February 23, 1998

IT'S A TYPICAL SUNNY MORNING in the academy full of loud students scattered in every hallway you walk into, every student has their own things to do on their own while some just chill along with their friend group. Others just couldn't care less but break some of the academy's rules, some say it's just for fun, while others just stated it's something you couldn't do every day, that thing you could only do once in your lifetime I suppose.

The Professors couldn't even give any of their care to them but just let them be. Because the next thing you knew, during training they would give their biggest fit to those certain students who have broken the rules and other things that have made them upset.

Training isn't something you couldn't make fun of, that's for sure.

"[Y/n] [L/n], you are assigned to be at the RPD this afternoon for your extended classes. Huh, this might be the first time in a while I have seen a student get recruited by the RPDs, you must be that special to get in. Good luck on your training I suppose, I heard they don't go easy on their interns." [Y/n]'s Professor chuckled seeing how her face turned white after hearing his statement.

"You'll do fine, I have heard good news from your professors in other subjects. You have been on top of your classes, and I'm not that surprised anymore when I heard that you're quite a killer when you're in the field in training." Her Professor reassured her as [Y/n]'s heart finally calmed down.

"Y-you think so?" She asked as she fiddled with her fingers together.

"I know so. Now go on, lunch is almost done, we don't want you leaving here with an empty stomach now are we?" They shooed her away as [Y/n] only chuckled at them. Beeding her goodbyes she left their office with a wide grin on her lips.

She walks away with a brown folder in hand that the professor gave her before she left. She had already taken notice of how quiet her surroundings were, blinking away. She quickly looked down at her watch to see that she's gonna miss lunch in about 11 minutes. The cafeteria is located on the other side of the building in her unfortunate. She swiftly runs through the empty hallways; then the courtyards she goes!

'Food is a must!' she quotes inside her head.

She ran inside the building and continuously huffed some air as she ran. Looking back to check the time, she only has 6 minutes to be on time before the cafeteria closes. Picking up her pace she quickly slid on the glassy floors as she u-turned on the way.

Finally, she walked inside the cafeteria that had only a few students left; eating their lunch away. She sighed in relief seeing that she made it in time.

'Biscuits will do.' She says to herself before grabbing a few of them from the counter, she puts the others inside her pockets as a snack later. She intended to eat while she was on the way to the department.

'To the RPD we go!' [Y/n] excitedly exits the university gates as she shoves biscuits in her mouth.

Y/n's POV

"Anybody here named [Y/n] [L/n]? Please come to the front desk." I nervously nibbled on the tip of my nail as I heard my name being announced, I got up from my seat feeling people stare at me. I ignored their stares as I tried to calm my nerves down. Walking to the front desk I look at the officer in front of me who's skimming through a parchment in her hand. She looked up to see me standing in front of her and gave me a gentle smile.

"You must be the new intern Lieutenant has been speaking fondly of, the names Rita Philips! I'm so glad to finally have new faces around here, mainly because we don't recruit female interns that much so I guess that is why I'm excited to work with the same nature as I am!" The short-blonde officer exclaimed happily as she motioned me to follow her.

"Not quite a talker are you huh?" She asked as we walked through the busy hallways of the department. I shrugged my shoulders as I just smiled at her, it's no false statement when they say I'm a quiet type of person. I just really don't talk too much, fearing that I might say something that would offend those people who I interact with.

"That's fine, I'm sure you'll grow to love everyone here!" Rita says as we continue to walk around. An officer waves at Rita from afar as she could only roll her eyes at him in response. "Well, most of them…"

"Ah! Here we are, are you fine going alone inside?" The blonde asked.

"I think I'll be fine on my own…" I said as she nodded at my response completely understanding why I turned down her offer to come with me.

"Alright then, I'll head back to the front desk if you need any assistance around the area, you know your way back right?" Nodding my head, she left with a big smile plastered on her lips. I held my breath as I looked at the oak door in front of me, Lieutenant Marvin Branagh the sign said. I released the breath I was holding for the last minute, I raised my hand and knocked on the door. Thrice.

