When Peter imagined his first date with MJ, he expected less sleuthing and more romance-y stuff that everybody else did when they started dating. Like watching a movie, or going out for dinner, or even texting about going on dates but just watching obscure YouTube videos together instead. He should’ve never expected less of MJ to be completely MJ-like. 

It was yesterday when they were hanging out in his room when she asked him out. Ned had gone to ask Aunt May if she had any snacks lying around and MJ was throwing paper balls at his face to see if he really could dodge it. After a few moments of him moving his head around, he let one of them hit his head just so he could hear MJ groan. “You’re supposed to avoid it, Peter. So much for your Peter tingle.”

“It’s called Spider-sense,” Peter countered automatically, sighing. It seemed like Aunt May’s influence reached everywhere. “And sometimes I just live to be contrary.”

“I can’t believe I’m dating you,” MJ said, deadpanned. 

Peter just grinned up at her. “I mean we technically haven’t gone on a real date yet.”

“Fine, then we’ll go on a date tomorrow,” she said, scrunching up another piece of paper that might have been an old sketch. “Wear your Spidey suit.”

“My Spidey—what? Wait, what are we doing?” 

“You’ll find out. Meet you here at 8 tomorrow.”

“Okay,” Peter agreed, shrugging. 

And, boy, did he find out. MJ showed up in an all black outfit, a turtleneck and some soft-looking leggings, and her frizzy curls were slicked back into a low ponytail. Her only accessory was a camera resting on her chest the next day. There was a little shine to her lips that Peter knew was her lip gloss and he couldn’t help but lean in and kiss her, not minding the sickly sweet taste it left in his mouth. “Hey,” he breathed, then leaned back. 

She gave him a bright grin that made him sweat a little in his suit. She replied in the same tone, “Hey.”

Peter interlocked her hand with hers easily and led them to the fire escape. He tugged on his mask as he looked out of this window, checking to see if anyone or anything was watching. When he was sure everything was clear, he stepped outside and held out a hand to help her climb out. 

“Ugh,” she said, scowling and cracking her back. “These are not tall people friendly windows.”

“I got in there easily,” he pointed out. 

MJ smirked. “Yeah, but we can’t all be bite-sized.”

“I’m two inches shorter than you.” He placed his hands on his hips. “Anyway, where are we going.”

“You know that new Oscorp building that popped up in Queens?” MJ asked. He nodded. Given his job of swinging around, it was hard not to notice it but it wasn’t the most romantic building he’d seen. Then again, when was MJ up for cliché filmesque dates? “We’re gonna break in and maybe take a couple of pictures.”

“Break… in,” he said, trying to process. “Why?”

MJ sighed. “I did some research—” which was code for: I asked Ned to help hack into their files “—and they were doing some shady shit to endangered species. Like, borderline call your representative to the UN type shit. If we can get some evidence to expose them, we can stop it before it gets worse.”

Peter stared at her. Of course, this would be their first date. He sighed, but behind the mask he was smiling. “Ok, hop on.”

MJ quickly jumped into his arms, wrapping her legs around his waist with a tight grip and her arms interlocking tightly behind his neck. She placed her head in the crook of his neck while Peter wrapped one arm easily around her hips. 

“Good to go?” he asked, shifting her weight without any difficulty. She nodded. And with that they were off. 

That was a few hours ago. They got into Oscorp without sounding off any alarms (thanks for the passwords, Ned). They got a few pictures and, God, Peter was so tempted to break them out right then and there, but they left silently. Or, well, they tried. Apparently the night guard was suspicious of the black shadows and came around to check things out. Peter and MJ were so close, just a flight away from the rooftop they came from. But once he heard the guard’s footsteps and Peter panicked. 

“MJ, we’re going to run,” Peter whispered, agitated. 

“What?”

“Hey, you!” the guard yelled and MJ’s eyes widened before Peter pulled her up the stairs, almost carrying her at some points. 

“Fuck,” Peter said, “hold on to me.”

“Shit,” she said, climbing onto him. “If I die, I’m haunting you first.”

MJ held onto Peter’s shoulders so tightly he thought his suit might rip. And that was honestly saying something given that this is grade A Stark tech on his body, so MJ’s grip was borderline Hulk-like. Within seconds, he swung up and out the rooftop. He hoped the guard didn’t see who it was who broke in. He didn’t need to hear JJ’s scathing comments on him being a menace to society again. 

Once they were ways away from Oscorp, Peter said, “Dramatic much?”

MJ laughed into his shoulder. “Take us home, Peter.”

Peter smiled. “Ok.”

okay but who’s who in the spiderman buddie au.

oh anon... you've just opened the biggest can of worms ever i'm so sorry for what's about to happen. this got. way too long so i'm putting this under a cut to save everyone but the TLDR is version is: eddie is peter parker/spider-man, buck is both johnny storm/the human torch and mary jane watson, shannon is gwen stacy rip. way too long explanation below if you care it's ok if u don't xoxo

first of all, i'm mostly going off of 616 comics spider-man & co just bc there's a Lot of it and i am deeply unwell. so. eddie is peter. eddie is also not peter, because i think 616 peter is like MUCH more aggressive and prone to violence than eddie would ever be. peter threw wolverine out of a window bc he vaguely insulted mary jane. eddie's foray into violence was demonstrably Wrong. peter being violent is like, a tuesday. however, there is a lot of overlap: they are both (sometimes over-)protective, they both have a very firm and clear sense of responsibility (again, sometimes to their detriment), they both put the weight of the world on their shoulders when no one asked (shannon's "bc eddie always know what's best for everyone, god forbid you stop for a second and actually ask them what they need" v peter core), they will both fight until the bitter end to make it back to their family, neither of them can hold off on being a little bit of a bitch sometimes, etc etc. two pieces of canonical pieces of evidence to support this that no one asked for: first, peter being an asshole about psychics (peter, you. literally have superpowers) and "he's never going to stop trying" yeah <3 ... Yeah <3

