year of our marriage. Things had spiraled out of control so I said that I was done swapping partners, unfortunately she didn't agree with me and kept hooking up with guys behind my back. Six months prior to our divorce my oldest child was diagnosed with a life threatening illness. I won't go into details to preserve my anonymity.

She started to crack under the pressure and started to drink in a lot putting herself and our children in danger. It got so bad that I moved out of the house for a couple of weeks and took our kids with me. During this time her best friend (we'll call her Amy) approached me because my ex had disclosed all of her dirty deeds to her at girls night out a couple of days ago. She disclosed that she had been sleeping with a new guy every night and getting drunk when she had the kids. She also told Amy that she went out one night a month ago and left our 3 year old and 4 year old kids at home alone while they slept so she could meet a guy. Amy said that my ex planned on filing for divorce once she drained some additional money from me while living rent free in my home. Amy and I were both disgusted and knew that things had to come to an end.

My ex hated living in the same house with me because she hated me and couldn't go mess around with her flock of desperate men. We had to come up with a plan to get her out of the house and document all of her poor behavior so we could limit her custody of the children. Step one, I moved my happy ass back into the house and plopped down on the bed right next to her. She lost her mind saying that she wanted me out of the house NOW and would call the police if I didn't comply. What she didn't know was that I was recording the audio of our conversation. I told her to pound sand and she called the cops reporting me for domestic violence. Well, the popo showed up in no time flat and had me in cuffs so fast it made my head spin. The detective came to the squad car to talk to me and I let him listen to the recording. The longer he listed the more angry he became with my wife. Before long she was the one in cuffs in the back of the squad car and she got to spend the night in jail.

She went to stay with Amy for the next week as she wasn't allowed back at our house (I got a restraining order). During this week she went on a veritable spending spree buying herself a new laptop, new iphone (full retail price) and a new wardrobe. She drained our bank account and started to dip into my savings. Amy also confirmed that she was drinking heavily at her house, to the point that she threw up and defecated on herself all over her bathroom. Amy video recorded her bender for posterity sake and provided me with 20 minutes of video showing a woman out of control drunk. The next day I went and withdrew all of our money from savings and deposited them in my new bank account so I would have money to pay the bills. I closed that account so she couldn't use overdraft protection and leave me on the hook for the overages. I closed all of our joint credit cards and transferred all of my investment accounts into an account solely in my name. She lost it when she found out that she had no money to burn through anymore. She told Amy that she was contemplating suicide because things had gotten so bad. I hate my ex but I didn't want to see her harm herself at all. Amy convinced her that she needed some help and went with her to check into an inpatient mental hospital. This worked out fantastic because she was getting some help, but also it showed that she was a danger to herself and the kids.

It was time to put the last part of our plan into action and seal the deal. I went for a consult at my attorney to start the divorce proceedings and complete the needed paperwork. My attorney was appalled at the actions of my ex and was 100% on board with helping me get primary custody. He filed my divorce decree and also got the judge to agree to a temporary restraining order until our initial hearing. We served her the papers while she was in the hospital and set the initial hearing for two weeks. The initial hearing came and she showed up with her attorney. Since it was a pre-litigation hearing they didn't know what information we had. She got on the stand and started lying her heart out, telling the judge how abusive I was and that is what pushed her into the mental hospital. She made a very compelling case and put on a Grammy award winning act. Then it was my turn. My attorney presented all of the evidence, videos and bank records. The defining moment was when my attorney called Amy to the stand to testify. She told an appalling story about a neglectful mom who was completely out of control. A story about a mother who had substance abuse issues that were only getting worse. My ex couldn't close her mouth the whole time that Amy was on the stand. She made her attorney look like an idiot as all of her lies were now being exposed and were contrary to what she told him.

When the dust settled I was awarded sole custody and she was awarded supervised visitation until she went to rehab and got additional treatment. We quickly settled out of court agreeing to a graduated visitation schedule once she complied with rehab and mental health counseling. I got the house (after paying her a portion of the equity), got to keep all of my investment accounts and get to see me kids 80% of the time. She got to go live with her mom for the next 2.5 years and jump from job to job. Life is pretty good 5 years down the road and is even better knowing that she isn't my problem anymore.

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. — The people being sued arrived at the courthouse carrying their hospital bills, and they followed signs upstairs to a small courtroom labeled “Debt and Collections.” A 68-year-old wheeled her portable oxygen tank toward the first row. A nurse’s aide came in wearing scrubs after working a night shift. A teenager with an injured leg stood near the back wall and leaned against crutches.

By 9 a.m., more than two-dozen people were crowded into the room for what has become the busiest legal docket in rural Butler County.

“Lots of medical cases again today,” the judge said, and then he called court into session for another weekly fight between a hospital and its patients, which neither side appears to be winning.

So far this year, Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center has filed more than 1,100 lawsuits for unpaid bills in a rural corner of Southeast Missouri, where emergency medical care has become a standoff between hospitals and patients who are both going broke. Unpaid medical bills are the leading cause of personal debt and bankruptcy in the United States according to credit reports, and what’s happening in rural areas such as Butler County is a main reason why. Patients who visit rural emergency rooms in record numbers are defaulting on their bills at higher rates than ever before. Meanwhile, many of the nation’s 2,000 rural hospitals have begun to buckle under bad debt, with more than 100 closing in the past decade and hundreds more on the brink of insolvency as they fight to squeeze whatever money they’re owed from patients who don’t have it.

The result each week in Poplar Bluff, a town of 17,000, has become so routine that some people here derisively refer to it as the “follow-up appointment” — 19 lawsuits for unpaid hospital bills scheduled on this particular Wednesday, 34 more the following week, 22 the week after that. Case after case, a hospital that helps sustain its rural community is now also collecting payments that are bankrupting hundreds of its residents.

“Think of me as the referee,” the judge explained, as he called the first case. “It’s my job to be fair. I’m not going to be chugging for either side.”

On one side of the courtroom was a young lawyer representing the hospital, and he carried 19 case files that totaled more than $55,000 in money owed to Poplar Bluff Regional. Three nearby hospitals in Southeast Missouri had already closed for financial reasons in the past few years, leaving Poplar Bluff Regional as the last full-service hospital to care for five rural counties, treating more than 50,000 patients each year. It never turned away patients who needed emergency care, regardless of their ability to pay, and some people without insurance were offered free or discounted treatment. In the past few years, the hospitals’ total cost of uncompensated care had risen from about $60 million to $84 million. Its ownership company Community Health Systems, a struggling conglomerate of more than 100 rural and suburban hospitals, had begun selling off facilities as its stock price tanked from $50 per share in 2015 to less than $3 as the lawyer approached the judge to discuss the first case.

“We’re seeking fair payment for services we’ve provided. Nothing else,” he said.

Behind him in the courtroom were some of Poplar Bluff Regional’s patients — a population that was on average sicker, older, poorer and underinsured compared with the rest of the United States. More than 35 percent of people in Butler County have unpaid medical debt on their credit report, about double the national rate. Most of the 19 people on the morning docket had been treated in the emergency room and then failed to pay their bill for more than 60 days before receiving a summons to court. Many of them had insurance but still owed their co-pay or deductibles, which have tripled on average in the past decade across the United States. One patient owed more than $12,000 after being treated for a heart attack. Another was being sued for $286. If the hospital won a judgment, it had the right to garnish money from a patient’s paycheck or bank account or it could put a lien against a house.

“I’m hoping to negotiate a payment plan, but I can only afford $20 a month,” one patient told the court.

“I’m late for work, so if there’s someplace I can sign, I guess I’ll just sign,” said another patient, who owed more than $3,000 after spending six hours in the emergency room for chest pain.

“How am I supposed to pay $4,000 to see a doctor if I’m barely making $2,000 a month?” asked another.

One by one the patients came up to plead their cases until the judge called Gail Dudley, 31, who was sitting with her mother in the third row. She had gone to the emergency room at Poplar Bluff Regional in 2017 after passing out because of complications from Type 1 diabetes. The hospital had given her medication to stabilize her blood sugar, kept her overnight for observation, and then sent her home with a bill for $8,342, of which she was still responsible for about $3,000 after insurance. She’d tried to appease the hospital’s billing department by sending in an occasional check for $50, but with accumulating interest and penalty fees, the balance on her account had remained essentially the same for two years.

