Thebe Estate, Tartosa

I'm a huge Felixandre fan, if you haven't seen his phenomenal work, you are missing out. I think most everyone who builds in Sims 4 knows his fantastic works and his architectural is by far top tier. With the release of his Estate set, I thought the Thebe Estate in Tartosa could use a little makeover.

My inspo was to keep the overall layout of the build. I love that it already has the feel of an established estate, I just wanted to give it a bit more, "Old Money' vibe. I set out to not only find items that kept a modern furnishing, but my IRL love of thrifting and antiquing had me wanting to find pieces that felt like they might be heirloom, or restored finds.

Redecorating is probably one of my favorite parts of the gameplay and has been since I first discovered the Sims 1 in the early 2000s. I hope you guys love it.

Which one are you finding the hardest to finish?

welcome to the madhouse - the tribute time loop fic is my favorite fic but also that treech chapter is killing me ;-;

i'm not too happy with the way he's characterized (esp what i currently have for his dynamic with lamina) but at this point it's hard to tell if it just feels stilted bc i've read it over too many times or if it's bc it needs to be scrapped and redone- at this point, i might just leave it as is and post it :/

What does it usually look like when inspiration strikes for you?

immediately typing it out on the notes app on my phone and/or doc if my computer is in reach- i know that i will 100% forget it if i don't have it written down so putting the words "on paper" so to speak is so important for me!!

Do you curate playlists for each fic or is your process different?

i don't have any fic-specific playlists, but there are certain songs that i tend to listen to when getting into a writing mood! (it's a lot of ajr, the oh hellos, and the crane wives + misc indie songs)

often times, bc the songs i listen to usually fit the fic, i'll end up taking lyrics from the fic to use as a title [fic titles my beloathed >:(]

Do you go balls to the wall and write or are you more organized?

definitely the former! i've tried organizing with outlines, but my brain decides 'yup, that au is finished' when i have outlines and refuses to continue making it into fic format. best example of this is one of my hp fics (making do), which had been sitting in my docs as bullet points for a while before i made it into a fic, and i feel like it's still pretty evident that it was literally just adding periods to the end of each bullet point i had for that concept.

so yeah! i tend to go directly from concept to fic snippets - if i have an idea, i'll usually write out scenes, then editing is just reorganizing each scene to where it fits best chronologically :)

Hello! I was doing another re-read of Paper Cranes~ and I had a question, was there a reason you didn’t post chapter 24 on AO3? No rush or anything! I don’t wanna push or nag you about it~ (and once I catch up to Dragon Prince I’m going to read more of your stuff~)

In the case of paper cranes, as well as some of my other older works, I used to keep Tumblr a chapter ahead of ao3 to encourage people to go to my Tumblr. Partially for the attention, partially because my Tumblr has other neat stuff like the paper cranes masterpage, various meta, and fanart. I've stopped doing that with more recent fanfictions, but it's possible I'll still do it for paper cranes whenever I return to working on that. For nostalgia if nothing else.

If you enjoy my writing, catching up to Dragon Prince is a sensible move! I'm likely to be writing in this fandom quite prolifically for a fair while.

I loved your Paper Crane fanfic for Hikaru no go. Lemme ask you a question if you dont mind at all? Did you already finished the chapter 25 and 26? And what's their current status? I hoped you will not offended to my question.

All that exists of chapter 25 is about 2k I wrote last year sometime. Chapter 26 doesn't even have a document; it's completely unstarted.

Please no one hold your breath waiting for a a Paper Cranes update. As I have said several times before, it is very decidedly on hiatus.

I saw that Paper Cranes is on hiatus and hasn't been updated since 2018. Just wondering if you're still writing? It's one of my favorites :)

Paper Cranes is indeed on hiatus. This means it isn't an active project and isn't being worked on. I think the last time I worked on it was last year sometime in the midst of a very brief but unpleasant depressive episode.

Piaj being my active project is kind of a bad thing for Paper Cranes, unfortunately. This is because my current predictions on Piaj estimate that it's likely going to take 1.5mil words to finish the thing (quite possibly a lot more), and even if I write very quickly, that's still going to take me years. And then there's the sequel...

In general, if paper cranes is worked on, it'll be in transient bursts when the mood strikes me. I'm not going to abandon it, it's too important to me for that, but compared to the scope and ambition of piaj it's just....so much smaller, now. It feels weird that people used to praise me for worldbuilding in paper cranes, when it's so comparatively tiny. A lot of things feel weird.

Still, whenever paper cranes does update again, it'll have the strength of all the growing I've done as an author. So I guess there's that to look forward to?

How much of the plot did you plan out before you started writing PIAJ or Paper Cranes? For long running fanfictions like Paper Cranes, do you already have an ending in mind?

Interesting question! Thanks for the opportunity to babble about writing!

On endings:

Paper Cranes (Hikaru no Go), as I mention sometimes, massively outgrew my expectations since I went into it thinking it would be like 4 chapters long and maybe 50k at most, and now we're over 200k and like 23 chapters in, so. Please, laugh at past-me. I certainly do. So at any rate, the plot device that leads to the ending and the ending itself have been known to me since the beginning, though the circumstances and context have shifted a lot over time. I've got one of the most climactic scenes of probably the penultimate chapter already written, and have done since....probably winter 2017? Yikes.

