Love that Oxenfree II really drives home the message that life is actually full of time loops of our own making. Generational trauma is a time loop. Grief is a time loop. Avoiding any life choices by going to bars and rotting away in front of your tv day after day is a time loop. Staying in your hometown is a time loop. The routine of making a living and the inherent monotony of adulthood is a time loop.

FUCK just realised that by choosing riley at the end she made the exact same choice her mom did, abandoning rex before she even had him… jeez… realising now also that means the choice was always between becoming either her mom or her dad, giving up or ultimately failing… oh man

Ik letting Olivia go is commonly considered the best ending just because every other ending is more obviously and immediately worse but I can't help but think, well... Olivia deserves to grow up too. She might be happier living in the static past before her parents died but I could imagine another world where she got to grow up, find other things that make the present worth living, process her grief and walk out of the time loop of her own denial. It's what she wanted, but she wanted it in that moment, that tiniest fragment of the length of her life that could have been - that will now determine her forever. Would she want this forever?
