Week 2: Research, Research, Research
One of the most time-consuming part of any historical undertaking is: Research.
I actually began working on my internship with Osceola History back at the beginning of August, before the academic year started, so much of my ‘summer vacation’ was spent researching the first Unit of the distance learning curriculum I have been tasked with creating. Each of the sections of history I will be focusing on have been divided up into units or different topics of life in Osceola History, focusing for the most part on the 19th century.
For this first section of Osceola History, I have been focusing on the indigenous tribes within and around Central Florida. Predominantly interested in the Timucua and the formation of the Seminole nation, I have spent a lot of time combing through the written records at Osceola History, locating everything from general information on the native peoples who were living in Florida during the Pre-Columbian era to the ethnographic narrative of the Seminoles near Osceola County written in 1928 by Minnie Moore-Wilson.
In recent years there has been an ideological shift within the historical community to allow for a more culturally diverse view of history to take center stage. When developing the activities for the different units and creating a historical background, I have been focused on where these sources are coming from and what information I am presenting.
At Osceola History there is a wealth of information presented in The Welcome Center that provides a timeline of early Florida, the history of indigenous peoples and the changes that have taken place through the modern era. One of the most interesting sections of the museum, showcases some of the archaeological finds that have been discovered and recorded in Osceola county. One of my favorite artifacts on display is a canoe believed to be from the Pre-Columbian era. This canoe is remarkably preserved, and the sheer size of it is fascinating. Displayed next to stone and bone tools used by indigenous peoples, along with some adorable taxidermy friends, this canoe really showcases the wilderness of Florida as it was for thousands of years and how the first explorers of Florida settled and thrived.

This week I spent more time working and expanding on this foundation of a historical background as well as creating a list of resources and suggested reading for teachers. In this age of Coronavirus, I have spent the week working from home, with my trusty feline research companions by my side thoroughly accomplishing their self-appointed tasks as lap-warmers, proofreaders, page-turners, and professional desk organizers. Here is a picture of my cat Crowley next to the pile of binders I have been working through.

Earlier in the week, I had a meeting with the director of Experiences and Engagement over Zoom where I got some incredibly useful feedback on the historical background I had submitted and then on Friday, I made my way over to the museum to pick up some additional resources and ideas for activities for future units. As I continue to work through this first pass at curriculum, I find myself thinking back to what activities I would have enjoyed as a kid, hopefully these games and projects translate well within the classroom. I might have to ask some of my friends with children to test them out next week!