“I’m grateful for what they did for me, and I know I owe it, but I don’t have that kind of money,” she said.

The judge gestured in the direction of the hospital’s attorney and then looked at Dudley. “Would you like a chance to talk to this gentleman for a moment and see if you two can work something out?”

“Okay,” she said. “We might as well try.”

Matthew McCormick, 27, led Dudley into the hallway to begin the same negotiation he’d been having with dozens of hospital patients each week. On Thursdays he was listed as a hospital attorney for the court docket in Doniphan, population 1,997. Mondays it was Kirksville, Tuesdays were Bloomfield, and Wednesdays often brought him here, to a 95-year-old courthouse in Butler County, where he’d represented Poplar Bluff Regional on more than 450 billing cases so far in 2019.

“We’d like to find a way to work with you on this,” he told Dudley as they sat down together in the courtroom lobby. He reached out to shake her hand. He smiled and offered his business card. For the past year, he’d been working on behalf of the hospital as the newest attorney for a law firm called Faber and Brand, which promised to “use the judicial system to recover money owed.” McCormick’s cases hardly ever went to trial. More than 90 percent of the people being sued weren’t represented by an attorney and at least half failed to show up in court, resulting in default judgments in the hospital’s favor. The rest of the patients McCormick met came into court with little to offer in their own defense except for apologies and stories of poverty, poor health, unemployment and bad luck.

“I’m real sorry about this,” Dudley said. “If I’d been thinking straight, I would never have let them take me to the emergency room. I know I can’t afford that. I wish I could pay you all of it right now.”

“Let’s make this as easy as we can,” he told her. “Is there something you can pay? A little each month?”

“I don’t have anything extra,” she said, thinking about the paycheck she earned for a full-time job as a clerk at Goodwill, which totaled $736 every two weeks. After paying for rent and utilities on a subsidized three-bedroom apartment, groceries, and child care for her 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter, she sometimes ran out of money by the end of the month.

“How about $15 out of every paycheck?” she offered, even though she doubted she could afford it. When McCormick didn’t immediately respond, she revised her offer. “Thirty? How’s that?”

“Let’s say thirty,” McCormick said.

He had more patients waiting to negotiate, so he thanked Dudley and led her back into the courtroom to sign her judgment. It said she had agreed to a total claim of $3,021, plus $115 in court costs and 9 percent annual interest. She would send the hospital $60 each month until the balance was paid in full, and if she failed to make a payment the hospital could pursue garnishment of her wages.

“I’m glad you worked something out,” the judge said as he signed off on the agreement.

The court clerk handed Dudley a copy of the judgment, and once she was back outside the courtroom she took out her phone to run the math. If everything went right, and she somehow managed to save and pay $60 each month, she’d be sending checks to Poplar Bluff Regional for the next 5½ years.

In order to make 66 monthly payments, she had to somehow come up with the first, but her bank account was almost empty and payday was still a week away. Dudley left the courthouse, got into the car with her mother, then changed into a polo shirt for work. They drove away from the cobblestone streets of downtown and headed toward Goodwill.

“Could’ve been worse,” said her mother, Norma Garcia, 48. “Sixty isn’t so terrible.”

“It is if you don’t have it,” Dudley said. “Who do you know that’s sitting on an extra sixty each month?”

They drove past a dollar store, a payday lender and a fast-food restaurant advertising “full-time career opportunities” starting at $7.80 an hour.

“Maybe you can borrow it?” Garcia suggested.

“I don’t do credit cards or lenders,” Dudley said. “That’d just be another debt I couldn’t pay.”

“I meant from somebody.”

“Who?” Dudley asked. “Everyone we know is paying the hospital already.”

Their family had lived for three generations in Poplar Bluff’s predominantly black neighborhood just north of downtown, where according to credit records more than half of adults had debt in collections for unpaid auto loans, credit cards or medical bills. Dudley’s aunt had been sued twice by Poplar Bluff Regional and was forfeiting 15 percent of her paycheck to a court-ordered hospital garnishment. Her cousin was being sued for $1,200. Her sister owed $280.

But none of them had cycled through the emergency room as often as Dudley during the past several years. Her two pregnancies had complicated her diabetes, and she’d tried to save money by skimping on insulin. Instead of paying $50 every few months for a preventive medication, she had collapsed at work and been rushed to the emergency room, where she was sent home with thousands of dollars in now-unpaid bills. Poplar Bluff Regional was an ambitious rural hospital — a $173 million facility with a cancer center, a cardiac center, dozens of specialists and state-of-the-art surgical suites — and Dudley believed she was alive because of it. But during the past five years, the average amount that rural patients owed for hospital visits nationwide had doubled, and Dudley was earning $11 an hour at Goodwill as new hospital bills kept arriving in her mailbox.

She owed a $100 co-pay from another hospital visit in November 2018 that had already been sent to collections.

She owed $485 from another trip to the ER in April.

She owed $159 for lab tests, $85 for a doctor’s visit and now $60 for her first court-mandated payment, which was due at the end of the month.

“I’m trying to make peace with the fact that this debt could sit on me forever,” she said.

“Maybe I can help,” Garcia offered, even though she was on disability and avoiding her own billing notices from the hospital, seeking $365 in unpaid deductibles.

“It’s my bill to pay,” Dudley said. She’d been saving a little money for back-to-school supplies, and she said it was enough for her first month’s payment. “I’ll handle it,” she said. “There’s no other choice.”

There was one person in town who did believe patients had another choice, and over the past several years Daniel Moore had begun encouraging his clients to make it.

“Don’t pay one cent,” the lawyer had advised dozens of clients. “I don’t care how much the hospital says you owe. Fight them over it.”

Moore had been working for almost five decades as a self-described “old hillbilly lawyer” out of a converted house downtown. He specialized in criminal defense, with more than 400 cases pending all over the state, and he liked to align himself with the underdog. He’d been unable to afford a doctor himself while growing up on a farm with no running water, so when clients began coming to his office with bills from Poplar Bluff Regional that they could neither pay nor understand, he had agreed to take a look.

What Moore found in some of those itemized receipts didn’t make sense to him either: $75 for a surgical mask; $11.10 for each cleaning wipe; $23.62 for two standard ibuprofen pills; $592 for a strep throat culture; $838 for a pregnancy test. He searched through court records and discovered that the hospital was collecting hundreds of monthly garnishments from hourly employees at places like Quickstop, Earl’s Diner, Wendy’s, Instant Pawn and Alan’s Muffler.

He decided to represent several hospital patients free, and went to court against the hospital for a jury trial for the first time late in 2015. Moore’s client was a Poplar Bluff police officer with decent insurance, an Army veteran who went to the emergency room one afternoon because of chronic stomach problems. He’d been given a battery of tests in the ER, then treated with three IV medications before being discharged after three hours with a bill for $6,373. His insurance had paid some, but the hospital was suing him for co-pays totaling about $1,650, plus interest.

“The facts show that he came to the hospital and received treatment that alleviated his symptoms,” the hospital’s lawyer at the time told the jury. “He received three separate bills. He just didn’t pay the balance.”

“These charges are outrageous,” Moore told the jury. “He doesn’t owe the hospital anything.”

A billing manager from the hospital took the stand and said Poplar Bluff’s prices were in line with other hospitals in rural Missouri. She mentioned the high cost of providing care at rural hospitals, which must pay higher salaries in order to recruit doctors, nurses and specialists while also suffering more from federal cuts to Medicaid and Medicare compared with urban hospitals.

Moore began to question her about each charge on his client’s itemized receipt. Why, he asked, did it cost $800 to spend approximately 40 seconds with a doctor? Why was the hospital charging $211 for an oxygen sensor that was on sale for $16 at Walmart? Then Moore asked about three identical charges on the bill labeled “IV Push,” which each cost $365.

“An IV push, if I understand it, that’s the act of sticking the needle in that little port and then squeezing it,” Moore said. “Is that right?”

“Yes,” the billing manager said.

“So that takes maybe five seconds, right?”

“Yes.”

