Your Guide to Top-Tier Impact Windows & Doors for Florida Homes
Living in Florida means embracing stunning sunsets, vibrant coral reefs, and the occasional tropical storm. While the beauty is undeniable, hurricane season brings a different kind of excitement — one that requires preparation and resilience. For Florida homeowners, impact windows and doors aren’t just an upgrade; they’re an investment in peace of mind and property protection.
What are Impact Doors and Windows and Why Do They Matter in Florida?
Imagine windows and doors can withstand winds exceeding 200 mph and projectiles hurled by hurricanes. That’s the power of impact windows and doors. Constructed with laminated glass and reinforced frames, they’re built to deflect debris, resist shattering, and stay intact even in the face of extreme weather.
Beyond hurricane protection, impact windows and doors offer a multitude of benefits:
Enhanced security: The sturdy construction deters break-ins and provides an extra layer of protection against intruders.
Noise reduction: The thicker glass effectively blocks out unwanted noise, creating a more peaceful haven within your home.
Energy efficiency: Many impact windows come with specialized coatings or laminated glass that helps regulate temperature, reducing energy bills and reliance on air conditioning.
Increased home value: Properties with impact windows and doors are often more attractive to potential buyers, boosting resale value.
Tumblr media
With any significant investment, concerns might arise. Here are some common misconceptions about impact windows and doors and why they shouldn’t deter you:
Myth: Impact windows are unattractive and block natural light. Fact: Modern impact windows come in various styles and finishes, seamlessly blending with your home’s aesthetic. Their clear, laminated glass allows ample natural light to flow in.
Myth: They’re difficult to open and close. Fact: Today’s impact windows operate smoothly and easily, just like traditional windows.
Myth: They’re too expensive. Fact: While the initial cost is higher than regular windows, the long-term benefits in terms of storm protection, energy savings, and security can outweigh the initial investment. Consider it an investment in your home’s safety and value.
Keeping Your Guard Up: Inspecting Impact Windows and Doors for Damage
Even the most robust windows need occasional TLC. Regularly inspecting your impact windows and doors for damage is crucial to ensure their functionality and protection. Here’s what to look for:
Cracks or chips in the glass: While impact-resistant, even these windows can suffer damage from severe impacts.
Loose or damaged frames: Check for gaps or cracks around the frame, especially after a storm.
Deterioration of weatherstripping: Worn-out seals can compromise energy efficiency and allow water infiltration.
Hardware issues: Ensure locks, handles, and hinges are functioning smoothly and securely.
If you notice any damage, schedule a professional inspection and repair immediately. Remember, timely maintenance keeps your impact windows and doors performing at their peak.
Eco-Conscious Comfort: The Environmental Benefits of Impact Windows and Doors
Beyond safeguarding your home, impact windows and doors contribute to a greener future. Here’s how:
Reduced energy consumption: Their insulating properties help maintain consistent temperatures, lowering reliance on HVAC systems and reducing energy bills.
Enhanced hurricane resilience: By minimizing storm damage, you’ll prevent debris from polluting waterways and landfills.
Durable and long-lasting: Impact windows have a lifespan considerably longer than regular windows, reducing manufacturing waste and resource consumption associated with frequent replacements.
Investing in impact windows and doors is a conscious choice, benefiting both your home and the environment.
Style Meets Strength: Popular Window and Door Styles for Florida Homes
With the need for protection comes the desire for aesthetics. Thankfully, a variety of stylish impact window and door options cater to diverse Florida home styles:
Coastal Chic: Opt for hurricane-rated French doors leading out to your patio, embracing the indoor-outdoor living Florida is known for.
Modern Minimalism: Sleek aluminum frame windows with expansive views complement the clean lines of contemporary architecture.
Mediterranean Flair: Arched impact windows and wrought iron door accents add a touch of Old World charm to your Spanish-inspired home.
Traditional Elegance: Classic double-hung impact windows with white frames maintain the timeless beauty of your historic bungalow.

Like Blood on Iron | Part 7
Tumblr media
Historical Executioner AU Summary: The executioner has always been an enigma to you - drawing you in. His sword drawing a line in the dirt as he made his way to the village center, and leaving back to his cottage on the outskirts of town. However, your curiosity can't stop the future your family has planned for you.
A/N: Two in a week? Who am I? I wrote most of this today, and should have just waited until my regularly scheduled days to post, but I couldn't.
If you like this fic, consider sending a dollar on ko-fi.
Tumblr media
You would recognize his silhouette in a hurricane. Wet hair plastered to your forehead and rain dripping in your eyes doesn't disturb the image of him waiting for you down the now mud swamped road. You push your hood off of your head, trying to let him know to come to you, to come speak to you, but instead he turns and disappears into the narrow alleys between the small shops and houses.
You should go inside; you can tell from the twitch of the curtains that someone is watching you - watched Jonathan kiss you on the cheek and walk off. You know whoever it is: Mother, Father, Maggie - they're waiting for you to come inside from the stinking rain that's pelting your skin. They're crowded around the window wondering why you won't move.
You run after him, slipping and sliding in the mud that clings to your skin and coats you in a thin sheen. You can barely make out the edge of his cloak whipping around corners in a seemingly nonsense pattern, always too far away from you for you to catch up. It's not until you emerge at the edge of the village, overlooking the cove that you realize where he's gone.
You slide down the rocks, scraping your shins, your palms, the back of your thighs against the rough rocks as the rain makes them too slick to catch a grip on. Blood mixing with the rain and the mud, you crash into the sand, dress torn to shreds. Just another to end up shoved in the back of the closet where questions can't reach it.
Simon's a black mass against the dark sand, a tornado in his own right as the wind pulls his cloak away from his body, whipping it into terrifying shapes - the monster the rest of the village thinks he is. The mask is gone, for the first time you see him bare outside of the safety of his own home. The cross scar shines pale against the rest of his skin, the moon still bright enough through the clouds to illuminate him.
