Vegan Kin Food Ideas
S'up! So, we've been seeing a lot of kin food posts, but the focus is always on meat. Then when vegan or vegetarian options are listed it's like salad + fruit and that's it. We've been vegan for some years now so here's a list of things we eat that we think others might enjoy too!
A piece of advice we found helpful is to think about the food item you miss and break it down into what exactly you miss. If you miss eating gems, is it the appearance? The crunch? Gritty texture or dry taste? In that spirit of that, our list will be largely broken up by texture/experience.
Crunch Crunch Snacks
This includes snacks/sides that get your jaws working or have a satisfying "snap" to them.
Roasted chickpeas
Kale chips
Ants on a log (celery, peanut butter and raisins)
Hummus + baby bell peppers/sugar snap peas/carrots
Granola / cereals (a lot of types are vegan, read the ingredients before purchasing)
Banana chips
Nuts + seeds
Popcorn (avoid "buttery" packages, buy plain or kettle corn)
Peanut butter pretzels (crunchy outside, delicious soft inside)
Smartie candies
Keep your cookies/chocolate bars in the fridge or freezer
Also, load cookies up with extra nuts/seeds/choco chips
Soft, but with some crunch
This section is for dishes/sides that are overall easier on the teeth, but with elements that still crunch or snap. If you're looking for recipes that combine different texture elements check these out.
Lentil nachos + nacho cheese sauce
"Crunchwrap" (quesadilla made with refried beans and homemade cheese sauce that we open and place tortilla chips and lettuce inside after grilling)
Tempeh bacon (we like this on a BLT or grilled cheese sandwich)
Crispy tofu sandwiches
Grilled asparagus
Apple slices with nut butter
Pickles
Apple turnovers
Vegan sushi (there's a ton of recipes, check out these two collections to get started X, X)
Falafel (can be used a hundred different ways, sandwiches, wraps, on it's own, etc.)
Roasted chickpeas again, but with a caveat**: You can roast them at 350 F for 30 mins and they'll be cooked enough to pop between your teeth, but soft in the center. We like to either eat them as-is or top our salads with them. (We season with salt/pepper before going into the oven, nothing else) **Must be eaten after baking, they will not keep
For the foragers in the crowd
These dishes focus more on having either multiple different foods in a visible way or a tactile element to how you eat them.
Chia pudding
Smoothie bowls
Overnight oatmeal
Trail mix
Pumpkin bars (We replace the egg with a flax egg and use vegan butter)
Chocolate chip banana monkey bread
Corn on the cob
Grilled veggie kebabs
Cranberry cilantro quinoa salad
Chili
Bush's beans and rice
Salads topped with sliced fruit, nuts, grains and/or beans
Edamame (a favorite, we love pulling out the insides with our teeth, you can get ones without the pods if they bother you)
Plant-based burgers, the kinds with the chunks of veggies (our favorite is dr. praeger's black bean quinoa burgers)
Chewy Foods
This section is for foods that work your jaw, but more in a "needing to chew" way.
Potato gnocchi
Dried fruit (comes in all different flavors, not just raisins)
Swedish fish, red vines, skittles or sour patch kids
Granola bars (a lot of types are vegan, read the ingredients before purchasing)
Thick bread-y pizza (our favorite dough recipe)
Pancakes
Chewy chocolate chip cookies
Peanut butter cookies
Baked oatmeal
Potato skins
Meat Substitutes
The most obvious way to make a dish vegan is to sub in the appropriate mock meat. We've eaten quite a few and we won't sugar-coat it: a lot of them are either going to match the taste, texture, OR look. It's hard for mock meats to copy meat 1:1, some get way closer than others, but if you go into this expecting no difference you will be disappointed.
Our two favorite brands are Impossible and Gardein. We've tried a lot of their products and have yet to eat one we don't like.
These aren't your only options though!
Beans
Falafel (deep-fried balls of ground chickpea)
Tofu
Tempeh (fermented soybeans)
Seitan (made from wheat gluten)
Jack fruit
You might have guessed based on the recipes shared, but we usually opt for beans. We haven't eaten much seitan or jack fruit, but they are options. At our local grocery stores they're sold in the "free from" section and can be brought pre-seasoned and ready to cook with. Jack fruit in particular is a popular replacement for shredded pork.