“So you, the hospital, think that act alone, not counting the drugs inside the IV, which cost thousands of dollars more — that act alone is worth $365.38?”

“Yes,” she said again.

“It makes me so mad,” Moore told the jury, in his closing argument. “If you’re content to let the hospital just crush people, then go on and give them their measly $1,650. But what you can do today is say, ‘Hey, we’re tired of this.’ How many times are we going to let working people take the shaft?”

“In reality, this is a simple bill,” the hospital’s lawyer countered. “All we’re asking for is his co-pay and his deductible. The hospital provided treatment. He still owes.”

The jury deliberated for less than an hour and then found in favor of Moore’s client, wiping away his hospital debts. But whatever sense of victory Moore felt was mitigated over the next months as Poplar Bluff Regional’s lawsuits continued to spread across the civil courts of Southeast Missouri, and he agreed to take on more free cases. “The hospital circuit,” Moore called it, which meant Mondays in Caruthersville, Tuesdays in West Plains and Wednesdays in Poplar Bluff.

On Thursdays it was Doniphan, a town of fewer than 2,000 people, where Poplar Bluff Regional had filed more than 300 lawsuits during the past several years. Moore drove past horse farms and timber plants, parking near an abandoned hospital. Ripley County Memorial had closed six months earlier, and there were locks on the doors and a sign taped above the ambulance bay.

“For Nearest Emergency Services, go 29 miles to Poplar Bluff Regional,” it said, and now several of those Poplar Bluff patients had been summoned right back to downtown Doniphan, to a red brick courthouse at the center of the town square.

They crowded next to each other on a wooden bench in the lobby, waving their hospital bills as fans against the late July heat while they waited for the courtroom to open and then entered one by one: a husband and wife who went for cancer treatments at Poplar Bluff Regional each week but couldn’t afford the co-pays. A community college student who owed more than $7,000 for treatment of a chronic heart condition. And then the judge, who had presided over hundreds of hospital cases during his career and also recused himself from one case a few years earlier, when the patient being sued was his wife.

“How are we all doing today?” he asked, as he looked down at a docket with 14 more cases between a hospital ownership company that couldn’t afford to keep losing money and patients who couldn’t afford to pay. Both sides were drowning in debt, fighting to stay above water, and pulling each other back down.

“It’s another full docket,” the judge said. “We might as well get started.”

Summary: Y/N’s life starts to change as her mother gets herself a new man after her father’s passing. A new school, a new life. Everything sounds too good to be true. Apparently, destiny has its own rules and that is something she will learn when destiny gives her some signs along her way.

CHAPTER 01

Y/N is a normal teenager who prefers to stay unnoticed. She could fit in easily, but her wish is to stay away from anyone. She had friends, but lost them by time. Those friends only stayed around to get something, when she was no use to them anymore, the friendships ended. She always thinks that there is only one reason why and she started to think that the reason must be that she is not pretty enough. There are just too many days on which she is reminded that she is not as beautiful as the other girls around her. It was not true, but she starts to believe the voice inside her head more each day. Every girl she compares herself to, every single female body seems to be prettier than she could ever be. That she never had a boyfriend in her life, is like a quite agreeing to her thoughts. It was not painful to be the ghost of the school, it was much more painful to her when she lost her father over a year ago. She remembers it clearly as it just had happened yesterday.

It was Friday night, her father told her to go out and to have fun. Even if she would just watch a movie, she should enjoy her youth as long as she has it. She lied to him, telling him that the there was no good movie to see in the cinema at the moment. She hugged him and kissed his cheek before she went to her bed room to be alone. She took her headphones from her pillow and turned the music on. Loud music was the silent scream she could not voice. Music was her escape, no matter how bad any kind of situation was, music saved her and took her into another world. She lied there sometimes for hours with closed eyes. As usually she had turned off the bed room light. But that was different that night. Without a warning her door was swung open and the light from the other room shined into hers. Her mother was standing in the door. At first, she thought she might have forgotten a house chore she was supposed to do, but then she saw the tears. She took her headphones down to hear what her mother had to say. But she was not speaking, she was screaming. She yelled at her, she yelled that she was screaming for her for the last five minutes. Next thing that happened was her mother running to the living room. Y/N did not know what to do, her father sitting there with his hand on his chest, painfully speaking to someone on the phone. One sentence she will never forget that her mother said to her, ‘How can you ignore your father’s screams?’. Her mother meant that even a neighbor was standing in front of the door and that the neighbor meant that he knocked at the door. She felt bad for ignoring her father’s screaming and apologized a dozen times. When her father hung up the phone, he said to his wife that they should get to the hospital right away. He did not say what it was, he only said they should drive off right away. Y/N remembers taking her father’s hand and starting to cry that she does feel sorry for not hearing. Her father only told her to stay calm, nothing happened. Everything will turn out alright. She should not forget to lock the door when they left. He kissed her forehead one last time and left. Her mother not even spending a second to look at her. She was too worried what might be wrong with her husband. Y/N did not know at that time that this was the last time she would see her father alive. That this was the last time she touched his hand, the last time she would hear his voice. Her mother returned the next morning with a friend who worked in the hospital as a nurse. She could not answer the questions Y/N had, every single time she said ‘dad’, it broke her mother’s heart even more. Her mother’s friend explained to her after she took care of her mother, that he won’t return. On the way to the hospital, her father had a heart attack. She had called for medical help as soon as she stepped into the building. A doctor was taking him immediately away from her to treat him, but he had a second heart attack not even long after his medical treatment. This time he did not make it. That was the day her world broke apart. Nothing was as painful as losing him. It took a few months for her mother to get back on her feet. In Y/N’ eyes, her mother was moving on to quickly, but her mother assured her, that she’s doing better.

A few weeks ago, her mother asked her if it was okay for Y/N if she would date someone again. She only wanted her mother to be happy again, that is why she helped her as often as she could. Of course, she would have nothing against it, since it makes her happy. She taught herself to cook and to bake, so her mother would have less work to do. She also took more and more house chores when her mother told her she needs to take a second job, since she does not earn enough money to pay the bills. Y/N’s birthday was a normal day, no birthday cake and no gifts, not even a happy birthday. Her mother was not at home all evening, she started her third job and was more exhausted than ever. She did not even try to cook herself something to eat, she only went to bed and used her headphones. The new guy on her mother’s side, is a work mate of hers. He was nothing like her father. It was not possible to compare them. She had a weird feeling around him, something about him seems fake. He was nice and tried his best to make her accept him as the new man on her mother’s side, but something told her that he something bad on him. When he changed his job, he moved into another city. They were still meeting at least every weekend, sometimes her mother even stayed during the week at his place or he stayed at her place.

Now, Y/N was waiting in front of her school to be picked by her mom and her boyfriend. She walked up and down the parking lot but they did not appear. After thirty minutes she decides to walk home since she has missed the bus already. She was walking for at least fifteen minutes before a car pulled over next to her. “Y/N. There you are! I told you to wait at the parking lot.”, her mother says. “Get in. We have a reservation.” Y/N only nods and gets into the car. It was his car and it was an expensive one. She took her book out and started to read. He only says that she is really such a good girl and that her mother raised her well. She does not react to his words and starts to study. “Sweetheart, we are here.” Y/N picks out of the window to see that they have arrived at an expensive sushi restaurant.

“Are my clothes fine enough?” Y/N says as she looks up and down her school uniform. “I think I am not dressed good enough for a place like this.”

“No, you look alright. It belongs to a friend of mine. He won’t mind that one guest does not dress up super chic.” He answers as he puts his arm around her mother, Y/N followed them right behind. They seat was placed near the windows. The restaurant was very pretty, but it looked more expensive from the outside than from the inside. When she looks outside, she can see a group of boys. It seemed like they would be waiting for someone, one of them stares at his phone most of the time. When she looks at their school uniform, she can see that they are from another school. One of them has such a beautiful face, it makes her feel weird. Her stomach seems to jump, just by looking at him. When she noticed that the other boys noticed her starring, they pushed that one boy she was staring at to turn to her. Immediately her face starts to blush and she takes one of the menu cards to hide her face with. “Are you alright?”

“Uhm, yeah. I just would like to know what to order before a waiter appears.” Her mother starts to laugh.