"Simon!" Your voice is carried away from you by the wind. You don't know if he hears you or knows that you'd follow as he turns toward you.
He doesn't reach out to you, the reflex you've gotten so used to him showing around you as you come to a stop beside him, your own cloak pulling painfully against you in the wind.
"Shouldn't you be inside?"
He speaks so low you're not sure if you actually hear him.
"What?"
"You don't need to be out here in this; you're getting married soon. You don't want to be sick."
His words are like a kick in the stomach - not just the what he's said, but the way he speaks to you. Even from the first time here on the beach, he'd never spoken so flat - so empty to you. There had always been something so uniquely Simon in his voice. But now - this is how he must speak to those knelt down in front of him, waiting for his sword to swing. How he must have sounded to Uncle Henry when he knelt down to whisper to him.
"Simon it wasn't - it was just a kiss on the cheek. It wasn't anything important."
"It should have been more."
The feeling of it all: his words, the cloak tugging at your neck, the rain and mud sticking to your skin, the burning in your palms, it's too much.
"What did you say?"
Simon doesn't look at you as he speaks, his hands held tightly behind his back, eyes watching the waves that crash heavy on the horizon.
"He's going to be your husband. You should have been sneaking off with him - you should have followed him. It's the right thing."
His skin is ice cold where you grab him on the arm, none of his usual warmth bleeding through the dark fabric of his shirt.
"Simon, please don't say that. I don't want -"
"Go home."
"No."
Simon doesn't shake your arm free, doesn't shove you away, but he might as well with the look in his eyes when he finally looks at you. Bright eyes unusually dark, the circles underneath them nearly black.
"Why do you keep coming back? There is so much more for you elsewhere."
You can't breathe, you have to clutch his arm to keep yourself grounded or you think you might let the rain wash you out into the sea. He grabs you, hands warm while the rest of him is freezing.
"We can dream all we want, but I've got nothing for you but a shack in the woods and a life full of being shunned."
"Better that with you than anything with anyone else."
He's heaving beneath your touch, trying to keep himself from unraveling everything that he's packed so small inside. He doesn't want to speak what he's thinking of: you can see it written in the corners of his eyes, in the wrinkles of worry you're not sure you've ever seen before.
"You say that now. But what about when you want a family?" His voice is pained at the thought.
"You are my family."
"This life isn't enough for you, even if you refuse to see it yourself," his grip on you turns bruising - harder than he's ever held you, even when you begged for harder. "I will not be responsible for seeing you suffer in the coming years because you thought you loved me. You told me you wanted to leave and travel - I can't do that with you here."
"I do love you."
You're begging; you will get on your knees to beg if it makes him stop talking to you like this, to stop holding you like he's never going to get the chance to do it ever again. But there's iron in his eyes, and your blood on his skin, and you know that this is it.
He doesn't have to tell you he loves you - not like when he whispered it into your skin or when he would braid your hair into tangles in the early mornings. It rolls off of him as he pushes you back, mouth capturing yours. He tastes like the rain and something bitter, something you've never tasted on him before.
You trip over a divot in the sand, but Simon catches you, pulling you up so that your legs wrap around his waist. He walks the two of you back until you're sheltered by the rocks that form the ledge above.
The rocks dig into your back, but you don't feel them as Simon hitches up your skirts around you. This time it's different - there is no gentleness in the way he takes you; not like all the other times before. The rain covers the two of you, and you know this is the last time. The last time you'll taste him or feel the thick calluses of his fingers on the back of your thigh.
And when the two of you cross the ending together, he doesn't pull out to spill himself anywhere but inside of you. He pushes you harder against the rocks, keeping himself buried inside of you until he can't stay any longer.
You can feel the scratches on your back stinging from the rain, and you hope they never stop - one of the last reminders of Simon you know you're ever going to get.
He doesn't kiss you when he settles you onto the ground, doesn't kiss you as he straightens the tattered and torn edges of your skirt back down, fingers chaste against the soaked and ruined fabric. He doesn't speak as he holds your face in his hands, thumbs brushing the water from your cheeks and you don't know if it's rain or tears, but you're sure he does.
You don't know if it's the rain or the sorrow that stops your feet from working, but Simon, strong as he always has been, carries you home on his back - a caricature of all the times you've been in his arms before. His boot kicking against the front door is thunderous on the darkened street.
Father doesn't ask what's happened when he swings the door open and finds Simon sliding you off of his shoulders; he doesn't ask why your knees buckle or why Mother rushes forward to grab you from Simon, her own hand lingers on Simon's a moment to long before Father whispers a 'thank you' and let's the door slam shut.
You know by the way her hands cradle you that Mother knows what happened out there in the storm. She doesn't let Father touch you, instead pushing him away and calling for Maggie to help carry you up the stairs. Your mother, always so fastidious about cleanliness and the whiteness of the linens, strips you down to your underdress and tucks you into bed, mud and all, burrowing herself beside you, fingers doing their best to push away the fever that threatens to build at your temple.
"I'm sorry."
I'm sorry.
Tumblr media
You're sick for two weeks, fever burning through your skin. You think at times that the blankets around you must be turning into ash. The people beside your bed flicker in and out: Maggie rearranging the sheets around you, Lily pressing a cold washcloth to your forehead. Jonathan reading something in a book to you, his voice rumbling through the house.
Mother bathing you gently, fingers brushing through your hair, working the tangles out with a comb.
It's Jonathan at your side when you wake, a book in his hands and his boots tapping heavily on the floor beneath him. The sound shoots straight through your skull.
"Will you stop that?"
His hand probes at your temple, fingers taking your temperature. You don't even have it in you to push him off, to tell him to go away. The chair someone placed beside your bed creaks under his weight as he slips off of it, book landing heavily on the floor. He drops to his knees beside you so, eyes scanning your face for any sign of the fever coming back.
