I went to Indianapolis last week and brought these three Baker paintings home with me. I’m a sucker for Indiana impressionists.
George Herbert Baker (February 14, 1878 – March 11, 1943) was an American Impressionist artist who worked primarily in the Richmond, Indiana area and was a member of the "Richmond Group" of painters. He worked in oil, watercolor and pastels. He worked for a time in Brown County, Indiana and is sometimes associated with that group of artists.
Born in Muncie, Indiana, Baker lived in Richmond and Centerville most of his life. He studied with John Elwood Bundy, at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Boothbay Art School. In 1925 he was a visiting instructor at Miami University.
His work is represented in the collections of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art, Richmond Art Museum, Earlham College, Miami University Art Museum, Morrisson-Reeves Library, Centerville, Indiana Library and a devoted group of private collectors. A painting titled "November Meadows" painted during the time he was an instructor at Miami University hangs today over the mantle in the formal living room of the Miami president's home, Lewis Place. Wiki
George Baker (1878-1943) was born in Muncie, Indiana and moved to Richmond, Indiana in his early teens. Considered a brilliant colorist, Baker demonstrated artistic ability early in his life. This interest in drawing landed him a job at the Gaar-Scott Company where like Charles Conner; he painted scenes on farm equipment. The farm equipment could be decorated with anything from pinstripes to completed landscapes. It was Mr. Scott who introduced Baker to the dean of the Richmond Group, John Bundy. In addition to art instruction with Bundy, Baker studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and at the Boothbay Art School, Maine.
Baker was a charter member of the Richmond Palette club, serving as the president of the organization. His was known for his landscapes of all seasons and moods, painting nature around Wayne County. His daring use of bold color led to rumors of alcoholism, yet these cannot be confirmed. When asked about his use of color Baker responded, “I don’t paint nature the way it is. I paint nature the way I wish it was.” Considered to be one of the finest landscape painters in Indiana, Baker was invited to serve as a visiting instructor for two semesters at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1925.
Later in his career he worked in pastel and depicted marine scenes. Baker painted on the New England coast and in the mountains during the summer of 1931. In that same year, sixty oil paintings of Marine scenes and pastels were placed on display in the Westcott Hotel. He exhibited in Cincinnati, New York, Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis and various cities throughout Indiana and Ohio winning numerous awards including the Howard Spaulding Jr. prize of $100 at the Hoosier Salon Exhibition, Nye Prize, 1930 and the Muncie Prize in 1910. Baker was a prominent local artist of his time and influenced many Hoosier artists. Artists that studied with Baker include Harry Townsend, Zeb E. Pottenger, Lawrence McConaha and Howard Leigh. 𝐍𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐫- 𝐄𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞
Eddie Munson x Female Reader
Part 1
𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: None :)
𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: You had just moved into Hawkins by yourself. It just so happened that you had the noisiest neighbor!
𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭: 1,133
Tumblr media
Moving into your new trailer home was a process. Not only were you living alone, but you packed up and moved everything on your own. Your parents were tired of the person you were becoming. Well, at least that’s what they like to say. In reality, you just struggled through senior year, and they didn’t understand why it was so hard for you. So, instead of being parents and taking their time to understand, they cast you out like you were nothing. The stress was behind you now that you moved out on your own. Your trailer wasn’t perfect, but it was yours. Finally, something you did on your own.
It was a nice, relaxing Sunday. Well, you were trying hard for it to be. You were starting your new school tomorrow and were nervous since you assumed you’d be the only 19-year-old senior there. So, taking a chill day was necessary before walking into another hard senior year.
You set up your tv, moved all of your little boxes filled with your most prized items (mainly art supplies since you were an aspiring artist), and sat down on the little couch inside of your trailer. “Ahh, Miami Vice” You thought. There was nothing better than unwinding and watching detective Sonny Crockett on your screen. Before Sonny could get his words out, you heard a loud guitar sound coming from next door. It was so loud you couldn’t hear anything. Without any thought, you got up and walked right out of your trailer. You made a beeline straight for where the noise was coming from. Immediately, you pounded on the door. You weren’t even sure if they would hear you over the loudness of their guitar.