“Honey, we already ordered for you.” She takes the menu card from her. “My little dreamer. I thought you are not interested in boys yet?”

“Which boys?”

“Those boys.” She points her finger in the direction of the door. Y/N turns to see what her mother was talking about. Now, she wanted a black hole to appear underneath her to take her down. The boys from before were smiling at her before they took a table near her. The boys were sitting on a table from which perspective they could watch her, but she could not see them. “Does my daughter become a woman now?”, her mother says with a wink. Y/N shakes her head.

“No, I am not. I don’t have the time.”

“Good girl. You are really smart. I knew you know that boys are disgusting, childish and just a heavy stone on your feet when they are teenagers.”, he jokes. Thankfully for her, the sushi was brought to their table and this conversation ended. They started to eat as the waitress brings a glass of coke. “We did not order coke.”

“I am sorry. But one of the boys said he pays for it, it is for the young lady on your table.” Now, there was no way to hide how red her face has become.

“Can you tell them, thanks? I do not really know how to handle... You know?”, the waiter starts to grin and says that he will do so. Her mother mocked her with face expressions before they continued to eat their food.

“Sweetheart, there was a reason why we decided to talk with you in the restaurant and not at home. There is an important reason.”

“I guess it has something to do with the ring on your finger?”

“Yeah.” Her mother laughs as she shows her the ring.

“Beautiful.”, she gets up to hug her mom.

“I am so happy for you.” Her mother and her fiancé start to exchange looks. She goes back to her seat when she turns her eyes back to her mother. “What’s wrong?”

“We will move together.” She waited for Y/N’s reaction. As there was no reaction she continues. “Which means you will change the school after summer.”

“So, my next year in another school, huh? What about the wedding, next year?”

“You are right about the school. The school ends next week but you still have the summer to say goodbye to everyone before we leave.”, her mother explains. “But you are wrong about the wedding. We will marry during this summer. We don’t want to wait, you know?”

“I guess I understand.” She takes a sip from her coke. “I am just a little nervous if I have to change the school.”

“Don’t worry about that. We picked a good school for you together. Those boys are already wearing the school uniform of your new school. So, you already know some people, at least from seeing. Did you see the tall one with the bright shoulders?” Y/N nods. “I already informed myself a bit about the students at that school, he has been the elected representative of the student of their school for the last three years." ‘Great, now they know as the strange starring girl from the restaurant. It will be a disaster if they remember me.’, she thought.

“Did you guys find a place already?”

“Yes, and you will love it. Your room will be bigger and it is in general a bigger apartment.”, her mother tries to cheer her up. “Do you want us to get you some ice cream? I am sorry if you feel overwhelmed, but I decided it was time for our next step.” Y/N smiles and tries to assure that it was okay for her. She had nothing that would hold her here and maybe it would be good to have a change.

Summer went by so quickly, it did not feel like she would miss her old place as she takes the last pieces to put them into one of the boxes. She would for sure not miss anyone from school and she would also not miss anything within this town. “You’ve got everything?”, her mother asks. She only smiles and puts the last box in the back of the car. For the last time she looks up to her previous home and takes a deep breath. “Oh sweetheart. You can visit this town whenever you like, you know?” Her mother still believed her when she said she had friends, but she never noticed that she was barely outside. She smiles at her mother and gets into the passenger seat. She pulls the window down to feel the wind in her face. It feels like a new start, not just the family life but for her personally too. They arrived on Sunday evening which was the night before her new school year would have started. She does not even take a look at her new bed room, she goes directly to the bathroom to take a shower. She places her school uniform on her desk with barely open eyes. All she wanted and needed was some good sleep. When she switched the light off, she remembered that she did not clean everything from the floor, some boxes must still be around her. Just in case to not kick against those boxes she turns the light on one more time. She tries to scan the room before she turns it off again. Slowly she makes it to her bed, she snuggles into her blanket before she finally falls asleep.

The sun started to greet her through the window in the morning as her alarm goes on. Sleeping is one of the nicest things for her to do. She took her clothes from her desk and goes directly to the bathroom to get ready. She styled her hair at least three times before she decides to go with a straight hair look. She was not a huge fan of makeup, but her mother bought for Y/N her first makeup and it would make her happy to see her use it. She takes the mascara out of her new makeup bag and puts it on her lashes. As she left the bathroom ready for school, a nice smell of fresh cooked breakfast started to come from the kitchen. She rushes into her bedroom to get her bag and fills it with the most important things quickly and runs to the kitchen.

“Slowly. Honey, take it slow! There is enough food. I will pack you something for school, okay?”, Y/N hugs her mother tight. “You are really looking forward to school, huh?”

“I am just happy. You look so happy too. When did we have a warm breakfast like that the last time?”

“I only made some eggs and toast. Don’t pretend like it was something you never had.”

“I don’t, but when dad died, we barely had enough food.” Y/N explains while she looks around to find some muffins in the oven. “We only ate cold food or something that we could eat at least for two days from.”

“Don’t worry. We will not end up like that again. I promise you that.” Y/N takes a plate to place a toast and an egg on top of it. The smell of the muffins in the oven, it smells so delicious. “I already got a call this morning.”

“A call?”, Y/N repeats with a mouth full of food.

“I have a new job. I will start next week.” Y/N swallows her food down in one go.

“I thought he said he does not want you to overwork yourself again? Is it part time?”

“Yes. We can talk about this later because I only work when you are in school.” Y/N starts to clap her hands in joy. As she finished her breakfast, her mother took the dirty plate from her. “Go, don’t be late on your first day.” She hugs her mother one more time before she grabs her bag and makes her way to school. The school was only thirty minutes of walking and as she was already to early anyway, so decides to take the walk to free her mind a little. The neighborhood looks expensive but beautiful. She arrives way too early, twenty minutes before her school would even start. To her surprise the school door was not closed so she walks in. She looks around inside the building, she tries to memorize where which class is on which floor is. Her face was definitely giving away that she is the new one in school, but she did not care. This school looks much better than the old one.

“Don’t use this kind of face around here. I will show you everything you need to know.”, a voice behind her says. She turns around to see the boy from the restaurant in front of her. “Hey, I am Kim Seokjin. Just call me Jin.” She only looks at him without saying a word. “So, what have you seen or not seen yet?”

“I know who you are.” He looks surprised at her. “Sorry. That came off wrong. I mean your name was on the school website. I have just arrived actually.” A smile grows in his face.

“Well, I can show you around.”

“Sounds great.”

“Do you know someone around here?”

“No. I have never been in this town before. I don’t know anyone.”

“Well, if you want to, I can pick you up from your class room and introduce you to my friends. If it is okay for you, I mean they are only boys. We do not have girls as our friends yet, you could be our first.”, he winks.

“Uh, that’s why you are asking?” Jin nods. “That is not a problem at all. I prefer male friends over female ones anytime.” He looked a bit stunned at her. “That means less drama and more time to study. By the way my name is Y/L/N Y/N.”

“Nice name for a nice lady. Okay let’s check your schedule for today.” Jin shows her as much as he could in the short time they had left. As there were in front of her class room for the first class, a familiar face seems to appear. “Oh, are you also having history class in this room?” He points to the door.

“Yeah, I do.” He looks at her and starts to smile. “Oh, the sushi girl is in my class?”

“Did you just call me sush-”, Jin interrupts her.

“You do not have any respect for others, don’t you?” Jin’s argument was not wrong, but then she remembered where she has seen the other one before. Those two where at the sushi restaurant when she saw the one boy.

“Of course, I know politeness. Hello dear, I am Jungkook and this is Yugyeom.”

“Please be kind to Y/N. She will be eating lunch with us later.” Jin says goodbye to them and walks off. Jungkook opens the door for her and rushes in right after her.

“No need to rush, Kook. The school is not over that soon.”, Yugyeom says as he shakes his head.

“We need to find a place with her in the middle.” They find a place with three empty chairs but apparently one place was already taken and Y/N gets up immediately. “Where are you going?”