"How'd you feel?"
He speaks to you like you're a wounded animal, soft and low. Like you'll run at any moment. but there's nowhere to run this time.
"Like I was trampled by a horse."
His chuckle, just a short breath from his nose, washes over the ache in your muscles.
"I thought you were when I saw you laying here the first time."
He slides his hand beneath the blankets to grab yours, and you let him, welcoming the warmth and roughness against your still frozen skin.
"Did I sleep through our wedding?"
"Unfortunately not. There's still six days for you to be rid of me."
You can't help the hot tears that start to flow from you - Jonathan doesn't ask why as he brushes them away, pulling himself into bed beside you and letting you turn the front of his shirt dark with your own tears.
"I know love. I'm sorry."
But his warmth isn't enough - isn't a replacement for what you're wishing for.
Tumblr media
The dress is beautiful, you think as Maggie's fingers lace the back up gently. In the three weeks you were sick you'd lost so much weight that the stays have to be pulled tighter to form the fabric around yourself than originally intended. You want to apologize to her; this should have been her dress - she is the one who wants to get married. The weight of your disappointment grows heavier as Lily works around Maggie, her fingers pinning your hair up deftly with Grandma's pins.
You don't recognize yourself when they step away; the white of the dress sparkling back at you in the wavy mirror, blurring your features as you furiously try to blink back the tears that threaten to ruin the entire thing.
Jonathan had been there every day you'd been sick, but it wasn't the same. You'd wanted to ask him if the dark shroud was outside, if he was there at all. But you couldn't do it. Couldn't bring yourself to know if he wasn't there.
"It's going to be alright," Maggie soothes, fingers running down the fabric of your shoulders. "And you'll still be close - Jonathan asked Father if Lily and I could come stay with you for a while after the two of you return from your trip."
"I'm not sure my husband would appreciate sharing a bed with the three of us."
Maggie's distorted reflection smiles weakly at you in the mirror; you clasp her hand tightly, hoping the sweat doesn't stain the delicate white fabric.
A heavy knock reverberates through the house - you feel it shake the floorboards beneath you.
"I'll get it," Lily says, slipping out of the door, heavy dress swishing around her ankles. You think of her asking you to tighten her dress, of the way she'd smiled at the boy in the market. Soon you'll be getting her ready for her own wedding, and you wonder if she'll consider it a death sentence like you or look forward to it like Maggie.
Her voice is muffled; you try to focus on it as Maggie ducks beneath your bilious skirts to help you slide your shoes on. You teeter on one foot, and she grabs your calf to try to help you from falling. Lily's feet patter up the steps, and she trips through the door, skirt catching on a snag on the floor.
"There's-" she's breathless from rushing up the stairs, "there's someone here to see you."
You know who it is by the way she stumbles over the word 'somebody'.
Maggie's warm hand finishes the lacing on your shoe before she emerges from the cloud of skirts around you, hair disheveled. Lily's still staring at you, the thread of her dress connecting her to the floor, to the house you once so desperately tried to escape from.
Your heart squeezes in your chest; you grip the lace at your wrist hard enough you can feel some of the threads snapping.
You know it's a horrible idea: to see him now. But you push past Maggie and Lilly, tripping on the skirt as you do your best to keep your balance flying down their stairs. The feeling of him courses through your veins as your feet hit the main landing; but the entryway is empty. Your stomach sinks; he must have left, must have -
"You look beautiful."
Simon stares at you from the kitchen doorway; hands clasped behind his back. He's devoid of his usual mask; pale skin exposed to the world. His eyes are dark, the skin around them gaunt and sleep deprived. You long to reach out and grab him, but you keep your hands to yourself. He looks so much like he did that night in the cove. The scratches against your back have healed up, but you can still feel them pulsing just below the surface.
"What are you doing here?" You ask, trying and failing to keep your voice steady.
"I wanted to see you again before I couldn't again."
A thousand wild thoughts course through you: this wouldn't have to end the two of you. You could still see each other, in secret; you would do anything to keep him, but you know what his answer to it would be. How he would shake his head, and tell you it's impossible.
And you know that, despite however you may feel, Jonathan doesn't deserve that level of cruelty, not after nursing you back to life for the past three weeks, not after kneeling at your bedside and brushing away tears he knew didn't belong to him.
"Why today? You could have come to see me days ago."
"I wanted a glimpse into a different life."
It's not sadness that flows through you; the fever burnt that out of you weeks ago. Now it's anger like you've never felt: the anger that you know takes over Mother when she smashes things against the wall in her and Father's room. The anger that takes her over when she makes the walls rattle in her wake.
"This is cruel, and you know it."
Simon has the good graces to not meet your eyes as he shifts, boots covered in a thick layer of dust.
"I know."
"I thought you wanted me to forget you."
In the distance the church bell tolls, timing the hour. The minutes to your wedding tick down, waiting for the sun to fully set before Father comes to get you to escort you there. And Simon in front of you wears down whatever resolve that you had to get yourself there.
"I think I'm too selfish for that."
"I wish you were."
He chews on the inside of his cheek, and you know if you were to kiss him right now, you'd taste the iron of his blood.
"I would still run away with you, if you asked right now."
"We've got nowhere to run to."
"That doesn't bother me."
A sharp staccato of a knock on the door breaks the spell between the two of you. You linger, waiting for Simon to say something else, but the knocking increases, pulling you away from him.
Tumblr media
Simon takes advantage of you walking away to try to slip out the backdoor. The small courtyard is covered in leaves, they crunch heavily beneath his booted feet. The sound of the door opening back up behind him pulls his attention away from the path home.
He doesn't turn to look back, but he cowardly hopes it's your voice that calls out to him from the doorway. But it's not.