The door opened revealing a middle-aged man who must be around his 40s or so. As he took a good look at me he gave me a bright smile as steps aside to let me inside his office.

"It's good to finally meet you [Y/n] [L/n], we've been expecting you to attend here for quite some time now." He motioned me to take a seat on the empty couch near his desk.

"After seeing your records from your professors, we know that we wanted you to work for us. As you may have heard, I'm Lieutenant Marvin Branagh, I'll be the one to supervise you throughout your training here in the RPD." He then quickly notices my sudden movement as I anxiously pinch the ends of my nails with my fingers. He gave me a warm smile that made me calm down just a bit.

"No need to get all so nervous now [Y/n], I know for sure that you'll do great things around here." He reassured me while giving me a slight pat on my shoulder.

"Let's discuss a few things now, shall we?"

A few months later…

September 23, 1998

"Congrats on being a valedictorian [Y/n]!" Officer Rita came up to me with a banquet of flowers in hand. I felt my heart leap out of my chest as I saw a few other people who I've been working with for the past month: came up to me with the widest smiles and grins as they approached. Officers started to pat my back as they congratulated me on my success.

"Thank you so much!" I thanked them as they quickly left to start doing their own things.

"Lieutenant Marvin!" [Y/n] exclaimed as she saw her supervisor walk towards her.

"[Y/n], I see you have come here to take a visit again now are we?" He asked cheekily while rubbing my head with his hand.

"Congratulations by the way, we knew this day would be coming. Now that you graduated… You can now start working here starting next week!" Marvin happily said as I can feel myself jumping up from joy but contained myself to just give him a smile in response. After all the harsh training I've had in the academy since day one, everything I had done has finally paid off!

Before I could say anything, he suddenly handed me a blue box which made me curious about what was inside it. I then held the bouquet between my arms as I held the tiny box with two hands. When I opened it, I felt my lips grow wider as I saw my tag name inside. 'Officer [Y/n] [L/n]'.

I opened my mouth to thank him but quickly closed them shut immediately when we heard harsh-loud footsteps coming in our direction.

"Lieutenant Marvin!" An officer called out—sweats pouring down his face as he panted harshly as he stumbled down on his knees. This alerted us quickly as we kneeled down beside the officer who continuously tried to regain his normal breathing.

"Hey—Hey! Calm down Kevin, what's going on?" Marvin pulled him up by his arm as Officer Kevin took a deep breath before looking at him straight in the eye.

"There's a huge explosion that happened near [Y/n]'s academy…" His statement made me choke on my own spit as me and Marvin looked at him with wide eyes. The Lieutenant swiftly took a hold of his walkie-talkie as we quickly headed towards the front desk.

"We need to back up near the Police academy in the north immediately! Bring the RFD too!"

3rd person's POV

"What the hell…" [Y/n] nearly lost her breath as she looked towards the firing building in front of her. This was her academy, where she just graduated not long ago. It was fine a couple of hours ago, and now it has turned into chaos.

"H-HELP PLEASE! MY SON IS S-STILL INSIDE!"

"DAD!?"

"PLEASE SEND HELP!"

"[Y/n], I want you to help as many people as you can, but don't overdo it." Lieutenant Marvin instructed as the [hair-colored] girl shifted even so slightly at the sudden explosions which made people around her shout even more out of fear. [Y/n] quickly snapped back out of her thoughts, feeling her eyes start to water at the sight, but quickly shook the feelings away as she nodded at her Lieutenant with a determined look. She has already done studying in the academy and she knows for sure that she could use this now more than ever. She doesn't want to disappoint the Lieutenant now that she has a big responsibility on her shoulders.

And before she knew it, she was sprinting towards the entrance of the academy feeling a sudden heat rushing on her body but ignored it. [Y/n] had gotten inside the building and was met with another explosion not far away, but she was quick enough to dodge it before it could explode. She heard loud cries coming from her left and she didn't hesitate to run off and headed there.

"P-PLEASE HELP!" Someone shouted behind the fallen planks as fire danced around the area.