“This place is already taken, you two can sit together. I will find a place to sit.” Two rows behind them are two sits left to take. Each table had four chairs next to each other. Between those and the other four sits was a possibility to walk between the tables. Yugyeom immediately turns to their class mates in the row behind them to exchange the seats to sit closer to her. After a few minutes they agreed to exchange. “I will not get rid of you two, huh?”, she says with a grin in her face.

“Nope. You won’t.”, Jungkook assures. Yugyeom hits Jungkook on his shoulder. “Ouch?”

“Where’s Bhuwakul? Have you seen him?” Jungkook shakes his head. “I hope he is only late. I really thought we would stay in the same class together again.” The school bell starts to ring and a teacher starts to come in. The teacher looked like one of those teachers who were strict but also those who made their bad jokes every now and then. Everything has become quiet immediately until the door got opened with a sudden move.

“I am so sorry. I was...” The boy looks as he just finished a marathon. “I...”

“Nice to see some students do not change over the summer. Mr. Kunpimook, take a sit and be quiet.”

“Thank you, sir.” He starts to look around until he sees Jungkook and Yugyeom hiding their smiles behind their hands. “Really childish to laugh about that.”, he whispers. When he sits down, he does not spare a look at her. “Guys! Stop laughing it is not funny.”

Hi, um, I love this idea. Power dynamics can get real problematic real fast so I’m going to do my best to play with that dynamic without it nearing abuse at all because that’s bad. Hope you enjoy.

Patrick straightened his tie and gritted his teeth as he stepped into Pete’s office. He’d been at the company for just over two years and only met the CEO, Peter Wentz, a few times. It was his last day before he left the company to do more independent music as opposed to production and he had been excited until he got a voicemail that morning scheduling him for a private meeting before he clocked out for the last time. He exhaled through his nose before he raised his eyes, reminding himself that he jsut had to get through this meeting and then he was done.

Peter wasn’t the traditional boss, his hair was long and usually pushed back with enough gel to give him a bit of a fifties greaser look. Patrick might have thought he was handsome if he hadn’t been so scared of why on earth he was having this meeting in the first place. Peter had his legs crossed with one ankle over his other knee and was leaned back casually as if this was an everyday thing for him, which, it probably was. “Sit down, Patrick, you’re not in trouble,” he said with a hint of a smirk on his lips.

Patrick took and seat and smoothed out his jacket and then pants. He could feel his heart in his throat and hoped he didn’t look as nervous as he felt.

“I have to admit, I was sad to see your resignation. You’re a good musician. There’s nothing I can offer you to convince you to stay?”

Patrick took a breath before he shook his head “thank you but - I got a music degree to create my own music, not to manage someone else’s.” He realized his fists were clenched and consciously made himself relax “I appreciate the offer, though.”

Pete nodded and clicked his pen absently. Patrick’s eyes flicked to his hand for a moment, no ring. “I understand. Well, I wish you the best. You were one of our most promising employees so I’m sure you’ll be very successful. Should you ever need anything…” he scribbled something on the back of a business card before standing and offering the card and his hand to Patrick “don’t hesitate to reach out.”

Patrick stood and took the card, then shook Peter’s hand “thank you, Mr. Wentz. It’s been a pleasure to work under you.”

A flicker of amusement passed over Pete’s face before he nodded “Pete. It’s been a pleasure to have you.”

The next few weeks were far more stressful that Patrick had imagined. He didn’t have professors or teaching assistants who could help him get gigs anymore, he was on his own for the first time as a musician. He got a few spots playing at bars and even one at an art festival but it was constant work and it didn’t pay nearly as well or as steadily as his previous job.

On the bus ride home from a meeting with the manager of an upper-class Chicago bar, he felt something in the pocket of his suit jacket. He absently rubbed the face of the card without even looking at it, while at his previous job he’d collected his fair share of business cards that he had no use for so finding one in his suit wasn’t strange. He closed his eyes and sighed, he needed this gig - rundown bars only got someone so far, getting a spot at an upper-class place for actually get him some name recognition or tip money, especially if he could manage a recurring gig. He eventually pulled the business card out to give himself something else to think about for a moment.

The front read “Peter Wentz. DCD2 Records, CEO.” and then Pete’s office number. He flipped it over and saw a second phone number written, the one from the meeting on his last day. He figured it would be another office number that would go through a secretary and probably never get to Pete but he took his phone out anyway and dialed the number. It was late enough that the bus was quiet and Patrick could hear every tinny, electronic ring as he waited for for a voicemail, seeing as it was far past office hours.

“Hello?”

Patrick hesitated a second, he hadn’t expected an answer “is this Peter Wentz?”

“One and only, who’s this?”

“Patrick Stump, you said to call if I needed anything.”

Patrick could hear Pete’s tone change through the phone “damn, I was starting to think you’d never call. How’s life?”

Patrick chewed his bottom lip, he wasn’t used to hearing Pete so casual “could be worse. I like getting to make my own stuff.”

“Mhm,” Pete mumbled, he sounded tired and Patrick hoped he hadn’t woken him up “so what made you call?”

Patrick’s leg was bouncing but at least his voice sounded steady “any chance you’ve got any connections at a bar called Harbor Lights? Sorry, I’m sure that’s really unprofessional. Just - fuck, I need this gig.”

Pete hummed “easy. Yeah, I know some people. Tell you what - you meet me for coffee tomorrow and we’ll talk. Get some rest, okay?”

Patrick grinned and nodded even though Pete couldn’t see it “yeah, okay. Thanks - thank you so much.”

“Don’t mention it. I’ll text you details in the morning.” Pete hung up before Patrick could say goodbye. He slipped his phone and the business card back into his pocket as the bus got close to his stop, still smiling slightly.

The coffee bar was way above Patrick’s price range but he reasoned that he’d have to spend money to make money. He wasn’t going to argue with the man who might get him his first good gig about coffee locations. He spotted Pete after a moment and took a seat next to him at the bar. Pete turned and smiled before shaking Patrick’s hand. “Good to see you again, man.”

Pete looked good in a suit, Patrick remembered that from their interactions at the office, but Patrick decided that he looked even better casual. He had on skinny jeans and a white button up that had the top couple buttons open under a suede jacket. “You too. H-how are you?” Patrick bit his tongue after his stuttered, his social anxiety would really be the end of him.

Pete smiled, though, and shook his head “better since you called me. I was worried I’d freaked you out.”

“No, I just…” don’t say forgot, he reminded himself “didn’t want to bother you.”

“You could never do that, sweetheart. Now, you’ve got an interview with Dan?”

Patrick nodded “had one yesterday. I just know - I mean, that place must get so many applicants for a position like that and -”

Pete cut him off “don’t worry about it, I get it. I’ll put in a good word. You deserve it. Dan and I have worked together for years.”

“Thank you,” Patrick exhaled, still a little stressed, “it means a lot.”

Patrick got out his wallet as the barista walked over to take his order. Pete put a hand over Patrick’s before he could get his card out “don’t. I’ve got it.”

Patrick opened his mouth to argue but he really wasn’t in a position to turn down a free coffee “thank you, again. Can I ask why you’re being so nice to me?”

Pete let go of his hand and sipped his own coffee “because you’re a damn good songwriter who deserves to make it…” for a moment Patrick could have said Pete looked nervous “but also because you’re cute and you’re not my employee anymore.”

Patrick blinked at him for a moment and searched for words.

“Sorry,” Pete looked down “wishful thinking that you’d - anyway, I’ll make that call for you tonight. Feel free to pretend that didn’t happen.”

“No - I…” Patrick stuttered “I mean, really?”

Pete shrugged “I’d be stupid not to give it a shot. Hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable.”

“You didn’t. I’m sorry, I’m bad at this. If you’re asking me out I’m saying yes.” It wasn’t Patrick’s smoothest line but it was a hell of a lot better than his previous silent staring followed by stammering over incoherent sentences.

“Yeah? Alright, cool. Thanks.”

Patrick laughed, it was strange to see Pete caught off guard “sorry, you’re just a little… out of my league.”

Pete raised an eyebrow “seriously?”

“I mean… yeah.” Patrick looked down.

Pete reached over and tilted Patrick’s chin back up “you’re cute, I’m serious. I figured you’d already have a partner or that you wouldn’t be interested.”