"You're just going to run away? You're not even going to fight for her?"
Maggie stares at him from the shut doorway, all acerbic and sharp edges - the opposite of you. Simon feels like the look in eyes is enough to set him on fire from shame.
"She deserves better than me; better than a life on the run."
"Who are you to decide what my sister deserves?"
She walks quickly, heels sharp against the cobblestones. Simon thinks she's going to hit him. He would deserve it; he can tell by the way her fingers curl that it would hurt.
"My sister," Maggie says, nearly whispering at him in the biting air, "could do worse than Jonathan. I had to beg my father and mother to not marry her off to some of the men they had in mind. But she deserves more than just being someone's wife for the rest of her life."
She cuts Simon off sharply when he tries to speak.
"My sister would run to the farthest edges of the earth to be with you - to see the world with you."
She leaves him there, the wind cutting through him, slamming the door shut hard enough behind her to rattle the windows and the wood.

I'm having entirely too much fun designing a fake amusement park for a Changeling: the Dreaming campaign that I'll probably never get to run.
The rough idea is that in the window between Disneyland opening in California and Disneyworld in Florida, a couple of brothers with big dreams for the future of amusement parks tried to do their own thing in the Palm Beach County area (where I grew up, so I'm more familiar with the map), but the only people they could get to fund it were a Texas oil tycoon, and his wife who had ambitions in the burgeoning televangelist business, and those two insisted that the park have a Bible theme.
As usual, a giant wall of text after the cut.
It got built on a parcel of dredged out swampland, saw a trickle of interest, and eventually got shut down due to some tragic accidents (possibly caused by sabotage). There was definitely some kind of power struggle between the creators, the owners, the staff, and some outside forces. So now it's the mid 90's and this place has been sitting there for over 20 years getting reclaimed by the swamp, only getting visited by teenagers to leave graffiti and battered by the occasional hurricane. But the Changeling folk of the region know that something sinister is going on out there, because particularly weird and dangerous Chimera keep emerging from that part of the Everglades, and after a brief initial investigation they'll narrow down the search for the source to somewhere inside the park grounds.
As someone with complicated feelings about his own Christian upbringing, I'm trying to thread the needle here on making this place feel in poor taste but also feel like you could imagine why someone would have thought it was an appropriate devotional act, through a lens of too much money and too little sense. I don't want it to just be seething, caustic parody. That's too easy. I want it to look and feel like you can imagine someone building this and saying "This is good. We're doing the LORD's work here," without them being a complete foaming-at-the-mouth strawman.
Current planned attractions (names are placeholders):
THE BEGINNING: A roller coaster with a bunch of Creation of the World decorations. The most popular ride back when it was open, because the Bible elements were the least intrusive.
THE GARDEN: An Eden-themed food court area, overlooking a small zoo. The valuable animals were sold ages ago, but that doesn't stop rumors of an escaped tiger still alive in the swamp.
THE FLOOD: A riverboat ride that was built on the other side of the zoo so that Eden's animals could also be the Ark's animals.
THE TOWER: An incomplete attraction used as a storage silo, because someone was clever enough to say "Hey maybe... maybe we shouldn't re-build the Tower of Babel? How about we don't do that" once all the disasters started happening and people started getting superstitious about this place.
THE NATIVITY: A train ride that allegedly charts the course of the Wise Men on their search for the infant Christ, but it also includes a bunch of Western Christmas/Winter Festival crap that would have been totally out of place in Bethlehem.
THE CULMINATION: A "dark ride" that's the Big Money item in the park, full of top of the line animatronics (circa 1966) recreating events from the Last Supper up to the Resurrection. Log Flume style, because the worst thing I could think of was having the customary huge drop where your picture is taken while you're descending so they can sell you a souvenir photo, and placing it right after the scene at Golgotha. You know the one.
THE FABLES: So let's say you're a parent and you figure that your pre-schooler is probably not ready to see glitchy animatronics recreate the Crucifixion. Congratulations, you're officially Not The Worst Parent Ever! This part of the park is basically a big playground for little little kids, themed with explicitly Christian interpretations of Aesop's Fables. Big emphasis on the Fable of the Grasshopper and the Ants (with a whole cast of different ants with one personality trait each), who also roam the park as costumed mascots.
THE KINGDOM: The central structure in the park is a big white castle in terrible disrepair. It used to house a bunch of shops and an information kiosk, a luxury restaurant, and park offices upstairs. I may lift the floorplan for Cinderella's castle more or less exactly. This place was built in explicit response to Disneyland, after all. There is also a carousel in this area featuring biblically accurate angels, that is probably the most haunted thing in this whole place.
THE END: Another dark ride, this one themed around the Book of Revelation, and all the wildly apocryphal notions of the Rapture that have proliferated in the Evangelical world. The one ride that was intended to be a haunting nightmare vision, but comes across as kitschy and silly instead.
THE FRONTIER: The Texas oil tycoon who funded the whole thing insisted that there be an Old West Town. And then his wife insisted that it still be a Christian Old West Town, about how America is the New Chosen Land and the conquest of the continent was Ordained by God. I'm still figuring out the details. Treatment of indigenous people would be at best a token mention of benevolent missionaries bringing them into the fold, and ignore all the genocide.
THE LEGACY: A walking trail with dioramas about the journeys of Paul of Tarsus. If I cast aside my goal of presenting something authentic to the cultures and time period involved and decide to editorialize instead, it will probably be here. I have opinions about the writings of Paul, and the legitimacy thereof.
THE HEROES: A Hall-of-Presidents style animatronic theater experience featuring various prophets, apostles, and other notable figures giving brief summaries of their experience. Near the entrance, the most heavily vandalized structure in the park.