"Hold on just there ma'am! I'm coming to get you out of here, is there anyone with you!?" [Y/n] shouted as she quickly took a hold of the edge of the planks as she pushed them out of the way.

"T-there's only a few of us here! P-please hurry!" The person behind the door choked in the middle of her sentence as she coughed harshly making [Y/n] panic. 'I need to take these planks away, fast!'

Grunting as she felt her hands burn. 'This hurt as fuck!' She curses under her breath as she continues to take away the planks revealing an oaked door behind it. She fumbled her hands in her pockets as she took out a handkerchief using it to twist the knob that was piping hot. The door finally opened and was met with people rushing out of the room. Along the way, the person who was calling for help earlier hugged her tightly as she said "Thank you, thank you!"

"C'mon! The building is about to collapse anytime now!" [Y/n] shouted as she and the survivors ran through the burning hallways.

[Y/n] suddenly heard a small yelp behind her as she looked behind to see a child laying on the ground. She then quickly stumbled back to run to them as she kneeled down to carry the crying child in her arms.

"[Y/n]!" The [haired colored] girl looks at the exit to see Lieutenant Marvin waving at her frantically as people quickly run outside. The girl heard the ceiling cracks as she sprinted towards the exit hearing her Lieutenant shouting at her, looking up; she could see the cracks start to form rather quickly as she started to pick up her pace while the child was holding onto her neck so tightly.

"It's ok kid, I got you…" She whispered, earning a silent whimper in response.

With a last sprint, she was pulled by the collar as she was dragged down to the exit.

'BOOMMM!'

With ringing ears; [Y/n] opened her blurry eyes as she looked at the flames coming out of the exit in front of her, she released tired breaths he didn't know she'd been holding as she took notice of her surroundings. The child lay loosely beside her who seemed to be unharmed but had scratches and burns here and there, but she was sure it was nothing major. But from a child's point of view, it would've hurt as hell. She then looked to her other side to see her Lieutenant in a kneeling position as he rubbed his throbbing head, the explosion must've hit him hard.

The girl gets up and she then feels a sudden ache everywhere in her body as she groans at the feeling.

'You've been through worse, just suck it in!' She said in her head as she got up along with the unconscious child in her arms. She stumbled a bit but quickly regained her composure, she faced Lieutenant Marvin as she handed her hand to him to take.

Marvin looks up to see [Y/n] holding up a hand to him, he chuckles silently as he grabs her hand helping the man get up on his feet.

"What might've caused all this…" [Y/n] asked, her voice above a whisper. But Marvin has quite a good hearing as he could only shake his head and still has no idea what has happened.

"I have no idea [Y/n], but we should go get the kid to the ambulance to get treated, and you too, you have a cut right above your eyebrows. Right… There." Marvin touched the wound on [Y/n]'s head as she winced in pain.

"You as well Lieutenant, yours doesn't look so pretty to look at…" She winces a bit looking at the blood dripping down his left cheek.

"I've been through worse, it's nothing really. C'mon, let's leave this mess to the RFDs now."

September 24, 1998

Y/n's POV

"Officer [Y/n], Lieutenant Marvin wants to have a word with us," Rita says behind my desk as I recurrently get up from my seat. When I looked up, I was met with an exhausted Officer Rita. I mean, who wouldn't blame her? Me and the other officers haven't gotten a blink of sleep ever since the incident yesterday. Lieutenant and Rita have told me to take a rest and leave all the work to them but I didn't just want to sit around and do nothing knowing something bad is happening. Or something dangerous we don't know of.

When we both got inside the Lieutenant's office we were bombarded with papers scattered on the table, a few were on the ground but seeing how the Lieutenant looks exhausted like the rest, if I could guess he might have not had the motivation to make his office decent.

"What's with all the papers?" Rita asked as she suppressed to let out a tired yawn. Nodding at her question, as I looked at him waiting for him to answer. But out of curiosity, I picked up one of the papers on the ground as I got up to take a closer look at it.

Skimming through the report, her eyes caught her interest in that one particular statement.