Patrick shook his head “nope, totally single. I don’t really get out much with working a lot and making ends meet right now.”

Pete drew his lips together and hummed thoughtfully “listen, sweetheart… I’m not - just let me know if you need anything. Not just with work. I don’t want to find out you’re not able to pay bills or afford for or anything, okay?”

“Peter, you don’t have to do that.”

“It’s Pete, and I know. I just don’t want you struggling if I’ve got the means to help. I don’t mind taking you out once and a while while you’re still figuring things out.”

Patrick leaned over and hugged Pete, he wasn’t sure if that was the proper thing to do but he needed to say thank you somehow and he didn’t have much else to offer, Pete’s hands on his waist and back felt good, though. He hoped he wouldn’t mess this up.

The hours turned long and they’d hit the somewhat duller stages of planning. The initial excitement for the heist had given way to long hours of detailing, building the vault replica, and going over the execution. It required a level of focus and concentration that brought out frayed nerves in everyone.

Well, almost everyone.

Nemo had always been good at keeping his composure, and Poseidon had a knack for coming in and out of the character he was playing without wearing himself out. But the rest of them were starting to show signs of distress.

Ariel and Eric bantered constantly, but their rapport had taken on a sniping quality, even about the most petty items, right down to their Netflix queue. The uptick in Smee’s fidgeting with his cap, as well as his obsessive need to re-review the footage of the casinos and note every single detail, was leaving an ache in Killian’s jaw from all the clenching.

LJ, meanwhile, was giving Killian and Liam the silent treatment, as he kept his headphones glued to his ears and his nose buried in a seemingly endless stream of books.

Milah had taken to disappearing for hours at a time, keeping whatever - or whomever - she was doing under wraps. All of which suited Killian just fine, as the last thing they needed was to alert Gold that she was in town. Besides he knew Milah and trusted her. He knew she could be stealthy when she wanted, so he kept his mouth shut.

Ursula spent most of her time shadowing her co-workers at the casino, and only dropping by to feed them new information and get orders from Liam. The two of them would retreat into a corner, all bent heads and whispered words. They didn’t fool Killian at all. He knew Ursula was updating Liam on all of Belle’s movement and a part of him wanted to call his brother on wasting effort by splitting their focus. But Liam had promised, as did he, so he knew he owed his brother this chance.

As for Henry, Killian knew he still felt like an outsider. Luckily, the kid had thick skin and when he was done bonding with LJ over music and comics, he’d retreat to his own corner, plugging in his headphones and writing in his journal. His quiet edge was one Killian easily recognized as the product of spending too much time on his own in foster and group homes, and he couldn’t help but feel drawn to the kid because of it. When he was not shadowing LJ, Killian had been working with Henry, going over what he needed to do and rehearsing and timing his performance. The lad was good - more than good - and Killian couldn’t help the pride he felt as time and again Henry delivered on what he was asked to do.

Which was why when he found out that Henry wasn’t an expert on poker - or any card game - Killian took the kid under his wing and vowed to teach him everything he knew. Unlike his celebrity students, Henry was sharp as a knife, picking up on what the game was about and executing bluffs with such mastery that it brought tears to Killian’s eyes. He was getting fairly good at blackjack too. He couldn’t count cards with Liam’s speed, but he was good at making quick decisions in the heat of the game and landing on his feet.

After the first couple of nights, LJ asked to join the game, and Killian got a glimpse at another side of his little brother. When he was at ease - and he seemed most at ease with Smee and Henry - he could be quite charming. His permanent scowl gave way to an easy smile and a dry wit, his hands moving fast as he dealt cards, his eyes not giving away a single thing as he called bets. He proved to be as good as Killian at bluffing, and even better than Liam at reading a table. It was enough to make Killian weep, again, which resulted in LJ throwing his cards at him, calling him a softie.

Clearing his throat, Killian looked at the three of them. “We need a night out.”

“To do what?” Henry asked

“Get some drinks, play some cards, bet some money,” he replied with a wave of his hand.

“So basically the same thing we’re doing right here,” LJ retorted, clearly not impressed with him. Killian, though, knew by now it was a tactic his brother played. If you don’t get your hopes too high, the fall doesn’t hurt that much.

“Not exactly the same… we’re lacking a certain ambiance here.”

Henry gave them a wry grin. “I’m underage… I won’t be allowed anywhere.”

“There is so much you need to learn about this town, lads.” Killian turned around to his most loyal companion. “What do you say, Smee? Should we show these two what the City of Sin has to offer?”

Which was slightly funny considering that they ended up in one of the seediest joints Vegas had to offer. But the drinks were good, the tables were humming with activity, and no one even thought to card them with Killian by their side. They joined a poker game in one of the private rooms for a few hours before they took onto the blackjack tables. Henry held his own in both while also holding down his liquor. LJ, true to form, simply took everything by storm, including charming the brunette dealer who kept leaning closer to him with each new hand she dealt. When she announced the end of her shift and threw a coy glance at LJ, Killian knew the night was coming to an end. At least for some of them.

Smee and Henry moved to cash in their winnings, while he and LJ finished their drinks.

“You know you’ve had a tail for the past few hours, don’t you?” LJ said as he placed his glass on the table.

“Aye, I’m aware.” Killian’s fingers moved along the rim of the glass, resisting the urge to look behind him. “She’s been shadowing us all night.”

“You shadow her, she shadows you… is this some kind of kinky foreplay I want to know nothing about?”

Killian laughed. “I wish.” He ran a hand through his hair, forcing himself to focus on the matter at hand. “Will this be a problem for you?”

LJ shrugged. “Nah, I don’t think so. She might be good with faces, but I’m good at being a no one. It’s going to come in handy this time. But I should take off before she makes it any closer. Perhaps seek refuge in a different bed for the time being.” His eyes glinted with mischief.

He rolled his eyes. “I’m sure that’s a sacrifice you’re willing to bear, and I’m sure that lovely croupier would be more than happy to assist you.”

“I’ll get Henry and Smee to leave without coming back here, just in case. I figure you can run interference for us?”

Killian raised his glass at him. “I can do that. It’s me she’s after anyway.”

LJ squeezed his arm. “Killian, be careful, aye?” The concern and fondness in his words made Killian swallow.

He watched as LJ retreated, playing with the chips on the table and downing his drink. He ordered another as the new dealer showed up. As she set up the table, Killian counted out his heartbeats - one, two, three, four…

The way she cocked an eyebrow at him stirred something in him, but he reigned it in and slowly removed his hand. Emma stared down at her cards for a long moment before passing on raising her bet. He wouldn’t count that as a sign of anything, that way would only lead to heartache in the end. They continued to play in silence for a few hands, Killian earning a nice pile of chips while Emma fell behind. Resisting the urge to give her more pointers, Killian leaned back and drummed his fingers on the table.

“Drop the act. I know you’re up to something and I know you’re trying to weasel information out of me. But I’m not the girl that I was. I’m not falling for your charming lies this time.” She gathered her chips, leaving one behind for a tip, and walked away.

He shouldn’t go after her, he knew he shouldn’t. And yet the temptation was stronger than his will. Picking up his own chips and sliding them in his pocket, he flipped one to the dealer and followed Emma out.

He caught up with her almost at the exit and pulled her into a corner of the room. Resisting the urge to give in and press his body to hers, he focused instead on his words.

“You don't want to do this. You don’t want to be spying for Gold, Emma.”

“You don’t get to tell me what to do, especially since you’re the reason I need to find this type of employment.” While there was bitterness in her words, her eyes also seemed focused to his lips. Killian felt the same pull and he moved closer to her, his fingers itching to trace along the soft skin of her arms. Before he could, Emma shook her head and pressed her hand on his chest, stopping him.

“Your charm no longer works on me, Jones. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…”

“I’m not trying to fool you.” He sighed, resisting the urge to drag her out of here and bring her to the warehouse, to tell her everything. If this was his con alone, he’d do it in a heartbeat. But too much was a stake here, too many of his friends were depending on him. They were already on shaky ground considering Liam’s focus on Belle, Killian couldn't add more complications to the mix.

Still, he couldn’t leave without letting her know the type of man she was dealing with. “I know Gold. He’s dangerous. He doesn’t play fair.”