So this place would have been enough of a mindfuck when it was active, but now it's had a couple decades of getting battered by the elements and vandalized by local kids, and it's just a horrific mess. And the Changeling game would be about investigating the nightmare spirits emerging from the place, but also investigating the origins of the park in the nearby city, finding and interviewing people who were involved in its creation, hunting for blueprints in city archives to find secret passages/access tunnels that bypass some of the ruined bits, and trying to penetrate to whatever inner sanctum is churning out all these Nightmare Spirits.

Peace of Mind: For buyers, a thorough inspection provides peace of mind, knowing that they are making a well-informed decision about their investment.
Negotiation Tool: Inspection results can be used to negotiate repairs or a price reduction with the seller.
Future Planning: Sellers can use inspection results to address any issues before listing their property or to set a fair asking price.
Insurance and Lending: Some insurance providers and lenders may require a home inspection before providing coverage or approving a mortgage.
House Inspection in Palm Beach County
A "house inspection" in Palm Beach County is essentially the same as a home inspection. The terms are often used interchangeably, and both refer to the process of evaluating a residential property's condition.
If you are in Palm Beach County and need a reliable home inspection service, it's essential to hire a licensed and experienced professional who is familiar with the local housing market and any region-specific concerns, such as hurricane preparedness and environmental factors. By doing so, you can ensure that your property is thoroughly inspected, and any issues are properly identified and addressed.
In summary, whether you're buying or selling a home in Palm Beach County, investing in a home inspection service is a smart decision. It can provide peace of mind, protect your investment, and help you make informed choices in the real estate market. A "house inspection" or "home inspection" in Palm Beach County is an essential step in the home buying or selling process.

Today is 20 November, 2022.
The trio of us haven’t actually been staying on Night Island full time. A month or so back a horrifically large hurricane tore through Florida and our little Island. We’re incredibly lucky that our property didn’t sustain totaling damage but was battered nonetheless. All the business is lost and some structures still remain partially in the water. Trash is askew on most of the streets though now piled in high mounds. I’m still having difficulty finding the words to process how we’ll rebuild. It feels like a great organ has been cut from me. The Villa is livable, for us anyway. We can sleep where we find the most comfortable. Because the Villa was built up high, a lot of primary damage was avoided; only some flooding in our basement, which is unfortunately where me and Daniel slept. There is a lot of labor going back into the Island though and I truly believe sometimes nature gives us the blank slate we didn’t ask for. I’m not so concerned for my emotions about the Island. We are traveling back and forth to the mainland and when we can, we spend time here. On the mainland I’m surrounded by much more tragedy than my own. We’ve only fed sparingly on the locals as everyone’s focus is on their lives torn asunder. No, for myself I am not concerned at all. Me and Daniel spoke at length about what we wanted on the Island in future. Daniel calls it Night Island 2.0 and we’ll definitely have a record store again. Oh and a dispensary. “Give them their drugs,” he said with a laugh. “I know I would have loved that.” It’ll be lovely.
We had to evacuate first to the mainland then we traveled up to New York to stay at Trinity Gate there and struggled to get back as soon as we could. The first night was the three of us kicking out broken glass and torn walls. Why I need so many windows in my homes is a mystery. Consider me a slave to the moon and the stars. As wee were assessing the damage, I picked up some books and started moving them to a pile then heard Benji calling to me from the living room.
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” He said as I approached, his face sinking and turning. Behind him, belly up like some stinking, glossy beached whale was my beloved 1981 custom Italian white leather sofa. It was specifically designed for the Villa and one of my most prized pieces of furniture. The entire room’s decor had not been touched since we first moved in and I cherished it so deeply and so fondly. Daniel’s sudden howl broke my daze as I was staring at the broken thing. He laughed and laughed as he walked to it and with Benji, tipped it back onto it’s feet as water and debris gushed forward like entrails from this slain creature. The entire room was a mess but the sofa stood upright now, flayed like a martyr to what our Villa once was.
“Oh my God, Boss, it’s fucking dead!” Daniel bellowed, still laughing, ironically echoing what I might have been thinking. Benji looked up at Daniel a bit confused by his rejoicing but Daniel was plainly remembering a rather charged argument we had over this furniture. Again, it was custom and took a great deal of designing to match the vision I had for this space. It was my seat and I was very proud of it. I tore the damaged fabric up to reveal it’s metal springs and soaked wood. Daniel was reciting a lot of stories involving the item to Benji as I couldn’t help but inspect it further. Daniel burnt the sofa with cigarette about six months after we installed it and the wetness in the wood unleashed a vile smell of stale tobacco. He also vomited on it once and plenty more times he was close to doing it again. So, I screamed at him so loud that he didn’t sit in it for the rest of that summer. I really didn’t mean to scare him but ever since then Daniel had become completely invested in hating it. And now my fledgeling finally won. Something plastic and bright pink caught my eye so I reached for it and held it in my palm. Daniel snatched it from me the moment I registered what is was.
“Holy shit. I remember this.” He was in disbelief. The object was a little pink lighter with Miami 1982 printed in white below a palm tree motif.
“Oh.” I responded, remembering. “You had bought that before we got back on the charter to the Island. You lost your previous one and went into the Seven-Eleven to buy a new one.”
“Aah, a relic!” Benji took it from Daniel and really thoroughly examined it. “Put on E-Bay for a million dollars!”
Daniel laughed.
“That fucking couch swallowed my lighter. Do you know how pissed I was when I lost it after taking an hour and a half nap?” He took the lighter again, waved it at me and put it in his pocket. “It’s good luck from now on.”