The trick with a lot of these is to marinate them. Tofu in particular so you can infuse it with flavor. Here's a few recipes we love:
Lentil and sweet potato loaf ("Neat"loaf)
Marinated tofu
Crispy tofu sandwiches
Tempeh bacon
Chili (our mom's recipe that we modified)
Soft / Squish
For things that are soft or squishy and you can slurp up.
Seaweed salad
miso soup
Pico de Gallo Black Bean Soup
"Nice" cream
Chocolate mousse
Oatmeal
Popsicles
Applesauce
Brownie batter hummus
Chia seed jam
Lavender syrup (to flavor other drinks, we use it in coffee)
Lavender lemonade (final product will be a light brown color)
Mashed potatoes + Gravy
Slow cooker apple cider
Tofu scramble
JUST egg
Non-dairy mac and cheese (our favorite brand is the upton's)
Smoothies (if you're looking for a protein powder to include, we recommend Vega)
**Just a reminder to supplement for B12 if you're consuming a vegan diet. There are some foods that are fortified with it; however, a supplement is cheap, easy to find and all-around a more reliable way to ensure you are getting enough.

Purrhaps some recipes— preferably low-spoon— for a possumkin who likes to forage sweet or bland foods?? I like eggs, whole grains, any meat (aside from chicken), berries, nuts, etc
Bacon, Beans, and Beef Casserole - I think if you’d wanna make it blander you can use less (or no) barbeque/steak sauce :)
Baked Eggs on Roasted Cherry Tomatoes
Blueberry Granola
Grilled Sirloin with Blackberry Sauce
Tigernut Dessert Bites
Vanilla, Chia, and Oat Pudding with Blueberries
Whole Grain Protein Bowl

Forgive me for showing my fangs a little here instead of being as delicate in phrasing as I usually am, but. Periodic reminder:
sweeping "humans suck, humans are evil, the world would be better off if humans disappeared/had never evolved" statements may be cathartic but they're thoroughly inaccurate (ie, the vast majority of uniquely bad effects of humans on the planet are a) extremely recent, like within the last couple centuries, b) the fault of an extremely small minority not the entire fucking species, and c) fixable)
hating being human isn't the same as hating humans. I get species dysphoria is a thing. I get that it's often hard to fit in as a nonhuman in human social groups and that can make it easy to slip into hating everyone around you. Please fight that instinct
villainizing people for traits they didn't choose, such as the species they were born into, is neither cute nor fair. No species is inherently good or bad
misanthropy is cathartic in short term vents or whatever but genuinely embracing it wholesale as a philosophy is liable to lead to you hating humans, human society, and being in a human body more and more over time and thus make your life worse by constantly reinforcing a thought pattern that makes you angry and upset
you are not immune to being part of human society (translation: just because you're nonhuman doesn't mean you're not included in statements about the effects of the human population on the world, ie "humans are killing the planet")
related, you are not better than humans for being nonhuman. looking at my fellow dragons in particular on this one. I get it, draconic pride is a thing, dragon brain probably says you're the supreme being and all else is beneath you especially anyone who annoys you. Mine does too. Please recognize that is an instinct you are supposed to FIGHT, not something that's TRUE AND THAT YOU SHOULD EMBRACE. Good fucking gods.
some nonhumans are also human (it's me, I'm some nonhumans) and you are making sweeping "humans suck, why would I ever want to be human, all humans do is kill the planet" statements in the presence of people included in those statements, which is insanely rude (and no, you don't get to "but you're different because you're nonhuman" me! you do not get to decide to ignore half of who I am because you don't like it, you do not get to decide I'm not "really" human, and also see the previous bullet point). this goes doubly if you're in a space like a DIscord server where people have expressly stated they're not comfortable being tacitly included in statements like that
saying "but I don't REALLY mean all humans, I just mean the specific ones at fault!" after the fact does not actually change anything if every other thing you say is constantly "humans humans humans" and not the group you're actually referring to, or at the very least doesn't change how it reads to everyone around you

this is quite lovely! simpler recipes for a sweets-loving angelkin, mayhaps? <3
(clears throat)
MY TIME HAS COME
from one sweet-toothed angel to another, here are some of my favourite recipes and sweets!
