Apart from being an appreciated, though however brief touchup on the concept of altruism as a type of behavior not purely exclusive to humanity (an analysis for another day) I truly think that Youpi may be an initial spin on the “powerful nen user with impeccable intellect” trend.

Within the world of hxh, every nen user worth their salt has been incredibly intelligent and demonstrative of the fact that they have at least more than a couple brain cells to rub together; from Kurapika to the adult Zoldycks to the Phantom Troupe and Genthru, the list goes on. Pitou and Pouf and Meruem as well, follow along this line, with the sole exception to their family being Youpi.

And sure; every skillful nen user has been shown to possess their own varying levels of wit, but Youpi is perhaps the first in a long line of users who’s been demonstrably shown to be straight up dumb. Like, can’t-tell-the-difference-between-Pouf-and-Pitou’s-en-type dumb. His opponents (Knuckle and Morel) even call him out on this to his face.

I once again point out the apparent with this neatly falling in line with his personality being a direct contrast to Pouf and Pitou’s for the first half of the arc (y’know, before he goes batshit berserk with rage). Both are scheming and calculative whereas Youpi sits around all day and must ask questions in order to get answers. He receives information painfully at face value and his thought process is consistently linear and straightforward in a world where being quick witted can mean a difference between life and death. He is only able to survive as long as he does, in part due to the fact that the title of “royal guard” actually meant a little bit of something in his particular situation, and that sometimes strategy is moot in the face of raw power. In spite of this, his circumstances end up forcing him to seek new tactics and adapting when push comes to shove.

If I'm able to say that Togashi’s divergence from the overpowering, scheming mastermind in this instance is played particularly well or interesting? Hard to say, especially when we weren't given enough time with the royal guard (I say this as I am biased), but I find his evolution and progress as someone who could hardly be trusted to tell his right from his left or tie his own shoes (if he ever wore them) to a character fully capable of deducing Meleoron’s ability and keeping his calm whilst doling out instructions to Pouf in a dire situation as something really charming.

i just saw a tiktok of the i carly episode where carly is running away from the nerdy guy bc he kept trying to kiss her and now i’m thinking bucky.

like you’re steve’s sister and you’ve always been seen as the stereotypical “annoying younger sister” while you have the stereotypical “crush on your brothers best friend.” no biggie.

he would come over all the time, hang out, watch movies, spend the night, whatever. sometimes he even came over just because he’s board and waiting on steve to get back from one of his courses or something.

he was nice to you though, as much as he liked to agree with steve that you were a nuisance. the soft smiles he gave you proved otherwise.

sometimes he would even invite you to watch movies with them, going as far as to wrapping his arm around you if you got scared during a particularly gruesome halloween movie marathon.

but there’s one day in particular where your government professor demanded your project be worked on in pairs and this guy was very persistent in being your partner. as soon as it was announced to be partner work, he was turning to you and writing down his number. you didn’t really get a chance to say no to the guy.

you think his name was john? Lord knows.

so there you were, upstairs in your room, trying to get a game plan for this treacherous project. well, the project itself wouldn’t be treacherous, but working with john would be.

“okay, so they want us to map out the different circuits in the-“

“yea, yea whatever,” he cut you off as you began writing in your notebook, taking your pencil and the paper to set it aside. “we both know that’s not why i’m here.”

you waited a breath, “actually, that is why you’re here. that’s the only reason i even talked to you,” you shrugged with your brows pulled together in confusion.

as much as you try to be a nice person, this guy had practically forced you to partner with him and you’d be damned if he’s going to assume your own intentions.

“sure it is,” he inched closer to you, his hand trailing up to your cheek before you got up from your chair and pushed him away by nudging his chest.

“woah there, buddy boy,” you scoffed as you backed away from him. “i dunno what signals you misread here, but i’m not into-“

“i’m not misreading anything,” he shook his head as he stepped closer to you. “i get it though; you wanna play hard to get. it’s cute, really.”

“i see,” he forced out a laugh. “this is a joke. not a very good one, but points for trying,” you gave him two thumbs up before pushing his chest once more with your fist. “now back away.”

he leaned in once more before you dodged out of his way, pushing him down and beelining for the door, screaming steve’s name in your wake.