'I wasn't drunk or anything like that, I was out with my friends at the bar; drinking but I was sober for the whole time! But when I drove one of my friends to go home we just… we suddenly hit someone. No, no, no! Something, you can call me mental or shit but I know what I saw that night, last night. When we got out of the car to check it was dead, it looked dead even! We even tried to drive them to the hospital but while I was driving the person we hit started to rise up a-and shoot themselves to bite almost half of my friend's face! I-I'm just glad that I was ok but my friend… P-please you have to believe me! I'm telling the truth!—'

"W-what's up with this report…" I felt myself shivering at the thought of someone doing a cannibal on one of their own kind. Like, what the fuck? What is all this?!

"People around the city have been constantly coming back and forth here since yesterday, and the incident with the explosions didn't help quite a lot. They've been talking about those dead-like humans who're performing cannibalism and other such unbelievable things. After hearing one of those reports I thought to myself—was this some kind of sick joke? Because who in the hell would've believed that kind of thing, but after what happened today, I…I don't even know what to believe anymore…" The Lieutenant runs his hand over his face as he runs through the report. I scrunch my face in disgust feeling a sudden outburst to puke but I couldn't as I read through more of the reports that were given today.

"Jesus! What the hell is happening to the world…" Rita trembled as she looked down at the report I was holding.

"But… Why exactly did you call us?" I asked him. He was silent for a moment as he then got up from his sit; approaching us with a weary look.

"I feel like something bad is going to happen to the city: something big we couldn't know of. I want you two to take charge of any dangerous transactions that may happen along with Officer Kevin, no questions asked. Just follow the orders, got it?"

As we nodded, Rita and I were told to take a rest for now. We headed out of the building; still wearing our uniforms, we took a stroll to a nearby café not far away from the headquarters.

Rita then started talking about the new officer who's joining us next week, which quite surprised me now that they're just telling me this piece of information. Having a new officer at the RPD is a big thing.

"Why tell me this now?! God! I could have thought of making preparations for a surprise welcome party for him, you know?" I slumped down on my seat feeling a bit left out of the group as Rita could only laugh at my saddened expression.

"Not to worry little [Y/n], we still really haven't made a whole plan yet to set up since you know how it goes at the headquarters. We're all busy and all." She laughed a little as she drank her coffee. Rolling my eyes at the nickname, I nudged her feet under the table as she almost spits out the coffee she was drinking.

"S-since when did you ever disrespect your elders?" The blonde coughs a bit as she looks at me dead in the eye.

"Hmm… someone did tell me to grow some confidence in what they do, for paybacks and such—But, for your information, I do respect my elders."

"Damn right! I'm so proud that you're learning something from me." She chuckled softly as Rita got up from her seat. I watched her closely.

"C'mon, he might arrive at the headquarters by next week, but… it wouldn't hurt if we head on to start decorating the office now should we?" She said as I quickly got up from my seat, obviously getting all so excited. She held out her hand to me as I was about to take her hand. There was a sudden shouting coming from the distance.

Me and Rita got alerted by this as we sprinted to where the commotion was coming from.

"G-GET OFF OF ME! GAH!—"

When we got closer to the other side of the road, we saw bodies splattered everywhere. Blood dripped down their necks—down to their bodies as I almost gagged at the sight. Rita beside me stood on her ground frozen as we stared at the dead-like person rip the person's face apart.

'What the hell is going on…' I thought to myself as my eyes were wide as plates looked directly at the gore-y scene unfolding right in front of me. I held my matilda that was placed on my holster but I couldn't take it out as I was too busy staring at the corpse around me.

"[Y/n]! Call up the team immediately!" I was suddenly snapped back out of my thoughts as Rita shouted at me.

"Snap out of it Officer [Y/n] and call the fucking team now!" I held in my breath as I quickly fumble in my pockets then took out my walkie-talkie. I held them right above my mouth.

"W-we need the team out to back up f-from a dangerous transaction here at the café near the station! Please hurry!" I panicked as my voice trembled in mid-sentence. I quickly looked where Rita had headed off.