She snorted, tilting her head to the side as she glared at him. “And you do?”

The barb hurt and he swallowed around the lump in his throat. “I have a code, believe it or not.”

“I don’t need a code. I need answers,” she whispered and her confession shook them both. Emma’s eyes widened and she tried to move away from him, but Killian grabbed her elbow and pulled her to him.

“What is it that you're after?” His eyes bored into her, studying her face for any hint of what was really going on. “It can be just the job, not really. Gold pays well, but nothing that you cannot make elsewhere.”

“I don't have that many options left with my reputation ruined, remember?”

“Bullshit. You’ve been highly rewarded for your work.” He regretted the words as soon as he said them. He should learn to keep his own damn mouth shut.

“Keeping tabs on me, huh?”

He ignored her question, his mind focused on one thing and one thing only. It was clear that when he walked out of that room on her, there had been more than her job at stake.

“What was it? What did I cost you, Emma?”

Her face was a blank mask, her eyes avoiding his. “Wouldn't you like to know”

He reached out, caressing his thumb along her cheek. He kept his next words quiet, the desperate plea in them clear. “Please, love, tell me… I need to know.”

She gave him one last assessing look before she pulled away. “Goodbye, Killian.”

He took a breath and let her walk away. When she was finally out of his line of sight, he closed his eyes and rested his forehead against the wall, his heart beating frantically in his chest.

Whatever it was that Emma Swan was looking, whatever it was that made striking a deal with Gold worth it, he was going to find out.

And he was going to do everything he could to deliver it to her.

After another night spent with rum and restless dreams, Killian stood at the entrance of the warehouse, willing the pounding in his head to pass. He closed his eyes and sank against the exterior wall as he pressed a bottle of cold water against his temple.

The sound of car tires on gravel had him open one eye and face the glaring morning sunlight again. He turned just as a taxi pulled around the curve and LJ got out. His leather jacket was draped over one arm and he carried a cardboard tray with a few paper cups on his free hand. His hair damp and disheveled, shirt wrinkled, and that spring in his step could only mean one thing.

“You look like you had a good time,” Killian said as LJ handed him one of the cups. The welcome scent of steaming coffee filled his senses and Killian discarded the water bottle, taking a long, slow sip of the warm beverage. It tasted burnt and bitter, making him regret all his life choices - especially this one - while he pondered how his brother could even drink this.

LJ left the rest of the tray on a nearby bench and took a sip of his coffee, his wicked smile and glinting eyes a silent answer to Killian’s comment. “You still look to be in one piece…” He twitched one side of his mouth, making a show of checking for wounds. “I thought I was going to get a call in the middle of the night and have to go pick you up at the police station.”

“I would have never dared to interrupt your much needed getting laid-time, little brother. I would have called Smee.” Killian lifted one shoulder as he ventured one more sip of the coffee. Yup, still terrible. “Besides, she doesn’t have anything on me.”

“She has you by the balls, but please, by all means, keep deluding yourself.”

Killian chuckled, tossing the poor excuse for a coffee in the trash bin. “Next time, unless it’s done by a proper barista with freshly ground coffee beans and a espresso machine, bring me tea, LJ.”

“Like you wouldn’t find a fault in any poorly steeped tea too, brother.”

Touché. Killian placed two fingers over his heart, a part of him grateful that LJ had gotten to know that side of him.

“Come on,” LJ called as he picked up the tray and tilted his head towards the front door. “Henry's cocoa is getting cold and the poor lad needs his sugar to function properly.”

He smirked as he passed LJ and opened the door and held it for him. “You two seem to be getting along well.”

LJ shrugged. “He's cool and honestly, I feel a lot more comfortable around him than some of the others. He hasn't been in the business much…”

The meaning behind the words was clear. “So anything related to the Jones name doesn't mean much to him.”

LJ gave him a shy smile. “Yeah, that's a perk.”

Killian placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “It's good to make friends, good friends, early in your career. People you can trust.” He looked at him and a wave of sympathy flooded him. He wanted to be that for his brother so desperately, as Liam had been for him. And yet, he understood more than anyone the need to shine for yourself, outside your family name. “You don't have to do everything alone.”

“I know… is that Smee for you?”

“Aye.”

Henry made his way towards them, his eyes almost rolling at the back of his head. “Finally, man.” He reached for the cup that LJ handed to him and took a long sip. His eyes closed, he sighed in contentment. “You even remember the cinnamon”.

Killian cocked an eyebrow, some memory poking at the back of his mind that he couldn’t place. “Cinnamon?”

LJ lifted a shoulder carelessly as he finished his coffee and tossed the cup in a nearby trash bin. “Yeah, the kid has weird taste.”

Henry gave him a challenging look. “Who are you calling weird, you nimble fingered freak?”

LJ gave him a cheesy smile, crossing his arms over his chest and glaring at Henry. “Careful with the whipped cream there, Henry. We don't want you to put on weight and miss your acrobatic stunt mark over there. A lot is a stake here, maybe I should switch you to skim milk.”

Henry tossed his finished drink, puffing out his chest in his best in his best impression of a face-off. “Please, that'll never happen.” He opened his arms with an arrogant smile. “I'm too good for this.”

LJ grabbed his wallet from his back pocket and took out a bill. “Prove it, fly boy. I have a twenty that says you can’t make that jump.”

“You’re on.”

It took less than thirty minutes to set up the recreation of what would happen in the vault in a few days. Henry gave LJ a self-satisfied smile as he climbed into the cash cart.

Everyone gathered around and Killian figured it was as good a time as any to do a run-down of the operation. The rest of them might as well benefit from the bet Henry and LJ had going on.

“Alright, here’s the rundown. On the night of the fight, Poseidon’s package will arrive at the casino at 7:15. From there, LJ needs to work his magic, get the codes we need to access the elevator. At 7:30, Ariel and Eric will work their own magic and get the cart delivered, with Henry inside, into the vault. At that point we’re all in.” He paused and glanced around the room. “All-in. We can’t back up, we can’t screw up, we can’t delay. Once the vault is closed, we have thirty minutes before he suffocates.”

“Gee, you better not fuck it up, guys, or I swear I’ll haunt you from the underworld.” Henry waved as they closed the lid and Ariel and Eric rolled the cart into the vault replica.

From the corner of his eye, Killian watched as Liam entered the warehouse, his hair in the same state of dishevel as LJ’s had been, the same spring in his step. Bloody arse. Liam stood next to him and watched intently as the action unfolded.

“When the power goes down, it means that all entries to the vault and the elevator are on lock down for two minutes. And that is when we strike.”

The lights in the vault dimmed and Henry pushed the false top of the cart open, slowly removing himself from his confines. “It is going to feel like I spent days in there,” he said as he positioned himself on top of the cart.

“Alright, flyboy,” LJ teased, “we’ve left you in the middle of the room, far away from everything. There are sensors on the floor, and you need to get from where you are to the door without activating any of them. What are you going to do, hotshot? I have twenty saying you can’t make it.”

“I have ten saying you can!” Smee called.

“You can do it, Henry! I have faith in you!” Ariel cheered, clapping her hands in excitement.

Liam’s mouth twisted into a grimace, making him look nauseated. “We should all maintain some professionalism in here, this is a serious operation.”

“They are young, Liam.” Killian shrugged, pointing at Henry with a twenty to show his support. “Especially Henry and LJ. Let them live a little.” He turned to face his brother and gave him a once over from head to toe. “Speaking of living a little, did you have a nice night?”

The tips of Liam’s ears turned pink and he shuffled his feet. “It’s not what you think.”

Killian gritted his teeth. “Please Liam, don’t insult my intelligence.” He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “As long as you promise me that you can handle it.”

“I can handle it,” Liam said quickly and Killian really wanted to believe his brother, but he wasn’t sure anymore.

Their conversation in a stale point, they both turned their attention at the scene in front of them. Henry closed his eyes, took a deep breath and positioned himself in a dead squat. From there he leapt, gracefully and hands first, from the cart to a ledge in one of the walls of the vault. Sitting there, he turned around and flipped off LJ. “Drinks on you tonight, loverboy.”

The rest of the crew clapped and boomed, with Nemo congratulating them all on a job well done.