“steve! stevie! he’s trying to kiss me!” you continued as you finally made your way to the living room where he and bucky typically resided.

upon entrance, there was no steve to be seen, but you heard johns footsteps following not too far behind. bucky, however, was there. he was already on his feet, making his way towards you in your panting state.

“what’s goin’ on?” one of his hands went for your shoulder, the other going towards your waist. “breathe for me, doll.”

“he’s trying to shove his lips on my face and i don’t want that,” you dramatically paraphrased.

his face went stoic at your admission before he turned towards the incoming footsteps. john froze as his sight landed on bucky. you swore you heard an audible gulp as bucky approached him. you were sure from john’s perspective he had augmented himself to appear more threatening. not that bucky needed it, he had plenty of muscle that when paired with the right look, he could be easily intimidating.

“i didn’t-“ john cut himself off as bucky stood right before him. “i swear, i-“

“are you trying to say you didn’t try to kiss her?” he cut john off. “are you calling her a liar?” he barely towered over the pathetic man, but with the way john was cowering bucky had seemed five feet taller than him. “my princess isn’t a liar.”

“no! no, i-“ he threw his hands up in defense.

“i mean, i get she’s gorgeous, but that doesn’t mean you get to do whatever you want with her,” bucky shoved his shoulder gently. “didn’t your ma’ ever teach you how to properly court a lady?”

“she-i’m sorry, man,” john panted out. “look, i didn’t know she was taken, like at all. i didn’t mean any-“

“i don’t care what you meant,” he swiftly grabbed his arm and turned john around, pinning it behind his back as he hissed out in pain. “i don’t ever want to see you so much as breathe near her again, got it?”

“yea-yes!” he nodded exaggeratedly. “i swear, man! i won’t be a problem!”

“good,” he used this time to usher him out the door, slamming it as soon as he turned back around.

“thank you, jamie,” you sighed as you plopped down on the coach where he had once resided. “i don’t even know why he thought he would be able to pull that off,” you scoffed as you shook your head, grabbing the remote and changing the channel.

“hey, i was watching a documentary!” he interrupted your thought process as he snatched the remote from your hands.

you chuckled lightly as you replayed the entire scene in your head. you kicked your feet up on the ottoman, trying to bite back a smile as you said, “so… you think i’m gorgeous, huh?”

he sighed as he plopped down beside you, his arm thrown on the back of the couch, “if you ever tell steve he’s gonna chop my head off.”

you and bucky inched away from one another, which was odd. you weren’t doing anything, but it felt like you had crossed a line.

“debate went on so much longer this time, an argument broke out and then we had to recollect before final rebuttals and everything,” he rambled out as he plopped down in his favorite recliner. “so, how’re you guys doing?”

“fine,” bucky cut you off. “we’re fine. nothing eventful. nothing happened. nothing at all, really.”

he turned to you with a slight smirk before turning back to steve.

As far as I know, Velvette has no canon age at death, cause of death, or death date so based on what we know we just crafted our own headcanons. AJ proposed she might've had parents who ran one of those family vlog channels with her as the face of it, becoming a child influencer under her parents' control. I was thinking she could've been a child model- yk like. dance moms or something. Idk I don't remember what was happening on that show— anyways. Yea

Either way she grew up constantly controled and perfection was her standard. All of her outside thoughts and feelings and interests and opinions were constantly dismissed in favor of what made her more marketable. She never did get that popular in life tho, and her mentors always shamed and blamed her for it.

Idk if this is canon or not, but the idea of the sinners designs reflecting their vices or things they regreted or hated in life is an untapped gold mine to me so that could explain where Velvette's supposed doll and clown themes come from. Became a toy dressed up and paraded around for the entertainment of others + joke never taken seriously. She'd hate that

In hell she easilly fell back into this warped facsimile of her old life bc it was all she knew. "she feels some form of pseudo control and enjoyment because she has no one pulling her strings now" (<-AJ) SHE'S running things!!! Who's the puppet now!!!!!!