I then saw her prying off the corpse on top of the other as it hissed at her like a mantra. She didn't notice a corpse crawling down to her feet as I shouted—"RITA! BEHIND YOU!"

But it was too late, she was bitten by the leg as she screamed in agony. It made my head throb as I looked at her wide-eyed, I didn't know I was gasping for air as I felt tears start to pour down my cheeks.

'Fuck—FUCK! GOD NO!—' I gritted my teeth; running up to Rita who has already fallen on her knees trying to shove the head of the corpse that is still biting onto her bleeding leg. I took out my matilda in a swift motion as I reloaded it quickly and without any hesitation. I pressed the trigger. The corpse's head exploded into pieces as Rita almost yelled in fear as she looked at me with wide eyes. "[Y-Y/n]..." She whispered before passing out in the middle of the road.

This made me flinch as I quickly went beside her to aid her bitten leg. But soon hears silent groans beside me.

'WHAT THE HELL?! THEY WERE DEAD MOMENTS AGO!' I yelled inside my head as I looked at another looking corpse laying not far away as it looked me in the eye with pure hunger. It suddenly pounced on me making me stumble on the ground groaning with the sudden pain in my back.

"FUCK!" I cussed as I pulled their head back away from my face. 'Get off. Get off—GET OFF YOU SON OF A BITCH!' I grunted as its head was only an inch closer to my face.

"Fat chance you'll get a bite out of me you fucker!—" I yelled as I collided my head on its forehead with force making my head throb more in pain. The corpse lay beside me for a good moment before it started to wiggle around. I heard sirens coming in our way as people continuously yelled in panic around the area. Other bodies that have bitten started to rise up like I was in a fucking zombie movie. How fucking ironic.

"Lieutenant Marvin!" I yelled seeing a familiar face through the crowd as I kneeled beside Rita, swinging her arms around my neck.

"C'mon now Rita… Just hang in there, we still have a lot of plans that we need to do!" I groaned as I walked towards the Lieutenant who looked shocked to see Rita's condition; but even the things that are happening right now.

"How did this happen?!" He asked as he came closer to loop Rita's other arm around his neck.

"S-she was bitten by those things!" I explained as I grunted feeling her arms suddenly got tightened around my neck. 'Somethings wrong…'

The blonde who was unconscious started growling as I frantically looked at her: checking if she was ok.

"R-Rita?" I silently begged for her to respond but nothing came out of her mouth but groans and growls. 'Something is definitely wrong with her—has she turned one of them?' My breath hitched as I saw Rita's face to see her eyes fully turned white, her face pale as hell as her veins were completely noticeable.

"Officer Rita—snap out of it! It's no time to joke around now!" Lieutenant Marvin yelled at her as he still couldn't take the hint of what was going on.

"L-Lieutenant! Step away from her!" I quickly let go of her as I quickly walked up to him as I pushed him away with such force trying to get his grasp away from Rita's figure.

"What?! [Y/n]—we have to get her to the hospital-"."Lieutenant… T-that isn't Rita anymore…" I whimpered as I stared at Rita's corpse-like standing on her ground with her shoulders slumped forward.

"B-bloody hell…" He cussed as he took a good look at Rita's face with a horrified look. I felt my eyes water. Seeing her like this doesn't make anything better as I looked around to see people running away from the corpse who chased after them. These poor innocent people are getting killed by them.

Is this all just a bad dream?' I asked myself as I wiped away the tears that stained my cheeks.

If this thing bites people—they could turn just like them… It's like an infection–a virus that could infect people if they get bitten.

"W-we have to kill her…"."WHAT?! Are you out of your damn mind Officer?" Lieutenant said angrily as he pries his eye off of Rita's slumping figure.

"IT'S THE ONLY WAY! THESE THINGS ARE INFECTING TO WHATEVER IT MAY BITE—AND RITA HAS ONE ON HER LEG. I-I couldn't even save her—these things did this to her… and I couldn't even do anything to prevent this from happening to her! It's either they get into a mass of numbers and we get killed—or we kill it so that these things wouldn't kill more of our innocent people!" I shouted at him in one breath. Panting as my vision turns blurry. 'God, I'm crying again aren't I? How pathetic.'