now. buck. now here's the thing, literally the first thing i thought when i first heard buck say, "as far as i'm concerned the world began when i was born," in s1e1 was, "wow johnny storm core." buck is very deeply johnny like, beat for beat, buck (and especially s1 buck) is johnny storm. surface level whore who really just wants a family above all else? hot tempered one second, crazy empathetic the next? raised and loved by his older sister more than anyone else in the world? surrounded by family and "meaningful relationships" but still feeling alone most of the time? clinging to romantic relationships that don't work, or are straight up bad for him? buck is quite literally johnny's tethered. johnny textually calling himself expendable and i'm supposed to be normal ok:

johnny and peter's comic relationship too -- starting off at each other's throats, eventually becoming best friends, johnny quite literally putting peter in his will, etc etc -- has a Lot of buddie hallmarks too.

buck also has BIG mary jane energy, which makes sense because johnny and mj are pretty similar as it is. (also. to be on my gwenmj shit for a second, buddie big gwenmj energy with mj talking about gwen: "she did her best to make [us best friends], even when i kept her at arms length, the way i did with everyone. she saw through the party girl mask i always wore, saw the frightened, abused kid inside.")

so i guess, to stop nerding out about spider-man for ten seconds and actually answer your question, in my image of a buddie spider-man au, eddie is spider-man no doubt. but there's So many different directions it could go for buck (peter biggest whore in all of comics fr) (the peterfel hero vs cat burglar angle would be delicious. the petermj soulmates angle -- one more day au where married buddie has their marriage and future daughter erased from the timeline absolutely delicious. the petergwen secret identity to Tragic End angle, peterjohnny rivals to besties angle. it's all delicious) BUT i think if i were to sit down and really write one, i would go with the buck as both johnny and mary jane. i'm not sure if i would go with buddie both being superheroes, eddie with a secret identity, buck as a pseudo-celebrity, or with eddie secret identity superhero and buck as a Normal Person (buck knowing eddie's spider-man p much the whole time just like mary jane did so real and so true). either way, shannon for sure as gwen, eddie's first love who he couldn't save. buck as both johnny (peter talking to gwen's grave: "but when i'm around johnny storm i can hear myself cracking wise again") and mary jane (staying with peter after gwen dies even when he tries to push her away) in the aftermath of everything.

honestly, the two things keeping me from a spider-man au the most are a) superhero aus require Plot and i am so bad at coming up with Plots and b) i would be so tempted to just. straight up copy the comics and swap out the names. the negative zone arc, with buck "dying" only to be (mostly) alive in the negative zone where he's forced to fight in gladiator style competitions, dying over and over again for two years (but only ~3 months for eddie & co)? the first person buck sees when he manages to get out of the negative zone being eddie? or, uncanny avengers #20, buck being possessed by the red skull, who tortures eddie by threatening to kill buck in front of him? or, post civil war eddie having the knowledge of his secret identity wiped from everyone's memories, only for buck to Know there's something wrong? they're all so buddie coded right out of the box.

ANYWAY god sorry i've never shut up a day in my life! y'all can't ask me about spider-man unless you're prepared for me to be the most annoying person alive god bless

if you ever have the time i recommend a movie called little fish (2021) it’s not at all popular but it’s honestly such a beautiful film (imo) it essentially follows a young married couple, where this illness is spreading like all around the world where people are losing their memories, some are slow, some all at once.

the main couple, the guy begins to lose his memories and it’s just showing their life together from when they met as the movie goes on, im sorry for rambling but ugh the petermj vibes i get from the couple is just *chefs kiss*

“Hey Peter! Peter! P- Peter? Earth to Peter? Helloooooooo.”

Peter shakes his head out of the clouds he’s currently in, “Hm?”

And next to him is his best friend Ned, of course, shaking his own head at him with a smile. “There you are, man. Did you even hear what I said?”

Lying isn’t really an option with the other boy, given they know each other better than they know themselves, at this point. Also, he’s being pretty obvious. Damn.

“I didn’t,” Peter answers, scratching his neck in embarrassment, “Sorry.”

Ned just seems to find it funny, thank God. It’s fine. He just can’t be so distracted, they need to stay up tonight to get tickets for next year’s Comic Con, and he can’t mess up his Stark internship, and Spider-Man. Except that letter-

“What’s that?” Ned interrupts his train of thought, and he blinks a couple of times while processing the question, then chuckles, feeling even more embarrassed than before.

And he looks at the paper in his hand for a moment. Because, well, that’s the question, really.

Peter opened his locker this morning to this letter slipping out onto the floor, and naturally, this made him more than a little confused.

He only saw it when he put his bag down, and then picked up the envelope, examining it closer. It’s pretty much a plain white envelope you could buy basically anywhere, no recipient or sender name or anything. First he thought it could be a prank, but Flash doesn’t really do pranks, per say, he just calls people names and films them for his livestreams.

And despite already being late to chemistry, curiosity took over Peter. So he opened it. Inside, he unfolded a piece of paper to reveal a letter. A love letter. A typewritten one, at that.