Then THAT had me thinking too because now that I think about it. Why Is she the backbone of the V's?? She's like. An undergrad student in my mind at the MOST and Vox and Val are two men pushing 40 I'm sure. I think a big part of it is the fact that those two are almost complete and utter buffoons who let their emotions cloud their actions constantly, Valentino most obviously but even tho Vox seems more composed like when he's talking Val down from his outburst and when he was talking to the press, we can still see he's a total mess—especially where Alastor is concerned. He lost it so bad during their duet HE SHORTED PENTAGRAM CITY'S POWER.

Now out of all the V's we've seen the least of Velvette (I'd call it what it is but yall gon get real mad at me), The most we really got out of her character was the overlord meeting (and despite her huge ego and unruly behavior she did end up speaking facts), so maybe she Is just as unstable as them in canon but canon is SHIT and this isn't about canon anymore. In my mind she's very much in charge of the back end of their work. Vox is obviously the head of the operation—or at least he seems like it to me—what with the tech company having his name and with him answering the interviews, but I think that's all he is. The figure head. Velvette is the brain behind it all. When Vox proposes new buisness endeavors off the cuff she's the one who goes back and makes sure they're getting handled properly because he doesn't really dig into the backend of how things happen. Vox goes to most of the conferences or whatever (Vel's too busy running her shows and serving cunt after all) but Vel follows up on what was learned.

(also yeah all that makes this very much an au of an au bc it'd take a lot of radical changes for the two of them to be friends I think. It's fun to imagine anyway)

THIS this. THIS! Okay uhh vague personal experience w/ abuse cw ig. skip this paragraph if you don't wanna hear it. But It kinda reminds me of my relationship with my parents- NOT THAT I SEE THEM AS TWO DADS AND A DAUGHTER I DO NOT BELIEVE IN THAT NOTION IN A POST PILOT WORLD If future content proves me wrong it proves me wrong but at this moment they're all equals in my mind (…and I hc them as poly BUT WE'LL GET THERE) but In my situation it's like. I hate my parents for the abuse they've caused me, my mom more than my dad bc she's satan incarnate, but there are still things I like about my dad and. Tolerate. About my mother. We still can talk cordialy and spend time together, have fun together even, and I show affection to them, but deep down I know I wanna cut my mom off later and maybe my dad too depending. Additionally my mom is completely Incompatent and pulls none of her weight so despite it all I've been forced to pick up the slack and become half the brains of this family. I do chores she should take care of. Handle money. Make important decisions about our health and safety she doesn't care about.

AAAny ways. This is so my version of Velvette. No I'm not projecting (I am). She pulls a big chunk of the weight around there (some of it being carried by Vox and virtually none by Val). She's very close with the two of them but isn't a fan of everything they do (Cares more for Vox than Val in my mind). Speaking of, she definitely isn't some saint now, she still makes the love potions and is Impassive to both Val and Vox's behavior, but part of that Is her just seeing it as part of the business. Shady practices and exploitation are par for the course in any business to her. She never truly grew out of the harmful mindsets ingrained into her by whoever her enabling caretakers were in life and they're still apparent in hell. (Maybe she even experienced some of the darker sides of exploitation in life but was groomed into thinking it was okay contributing to why she doesn't see Valentino's actions as heinous. Idk. thinking on it)

Circling back to my poly V's idea. Idk it just seems plausible to me. Vox and Val already have their whole thing going on, they all live together, and they all have nicknames for each other (Vox calling her my dear, Val calling her baby doll, Vel calling Vox darling). Ik that could just be their personalities and the pet names don't have to mean anything more but this is MY au and my word is gospel hope this helps. It just makes sense

I could go on and ON about the toxic insanity of the Poly V's in my mind— particularly between Vox and Valentino— but this is NOT their post so maybe next time. As for Velvette, I get the vibe that she'd be intimate with both of them and enjoy it but she's never the one to initiate anything. Sometimes they're all like this 🤞🏾 and others the boys are a complete turn off to her (main example being the difference in her attitude towards Vox in episode 3 vs episode 8). Her tolerance of them flips on a dime depending on how they're acting. She also prefers to be a casually entertained observer to VoxVal more often then not (ex. end of episode 8 imo)