The Lieutenant looks at me with a blank look before looking at his own gun in her holster. He stayed silent for a moment then held his head up to look at me.

"A-alright… we kill these things right here, right now. Get ready and start shooting!" I nodded quickly as we started running away in different directions. I reload my gun as I hold up the matilda firmly in my hold as I shoot at the corpse head that comes in my way.

This is not the raccoon city that I've grown to love, not until this day. It's now a place that I buried to hate deep down in my heart.

"If you ever received this email, don't even bother coming here to raccoon city. We're in full lockdown: and we don't want you to be involved with anything that is happening right now. You're lucky that you aren't here like the other officers who're stuck here. Believe me, you'll thank me in the future. Live your life to the fullest, Rookie."

For some reason Tumblr was obsessed with combining Pokemon and Disco Elysium, resulting in a comic on my dashboard of Kim investigating a steroid/protein juicing outbreak, only to see that it made people and their Pokemon hella jacked, and he ended up joining in on the crowd of people demanding some.

A 4-year-old from Detroit has a confirmed case of the measles, and potentially exposed others while seeking treatment for the highly infectious virus at DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan, an urgent care center and a pharmacy in the city, the Detroit Health Department announced Wednesday.

It is Michigan's fifth documented measles case this year.

The child was unvaccinated, said Dr. Claudia Richardson, the city health department's medical director, and had no history of international travel. Measles is so contagious, 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed to the virus will become infected.

City health officials said they are working with the state health department to investigate where the child might have been exposed to the virus. So far, however, the case appears to be isolated, Richardson said.

"This is definitely an ongoing investigation," she said, "so we're in the middle of that. At this time, we do not have a source of the infection."

The child was not hospitalized, Richardson said, but was treated in the emergency department at Children's Hospital and is now following isolation protocol.

Anyone who was at the following places at these times and dates may have been exposed to the virus:

From noon to 3 p.m. April 1 at Acadian Urgent Care, 2117 Springwells, Detroit.

From 5-10 a.m. April 3 in the emergency department at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan, 3901 Beaubien Blvd., Detroit.

Children’s Hospital of Michigan did not respond to questions from the Free Press about how many people may have been exposed to the measles in the emergency department on April 3 or about how the hospital is notifying them.

Health leaders urge anyone who might have been exposed to the virus April 1-3 to monitor themselves for symptoms for 21 days. If symptoms develop, call ahead before visiting a doctor, urgent care center or hospital emergency room so precautions may be taken to avoid exposing others.

"We're ... doing our routine communicable disease investigation, which requires us to reach out to anyone that may have had direct contact. So far, all we know are family members," Richardson said, adding: "We are trying to get the word out the best we can."

What are the symptoms of measles?

Measles symptoms typically begin seven to 14 days after exposure, but can first appear as long as 21 days after exposure and can include:

High fever that could reach 104 degrees or higher.

Cough.

Runny nose.

Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis).

Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums and roof of the mouth called Koplik Spots, which usually appear two to three days after symptoms begin.

A rash that starts on the face and spreads to the trunk, arms and legs, typically three to five days after symptoms begin. The rash is red, raised and blotchy.

"Infected people can spread measles before noticing any symptoms, including four days before and four days after the rash appears," Denise Fair Razo, chief public health officer for the Detroit health department, said in a statement. "Our best advice is to get vaccinated against measles if you have not already done so. It is part of the two-dose measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) series of childhood vaccines."

2 doses of MMR vaccine are 97% effective at preventing measles

Measles infections are preventable with widespread vaccination. Two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR), offer 97% protection from infection. A single dose is about 93% effective.

However, in Michigan, immunization rates have fallen to 66% among Michigan toddlers — the lowest point in more than a decade for recommended childhood immunizations, according to MDHHS.

What is the recommendation for measles vaccinations?

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends:

A first dose of the MMR vaccine for children ages 12-15 months old, with a booster dose administered between ages 4 and 6.