Daniel was looking outside at the total, silent darkness. At once I was thrown back to a memory. Maybe not a complete memory, but the emotion was there and I wanted so badly for this moment to be from decades ago. Daniel would be staring past the open windows at the flashing neon below him then out at the moon above the sea. His face would be unshaven, his eyes stale, his hair blowing wildly over his forehead. And he would light a cigarette and say the probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, so stupid I’d marvel at the sheer wit of it. Then Daniel would ask me to join him in the shower and he’d promise he’d focus on staying. I wish I could show this image in my mind to him but I couldn’t and that realization is what destroyed the bond I had with Daniel in his mortal life and for decades I couldn’t stand to look at him in the Blood. I’m a monster of the highest caliber but please understand that a near constant mental link existed between Daniel and I before I gave him the Gift. But Daniel right now is all I can think about. Back in the present, he kicked some glass over the edge of the room out into the palm trees below, studying the little bit of outside before moving back toward the center of the room. I reflected that my life had always been a series of endings. There are always chapters closing at an alarming rate, almost faster than I can plan for them and once again I stood in the center of vacant palace. In these moments a small thought always occurs to me, that there’s at least one person I could go to for help but it’s a thought that’s never lead me anywhere good. Daniel’s arm came around my shoulders… I really I feel like he could sense why I was so speechless. He was looking at my face and my eyes met his.
“Ah, don’t worry about this,” he said so very casually, scanning the room again and then he smiled at me. Since that night a lot of the Villa has been cleared out and has become much more comfortable again. I want to continue to exist here.

Whats the Difference? Hollywood Life
Image Credit: Getty Images As Florida expects major destruction in the wake of Hurricane Helene‘s imminent path, some were issued a tornado watch and even a tornado warning. But how do the two alerts differentiate? What Is a Tornado Watch? According to the National Weather Service, a tornado watch encourages all residents in one area to prepare for a possible tornado. The NWS’ description of the alert reads, “Tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Review and discuss your emergency plans, take inventory of your supplies and check your safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching. Acting early helps to save lives! Watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center for counties where tornadoes may occur. The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.” Tornado Watch has been issued from parts of the FL West Coast to East Coast from Miami to Tampa to Orlando and Daytona Beach till 8 pm this evening @WPTV #tornado #hurricaneHelene #Florida pic.twitter.com/EFGqdYkXNu — Jennifer Correa (@JenniferWXwoman) September 26, 2024 What Is a Tornado Warning? Per the NWS, a warning is when a tornado “has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.” “There is imminent danger to life and property,” the site’s alert reads. “Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home, a vehicle, or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. Warnings are issued by your local forecast office. Warnings typically encompass a much smaller area (around the size of a city or small county) that may be impacted by a tornado identified by a forecaster on radar or by a trained spotter/law enforcement who is watching the storm.” Did Hurricane Helene Cause a Tornado? Since Hurricane Helene has not made landfall in Florida yet, the storm has not caused a tornado. However, the NWS issued a statewide tornado watch from the southern tip toward the northern part of Florida. Counties that were issued the watch include Brevard, Broward, Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Levy, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota and several more. According to the Florida Times-Union, the tornado watch for these counties takes effect until 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 26. Source link via The Novum Times

Intense rainfall and 'potentially life-threatening flooding' have struck South Florida, leading the governor to issue an emergency declaration.
Numerous communities throughout South Florida, including the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas, experienced flooding on Wednesday due to heavy rainfall, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency and leaving drivers stranded across the region.
The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for parts of Broward, Miami-Dade, Collier, and Hendry counties until Thursday morning, cautioning of ongoing "life-threatening flooding." Flood watches have also been extended for Miami and Fort Lauderdale until Friday evening.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in Nebraska:

"Numerous areas are submerged with stalled vehicles, and additional rainfall is anticipated," the weather service warned on Wednesday night. "If feasible, avoid traveling on the roads."
Social media footage depicted water levels rising to the windows of vehicles and inundating parking decks and neighborhood streets.
In Miami, videos showed cars stranded with most of their bodies submerged under water, marking the second consecutive day the city has grappled with flooding issues. Tuesday's storms dumped 2 to 5 inches of rain, flooding streets.
In Hallandale Beach, where footage captured a man kayaking among cars in flooded areas, officials advised residents to shelter in place and avoid traveling through the water.
Officials in Hallandale Beach reported a family briefly lost their son during the storm, but local police successfully reunited them.
A woman, delayed for five hours on Hallandale Beach Boulevard and US Route 1 due to flooding, described intersections without power, stalled cars, and abandoned vehicles. Hollywood resident Kait Madrigal recounted to CNN, "I’ve never seen it like that."
In addition to heavy rainfall, a storm system on Wednesday spawned an EF1 tornado in Hobe Sound, Martin County, about 35 miles north of West Palm Beach, confirmed by a National Weather Service damage survey.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties, citing severe rain and flooding that has impacted critical infrastructure, including major interstates, roads, schools, and airports.
While Florida is accustomed to heavy rain, these events are becoming more intense due to global warming caused by fossil fuel emissions. The frequent daily downpours are further intensified by a continuous flow of tropical moisture from the Caribbean, directed straight into South Florida along a frontal boundary draped across the state.
Over the remainder of the work week, several additional inches of rain are forecast from a broad, disorganized area of storms stalled over the region. By late week, the National Hurricane Center indicates a slight possibility that these storms could organize into the first tropical depression of the hurricane season as they move off the Southeast coast.
Rainfall totals in excess of ten inches are expected in parts of Florida by Friday, with some areas in southwest Florida potentially nearing 20 inches. The southwest Gulf Coast, spanning from Sarasota to Everglades National Park, faces the highest risk of receiving 10 inches or more of rainfall.

Localized heavy rain outside of these areas could trigger flash flooding, particularly in urban or poorly drained areas. Flood watches are currently active for over 8 million people in South Florida from Wednesday through Thursday night at the earliest.
Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico continues to pour over South Florida, prompting the Weather Prediction Center to issue a level 2 out of 4 flood threat for Wednesday night, Thursday, and Friday. An additional 3 to 6 inches of rainfall is anticipated across Southeastern Florida, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, through Friday. Some parts of South Florida may accumulate over a foot of rain, which exceeds typical monthly to several months' worth of precipitation.