Piaj (the Dragon Prince) is a different beast entirely. Since its events are fundamentally based on an ongoing canon, rather than a post-series thing like paper cranes is, I can't make an ending unless I decide to divorce myself from canon entirely, which I'd rather not do. I'm writing an extremely canon divergent AU maybe, and worldbuilding heavily, but I like to stay true to important canonical world and background details unless there's a very good reason for diverging.

On planning:

Paper Cranes was very much a by the seat of my pants thing at first. I had the basic idea and the ending, but it wasn't until chapter 8 that story arcs started spawning and the events gave me insight into how future things are going to go down. Planning for paper cranes at present is fairly loose, and includes a timeline spanning the planned chronology of the story, with certain days and/or months marked out for significant events. Day-to-day timeline is clarified as I reach that point in the story. I've been foreshadowing a bit in recent chapters, since I started getting my shit together re: planning out story arcs properly, but I could have foreshadowed certain things a lot longer ago if I'd had a better idea of where the story was going back then. That's life, I suppose.

Piaj was planned from the start to be a long and elaborate epic. Which, of course, means it's going to probably end up breaking 1mil someday, if it doesn't kill me first. Piaj is meticulously planned, but in a way that allows for more nebulous plot threads to grow and develop. For instance, I have significant events planned more or less down to the day for 60 days of the timeline, and those 60 days are split into 16 distinct sections, but it was only recently that a piece of worldbuilding I did started to clarify what direction I'm going to take Runaan's subplot in. I really had no idea what I was going to do with him before that. And a surprise worldbuilding bomb dropped on me by Opeli ended up tying in Amaya's subplot into some significant events later in the story, and considerably expanding Amaya's subplot in general (ha). I encourage that sort of thing in my writing because it always seems to lead somewhere that feels right for the narrative.

So I leave a lot of things up in the air, so that there's room to let plot threads develop organically and for characters to do things I don't expect. It seems to be working out, so far! When I first started writing piaj I had some main events in mind that I wanted to happen, and my Favourite Thing was actually one of the first scenes I wrote. The planning and complexity of the story has developed from there - and because I know so much about the bigger events I'm leading up to, I can foreshadow very very far in advance, which is pretty fun. Piaj is so different from paper cranes in so many ways, especially in terms of planning and story structure, so it really has been interesting to work with.

News on my writing

I've had some asks lately and I think it's time for the irregularly scheduled reminder:

Paper Cranes, barring unprecedented disaster, will not be abandoned.

That said, it has become sort of a victim of its own success. I've allowed myself to become sufficiently hung up on it that writing it is very, very difficult. Every chapter must be exactly right, and immaculately researched, and preread and adjusted a good five times before I can release it into the canon. I fret over it immensely. Writing Paper Cranes is intense and fraught enough to be actually pretty stressful now.

I just plain don't have the energy to wrestle with that most of the time. And I also don't want to try to 'take it easy' and let the story become less than what it could be. So paper cranes progression is probably going to remain slow and halting unless I end up in a powerful hikago mood sometime this year. If I don’t manage to get myself to write another chapter in time for May 5th, which is very likely, I’ll release one of my other hikago WIPs instead, or update Cat’s Cradle.

My current project, Peace Is A Journey, is something of an experiment for me. It's my 'growing as an author' project. It's my 'how long can I keep this up' project. For the first time in my life I've been writing at least 1k a day very consistently for over a month, barring maybe three days. This is completely new ground to me and I want to see how far I can take it. Since around 24th of Feb I have written around 80k of this story, and that is well beyond anything I have managed in that sort of time-frame before. I want to see how far I can go.

I'm also trying to be careful to avoid getting too hung up on research perfection in this story, and just write and enjoy it. I'm trying to learn to keep on writing even when motivation is low and I'm discouraged by low response. Piaj also provides other learning opportunities for me in that it's the first time I've started a story with knowledge of late-story critical events that I can hint and foreshadow incredibly far in advance. I'm even employing symbolism and various literary devices in some scenes, which is fun to work with. There’s other stuff I’m working on in piaj, but I’ll leave it there for now. It's enjoyable, and valuable experience for me. I'm enjoying the exercise to my writing ability this story is providing, and I want to keep at it.

The wisteria incense I ordered arrived today, and while I've not burnt any yet, I'm very impressed by both the packaging and the scent it gives off in its non-smoldering state. It's much nicer than the concentrated wisteria oil I bought way back when. Also it's purple.

I have high hopes for my enjoyment of it and will likely reblog with my commentary once I've burnt some.

Discord for paper cranes

So @noip13 and @bellachrome made a discord a while ago for the purposes of talking about paper cranes, and eventually I joined it, but it all got so wildly off topic and proliferated with spoilers that if anyone else wanted to be in such a discord we'd need a new one.

Could I get an idea of how much interest there would be in you guys for being in a paper cranes discord? I imagine on the whole we'd be talking about hikago things, paper cranes things, and then occasionally I'd come by to lament about writers block or tease the hell out of you with ominous vague statements about future instalments. We'd probably also have a general channel, a channel for talking about other fanfic, and then possibly others as the need arises.

I know at least one person is interested. If anyone else is, please let me know so I can get an idea of the scope of things.