Anyone born in or after 1957 without evidence of immunity against measles or documentation of having been vaccinated with two doses of MMR vaccine should get vaccinated.

Two doses are recommended for adults at high risk, such as international travelers, college students and health care personnel born during or after 1957.

People exposed to measles who cannot document immunity against the virus should get post-exposure prophylaxis — a dose of the vaccine to potentially provide protection within 72 hours of initial exposure, or immunoglobulin within six days of exposure.

How serious is a measles infection?

Measles can cause serious illness, long-term disability and death in people of all ages.

About 1 in 5 people who get the measles end up hospitalized, according to the CDC, and 1 in 20 kids with measles develops pneumonia. Roughly 1 out of every 1,000 children who have measles infections will also have encephalitis. Brain swelling from encephalitis can lead to convulsions, permanent hearing loss, intellectual disability and death.

Anywhere from 1 to 3 out of every 1,000 children with measles dies from respiratory or neurologic complications from the virus.

"We've had the vaccine since 1963, and before the vaccine was available, every year across the U.S., between 400 and 500 people died," Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan's chief medical officer, told the Free Press for a previous article. "Four hundred to 500 people may not seem like ... huge numbers, but it is a lot, especially if you're talking about your loved one or your child."

Notification too late for post-exposure treatment

The Detroit child's measles case was confirmed Tuesday, Richardson said, but public notification was not made until Wednesday afternoon, when anyone who was potentially exposed to the virus would be outside the window for treatment with post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent infection.

A dose of the MMR vaccine can be administered 72 hours of initial measles exposure and immunoglobulin can be given intravenously within six days of exposure to potentially prevent illness, according to the CDC.

By Wednesday afternoon, that window had closed.

"We are out of both of those windows and ... we were going through the dates very rigorously," Richardson said.

What can be done now, she said, is to educate the public about the potential exposures, what to do if they develop symptoms, and to urge vaccination.

"That's where we're focusing," Richardson said. "When situations like this arise, it brings preventable diseases such as measles to the forefront. ... It's the perfect opportunity for us to stress the importance of vaccination."

The Detroit Health Department offers vaccinations for measles and all childhood vaccination series, plus COVID-19, flu and Mpox at its Immunizations Clinic at 100 Mack Ave. Hours are: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays by appointment. Walk-ins are welcome from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Late hours are available on the first and third Thursdays of each month, when the clinic is open 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

Michigan is not at outbreak status

This is the fifth known measles case in Michigan in 2024.

Two cases were identified in March in Washtenaw County. The second person is believed to have been exposed to the virus at Trinity Health Ann Arbor's waiting and triage area, where another Washtenaw County resident contagious with measles had gone for care.

An adult from Wayne County who had traveled internationally and had no record of measles immunization had the virus in February.

An Oakland County child who was unvaccinated and had traveled internationally was the first known case of measles in Michigan this year, state health officials announced Feb. 23.

Although Michigan health leaders have reported five measles cases since February, the situation doesn't yet rise to the level of an outbreak, according to the definition set by the CDC, which identifies an outbreak as a chain of transmission including three or more cases linked in time and space.

As of April 4, there have been 113 cases of measles in the U.S. this year, according to the CDC, and 58% of the people infected with the virus nationally in 2024 have been hospitalized for isolation or for management of measles complications.

Among those 113 cases, the CDC has recognized seven measles outbreaks, which include 73% of cases identified in 2024.

Comparatively, there were 58 total U.S. measles cases in 2023 and four outbreaks.

Patient Zero

An index case, or patient zero, is the first person to present specific symptomatology. While generally it is used in regards to contagious diseases, it has other uses as well.

The term is slightly controversial due to its non-specific implications. It can refer to the first case of a disease ever, the first case in a specific location, or the first case detected. The diverse meanings of the word may lead to confusion and lack of clarity.

As such, this prompt refers to the first person to either be detected, or ever present, a specific set of symptoms. At minimum, they are the first person to experience the symptoms in a given area.