You found yourself getting lost in the music for a slight second, picking up on the melody they were playing. Did you actually think your noisy neighbor was actually good at playing? You laughed at yourself. It was so on-brand for you to react in the moment rather than taking a moment to calm down. Instantly, you regretted even knocking on the door. You turned your back to the door, starting to walk back to your trailer. Just then, you heard the guitar stop. You could feel the heat rush to your cheeks; shit, did they hear you knock? Your first instinct was to run. So, that’s exactly what you did.
“Hey!” You heard a voice call. It was a pleasant-sounding voice.
You were just about to open the door for your trailer, but of course, with your luck, you got caught.
“I saw you through the window, neighbor. I know it was you who knocked. Did you need anything?” He asked.
Your shoulders dropped as you took a deep breath. You turned your body toward the man, feeling embarrassed now. To your surprise, he was handsome, and he looked around your age. As he saw your face, he flashed a smile at you. You eyed him up and down before flashing a smile back. He looked tough, but his big smile softened his face. While you were still embarrassed, you eased up and snapped back into reality. “Oh nothing, I just wanted to tell you that what you were playing sounded good. You have a good taste in music.” You quickly tried to make a comeback from almost ruining his first impression of you.
“Is that all? That knock didn’t sound promising.” He replied, smirking as if he knew why you really knocked.
“Yeah, wasn’t sure if you were going to hear me over the Metallica. Maybe I also had a few pointers on how to sharpen up your chord changes?” You teased, laughing at yourself. What a nerd. Your neighbor was already getting you to feel butterflies. He gave you a shocked face, motioning for you to come over. “So why don’t you come to show me how to do it? You play?” He invited. You nodded. At first, you were nervous to take him up on his offer, but it's like your body moved before your brain could think of any reasons why you shouldn’t.
“Actually, no. I was just joking. I’m more of a painter.” You said, finally making it to his trailer.
He extended his arm, motioning for you to come in the trailer. He watched as you walked into his trailer. He closed the door behind you. “Should I regret inviting a stranger into my house?” He joked, “The name is Eddie and yours?” You took a quick glance around his trailer before turning back to look at him.  “Y/N, and I don’t know, should I regret coming into a stranger's home?” You shot back at him.
“Well, we aren’t strangers anymore, are we, Y/N?” he laughed. “See, we’re already on a first name basis.”
You laughed, still not getting over his infectious smile. Ugh, here you go, already falling for your neighbor. The first person you met in Hawkins, and you already got yourself a crush. “So, Y/N, where did you come from? And please, have a seat.” He said, making you feel comfortable. If only making friends were this easy back at home. Well, I guess this is your new home. “California.” You said, sighing at the thought of you really being on your own. “So, what really brings you here and I assume you're alone? I mean, if you weren’t, it would be your parents knocking on my door for sure.” He chuckled. You felt apprehensive to tell him the real reason you came to Hawkins; you were a failure. Before you could speak a lie, the truth came out.
“Parents kicked me out. I guess I wasn’t living up to their expectations. A 19-year-old high schooler is not what they wanted for a child. So, I wanted to get further away from them. What better way than to come to a town they have never heard of.” You laughed before continuing, “I was lucky that I saved the money I had from working my part-time job. I had enough to buy myself a trailer home. So, I bought it and road tripped here.” You smiled. It felt good to not lie to someone for once. While you feared his reaction, you also felt like a weight was lifted off your shoulders.
“You’re not a failure. This will be our year.” He said. You were confused for a moment, but before you could ask anything, he cut you off and explained. “I’m also still in high school.” He smiled at the fact that he was no longer alone. You smiled back, feeling seen for once in your life. Someone understood you and finally, there was no judgment. I guess for once, your reacting in the heat of the moment led you somewhere great…
