theres a joke in lolita communities that everyone starts out as a super pink ott sweet lolita because its the most visible and out there substyle but will eventually mature and tone down their sweet styling or even shift into other substyles like classic or old school with time and it always makes me stare at my every day non lolita wardrobe and think gee i sure hope not

very quick guide to basic lolita fashion/ egl terms
egl - stands for elegant gothic lolita (used due to the associations of just saying ‘lolita’)
coord - coordinate; a full egl/ lolita outfit
wa - substyle based on traditional japanese clothing/ details
qi  - see above but with china
old-school - based on styles from when fashion was newer. shorter skirts (slightly) with lots of lace and tiering. generally plain colour or simple patterns. old-school dresses can be any substyle (except hime)
hime - princess style. not actually very common/ popular. sometimes referred to as OTT (insert substyle). hime is pretty much those princess dresses you see in historical manhua/ manhwas like who made me a princess or reincarnation plot number 75 (not an actual title).
otome - refers to otome fashion/ otome kei, another modest feminine style
kuro/ shiro - monochrome coords themed around black/ white respectively
sweet, gothic, country and classic are more obvious.

Is the ask game still going? If it is 2,3, and 6
2. What was your first piece?
So my first ever piece was an awful Gothic Lolita & Punk JSK that I bought in camden when I was 14. I've shared it on here before, and tbh I don't really count it as proper lolita.
The first real lolita piece I bought was this Bodyline dress:

3. What is your most recent piece?
I've bought (& traded) quite a few pieces recently. One of those was Strawberry Princess OP by Angelic Pretty
Tumblr media
6. How has the way you wear lolita changed since you’ve been in the fashion?
So as you can see from the photo above, my style has changed quite a bit since I started wearing lolita. When I started, I was 14/15 and relied on saving up pocket money to buy bodyline which was basically all I could afford. Since I was new, it was very easy to get caught up in what's popular, so in the early days I was very influenced by the OTT sweet trend and by Princess Peachie since she wore a lot of bodyline. I realised that the ultra sweet look wasn't for me and slowly veered more classic, trying historically inspired coords for a while. In 2014 I kind of realised that trying to follow the trends when I couldn't really afford to wasn't much fun, and that what I loved most was oldschool. That was what I'd originally fallen in love with as a kid. Plus at the time old school was dirt cheap because it wasn't very popular, which was perfect for me as someone who didn't have much money.
Obviously since then I now wear exclusively old school, I wear sweet gothic and classic but tend to avoid ultra sugary sweet, and my wardrobe is majority 2nd hand brand compared to mostly new bodyline. Also my makeup skills are better lmao.
Funnily enough I still own and use the handbag in the photo above in coords today lol.

I ordered my very first (Lolita!) petticoat today! I'm finally going to dress like a Lolita, even if I've felt one in my heart for the longest time--in terms of not wanting to ever let go of childhood wonder, living life like a fairy tale, an adoration for frills, lace, pastels, and a longing for the sweetness of childhood dresses! I just don't care for most modern fashion aimed at adults, but I do appreciate the recent trends to have more vintage-inspired looks!
Classic Lolita's actually my favourite (so, Innocent World and Victorian Maiden appeal to me the most!), especially if it's subtle enough you could wear it to parties and not-Lolita-specific events... I'm not fond of OTT Sweet Lolita, but I do like more subtle Sweet Lolita... I even do like some of the bigger prints and such! The animal and carousel or carnival print ones... ;3; I also like Alice-themed stuff, even if it's considered kind of cliche at this point. I just do!
Hime Lolita looks very pretty and elegant, but I don't know much about it...
Wunderwelt and closet child both have good prices on second-hand Lolita dresses, both from the major brands (like Baby the Stars Shine Bright, Angelic Pretty, Innocent World, Victorian Maiden, etc.) and from indie designers who sell on Taobao. The petticoat I got was new, made by Wunderwelt. ^^
Still attempting to decide on a first dress or two, aha... I have. So many tabs open. Mama's trying to help me decide too.
ما شاء الله.

Heyhi~ time for an updated About Me post!
Cat or Rin, either is fine, she/her. I'm 6'2, cis, bi, plus sized, and white af. I'm 32, married, and currently housing 7 cats in a smallish apartment. 2 are fosters and one is an emotional support kitty. On the note, I have anxiety and depression, ADD, a couple learning disabilities (math and writing), and am autistic. Most of which wasn't discovered until I was 29. My special interests are cats, sewing/fashion, DnD, dolls/repainting, and The Sims, which I've been playing since 2004, starting with Sims 1.
I'm also disabled with partial mobility mostly due to fibromyalgia, cl-EDS/hypermobility, POTS, and a host of other health issues. These tend to keep me indoors more often than not. But I'd love to be able to go to a meetup...once I actually have something to wear.
I'm in the process of designing and making my own lolita wardrobe, from head to toe to wrists and even tights, as well as possibly including shoes now. I wear a size 15/whatever size 310mm is 🤷🏼‍♀️, and finding shoes that actually fit length wise is extremely difficult. I have a couple last 3D models that were custom made for my feet. I plan now to make almost all of my wardrobe if I can, though I do have some shoes that'll work well with my planned coords in the meantime. My main styles are sweet (not ott), classic, and country. I have two JSKs and blouses in the works for once I finish drafting the basic blocks.
Due to my height/bootay, most brand pieces seem to be too short for my comfort, even with bloomers (I aim for roughly 70cm/27in for skirt length and preferably not shorter than that). I am a firm knee length believer, it's just that knee length on me is hard to find, and always has been. (Try being 6'2 at 13/14, with school dress codes.)
In my machine army, I have a plain Brother cs6000i that I never serviced, but have had since 2014ish, when I got it used from my G'mum. I have a Brother 1634d serger, and yet another Brother machine: a pe770 embroidery machine. Beyond sewing machines, I also have 3 SLA 3D printers (Qidi iBox Mono 8.9, Saturn 2, and a Creality ld002-r), and a Creality CR10s-Pro FDM printer, a Cricut Maker, BJD casting equipment (pressure pot+air compressor), and an airbrush, plus some soldering stuff that I don't use.
I've also got over 200 blank (faceless, hairless, and nakee) Monster High dolls that I will eventually either repaint or sell. (Especially now that I have 3D models of the older and rarer dolls! 😁) Not overly relevant but thought I'd share that tidbit. I'm also in the process of 3D modeling my own BJD.
I'll likely just edit this post from now on when something changes, as well as other small life updates.