Throughout the week, the flood risk will escalate as successive storms pour heavy rain over the same area day after day. This persistent rainfall will cause cumulative precipitation totals to rise, saturating soils and swelling local waterways.
One potential silver lining is that this rain will provide much-needed relief to areas currently grappling with drought. According to the US Drought Monitor, half of Florida is currently experiencing abnormal dryness or drought conditions, with the most severe drought centered precisely where the heaviest rain is expected to fall.
The moisture driving this week's storms originates from a robust gyre that typically gathers over the Caribbean Sea and southern Gulf of Mexico during this season. Known as the Central American gyre, this large, disorganized system of showers and thunderstorms rotates over Central America and adjacent waters.
Weather Forecast For New New Hampshire:
The gyre's expansive circulation and abundant moisture can facilitate the development of tropical systems in various regions, including the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and even the far eastern Pacific. However, current upper-level wind conditions, known as wind shear, are too disruptive for tropical systems to form in these areas at present, as noted by Jon Rizzo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida.
Despite the warm waters in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, favorable conditions for tropical system formation hinge on the alignment of various factors, including wind patterns and sea surface temperatures.
The gyre is enhancing the wet weather along the Gulf Coast, which Florida will experience throughout this week.
"The formation of the Central American gyre signifies that summer has arrived and the rainy season is starting," said Jon Rizzo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida, speaking to CNN.

June, July, August, and September typically mark the peak of rainfall for most of Florida. During this period, frequent influxes of deep, tropical moisture and the direct influence of tropical systems cause rainfall amounts to soar.

Storm proof Vs Hurricane Proof Windows and Doors in 2024
When it comes to fortifying homes against the relentless forces of nature, the choice between storm proof and hurricane proof windows and doors becomes a crucial decision for residents in Florida’s coastal communities. To protect your haven, making informed decisions about your windows and doors is paramount. The subtropical climate in areas like Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, and beyond brings not only the allure of sunshine but also the potential threat of severe weather conditions.
Storm proof Vs Hurricane Proof Windows and Doors
Storm-proof and hurricane-proof windows are designed to protect against extreme weather conditions, but there are differences in their intended use and the level of protection they offer. Let’s explore these differences:
Tumblr media
Storm-Proof Windows and Doors:
Storm-proof windows and doors are designed to withstand a variety of severe weather conditions, not just hurricanes. In Florida, where tropical storms and heavy rainfall are common, having storm proof window and door becomes essential. These windows are crafted to resist strong winds, heavy rain, and flying debris. While they provide a level of protection, they may not meet the specific requirements for hurricane-prone regions.
Hurricane-Proof Windows and Doors:
Hurricane-proof windows and doors, also known as impact-resistant windows and doors or hurricane-impact windows and doors are engineered with a singular focus on withstanding the intense forces associated with hurricanes. South Florida, particularly Palm Beach and Martin County, is prone to hurricanes, making these specialized windows crucial for the safety and structural integrity of homes. They typically feature impact-resistant glass, often laminated with a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) that prevents shattering upon impact, even from airborne debris during a hurricane.
While hurricane-proof windows and doors are specifically engineered to meet the stringent requirements of regions prone to hurricanes, storm proof windows and doors are designed to offer protection against a broader range of severe weather conditions. The choice between the two may depend on the local climate, building codes, and the level of protection needed. It’s essential to consult with local authorities and follow building codes when selecting and installing windows for properties in areas susceptible to extreme weather events.
Local Building Codes:
Residents in areas like Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, and beyond must adhere to local building codes and regulations that often dictate the type of windows and doors permissible in construction. In many cases, especially in hurricane-prone zones, there may be strict requirements for the installation of hurricane-proof windows to ensure the safety of the property and its occupants.
Types of windows and doors for hurricane and storm protection
Single-Hung Windows: These are simple to operate and offer good protection against flying debris. They have a fixed upper sash and a movable lower sash.
Double-Hung Windows: Popular for safety and ventilation, double-hung windows offer versatility with movable upper and lower sashes.
Casement Windows: These windows open outward like a door, creating an airtight seal when closed. They are known for their energy efficiency and security.
Sliding Windows: Providing unhindered views of the outside and being simple to operate, sliding windows are perfect for modern homes.
Fixed Windows: These non-operable windows are perfect for areas where ventilation is not a primary concern. They provide maximum protection.
Impact-Resistant Glass Windows: Polyvinyl butyral (PVB)-coated laminated glass that satisfies or above hurricane requirements, offers durability in inclement weather.
Double-glazed windows: Offers an additional layer of insulation and protection. Enhances energy efficiency while providing storm resistance.
High Wind-Resistant Windows: Specifically designed to withstand high wind loads prevalent in coastal areas. Tested for resistance against strong gusts associated with hurricanes.
Impact-Resistant Entry Doors: Solid and reinforced doors designed to resist impact from debris. Adds an extra layer of protection for the home’s entry points.
Fiberglass Doors: Resistant to warping, cracking, and damage from high winds and water exposure. Durable and energy efficient for storm-prone areas.
Steel Doors: Offers strength and durability against hurricane-force winds. Resistant to dents, providing long-term protection.
French Doors: Made up of two hinged doors that swing open, French doors are a beautiful and highly protective addition to any home.
Patio Doors: Patio doors can be either hinged or sliding and are designed to provide easy access to your outdoor living areas.
Remember, investing in proper window protection is an investment in your safety and the security of your home. Choose wisely and stay safe! for free consultation call Window Replacement Group today at 561–220–6154 in Jupiter, FL.