“This is all well and good, but I’m sorry to say that we are fucked.”

Everyone turned to find Milah standing there, hair a mess, her blouse misbuttoned, and mascara running down her cheeks. There was decidedly no spring in her step and her face made it clear that whomever she picked up for the night hadn’t gotten the job done.

As if to confirm Killian’s assumption, she cocked an eyebrow. “And not in a good way.” She walked towards the nearest table, her high-heeled boots clicking against the tile floor and poured herself a drink. Tossing her head back, she finished off the drink in one go and poured herself another.

“Wow, Milah, slow down, it’s not even 10 am,” Killian cautioned, moving slowly towards her. He had a few choice barbs on the tip of his tongue, but though they had parted amicably and they were friendly with one another, there were certain lines a gentleman didn’t cross with someone he’d known in the biblical sense. This was one of those lines. He’d never made a comment on Milah’s hookups and he wasn’t going to start now, unless it meant problems for their operation. Taking one last step in her direction, he took the glass from her hand. “What are you talking about?”

She started to pace, speaking a mile a minute. “These idiots. It’s a universal truth that you can count on electricity companies to be the most inefficient people ever, but no… we had to hit the jackpot of the only capable ones! Who would have thought that they would do a fucking routine inspection and took notice of the fact that you can blow up their grid lines one by one like dominoes?”

There was silence as she continued to move back and forth across the room, until Nemo shot Smee a questioning look. “Do you understand what she’s talking about?”

“Some, it seems that we will be having troubles with the planned power blow up.”

“Exactly right, my friend,” Milah agreed, jabbing her finger at Smee, the open, loose sleeve of her chiffon blouse billowing around her elbow in added emphasis. “They figured out their weakness and now they are fixing it. Like I said, we’re fucked.”

Liam scrunched his face in confusion. “Wait, how do you know all of this?”

She spun and raised an eyebrow at Liam, leaving Killian feeling oddly grateful to not have that level of fury directed at him. “Where exactly do you think I was last night? Or any of the other nights?”

Liam’s cheeks flushed. “I just thought...”

She groaned in frustration. “Oh, for crying out loud! Just because you’re all terrible horn dogs doesn’t mean I am. I’ve been trailing some of the electricity engineers and technical operators. And yes, last night I actually had to sleep with one of them so I could hack into their work orders. Which is how I know about this entire thing.”

Every last person in the room had the grace to look sheepish, but none of them dared to speak up. It was Nemo who finally ventured to break the silence. “Milah, we-”

Milah waved him off. “Yeah, you can all apologize to me later, after we figure out what the hell we’re going to do if we still want to pull this job.”

Eric turned to look at Liam. “What about-”

But Ariel interrupted him, patting his hand and shaking her head. “Not enough time.”

And that was the crux of it. There was not enough time to do a bloody thing. Coming this close to the job, being able to taste it and feel it brush against their fingertips, only to have it ripped away at the very last minute. Killian wanted to smash the entire fake vault, anything to break the sense that it was standing there mocking him.

“Unless it’s a pinch.”

All eyes turned back to Milah, who was now perched over the edge of the table, nursing a third drink.

“A what now?” Henry asked.

Milah took a sip of her drink. “It’s like a heart attack for any broadband electrical circuitry.”

Killian glanced around the room, wondering if that made any bloody sense to anyone else. Given their blank expressions, he was going with nope. Sighing deeply, Milah looked at Smee. “Can you take this one? I’m knackered and I don’t have it in me.”

Smee smiled and cleared his throat. “A pinch is an electromagnetic pulse that can shut down any power source in its vicinity. Bombs do it, but it usually goes unnoticed because of the amount of destruction that usually follows.”

“So this pinch,” Nemo asked, taking charge of the scene in a way he only knew, “could take out the power of Vegas?” Milah nodded. “For how long?”

“About thirty seconds.”

Nemo’s face twisted. “That’ll do.”

“There. Is. Only. One. Little. Tiny. Problem,” Milah punctuated each word by swaying her glass back and forth before swallowing the remainder in one gulp. “There is only one pinch in the world big enough to do this, and it sure as shit ain’t here in Vegas.”

Cold sweat ran down Killian’s neck. “Please tell me it’s in a place that is currently going through a cold wave with snow storms and high winds.”

Milah gave him an apologetic smile. “California.”

Oh for fuck’s sake. “I’m not going.”

“Killian-” Liam started but Killian was not having it.

Pulling Liam to the side, he met his brother’s eyes. “Nope. Take LJ and Henry with you. Those two are going to be better at this than me. I’m going to stay here. Smee and I have to work on the final details of the plan anyway.” He left it unsaid that he was going to have Smee look into Emma’s past and figure out what it was she was looking for. But his brother didn’t need to know that. Not now. They were already working on two fronts, he didn’t need for anyone to know he was adding a third. He could handle this. Besides, it would be good for LJ and Liam to bond a little.

“You sure about LJ? He seems green,” Liam asked, his eyes shifting to where their brother was talking with Nemo and Henry.

If you spent more time talking with him than seducing your ex-wife, maybe you wouldn’t think that. Killian shook his head as he let the thought pass. “Liam, I trust him, and you should too. We brought him here to be part of the family, didn’t we? Then let him take part in it.”

“You’re right.” Liam stepped away and moved to gather Milah, LJ, Henry, Ariel and Eric, readying them to plan their next moves and set them into motion.

With their attention focused elsewhere, Killian knew it was the perfect time to put his own plan into motion. “Smee,” he called over his friend, “I need you to look into something for me.” He pulled his phone and showed Smee a picture of Emma and Gold.

Smee’s face turned pale and before he could say anything, Killian cut him off. “Aye, it’s her and she’s here working for Gold. She’s looking for something and I need to know what that is.” He tried to hide the desperation in his voice but failed in the end, his voice cracking.

“I’ll look into it,” Smee vowed solemnly and Killian felt a lump form in his throat at his friend’s loyalty.

“Thank you, mate.”

Smee moved towards his data room, ready to work his magic and Killian turned around to assess the room. Liam and LJ were having a conversation and Killian left them, for once, to work their own relationship out. If nothing else came out of this, at least they could all be a family in the end. He spotted Henry at the side of the room, still assessing the vault and doing a slow-motion rehearsal of his moves.

“Henry! Listen, take care of yourself out there.” Killian placed his hand on Henry’s shoulder. “And take care of the others. You’ll be trapped between an obnoxious couple and a family feud, sorry about that. Just keep your head in the game. Someone other than Milah has to.”

Henry chuckled. “I will, Killian, you don’t need to worry about me. I’m not a kid.”

Killian’s heart grew two sizes in his chest. “Yes, you are. You can lie to those goody two shoes that had you at the circus, and you can even lie to yourself if you want, but you can’t lie to me, boy.” He gave the lad a reassuring smile. “The reasons for your secrets are your own and I’ll respect that, but you’re a part of us now, just as much as LJ is. We take care of our own.”

From the way Henry swallowed and how his eyes locked with Killian’s for a brief minute, his want to believe read clearly on his face. But as quickly as it came, his face shifted back to neutral, his hard armor sliding back into place. “I’m tougher than I look. I won’t break.” Yet again Killian cursed every single foster parent that had beaten the sense of love and family out of this kid. But, he reminded himself, one thing at the time.

“I know.” He patted Henry’s cheek. “Still, be careful, lad.”

He watched Henry leave and decided he’d had enough emotions for the day. It wasn’t even noon. He needed a drink. He was pouring himself a healthy dose of rum when he heard Milah’s voice call from behind him.

“Killian Jones, the overprotective brother. I thought that was Liam’s role.”

He took a sip of his drink, enjoying the slide of the liquid fire down his throat. “It seems I’ve taken a page from his book.”

He passed the drink to her and she took a sip. “Do I get the “you’re family to me” speech too?”

Killian’s eyes softened, his muscles sore from too many nights with little sleep. “You know you are. You wouldn’t be here with us if we didn’t feel like family to you too.” He reached for her hand. “Take care of them, Milah. Don’t let them do anything foolish.”

She gave him a small smile. “I’ll try. But with two Joneses in the mix, I can’t make any promises.”