angel delight - now, this isn’t a recipe. it’s a dessert mix that comes in little packets. but i love this stuff! it’s very fluffy and light! it might be tricky to find or slightly more pricey outside of the uk, but if you can get your hands on some, try adding sprinkles and strawberries (cut into heart shapes if you’re feeling fancy) or banana pieces to the finished dessert.
greek yoghurt with honey - ohhh. oHHHHHH. the joys of a simple bowl of green yoghurt with honey! the best part about this dessert to me is that you can add anything you want, really. this recipe uses walnuts, but if you don’t like walnuts (or just don’t want to use them), try banana, oats, berries, sultanas, plain pumpkin seeds, or other kinds of nuts!
warm milk - you don’t need a recipe for warm milk, but let me give you mine!
heat milk over the stove (not in the microwave). heat on medium-low until you can put a spoon in the pot and see steam rising off the milk when you lift it. do not let it boil!
while milk is heating, stir in a pinch of ground cardamom and/or pinch of nutmeg. you can play with the quantities here, and substitute spices for what’s on hand, so long as it is a spice that tastes good in desserts!
when the milk is done, turn off the heat and pour carefully into a mug.
add a generous swirl of honey and stir until it is dissolved. (personally i love lavender honey in warm milk, but any honey tastes just as good!)
sprinkle cinnamon on top and enjoy! if you heated the milk just right, it should be just the right temperature to drink right away!
of course, there are many, many ways to make warm milk, and many ways to enjoy it! so experiment and have fun! i think that adding a trace amount of almond flavouring and a small layer of frothed milk on top could really elevate this... mmmmmm.... (and since i love warm milk, here’s another recipe anyway). baklava - a little less simplistic, requiring baking and some prep, but still easy for even beginner bakers and with a nice, simple, sweet taste. rich, honeyed, dreamy baklava is probably one of my all-time favourite desserts. if baking it feels beyond you, you can order this at most greek and turkish restaurants! kunafeh - this has a similar taste to baklava, but it’s made with cheese. it also has rose, which i see as a very angelic flavour! it’s harder than the baklava recipe, because the ingredients are likely to be harder to source unless you are lucky enough to live near a mediterranean or middle eastern supermarket.
angel food cake - another baking recipe, the clue’s in the name when it comes to angel food cake! it’s light, airy, and feels like eating clouds! make sure to add a generous amount of strawberries! BONUS: white christmas martini - it’s sparkly, it’s shiny, it’s purely angelic! i haven’t tried this cocktail myself but i fully intend to once the winter holiday season hits. of course, this is very alcoholic, so not a drink for fledgelings! of-age angels only, ya hear? darn kids and their fancy dyed feathers and their BibliTok....

could i request some simple light breakfasts for a raccoonkin..? i have trouble eating and breakfast is something i struggle with the most so I'm hoping to umm maybe remedy that .. perhaps easy on the meat suggestions if it's not too difficult
I have 3 raccoon asks, so I'm gonna do them all together to make sure no one gets duplicates!!
You got it, friend! I'll try to do mostly non-meat things~ I hope eggs are okay? I know raccoons LOOOOOVE eggs, but idk if that's okay for you?
I know raccoons dip things in water, but it's actually a way of getting more information about the food! Raccoons have a much more sensitive sense of touch than anything else, so they use their hands more than their eyes and noses. So here's a bunch of finger foods!!
Mini Blueberry Hand Pies
Heart Strawberry Hand Pies
Fruit and Cream Cheese Pastries
Sweet Potato Banana Muffins
Easy Cinnamon French Toast Sticks
Egg and Hash Brown Bites
Pumpkin Breakfast Bites (no bake~)
Baked Oatmeal Cups
Muffin Tin Frittatas
Pumpkin Butterscotch Muffins
Honey-Pecan Mini Muffins
Easy Egg Mini Muffins
Granola Crust Fruit Tart
Breakfast Cookies
Sticky Buns
Easy Honey Biscuits (Great with This Sauce for dunking!!)
Maple Bacon Scones (Bacon Optional)
Apple Fritters
Easy Devilled Eggs
I hope this helps~!!!
