FOTD #093 : psathyrella aquatica!

p. aquatica is the only known aquatic gilled fungus, & falls part of the family psathyrellaceae :-) it has so far been found in oregon, the US. it grows from water-logged wood, silt & gravel ; it usually fruits about a metre under the water's surface.

the big question : can i bite it?? although the edibility for humans has not yet been studied, it is thought to be a food source for small river insects !!

p. aquatica description :

"the fruiting body consists of a small convex cap & a long stipe. its cap is brown, convex, & has gills underneath. the young mushroom develops a veil, which is lost as the mushroom grows to maturity. the mushroom's stipe appears to be quite strong, & is anchored up to 1.6 feet (0.5 m) deep in sediment, in order to stand up to the fast-moving river currents where it is primarily found. the stipe is covered in thin hair like structures."

Two prominent local historians are raising an alarm about the dwindling number of village shops on the island which they blamed partly on modernisation which has seen larger establishments, including gas station convenience stores, taking over. Professor Emeritus Sir Henry Fraser raised the issue on Friday as he presented the Barbados Rum Experience lecture at the Radisson Aquatica Resort, during which he spoke about some of the historic relations between Barbados and the Carolinas and the role rum played, as well as the relationship between locals and rum. “Rum shops in Barbados have dwindled dramatically because a rum shop was tied to the village shop, and the village shops have been eroded, shut down, displaced by the big powerful class of petrol sellers,” Sir Henry said. “Every petrol station now has a mini-mart and the mini-mart prices, like the village shops, are more expensive than in the supermarkets but they are awfully convenient, and since Barbadians have far more cars than we should have or we need, it is relatively easy for people to use a car and drop into the mini-mart when they get their petrol and the village shops have all disappeared.” Sir Henry said he was not aware of any research being done on the issue and promised to put forward the idea to the Department of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. He said abandoned village shops could be seen all across Barbados and he suggested that the younger generation was not interested in carrying on the tradition. “In almost every village in Barbados, of any size, you will find an abandoned village shop. Some of them are elegant two-storey buildings which have gone to ruin because Daddy and Mummy have died and they made enough money that young Jack went to medical school [or] law school and there is nobody to carry on the family business. So, there are derelict village shops all over Barbados,” said Sir Henry.