Preventing HVAC Problems Before Hurricane Season With HVAC Maintenance in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, FL
South Florida residents are no strangers to the annual threat of hurricane season. As these powerful storms approach, preparation is essential to safeguard homes and businesses. While securing windows and stocking up on supplies is common practice, one aspect often overlooked is preparing HVAC systems. A well-maintained HVAC system can make a world of difference in the aftermath of a hurricane. Following is a list of the tasks related to HVAC maintenance in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, FL to ensure that HVAC systems remain functional during and after severe weather events in South Florida.
1. Clean and Secure Outdoor Units:
The outdoor condenser unit of the HVAC system is vulnerable during a hurricane. Debris and strong winds can damage the unit, affecting its functionality. Before the hurricane season, ensure the area around the outdoor unit is clear of loose items, branches, and debris. Additionally, consider securing the unit with hurricane straps or brackets.
2. Elevate Outdoor Units:
In flood-prone areas, it's a good idea to elevate the outdoor HVAC unit to prevent water damage. Elevating the unit on a platform or stand can protect it from storm surges and flooding, ensuring it remains operational.
3. Trim Surrounding Trees and Branches:
Overhanging trees can pose a risk to the HVAC system during a hurricane. High winds can cause branches to break and fall on the unit, potentially causing significant damage. Pruning trees and removing dead branches beforehand can reduce this risk.
4. Check for Leaks in Ductwork:
Inspect the HVAC ductwork for any leaks or damage. Duct cleaning services in Pembroke Pines and Palm Beach, FL and properly sealing ductwork can help prevent water from infiltrating the system during heavy rain, which can lead to costly repairs after a hurricane. Hence, it is essential to choose duct cleaning services in Pembroke Pines and Palm Beach, FL.
5. Secure Roof-Mounted Units:
If the HVAC system is located on the roof, it's crucial to have it inspected and secured correctly. Ensure that the unit is fastened securely to prevent it from becoming a projectile during strong winds.
6. Service the HVAC System:
Routine HVAC maintenance is essential to ensure the system operates at its best during a hurricane. A professional HVAC technician can inspect the unit, clean coils, change filters, and ensure all components are in good working order. This maintenance can help identify and address potential issues before a hurricane strikes.
7. Backup Power:
Investing in a backup power source, such as a generator, can keep the HVAC system running during power outages caused by hurricanes. This is especially important in South Florida, where intense heat and humidity can pose health risks.
8. Shut Off the System When Appropriate:
In some cases, it may be necessary to shut off the HVAC system during a hurricane to prevent damage caused by flying debris or electrical surges. Be prepared to do so if advised by local authorities.
9. Plan for Post-Hurricane Inspection:
After the hurricane has passed and it is safe to do so, schedule a post-storm inspection of the HVAC system. Look for damage, especially to the outdoor unit, and have any issues addressed promptly to prevent further complications.
10. Have a Reliable HVAC Service on Standby:
It's crucial to have a trusted HVAC service provider on standby. In the aftermath of a hurricane, HVAC systems may require emergency repairs. Having a service provider ready to respond can help ensure quick and efficient restoration of the system.
South Florida's hurricane season can be a challenging time for residents. Taking proactive steps to protect the HVAC system can alleviate some of the stress during and after a storm. By implementing these maintenance tasks and precautions, one can ensure that the HVAC system remains functional and reliable, providing comfort and safety for oneself and the entire family, even in the wake of a hurricane.

Air conditioning systems are essential for maintaining comfortable indoor environments, especially in hot and humid climates. However, AC failure can have unintended consequences beyond just discomfort. One of the significant risks associated with AC breakdown is the potential for mold growth. In this article, we will explore how AC failure can lead to mold growth, the dangers it poses, and ways to prevent this common issue.
Understanding the Link: Air conditioning systems not only regulate temperature but also play a crucial role in managing indoor humidity levels. AC units help remove excess moisture from the air, preventing the growth of mold and mildew. When an AC system malfunctions or fails, it disrupts this vital process, creating an environment conducive to mold growth.
Moisture Build-Up: AC systems work by cooling the air, causing moisture to condense on the evaporator coils. This excess moisture is typically drained away from the system. However, in the event of an AC failure, the drainage mechanism may not function correctly, causing moisture to accumulate in the system and eventually find its way into the indoor environment. Excess humidity provides the perfect breeding ground for mold spores to thrive.
Lack of Air Circulation: Proper ventilation is essential for preventing mold growth. When an AC unit fails, it not only stops removing humidity but also decreases air circulation. Stagnant air allows moisture to settle on surfaces, creating an ideal environment for mold to colonize. Mold can develop on walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture, and other porous materials.
The Health and Property Risks: Mold growth is not just unsightly; it poses serious health risks. Mold releases spores into the air, which can be inhaled, leading to respiratory issues, allergies, and even exacerbating existing conditions. Additionally, mold can cause structural damage to buildings and belongings, resulting in costly repairs.
Prevention and Mitigation: To prevent mold growth due to AC failure, consider the following measures:
Regular Maintenance: Schedule regular maintenance for your AC system to identify and address potential issues before they lead to failure.
Humidity Monitoring: Use a hygrometer to monitor indoor humidity levels. Keeping humidity levels below 50% can help deter mold growth.
Timely Repairs: If you notice any issues with your AC system, such as water leakage or reduced cooling, address them promptly to prevent further damage.
Proper Insulation: Ensure your home is properly insulated to minimize temperature fluctuations and reduce the risk of moisture build-up.
Adequate Ventilation: Use fans and open windows when weather permits to promote air circulation and reduce humidity.
Conclusion: AC failure can have far-reaching consequences beyond just discomfort. The link between AC failure and mold growth highlights the importance of proper maintenance, regular inspections, and prompt repairs. By understanding the risks and taking preventive measures, homeowners can ensure their indoor environments remain healthy, comfortable, and free from the damaging effects of mold.