Boys aside. My Velvette is still a social media influencer and she's all about advertising. advertising products (like the love potion), clothing looks, technology... Heck even herself. "You're nobody if you don't wear this or use this or look like this ^ - ^". Projecting on her even further by making her have a love/hate relationship with her profession aka the modeling aspect of it: she's always had a genuine love for fashion and dressing up but the internal pressure for perfection she's placed on herself makes it hard for her. She's very hard on her models and designers bc of this

Couldn't think of a segway for this but also WHAT HAPPENED TO VELVETTE WANTING TO FIGHT THE ANGELS??? The "full assault plan" against the angels??? And then when the fight actually came they were all just lounging around watching it go down like it was afternoon tv????? This isn't even a "we'll get to it in season 2" thing did they honest to god forget? Did that line not mean anything??

Well I didn't forget and it's pissed me off since my first rewatch of that meeting scene. Don't think we don't know how the V's got the angel head, but In my head Velvette was the one who initially proposed the idea for an assault against heaven and her insatiable need to feel respected and feared only spurred this plan on, incredible risk be damned.

It also felt weird to me that Velvette just. Let it go when Carmilla said the meeting was over. Just. "Oh ok! Plan cancelled no more attacking heaven ^ - ^ I'm gonna go scroll for the rest of the show!" Hu h. My au-ified Velvette would definitely fight her on it— if she thought killing angels would change the game and Carmilla held the secrets behind it she would pry! Blow up at her about it until she wasn't getting results and bitterly storming off with as much composure as she could muster. Not wanting to team up with Carmilla but find some way to use her for all she was worth and get her way in the end, use the power and resources the V's had to actually make a plan. Would it have worked without the Morningstars? Eh. Either way I'm sure she could delude herself into thinking they were the most powerful people in hell. so anyways who wants to hear about my mildly incoherent rushed analysis [that's also probably definitely late to the party] of how the shooter arc presented deliberate parallels between buck/eddie and bobby/athena, cuz ive been on a rewatch binge for the past few days [unintentional prep for s8 later this month] and seeing the episodes again got my brain working

kinda working backwards tho i got no clue how to structure this so just trust me

well there's the obvious of how bobby and eddie both got shot by the sniper, and buck and athena respectively ended up being the ones to help them, plus also a kinda juxtaposition with athena and buck as athena was prepped in proper gear with her gun to enter the building and save bobby from the sniper but buck was in his casual clothes and incredibly vulnerable when he pulled eddie back into the truck

the one thing that actually had me snap my head back lowkey tho was when athena gets to bobby and about how she'd walk thru fire for him [vague paraphrase i literally watched the episodes like several hours ago]

which then made me think of how buck did the exact same when eddie got shot, the fire he walked through was literally the sniper rounds getting aimed at the firefighters

also do u ever think about how when buck or eddie get thrown into a situation, the other one is usually the first to respond [buck clawing at mud when the hole caved in on eddie, you will always be famous to me], that's not like the main point of this tho they just make me wanna gnaw thru wood at any point in time

yea so for s8 i want them to cut between a couple kissing and buck & eddie doing literally anything, make the parallel so obvious it makes me wanna eat my phone, alright script writer guys u got this

(cr2 rewatch update) got to the part in ep97 earlier in which tmn find out everything that essek did and how he betrayed them, worked with ludinus and ikithon etc, and it did not change how i felt about him. i feel so bad for beau and veth who are clearly the most hurt right in that moment at the idea of just letting things go. beau shakily saying that thousands are dead because of this :(( veth reminding everyone her husband was kidnapped because of this. and i very much understand where cad is coming from but he's removed from it all so.. beau and veth </3 .... but also rly like the moment of cad being vary wary about restarting a war trying to enact revenge (because yea, he's got a point) and then caleb saying to focus on doing anything that they can so no more children are ending up on the pyre, and cad saying "no more children on the pyre. i can get behind that" . (reminds me of when tmn first met him and were trying to convince him to help free everyone and he was like "well, i dont like cages" and decided right away). also my one hater moment was essek being like "im irredeemable :((((" and i was like true . only for him to continue that (paraphrasing) "if im found out ill be killed" .. hes not remorseful for the people he hurt (outside of tmn) hes just sad he got caught. he does basically say that too, that he doesnt regret what he did, just that he ruined his own friendship . girl i think there are bigger problems
